I find myself trying to practice and my mind starts wondering to past memories, past regrets and losing focus and completely losing concentration, more often than not. ...It's really counter-productive and renders anything I do on guitar useless. My dad was a professional guitarist and musician in the 80's and 90's working with big names (John leckie, Jimmy iovine etc), but his message to me is always to practice without effects. Because him growing up, he played on a terrible guitar with high action and just a little bass amp, and he got so good by practicing for like 6 hours a day with just an amp and guitar, that when he got his fender strat and a good amp and effects pedal etc he was so good because he was already great without the fancy stuff. His key things are kind of "digging in" with you fingers so you have the ability to play good dynamics, but a lot of parallels between what you're saying and what he says. Good vid!

Amazin Lesson! The title should be How to practice anything, not just guitar! My main learnings:
    - Motivation to practice and get better (should not feel like an obbligation)
    - Structure (make a clear and specific daily plan)
    - Limitations (limit your practice list to a confined space, e.g. 1 page)
    - Goal (target your practice excercises)
    - Scalable (make a fixed short practice routine that you can do every day and add 1/2 extra excercises from your "wishlist" whenever time allows)
    - Practice Space (make sure your guitars are ready to be used and right there next to you, everything ready, no time wasted in setting up your practice space)
    - Focus and Quality (don't spend 4 hours on backing tracks and max gain, spend less time and follow the plan)

Seriously. Most stress is imposed by outside influence. We allow it and take it - for some odd reason. Internal stress is often caused by trying to be someone we aren’t. Be you. Be influenced others sure. But they are them and you are you. In music that can be as simple a difference of everybody’s hands are differently shaped.
Fortune for me, I sit on the sidewalk and play. I don’t care if they don’t like. I hope it brings a smile to just one person.
If someone doesn’t like they don’t have to listen.
As children people get concerned that we don’t have enough friends. As adults we wish we had fewer and at least one was true.
Music, for the player/creator, is anti-stress. It’s a place we can go that none other can follow. They may come close but this becomes my space. My world for this moment. Peace to all. Breathe. Be well. and just be …….🌹

I was in a massive pleateau trying to play a Marty Friedman solo Lucretia, just couldn't get the timing right, it was stressful for months. I then switched to learn other genres of music, not just metal and practice improvisation, different chords and smooth transitions, learned more music theory because I just wanted to write more. Now music is just coming out of my hands, I'm kind of abusing the phyrigian dominant scale for evil sounds lol and the major seventh chords for nice shiny sounds. I'm playing acoustic, I used to hate acoustic LOL, now is like way more fun to play guitar with all this new knowledge.

There are so many amazing guitar players but you can play simple melody and you can add your emotion! That type of practice idea is so much fun to work on and a lot of rewarding from that. Once Mary Friedman asked me to sit in one of his show in Boston. That night got so much snow in my area so I could not make it! Next time! He is so humble guy! He kept saying that his funk rhythm guitar is horrible! Please enjoy your guitar playing!

This is very good advice. It is simple and very sound. There are so many distractions for today's youth. The positive of this-they are mentally quicker. But because of so many different interests, even their increased mental quickness can't overcome the need to really drill down and focus on 1 goal and build that strong foundation.
It is so unfair of the false expectations sold on social media.
It's easy for any person to promote themselves as amazing at anything when they can edit a video well. I can easily see how young adults confidence can go down quickly and their stress rise very fast.
I'm curious if you have seen a shift in your college students confidence and self worth change over the years?
Thank you for the video. Excellent discussion

Tomo love the video and thoughts. Question- I want to find motivation to play again, and am curious if you have advice? I used to regularly gig, perform, record and would practice every day because I wanted to. COVID broke all momentum I had in my playing career and all my leads for playing work have dried up within the past 6 months. I’m now completely without any work and have no idea where to look, and because of that, have completely lost motivation to play. Performing and playing with other musicians was the most fun I can have, now I don’t have anyone to play with. Any advice appreciated.

So happy to hear that. To me, guitar helped my life so much so guitar is inspiration! Guitar stye is inspiration, someone doing well is inspiration! You can focus on other than yourself? First, be a great listener, just enjoy listening great music! Listen Donny Hathaway "LIVE" You can listen 2-3 times a day for 30 days! Music will live inside of you! Keep that music anytime you need. Work on triads!

@@TomoFujitaMusic I will do exactly that. Thank you Tomo. I love the challenge of my selfish view. But yes, I had even stopped listening to music as much of late as listening to the music I loved reminded me of my loss of opportunities to even play. I would hear, say, Grant Green really having fun going back and forth with McCoy Tyner and just feel sad that I have no opportunities to bounce ideas off someone myself. I had shut songs off while driving or around the house because I’d just be sad. I guess I’m mourning the personal loss of live music for me? But you’re right, ultimately this is a kind of selfish view where I’m denying myself even the fun of music because of my lack of opportunities to play with others.

Can I ask a question ? I want to know of a way to get better at applying what I am practicing to my music. I recently got over a long hurdle where I stuck because I just memorized shapes (scales, pentatonics) and didnt know exactly how to apply them fluidly to my writing/ improve/ writing. Although I understand so much more and I get how the CAGED system actually works and have been really digging into traids, I feel like Im beginning to get good at "Practicing" I understanding knowing how to practice is crucial. However, I dont want to be the guy who has an amazing practice routine and is learning, but is not becoming a better player. I think our collective goal is to be awesome guitar players, not awesome practicers. All that to say : How do I take this awesome information and apply it to my guitar playing in a musical context ?

    • @TomoFujitaMusic

Sure! No memorization! That's way too easy! Do a little more slow way... So please learn Major scale on one string... Name of notes, intervals and Ear Training Singing. Next please learn harmony! Triad inversions. R M3 5 / M3 5 R / 5 R M3... Only 3 inversions! So learn them super slowly! 3 ways! I teach everything at my Guitar Wisdom. Thank you so much!
