  • I'm not sure that the Canon 500mm F4 Super Telephoto lens actually qualifies as a vintage lens yet, but was released 25 years ago as of 2024. Therefore, how well does this lens hold up adapted to a modern Sony A7IV, and most importantly how is the image quality.Check out the video to see sample images of how this modern camera and older lens performed, and my thoughts after using them. If you have any experience with this lens or any other favorite 500mm telephoto lenses let me know about it in the comments.

Full Disclosure - I do not work for Sony or have any sponsorship from the company. This is my honest feedback and thoughts about the Canon 500mm F4 lens on the Sony A7 IV mirrorless camera.

Had a lot of fun going out with the 500mm f4 and shooting images of the birds. What is your experience with this lens or any other super telephoto lenses?

That's a beast of a lens, but the pictures are amazing! Great quality! Love the wildlife shots!

Thank you for the comment. It is definitely a beast to carry around, but the images really do make it worth it.

Nice video as usual. My all time favorite lens to date was the Nikkor 200-400mm Af-s F4. Very similar images to yours and similar weight. In a weird way I miss the weight. My hands felt it to the point of pain at times, but it seemed to strengthen my back and shoulders, both of which have issues.

It is really interesting how carrying the weight really makes me focus on what I'm doing. It is definitely a workout, but the images make it so worth it.

@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto Do you find yourself with the lens down studying the wild life a bit more carefully before picking your shots?

@@filmstudiojapan That is a great question. I find that a longer lens like the Canon 500mm puts up close in a world that I would otherwise not really be able to see. An example of this is being able to really look at all the feathers of a bird and in some cases see into their eyes the same way I would with say a portrait in the studio. For me it really is a journey that I absolutely enjoy. As for the shots, I actually study the area and chase reflections on the water to add color to the image naturally, or look for an interesting foreground/background and then mostly wait for the wildlife.

Thank you for the comment. Just by feel, the auto focus was pretty good and mostly crisp, but not quite as good as say having the lens mounted on a 1D Mark II say (the 1D II and this lens is my usual long focal length combination). The main difference is that the lens would hunt a little more on the Sony than with the native Canon EF mount mostly when trying to af on birds in trees. This was really minimal though, and would not stop me from using this lens/camera combination in the future.
