I like your videos they are helpful, you just got a loyal subscriber🥰🤭
Thank you!
Thanks, this is helpful💕.
Glad it was helpful for you
My current only GF lens is the 45mm and I think I might get this one next, but it’s putting me in a path to only have prime lenses on this body because the only other lenses I can see myself buying are the 50mm pancake and maybe the 500mm prime 😂
Thank you for the input. I'm a big fan of prime lenses in general, but I also appreciate the flexibility of a zoom lens. I think the 120mm is a great lens with a lot of versatility, but if you wanted to go with a zoom maybe the 100 - 200 f5.6 would be a better choice for you.
Good info - From India
Thank you for the feedback!
Try the Fujinon EBC 55mm f1.8 . Quite a good performer on GFX. Got mine for 20€.
Thank you for the feedback and suggestion!
Clipping highlights like crazy
Is this a Zeiss lens from old medium format or 35mm?
This is a vintage medium format lens with the Pentacon Six mount.
@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto thanks.
Interesting picks! Btw, Jena is a city in Germany, and is pronounced with a soft J, i.e. like Yena.
Thank you for the feedback!
Excellent review ... Bravo !
Thank you for the feedback!
@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto Btw. I have CZJ 35, 50, 80 and 135 mm...all are excellent ! Regards
Thanks for your time and dedication. You mentioned the image stabilization from Fuji Camera, does it work with the Carl Zeiss as well?
Thank you for the comment. Sorry if there was any confusion. The GFX 50S doesn't have image stabilization which makes the IS is the GF 120mm lens all that more important. The later GFX Cameras have image stabilization, but I have not used them with the CZ Jena 120 to test if the IS works.
Thanks anyway 😀
The f/2 isn't bad. Bur the f/1.4 and the f/1.7 are better lenses, and not much more expensive.
Thank you for the feedback. All 3 lenses can be found for a really good price, especially given the really outstanding image results.
Wish I could be there! Good luck! So glad your studio is coming together!
Thank you! The studio build has been quite the adventure. Can't wait to share more about it.
hi great video can I ask what adapter you use. I have the Sony a7riv and just bought the canon 500mm with the metabones v which is not working very good at all.
Thank you for the comment and question. I have an Alston adapter. It works well, but it does hunt a little more than I would like. I find it hunts when it has has to focus from near to far or far to near . If the focus is close it works great. To aid with this I will pre-focus in an area and that seems to work great.
In the off chance someone's wondering, to figure out if your camera is capable, aim a TV remote at the camera whole on a live view mode , hit a button, and if the LED lights up, your camera is IR capable. I tried this on my GFX and my wife's Sony A77. It light up nice and bright on the GFX (obviously) but the A77 it remained dark.
Thank you for the information. Good tips.
Very good, helpful video. Thanks. I recently made a deal with a friend to swap my GF110 f2 for their GF120 f4 . Our lens are currently en route to each other via UPS (!). I’m mainly interested in landscape photography and have other GF lens including some of the zooms. I generally want more not less dof in my photos. I realize now stopping down the 110 to f9 - f16 for greater dof takes it outside of its’ strongest performance area. I also had issues with the sort of etched, or outlined forms look, as opposed to rounded look I saw in the GF110 rendering of detail in distant landscapes. In any case as I shoot very few portraits Ive been regretting not initially getting the 120 instead. Admittedly without having tried it yet I just have a good feeling about the GF120. It will also be nice to have close focusing options.
Thank you for the comment and your experiences. Enjoy the 120 with your landscape work
You read like this: Carl Tzeiss Yena ! Not : Zeiss or Jena
Thank you for the feedback
Thank you for sharing. I have a large lens collection, but I am new to the GFX System. The 80 and 120 are also favorites of mine. I love how they handle sh*tty light. Both have somehow the ability to transform that into something beautiful and tactile.
Thank you for the comment. I adore the 8omm for low light, and it does really well with an IR filter on the GFX 50s. Super awesome vintage lenses.
Got this lens about a year ago at a thrift store in good condition for eight bucks and I LOVE IT, but I have other 50mm lenses I love more. Currently my Minolta 50mm 1.7 and Vivitar 50mm 1.8 are my favorite fiddy millimeter lenses. The Canon FD 50mm 1.8 also kicks ass.
Thank you for the comment and sounds like you had a good find for $8. I feel the same way about mine. I really like it, love the images, but have other 50's I use more. It really is hard to use them all.
I always found the 1.7 sharper overall, or certainly the samples I have when I was running them on the 35mm 5dmk2
Thank you for the comment. You have mentioned the same thing a couple others have said about the 1.7 being sharper. I have never really used the 1.7. Given the rave reviews here, I have added this lens to my list to watch for a good price for one.
No hot spots caused by your GF lenses? How about CZJ lenses you've adopted?
Thank you for the comment and the question. The GF lenses definitely have hot spots. So far, the best lens I've tried has been the CZJ 80mm on the Fuji GFX. It produces a minimal to no hot spot results.
@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto ...course I've not yet dived into GFX, but of all my X lenses the only one that has no hot spots is ancient XF 18-135mm, while all others are unusable. Interestingly enough, none of my Olympus OM glass showed any spots while shooting Infrared on my Fujis...
@@tomislavmiletic_ Thank you for the information. I'll add that the first digital camera I converted myself to see only IR was an old Olympus E410. I never had any issues with hotspots with any of the Olympus glass. I really got some cool results with that camera.
Thanks dude
No problem.
We should say to the newbies in analogue lenses : Purchase the SMC-M or SMC-A 50mm f2 FOR it's softness, FOR it's colour fringing, FOR it's coma and other optical faults. Because this lens produces exciting, not boring, pics.
Well said and thank you for the comment. This lens definitely produces images with an exciting character.
I've been using it on 100S for almost three years now! I think it's the best adapted C/Y Contax lens for GFX, except for those long focal length.
Thank you for the input and your experience.
Thanks for sharing! Could you tell me what your approach is to focussing? Do you use focus-peaking with red pixels? Do you just zoom in? Or do both at the same time? I find it hard to focus on a fast manual lens. So far, I have used Minolta 58mm f/1.2 and Mitakon 65mm. I have an order for 180mm Carl Zeiss on the way.
Thank you for the comment. I do a combination of approaches to focusing with fast manual lenses. When I setting up with a tripod and have a subject that doesn't move, I will definitely take advantage of zoom in to focus exactly where I want. Moving objects where it gets most tricky, but I've found the more I practice the more keeper images I get.
I was comparing 85mm lenses and the Contax was the only one I kept. So much better than the Mamiya IMHO and even the Nikon I tried. Liked it so much I got the 100 and that's even better! It's also the superior build quality that makes these so nice to use.
Thank you for the comment and for sharing your experiences.
If you're still using after 5 years, then I guess that's a YES 🤩
Thank you for the comment. 2 years after I made this video, I'm still using the 50s for fine art and commercial shoots. This camera just keeps ticking and producing amazing images.
Is the 120 CZJ a macro lens? I wonder how it compares to the GF 110 f/2. If you are going to use portraits in your examples, it seems like comparing it to the GF 110 is a better choice over the GF 120 macro.
Thanks for the feedback. The CZ120 is not a macro lens. I wish I had the 110 to compare, but did not have it available.
I was hoping for more technical information but now I'm not sure if the lens shown is worth the time. I'm A novice photographer going on since 2005 and most of my vintage lens are Olympus. Soon to get Olympus 135mm'f2.8. Entered with 135' JC Penny f2.8. ,which by my guess takes extra ordinary shots .
Thank you for the feedback. The vintage Olympus lenses are very nice, and I've used a couple really good JC Penny lenses, and a couple that weren't so good. Guessing it was because they sourced out to different manufacturers to make the lenses.
Really fascinating, thanks Marshall for documenting this entire process! It's not something I'm planning to try myself, but I really appreciate the video and your detailed instruction. Super educational, thank you! Edit: oh and by the way, your results are outstanding!
Thank you for the feedback.
Interesting experiment, thanks for the video Marshall. The clarity of that spider web between the lower and upper bridge sections was pretty amazing.
Thank you for the comment. The CZ lens glass is so good, and that spiderweb is a good example of just how good.
What’s the idea of using a 35mm film lens on the gfx sensor.
Thank you for the comment. The main reason is to see how this lens performs. It produces amazing colors and contrast, but can it handle the larger sensor of the GFX.
I am a pure amateur who loves taking pictures living in South Korea. I felt it after watching your video. You are truly the greatest photographer of this century. You have imprinted the true colors, light and focus in our hearts and memories. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the photography.
I have the 120 CJZ lens which I originally used on a Kiev 60 and now use with a Pentax 67 adaptation. I have always found this lens to be sharp but better is its beautiful rich and natural color rendering. It is also very light to carry!
Thank you for your comment and experience with the 120mm. The color is fantastic with this lens. This lens, like the 80mm CZJ are both really light, and that is super helpful carrying them around.
Find yourself a pancolar!
Thank you for the comment, as I sit here and day dream for a pancolar
@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto you wont be disappointed!
@@creepyoldhouseexplorersclub I had a 50 pancolar at one time years ago when I shot film. They are nice.
How about the AF with sony emount cameras
Thank you for the comment. Just by feel, the auto focus was pretty good and mostly crisp, but not quite as good as say having the lens mounted on a 1D Mark II say (the 1D II and this lens is my usual long focal length combination). The main difference is that the lens would hunt a little more on the Sony than with the native Canon EF mount mostly when trying to af on birds in trees. This was really minimal though, and would not stop me from using this lens/camera combination in the future.
I have a couple of them and the f series lense is my favorite. I use the pentax on my K-50. Works great.
Thank you for the comment and the heads up on the f series lenses.
I don't understand why anyone would put a lens for a 135 format on a somewhat of a medium format camera and not expect vignetting. I have this lens and as any CZ lens, it shines on the format it was meant for. It's color rendering is beautiful as is the bokeh. Much better, in my opinion, than even a Summicron-R 50mm which I also own. Use a Pentacon6 CZ lens on your Fuji to get rid of vignetting and get beautiful color rendering with high acuity.
Thank you for the comment and Pentacon6 CZ lenses suggestion. I use them regularly on my GFX camera. They are absolutely fantastic. This was an experiment to see how well the 35mm lenses did on the digital MF. Now we know. Over all the resolution holds up fairly well and they could be used if you are willing to crop the images and accept using a little more sharpening in post. Overall I agree that sticking to MF lens is probably the better idea, but I also know there are many of us that have the vintage 35mm lenses laying around and why not try to use them where we can.
I appreciate this video. Though the Zeiss 50 1.4 wasn't really on my radar, I have considered a nifty 50 comparison on the GFX, but can confidently say your video has excluded this lens from lenses I would consider. The barrel distortion alone was too much for me personally. If you have the chance to test the Zeiss 50 f4 for pentacon six, that is a lens I am often curious about. Obviously not going to have the most bokeh, but I imagine it's got some good points.
Thank you for the comment. I'm out currently, but I think I own the 50. It's either the 50 or the 65mm. Thank you for the inspiration for a soon to be made video.
@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto I'd also be interested if it's a 65mm as I am not away of that lens. The one I am referring to is the "Flexagon". Every day I consider selling my GF 250mm and invest in some older medium format glass for my own reviews. The advantage is of course they don't go down in value, so I can buy and sell to my hearts content. Disadvantage, the GF 250mm is such an epic lens, and it's hard to see a day when I will spend that kind of money again for a single lens.
@@filmstudiojapanDOTcom It might take me a few weeks but I will get a review out of the lens I have. I've heard really good things about the GF250. That would be a difficult lens to part with for sure.
The 65mm is more rare than the 50mm because they stopped making it in 1969. The 65mm was supposed to be only mediocre. A few years ago I set out to acquire the whole set of the CZ Jena lenses, but did not get one them because I ran out of funds at the time. When I get back from traveling I'll figure out which one I have and put it on the Fuji for some fun.
@@marshalljvanderhoofphoto Thanks for the info. Always interested to learn about lenses.
In the vintage lens world, the Contax zeiss are pretty much the best there is except maybe the Leica Rs.
Thank you for the input. The C/Y Zeiss lenses are amazing for sure.
Thanks for your effort on these videos. Excellent work.
Thank you for the comment and kind words.
! have one for a year and it is great. In the right situation- mainly in BW- it shines.
Sweet! Thank you for the comment. Glad you like it.
Another nice video :) pity that the vignetting is still limited by the image circle. I haven't used my M adapter on my GFX in a while so thanks for the reminder! My lenses are so small that they look silly but I haven't tried my new one yet 😅
Thank you for the kind words! The vignetting is a bummer, but cropping is an option, especially with the large GFX sensor. Also agree that the vintage lens are so light and small they do look a little odd on the larger cameras. I did like the idea of carrying around less weight all day with smaller/lighter lens though.
So fun to take the Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.4 lens out on Fujifilm GFX 50s. What are your favorite vintage lenses for the GFX system?
As I remember from the 1980´s, the Contax Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.7 T* was better tan the 1.4 !
@@JohnCross-rz5uq Thank you for the comment. That is interesting. I have never compared the 1.7 to the 1.4.
@@JohnCross-rz5uqNope, not in my comparison.
What do you mean it has good shallow depth of field, but doesn't hold up to other lens? Do you mean "Bokeh" or "quality of the out of focus areas" ? Depth of field is a stict mathematical property and ANY 135 f2.8 lens ( or zoom lens used at 135mm f2.8 ) will have THE EXACT SAME depth of field ( DOF ) - but of course different out of focus "look" or bokeh. The DOF is dependent on 4 main factors and WILL NOT change with different lens if all these are equal: focal length, aperture, distance to subject and size of sensor ( or film size ).
Thank you for your comment and the questions. I completely agree with you that DOF is a mathematical property. I am really referencing a few things in talking about the CZ and f2.8 DOF. I was really surprised how sharp it is at f2.8 since many vintage lenses are not necessarily as sharp wide open as they are when they are stopped down a couple stops. Additionally, I really like the the "quality" of the out of focus areas which surprised me given that it is an f2.8 lens and not an f2 or even lower. Overall I really like the lens but if someone is looking for a lens with shallower DOF the CZ 135 f2 would probably be a better choice. Hope this answers your questions.
Please CHANGE THE VIDEO TITLE to Carl Zeiss Sonnar 135mm f/2.8 to be easily found. Need to be specific. Title of the video is Lacking.
Thank you for the feedback!
Excellent video
Thank you!
Awesome!
Thank you
Thank you for reminding me about styles! I really need to set up a custom style as I do always seem to do the same several tweaks to photos, followed up with a couple of custom changes. That would make things so much faster for batch processing!
Thank you for the comment, and glad that you found it to be a good reminder. We all need those every once in a while.
I really enjoy spending as much time shooting photography as possible. By finding short cuts and using automation in editing tools really saves a lot of time for editing. Capture One Styles and Presets really helps with that. What's your favorite C1 or any editing app tool to save you time?
Just bought this lens for my Sony A7ii, this video makes me feel more confident to shoot with it, Thanks Marshall
Thank you for the comment! Congrats on the new lens. I really enjoyed going out shooting with it for this video. Hope you enjoy it and create many amazing images with it.
