You asked it, you got it! We finally take a look at the Razer Ornata, with its mecha-membrane switches. This keyboard gave me a LOT of material to work with, hence why it turned into a pretty big project. Hope you enjoy the video! :)

Oh boy, my friend has this and defends it to no end. This will be fun
My coworker has one and loves it. The only thing I'll give to Razer is that it has 6KRO on a rubber dome, which is uncommon like what Thomas said. If you really prefer rubber domes over switches, then this one is for you I suppose. However not my cup of tea.

Thank you. I saw this keyboard in the store. I actually really liked the "flood" look of the lighting and the way the keys felt on a quick poke through the cutout in the box, and I thought the wrist rest looked nice. It was on the lower end of my price range for a new keyboard, so I was considering it. Now I know that every feature I thought looked good is actually trash. You saved me buying this, and definitely gained my subscription for that. Fascinating channel, thanks again.

This is my favourite keyboard review ever. During the lockdown I wanted to cheer myself up with a new keyboard and I had no idea what to buy as I had only used the cheapest keyboards until then. After some brief surfing on shopping websites, this was on my list but then I came across this review! Anyway, I got me and my wife a razer blackwidow elite each and we love our new keyboards. Thanks for this great review. Looking forward to hear your opinion on blackwidow elite as well :) Take care!

The way they are packaged lets you click the arrow keys while they're still in the box, so I always like to click a bunch of the buttons on these keyboards at Target as I pass by but every single key feels and sounds different. I would've liked them if they weren't so unbelievably inconsistent.
I love a smooth soothing voice is raging and cursing over keyboards
Your voice is honestly soothing af almost fell asleep to this review and I mean that in a good way.
Like this comment if you think the Razer Ornata is a truly endgame worthy keyboard, and is superior to all mechanical keyboards and Kustoms. These comments don’t make sense now, since this is an edited comment. Congrats.
Basically a mushy, loud rubber dome with some tactility

@@computercomputer8922 That's a really bad advice as far as I am concerned. Why upgrade keycaps when you don't have decent switches in the first place? Not to mention the non-standard layout and extra keys both of which would make the process of finding compatible set painful.
@@computercomputer8922 Show me a Tai-Hao set that's readily available and has 1U Windows keys. Not to mention he could have ISO layout.
@@computercomputer8922 Okay. So he should swap ABS keycaps for other ABS keycaps and lose backlighting for 36+ bucks. Is that what you're recommending? Common, man. Also, no ISO Enter, only bigass.
At that point, I'd rather desolder the Cherries and use some Zealios or Kailhs instead. It would be cheaper and actually constitute a meaningful upgrade.
Just get a Unicomp buckling spring. :p Doesn't look like a glorified Christmas display and I don't even have any winkeys or key legends.
I love how intense the typing demo feels because of the rgb
After using this keyboard for a while you can tell which keys you have used more since the "mecha" part of the key switches wears out after a bit which kind of sucks
The intro is ASMR and so is your voice :)
the inconsistency is caused by the leaf springs, they are probably made with a cheap alloy and their elasticity doesn't stay the same after a few weeks of using.
Yeah, that's my guess as well.
@@Chyrosran22 Btw, after getting that shit Ornata keyboard, I got myself "educated" (thanks to you and your channel) and now I have a K70 with all keys replaced with Box Jades ;), thanks!
Mine never showed this inconsistency after 1.5 years of daily usage. I dont type bottomming out in general though
ok, what option do i have if i want clikiness but less than mx cherry blues? and less price? cause now i'm just confused; I hate browns; all i want is a solid tactile sensation in a subdued clicky switch. where do i get that from? Mx blues are too noisy; mx browns are too easy to actuate; where do i go?

I had the exact same option after just a few minutes in a store further confirmed after a co-worker bought one and complained of the loss in tactility after just a few weeks of use

This review perfectly encapsulates how I feel having to use one for the time being.
I just love the way he says hideous
*Mecha-Membrane keyboard exists*
Me: *Confused typing*
I suppose the only instance where a shorter keycap would improve actuation speed is if the keycap was so rubbery and mushy that you're essentially pressing down on the stem through the keycap.
I haven't noticed any difference between my two keyboards in terms of actuation speed despite one having bog-standard Cherry profile keycaps while the other sports DSA profile keycaps.
I’ve had my ornata for YEARS and it still works super well. Also mecha membrane means it’s got membrane for the spring back, and mechanical sensors
What’re ya talking bout? It’s just a crap rubber dome with an unnecessary clicker
Mechanical sensors? I’m assuming you don’t actually know how keyboards work so I’ll explain this now. The membranes are not the rubber domes. The membranes are thin sheets of plastic with contacts printed onto them. They work by squishing two layers together through a spacer. The rubber domes go over the membranes to create key travel and a tactile event. There is no “mechanical sensor” in this keyboard. This is how every membrane keyboard works. The reason why mechanical keyboards are called mechanical is because there is an actual mechanical process happening to close a circuit. In Cherry switches, the slider pushes against two metal contacts which makes touch together and closes the circuit. There is no membrane in mechanical switches. This Ornata is basically a fancy Dell keyboard
Oh boy, my friend who owns this keyboard almost succeeded to convince me to buy this Trainwreck.
Yes to the comment about putting an alps leaf into an MX switch. This needs to happen.
Your voice and humor combined are the best
To those who bought Ornata V2, do you find some keys not consistent in terms of clickiness?
thanks for this review, i was considering this as i dont game, but i do a lot of typing and i like the short stroke of laptop keyboards, but also wanted a little more tactile feedback, and slightly larger keys, i played with a store demo, but the build quality had me on the fence, i have a feeling the rollover would be a problem, my current laptop does appear to have nkro
This review is what I call HARD LOVE. Thomas is very funny, but he is very serious at the same time! He is the METER in keyboardland. And he is great teacher. An educator really.
I have used this keyboard for a few years now, and I don't have ANY of the problems you mentioned except the light bleed part.
One of the top DPS in my guild swears by this keyboard. I tried one that was out on demo and it wasn't that bad.

so I've been using this keyboard for about 5 years and finally ordered a new one, hopefully I've gotten better at picking good products since then
This kb feels absolutely fantastic for about 5 minutes in the shop. I always find myself reverting to my good ol' Cherry MX Browns though. :)
Though to be fair, the reviewer seems to have a somewhat defect example. Mine doesn't warp like that and is perfectly stable with the legs extended.
I’ve watched this an unhealthy amount of 19 times.

13:19 Wow, you can really hear how rattle-y the spacebar sounds. You'd at least expect decent stabilizers, but nope. You get that. Thank you so much for this review, this is one of my least favorite keyboards of all time.
I wanna know because I have 2 keyboards I have the razer ornata chroma and a redragon k552 but I don’t know which one is better the k552 is mechanical

I was like wtf doing a review on this old shitty keyboard. Then i learned this is the man who speaks the truth earned a sub LOL
Haha, if you think this one is old, you should see some of the others I've reviewed! xD
Sadly, Ornata is one of the best Razer keyboards. (because it works)
yea, that's gotta mean something.
And, 10KRO in Ornata doesn't mean you can press 6 letter keys+4 modifiers?
But it's still bulshit because i can't find any shortcut that uses over three modifiers and that's ridiculous how Razer uses marketing tricks that would be barely acceptable in 30$ membrane keyboard, but in the really great Cherry MX board price range, it's just a joke.
Rollover comprises the MINIMUM amount of keys you can press, so the modifiers are irrelevant. However, they also don't make it go over 6, no.
@@Chyrosran22 Yep, it still is 6KRO and never denied that.
but some companies use 10KRO to tell that keyboard has better rollover (which is obvious bullshit)
@@lugi1 yeah, I'm really not sure how to even achieve that xD .
lol, Razer Ornata finally matching the reputation of their mice. Flimsy piece of utter crap that is a joke next to Chinese brands that go for 1/3rd the price. Who even buys their junk mice and keyboards anymore? I guess the A4tech clone keyboards could be okay, but those are made by the vastly superior, if tacky a4tech and cost a bloody mint!
@@anasevi9456 Ironically, their mice are actually decent now, while their keyboards are shit. We've gone full circle.
Thank you so much I was going to buy this keyboard as a replacement but seeing how mushy and inconsistent this keyboard is I will just keep mine
Have you ever put a rubber dome inside an mx keycap? It still gives a hard bottom out but makes the switch highly tactile.
As a former owner of this *terrible* keyboard, I can definitely say the upgrading experience was a huge relief. I was lucky enough to resell it for 80$ (USD)
I started watching your review of this "gaming" rubber-dome keyboard fully expecting it to suck.
Glad I wasn't wrong :)
Hey, at least it lights up very _tastefully_ -like a circus- so the consumer group it's marketed to will be fully satisfied!
It's a mushy, inconsistent, bleeding, slightly tactile Christmas tree, just in time for December! :D

@@jasondoe2596 Indeed!
Eh, I have one and it's great
Eh, I'm sure it could be much worse!
This thing cost 52 usd in my country, is this keyboard worth to buy? Or should i buy logitech g213? In my country g213 cost only 42 usd?
10:56 that weird texture wears down quite quickly and after 3 years Im still in love with the rest
To achieve 10 key rollover, you need to put it in Game mode.
I've been using this keyboard on my PC for a year and I like it just as much as my Logitech G610 I use on an iMac. Since you probably rank the MX Browns in the G610 somewhere between stinking Rhino dung and a gallon of milk that's 6 years past its expiry date, I feel my taste in keyboards is pretty consistent.
The only thing I really DON'T like about this keyboard, is the backlighting - unless you light up the ENTIRE keyboard, it's useless. As you demonstrated, lighting up a single key, lights up a neighbouring area similar to the numpad in size.
Never really thought of the keys as inconsistent - I may have noticed a difference in sound, but put it down to a charming quirk of the keyboard.
After watching your videos I've started to realize that my G610 may indeed be a bit scratchy, but I haven't used anything similar to a buckling spring keyboard in literally decades.
I would like to get my hands on one of those... Fujitsu...(?) keyboards that use the "tombstone" keycaps - I remember these from when I was a student, and they were maybe even better than the IBM keyboards.
I've got an old Apple Extended keyboard II - but my ADB to USB adapter somehow makes at least one key unavailable (on a Mac). Together with the IBM and Fujitsu (?) keyboards, the Apple Extended II make up my All Time Top 3 - but I'm quite happy with my G610 and Razer Ornata Chroma as daily drivers.
The only thing I don't like about my G610 is that the keycaps have come loose at times - I like to tap the arrow down in a sort of "lazy but like a bawse" fashion, but I had to stop doing that. Even if the stems of the keys aren't fully exposed, I do believe the old fashioned "turtleneck" style of having the stems FULLY covered by the top plate was a good idea.
Keep up the good work!
Agree the huge inconsistency shown in the keyboard on this video I believe is really not normal for an Ornata Chroma.
@@raulsaavedra709 probably due to a bad "batch" of leaf springs?
@@dragonsai3092 Maybe. I decide to record a short video myself showing how the keys on my Ornata Chroma sound. Will share the link shortly, not sure if RUclips might remove it. I will also share it in Tweeter in a reply to Chyrosran22, so at least it should remain there

I just want a keyboard that wouldn't make me look like a fool if I tried to use it in public, but i could still make it look nice at home
One of my weirdo coworkers loves this keyboard. I tried them out for a few seconds so my comments aren't that valid but they are disappointing. I prefer my Razer greens and especially my Unicomp buckling springs. What's worse is Cooler Master has a similar keyboard that's $70 dollars and includes a "gaming mouse." So you get essentially the same keyboard plus a mouse for a cheaper than Razer price. Damn son. However if you really need this keyboard, Black Friday sales seem to still be up for this keyboard, dropping it from $100 to $75.

Of course they were referring to the fact that movement takes time to travel through an object as the molecules slam into each other, and thus having a shorter keycap design allows them to save about 1 microsecond off the actuation time /s
so there we have it excellent review btw.
I have the same keyboard at home. and the consistency across all the keys remain the same, i’m not sure what is causing the problem you’re having but it sure is weird. i bought mine last year for half it’s price so i was lucky enough to get it then. this keyboard might try to be some sort of “budget fake mechanical keyboard” but i’ve been using it for a year and the only problem i came across was the numlock indicator light burning out. besides that i say it is worth the price i paid (55€) and not it’s full price. Also, please don’t be offended by me saying this but you may have recieved a keyboard which has been worn out pretty well (which isn’t always great to review), otherwise i can’t explain the inconsistency in the keys, or the wobblyness of the keyboard when resting on the flipout feet. I still wouldn’t buy it if it was anything higher than 60€
