  • No crank/no start diagnosis on a 4th gen Maxima. I cover a basic ignition switch check, then a little more in-depth on the connections at the starter itself.
I ended up not making a video of the solenoid replacement due to the lighting issues.

I loved this video, so informative, im going to check out a bunch of ur other vid's ... maybe I need a new solenoid, I really dont kno but I wont rest until ive solved the problem. The best part of ur video was the end when you returned and turned the Maxima over on the first attempt. Mann, hav I been longing to hear that crank & start. Like a dream come true, I swear I smiled so hard-like i was hearing/witnessing my own baby crank and come to life. Soon, hopefully real soon.

I'm having a no crank no start issue as well on my 96. Battery, relays, starter are all good. I have a Prolock immobilizer hooked up to the ignition and I'm gonna see if switching the ignition switch does the trick. Could the issue ever be engine related though?

+Hamilton Sanchez On a no-crank? Only if the engine is seized up.

I shorted the solenoid terminals on mine with the screwdriver. ignition on, clutch in. but nothing happened, no click, no start, nothing. do I need a new starter?

+Sean Butler You could very well need a starter, but first I'd measure the B+ post at the starter to make sure you're getting power, and I'd suggest (as a temporary test) running a jumper cable from the negative post to the starter housing, these cars are very bad about starter grounding issues, especially right after a trans removal.

boredmder , omg, I so need ur help... I hav the same 96'Max GLE and my mechanic doesn't seem to have an answer to my 'No START issue'... he did change my steering wheel so maybe its the ignition switch which is giving me the problem. I would love for you to actually look at it... I'm in Atlanta, Ga. But my car is Miami, FLa. How much would you charge to do that same diagnostic check? If im able to get the car shipped to you..? I wish it could be as simple as showing my mechanic that video -but I don't want him working on it anymore. He's lost all credibility with me.

+Jah Cousteauu PM me with the issues you're having, and I can give you some ideas. I don't want you to have your car shipped to TN for a simple fix.

+boredmder Ok, i definitely have a NO Crank, No Start issue. My Starter, Alternator, and battery is good, (although, i keep having to replace the battery every month or so -all this while the Car has been sitting there in the shop -No Drive). So something is definetly shorting the Battery out,(i've went thru i think 3-4 Batt's) When the key is turned, you can hear the click(clicking), and thats it. My battery connections is strong and the lights are bright when turned on, i just had them replaced as well. Other than that i have no idea what is going on with my baby. Its been sitting at the mechanic for over a year now, these last 4-5 months it hasn't been worked on at all, he just has my car parked in his backyard because i've been working out of the state. He's given up on it and like i said i don't feel comfortable with him messing around on it, i could've been doing all this practice work/experimenting on my own car. smh. He kept saying that spark is coming all the way up thru the car, and it should turn over he thinks it the Crank shaft position sensors, he's encountered that problem before and the problem was fixed by replacing them. i did order those parts, front and back i believe -but off of Ebay, and you kno you don't always get the best parts for your money so he thinks even though they were brand new, they must have been faulty and i should buy them again from Discount Auto Parts because "on ebay you get what you pay for" but id like to check all my fuses, replace my battery again, do the crank shaft position sensors, the solenoid, and the ignition switch and just take my turn doing one of those things at a time until i get my baby to start again.
He was originally doing an engine swap for me and I'm hoping, hoping, hoping, that its nothing mechanical and a simple fix. What a shame, cause i drove my car over there and it was working and running fine it just had an oil leak from hell, and it was over heating. i had just bought the car and figured i'd put a rebuilt engine in there to fix all if any problems so that i wouldn't have to encounter any of this and then this guy can't put my car together, such a waste a time and energy. i tell you i should've done the whole engine swap and a ll the work myself, and really learned my car.

+Jah Cousteauu Yea, I can't message you either. Crank sensors have no bearing on whether or not the engine actually cranks, and that holds true for every vehicle I've ever worked on.
You'd pretty much just have to go through what I show here, though I've got an idea of what it could be. For some reason on these cars corrosion tends to build up between the engine and the bellhousing, which is also where the starter grounds through. If you don't sand down the mating surfaces (which in most cars there would be no point, so no one gives it a second thought). It's actually a pretty common thing to crop up right after you've split the engine and trans for whatever reason.
Easiest way to check is to run a jumper cable from the negative post to the body of the starter, and it should start right up.

+boredmder , ok i will give that a try, I've gotta get in touch with my mechanic, or just get my car shipped up here.

Yea I'm definitely going to have to make a trip back to miami soon and grab up my baby, so that i can finish her off, i need that car. I've wanted that thing for So long and I've sunk so much money into her already its ridiculous. I will try the Bell Housing, and the mating surfaces, for sure, i hope thats what it is, it'll save me a $3000 fix ,cause i sure was gonna get another rebuilt engine and have a certified (Master) mechanic do a swap for me.. my goodness, if thats all it is i owe you some money. And i WaAY…, appreciate it to the fullest. Now i can put that money else where… i still wanna get airbags, and body work done…
***Oh quick question***, i have a 96' GLE and i have a 97' engine in there, do you think that -that could be the problem…?
