The New Standard Pen From Diamond Art Club!

  • Today I am checking out the brand new diamond painting pen from diamond art club!
Up until now all diamond painting companies have been offering the standard plastic straw and nylon tip with the brass insert.
Diamond Art Club have now upped their game by including a much more ergonomic pen in their new tool kit that comes preloaded with diamond painting putty that feeds the tip.
Gone are days of pink wax!
    Well, not quite...
The new branded pen is much thicker and more comfortable to hold than the standard straw.
It feeds putty to the tip by simply twisting the pen, very gently.
Twist too much and the putty keeps coming out if the tip. Like squeezing a tube of toothpaste too hard, but slower.
It does take a bit of practice to get it right but it's a great idea.
Extra putty is also included which should give hours and hours and hours of use.
The putty is very tacky but I did find it a bit stringy at times and it did leave some excess on the drills at times which I found difficult to completely remove.
A bit like trying to remove chewing gum.
The room temperature was 25C (77F), which may have made the putty softer than normal.
Having a white pen tip with white putty also made it difficult to see if there was excess putty around the tip.
I've been using tweezers to place drills for a couple of years now. I'm not used to seeing residue on or between the drills so I'm probably being a bit more critical.
I know that it will probably look fine from a normal viewing distance.
Overall, I think the new pen is a big improvement over the standard pens, being much more comfortable to hold and having the putty inside the pen means no more dipping in wax, unless you want to use the multi placers that come with the pen.
Diamond Art Club have always been a company that pushes the standards and quality of diamond painting kits and this pen is another step in the right direction.

Thanks so much for the review. I had no idea this change was coming. I use tweezers as much as possible but hope this new pen works out for me when I have to use it. It seems to be leaving a lot of residue compared to pink wax, or maybe it's just more visible because it's white. But I know this will drive me nuts. I think I'll be hanging on to all my extra wax for future use. I look forward to seeing your final thoughts on this. Thanks again.

Hi Susan, I think it is leaving more residue if that tiny section I did is how it’s going to be but we’ll see how it looks once I’ve finished the whole canvas.
For me, the bigger issue is that it’s very difficult to remove from the drills.
With pink wax it’s relatively easy to pick residue off with sharp tweezers.
The putty is more like trying to pick up soft chewing gum because it’s stringy and smears across the drill.
I think more work has to be done on the composition of the putty and I’m sure that DAC will be watching and listening to customer feedback.
      Time will tell.
      Thanks for watching! ☺️

Hello thank you for sharing! I can't wait to try mine out, though I'm completely new to diamond painting in general, yes it's putty changeable but can u ball up the old style wax and put it in? Or putty only.

Hi Tori, you can replace the putty with pink wax but completely removing the putty from the chamber takes time, patience and effort.
      I’m talking from experience. 😄
Thanks for watching and welcome to the wonderful world of diamond painting!

The new pens are being phased in, so not all kits have them yet.
This is a video showing how you can check which tool kit you are going to get with a diamond painting kit from Diamond Art Club.

I appreciate the review, Jim! I have a new kit coming next week and have been anxious to try to the pen. Did you happen to try the putty on any ABs, by chance? I've heard some, but not all, putties work with ABs.

I haven’t tried it on ABs yet but there are a couple in this kit so I’ll get a chance to try them.

I was thinking about what you said about the putty and tip being the same color. I think using a permanent marker around the tip will give you some contrast to see excess putty.

Ohh that’s interesting but I find the DAC kits too expensive for my budget I also use gorilla tack for my pen nibs it’s absolutely amazing and so so cheap a pack last me over a year I use it for making press on nails too so if your just using it for DP it’ll last 2 years a pack 😊

Hi Sharon, I’ve never heard of gorilla tack. I’ll need to look out for it.
Thanks for the tip (no pun intended) and thanks for watching! 😊

I can’t seem to find this new pen I’m a beginner and I am interested in using this. Do they sell it separately? What painting did yours come in?

Hi Angel, the new tool kits are being phased in. If you got to the DAC website and click on a kit then scroll through the thumbnails you will see which tool kit comes with that canvas. 🙂
