    Hi Tomo,
I am a student over at guitar wisdom. Thank you so much for what you do. I wanted to share my goal and experience with guitar.
I wanna make/play music that someone would want to listen to and enjoy and make them feel happy and forget about themselves and life for a bit. If I can do that for even just one person then I am happy. It would be an amazing feeling for someone to go “could you play that one thing? I really need to hear that one” and I could play it for them smoothly and all the way through. Especially without any doubt or fear or nervousness in my mind. I struggle with anxiety and I don’t want it to hold me back from this goal. I feel like it has the past 4 or so years I’ve been playing.
Also, I have experienced learning something and the joy of really practicing consistently, getting it down and being able to not think and just play. It is such a happy and calm experience. I played this particular thing at a school performance in an auditorium and although I was nervous before and right at the beginning. Once I got into it and especially towards the end - I could just look out at the space I was in and not at my guitar. It was a kind of peace I hadn’t experienced before.
    Thank you again,
    Tim

Thank you for the content Mr Fujita, I've been playing for a little over 9 years, as of the last 2 years I no longer have a teacher as I felt sufficiently prepared to trace my own path, I feel like the more we develop our abilities, the more we demand for ourselves, it's like reaching for the top of the mountain and then seeing it grow taller the closer we get to the peak. The comment about not overdoing things feels spot on! I spent a long time doing an 8h practice routine and the more I pushed that the more I felt myself getting burnt out, the more I relaxed and stop being so demanding to myself the more I felt like the practice was effective. I guess our biggest enemy is ourselves, our anxiety to get results when we should give time. "Don't worry, don't compare, don't expect too fast"

Edit: I should add, what prompted me to go back and fill in my gaps was barely having any improvement over a decade. I told myself, well, I can go back an do it the right way and be a much better musician 5 years from now, or I can continue on this path and be the same guitar player I currently am 5 years from now. It takes patience and being honest with yourself.
I found motivation by going back and filling in my gaps and being patient with myself. No more studying a different thing everyday. I play about 3 hours a day, I was obviously doing something wrong because I was not improving. That caused me to get burnt out. I found fun when I became more structured with my practice, and rediscovered my love for the instrument instead of being frustrated. I spent weeks only playing Dm7, Gmaj7, and Cmaj7 triads on the top 3 strings. I was using Band-in-a-Box to loop a ii-V-I in Cmaj. By the time I added the next string grouping I had the E, B, and G string group solidly under my fingers. I had failed to learn them that well multiple times before. I would practice them for two or three days and not touch them again for weeks, or months.
Take the message Tomo says to heart. Read his shirt in this video and internalize it. When I was in boot camp they told us "the days drag, but the weeks fly by." That is how it works with guitar. The first time I revisited practice videos was at the 6 month mark. I knew I had improved, but it was mind blowing by how much. I considered myself an early-advanced guitarist with blues/rock when I started using Tomo's approach. Now I see I was a solid intermediate that had some knowledge gaps. It's been a few years now and I can't fathom how I didn't realize this sooner. I spent 10 years at the same level. In the last 3 years I have improved more than I had in the previous 15. It's hard not to be motivated when you're getting small victories all the time that lead up to big ones.

Thanks for sharing. Guitar is unique instrument. If someone learned quickly from PDFs or Tabs.. all the shapes and no theory backup. Could stay 10 or 20 years exactly same level... just more songs & more gears!
If you have 2-3 hours a day, that's amazing! Many pros wishes having 3-4 hours practice time a day. All depends on how you organize your time and how to pacing for what area? Just Don't worry anything! but you need to notice something (what possible to work on) Please join my Guitar Wisdom. You will LEARN how to LEARN. Thanks so much!

Don't use any backing tracks! Instead, you prepare your own rhythm guitar parts with a metronome. You can record that part to support your triads or soloing practice session. "Learn" "Prepare" then "Work" Nothing you can start like.... just jump in with backing tracks!

I would love to get advice from you face to face, but I would be very happy if you could answer my questions even here. The reason I started playing guitar was the idea that it would be more comfortable to play my own songs on stage with the guitar. I want to add some nice atmosphere to my songs with the guitar. What can I do to establish a more jazzy composition style? And I'm losing motivation because of my technical problems.

I've been "playing" for 2 years now and got into a kind of rut early on where i would learn standard tuned songs from 90s video games and play only those. I ended up gaining decent skill at picking specific strings, down & up picking, i can use my pinky pretty well and can play 2 songs rather well but had zero guitar fundamentals(outside of being able to play a D,A, and E chord & switch between them semi quick, but not coordinated enough to strum a song). I got down on myself because i felt like i had gotten nowhere in 2 years and your channel really helped lift my spirits and also helped me refocus on actually learning guitar. I love music and so often i will hear a song or a riff that i want to learn and feel a better sense of purpose on my learning Journey.

2:46 : I feel before I continue, to share, I have been a musician since childhood on saxophone, Berklee on a scholarship and all, but I didn't really 'get it' until I picked up guitar in late 2019. Total born again musician on guitar.
But now I have this experience, that in the beginning, practically, you advance so fast. You blow through all the beginner and intermediate stuff. It's so easy.
Then it gets slower and slower.
Most guitar players, they're stuck in the middle stage. They master all the basic skills within six months. They can play most pop tunes, not like the pros, but 'good enough.' or so we think.
Trust me, there's this abyss you need to cross, and on the other side is pure joy as an advanced player.
    It's very liberating.

Motivation is easy for me. Once I determine upon waking that I once again can function under my own power I am very Motivated to live another day fully. I truly do not know when I go to sleep if when I awaken I will be able to walk. ALS has a vicious history in our family. There are no early warnings. There are no test. So yeah, I am motivated.
Firstly - Whom are you playing for? Answer that to yourself.
Some are self-motivated like a Monk. They are able to self-recognize success and need not an audience. Others need a Video History. I use Video to prove to others how bad I was 2 years ago ( 4 open chords 4 strums each - muted - scratchy- nasty in 12 seconds). I am the odd one. Less than 2 years later 240bpm - 4 chords in 1 second. Now I have the rest of my life to clean that up and play with triads. I love the sound of Do Mi Ti (R-M3-7) triads.
Most need and should either Video or Audio Only record practice sessions at least weekly. Everyone has a Cell Phone. First time you do and you watch you will be upset on how bad it sounds. in a few weeks (with practice) you will look at past recordings and Laugh at how bad that was. Now grateful for those foundations.
Only you can decide if you want to be a copiest or artist. Either is fine. Some people make a wonderful showing of Covering Artist. Others seek Intervals and creating. Both types are Musicians. Both have the same basic foundations. If you can tune an instrument and play a single note clean - even an open string. You are a Musician.
I don't believe much about setting Goals. Humans tend to set goals too high so failure is eminent - the excuse is already written and ready. Be realistic. This week I am going to learn the names of the Strings. By the end of the Month the Names of the Whole Notes on the E string while I use a metronome to count and strum that string as I call out the Note Names. If you get done sooner - fantastic you've a knack for that - if it takes longer figure out why( work, illness, bad sleep, time management) what ever it is either adjust your life or the next goal. Give yourself a little longer and make the goal smaller. The more you foundationally know the better you will be at being able to set a goal. Its like, how do you know how many times your going to have to hit that nail into the lumber? How heavy is the hammer- How dense is the wood- how big is the nail? After a some experience you can glance at the nail and lumber and just know you will need to hit it 4 times with Your hammer.
Musical success happens in very small segments that overlap and piece together into Your Opus.
Am I (me personally) good enough to play songs in a band on a stage. NO.. (I don't know any songs really) Can I and have I gone busking and had tips? Yes! Playing slow and smooth intervals with a Spanish/Renaissance influence and no meter or key. My rules.
Peace be with you. Play Hard.

I’m really enjoying these early lectures Sensei Tomo. They are helping my day significantly. I was actually hoping you would post one this morning haha. I actually took yesterday off to relax a little, but normally I practice every day especially during the week. This week has been a bit exhausting for me so I was a little burnt out. Sharing your daily is very very helpful you have no idea. I would like to share my daily with you to see what you think. I usually get up around 4:30-5:00am and start my practice which consists of a Chromatic warm-up. I warm up with the spider walks, then take out the metronome to practice Scales and Modes for about 15-30 minutes. After that, I take my kids to school. When I get back, I’m working on the CAGED system/Chord inversions for about an hour. This I do with pure study and a backing track to stay on time…. Next I’ve been studying and learning Eric Clapton unplugged Album with sheet music an Audio. Then, I do an hour workout/eat lunch. After that, I do a 15-20 minute singing worm-up, then practice a set-list I’m getting ready for a gig…. HaHa, what are your thoughts on my routine…. Thanks again so much for your time and expertise. I appreciate you very much 🙏

Thanks for sharing. So happy to hear that you enjoy my talk video. Maybe some of your part of routine a little too long. Do something one hour is way too much! The most is 30 minuets and try to finish one subject. I recommend to practice 1212... chromatic. Avoid anything too difficult ones. Modes no need more than 10 minutes. Stay focus on intervals on one string approach more. Avoid anything scale shapes. (too easy!) Do not learn anything from diagrams! Don't think CAGED shapes. Learn triad inversions (thinking about each intervals)Avoid visual shapes as much as possible! You're welcome! Do not use any backing tracks from any source but you can practice rhythm guitar with a metronome and you can create your own backing tracks playing by YOU & A metronome then so productive!

I stay motovated by learning. I have played for 50 plus years and I learn something EVERY DAY. I have a strict routine brought on by age. My fingers are not as fast as the used to be. Scales, arpreggios, triads and chord shapes. (caged, major, minor and diminished) Then I work on what ever idea , concept, riff whatever that caught my eye (ear) . I subscribed to your channel years ago becaus you always have something to work on. Often I find its not a new thing but a different way to look at it. I play for me. I quit the stage years ago because I just don't enjoy it any more. I play for the enjoyment the guitar has always brought me. Im always working on my own songs. Thats where the real enjoyment is for me. When Its right and good I am one happy old guitar player. I must know thousands of songs by artist but I don't play threm very often. I would rather play the blues or work on a style I have not played much. My new thing is Jazz. You want to learn to -play guitar the learn to play Jazz. Thank you for what you do. You help keep me motovated.

Thanks for sharing Tomo. These talks are really helpful. I had just spent a productive 90 minutes today taking a jazz blues exercise in F I had worked on this week with my tutor and re-voiced it into Bb. with the goal of finding appropriate root,3,7 voicings and inversions that require minimal left hand movement. My brain was starting to get tired but I was about to start on my triad exercises. I decided it was better to take a break, watched this and it has already helped enormously as it reminded me of the need to recharge before going again.

Hi Mr Tomo. I'm 20 and been playing since I got my first guitar at 14. I got into J rock and two years ago, I started learning and sharing guitar tab covers in my channel for fun. I just loved the guitar styles of the songs and even learned the techniques, and musical patterns in my improvisations and share them for my viewers.
Lately, I've been struggling to keep up with it due to the hard work making tabs, analyzing the original guitar parts, video editing, track making etc. and I'm losing interest in playing guitar and music altogether. I also hear other guitarists that are better than me which makes me feel quite inferior.
To add on, I had some negative experiences in the past with a huge band club organization in college where the toxic and fast paced work culture drained me both mentally and emotionally, ultimately leading me to quit.
Basically, i'm at crossroads now, unsure whether I should try re-igniting my passion for guitar or if it's time to focus on other interests. I feel like my skill in guitar is wasted if I stopped.
I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance. Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Tomo I think I have the answer, at least this is the answer for me.
    □ Not giving a sh*t about if other people think your playing is good or not, but at the same time always improving.
    □ Listening to lots of music and learning it.
    □ Realising that if you want to be great one day you have to practise, otherwise you would have wasted your time and have lots of regret.
    □ Just picking up the guitar. I might away from my guitar and not feel good about my level of playing. But then I pick it up and I am like "damn I am actually pretty good".

I’ve been loving these videos that have been more philosophical. My issue is not motivation. I love playing guitar, and I want to pick it up every second I can. But my issue is not having the time to play, and not having well-defined goals. I want to be a better guitarist, but I also want to be a better songwriter. When I actually get the opportunity to practice, I just want to do everything, which will often lead to an inefficient practice session. I’m going to try to use a notebook and plan out my practices better as you suggested, and hopefully that will improve my efficiency. Thank you Tomo for sharing your wisdom with us.

So happy to hear that. I enjoy hearing everyone's experiences. You can think about a few different goals. 1) Dream goal 2) Realistic goal 3) Simplest goal etc. That's why I start with two items for daily routine. You can even do each one for two minutes but you have to believe these are so great 100%! If you even doubt a little (Is this working?) then no good! You need to fool yourself! Better song writer! Triads! Transcribe any great songs that you love! Do everything won't work! Without my little note book, I can not accomplish my life in general. You're very welcome!

I started my guitar journey about 1 year ago. The initiative was to learn Jay Chow's 'Qingtian' (acoustic)and John Mayer's 'Slow Dancing in a burning room' (electric).
Now I'm able to play the former song but yet to start to learn how to play an electric guitar.
I think what really motivates me is to build a clear structure for understanding the level of music, both in music theory and technique. Then set up a plan for myself and constantly get feedback by practising.
Right now, I'm happy that I am getting better on fundamentals but what frustrated me is that I don't know where this path is leading to. Imagine if I learned the next song of goal, I will be lost and demotivated again.
I really wonder how to set proper goals at different level

The other issue is instantly recalling great lick ideas on the fly. Much like those comedy sitcoms where George Constanza wishes he'd said something else during a sound argument well after the fact, I wonder what it takes to be able to freely play cool established licks whenever it's my turn to solo. I constantly find myself getting so jazzed as I explore unfamiliar scales by harmonising them. Good sir, I salute you for your services to professionals and amateur musicians alike. I think the two hardest principles for me to practice are Don't Compare and Be Kind to Yourself and failing at these kills my motivation.
My eventual goal is to write some kind of catchy melody, maybe even a real song, you know, a whole song, with words maybe... and with sections, chord changes, melody, and dynamics. But, when I stumble upon a nice melody, I often forget it by the time I am able to save the idea. And when I can save an idea, I come back to it and I don't feel it again and wonder why I saved it. So it winds up: I suck compared to ..., and all my attempts at creating a song are lame ... , so I tell myself that it is long past time to sell my guitar and take up knitting or gardening.
The other thing is plateaus ... when I feel like nothing is getting better. At best, I'm just keeping from getting worse. If I stop playing for a few days, things get worse of course... and then I build back to where I was, up to the same plateau as before, but never better. So I think that it's maybe as good as I can ever get. And it never seems good enough... compared with a "real player" or a "real songwriter".
The nature of the plateau changes with time. I used to just auto-pilot and run legato scales, hoping to stumble over a nice pattern that no one has ever played before.... before that it was pentatonic mayhem and hard-rock riffage.... and now I'm kind of stuck cycling through endless descending II-Vs in as many inversions as I can put together, trying to voice lead it all into infinity... but it is still, in the end, a rote regurgitation of something learned or imitated. Not creative and not meaningful... unless a wonderful accident happens.
Then you hear a new song and get inspired, or hear something in an old song that you never heard or thought about before... and you think.... yes, I can do this. And start the cycle again.
After all the practice and video lessons, I find that just sitting and searching for a melody helps get into a "flow", where I don't think of time and I can follow sounds down the rabbit hole to see where they go. Those are sort of "unicorn moments", when you let the music breathe and an element of luck creeps in... lucky noodling I call it, where you stumble on something and you can develop it by "sound" and not by thought or functional analysis based on some theory.
The hardest part is accepting the limitations of age. Arthritis makes repetitive motion like picking painful. No more Al DiMeola, Steve Morse, or Paul Gilbert content for me these days! Fingers that don't flex make fretting unnecessarily complex and also painful. I also find that I have to separate practice time from playing time - and both require some warm-up.
I use chromatic scales for a simple warm-up and that leads nicely into the 1212 exercise for "low noise" and "good dynamics" practice - as well as downstroke-only and alternate picking (and lately, finger picking). After that I'm ready to do the swing R37 progressions on one of the jazz standards or one of the 16th note funk strumming songs on the Guitar Wisdom site. By the time I'm done with that, I'm ready to throw the metronome out the window (15 minutes of click click click click) on 2 & 4 or 1,2,3,4 drives me bonkers! Then it is time to put the guitar down and come back later to "play" instead of "practice".

Thanks for sharing. Use iPhone video for recording any melody or chords ideas. Same time listen any great songs that you like... transcribe more music so your ears can catch nice melody & fun chords! Separate performance & practice session so you can practice those two things without any expectations. That's how I practice them everyday for better tone, better rhythm, better (no noises) then writing songs & practice as performance. More fun! I am aiming for a little above the middle! There are so many amazing players out there! I don't expect too much! but any levels, I go for the quality! When you practice these foundation ... 1) 1212 chromatic 2) R 3 7 Swiing groove with a metronome ... you need to believe something super positive. You cannot have even 1% doubt about that.

I’ve been playing guitar for 4 years now, I took guitar lessons for one year last year and stopped because the last few months there wasn’t the same excitement.
It has been a few months now that I stopped guitar lessons, now I try to practice differently, I am a big Hendrix and Santana fan, but right now I want to be able to play like Hendrix with the same feeling he had, I also want to be able to catch up songs by ear (which is something Hendrix was able to do). So I don’t really know how to organise myself and what to practice in order to achieve my objectives.
When I pick my guitar I just want to play, I can’t find the motivation to practice because I think I’m losing playing time, playing is more funny than practicing, I think that’s where my problem is.
I really like your video, thanks tomo.

Thanks for sharing. Even guitar lessons, so many different approaches & paces & amount of information. My first guitar teacher (at small music school in Kyoto Japan) this guy was not happy person and I was very discourage by this lessons. So meet with right guitar teacher... takes time to find out! Learning songs & learning foundations are different. You don't want to mix up in the beginning. To be able to do like Hendrix... Learn triads very well and don't follow visually shapes! Hendrix had amazing musical experiences and I am sure great musicians around taught Jimi about harmony. If you listen " Red House " LIVE " In the West ".. clearly he uses drop 2 chords (7th) top 3 notes .. moving smoothy! Without any theory knowledges... to control those naturally... takes many years!
