  • One of the latest parks to join the Six Flags chain is located in between Buffalo and Rochester, New York, and is called Darien Lake! Now 'Six Flags Darien Lake,' this park is home to a variety of attractions, including Ride of Steel, Predator, Tantrum, and more! I visited this park for the first time in Spring of 2019-- this is what I had to say about it!

This is a nice park. It's my home park so I'll always have a special place for it. However, it could use some new rides, and definitely some new coasters. It's only been Six Flags for 2 years now, so give it time. They're revamping the water park for 2020, which is nice because it's legitimately a very good water park here. After that, we'll see what happens in the years to come.

"Moose, moose, moose on the loose!" Never gets old, also, I agree that Ride of Steel is so much better at Darien Lake. The straight section and the giant helixes fit when they're over the water. Grew up in the area, and used to go when it was Darien Lake Fun Country. The park is built on land that used to be a lake -- Darien Lake. Six Flags Darien Lake is a rural area, but the proximity to a major city is about the same distance as Kings Dominion to Richmond, VA. But I will agree there aren't many hotel options near the park.

Darien Lake is the park I grew up going to, I’m 17 and I’ve probably been going at least once a year sense I was like 5. we’ve been season pass holders for the last 5 years and now we have memberships. The park has gone through many ruff times financially in the last 12 years but I’m very glad it’s still kicking! I don’t like some of the ways that Six Flags runs the park, for example, the rides games and stores close at 9:30pm now when it was 10:00pm for decades. They have been doing the laser show (it starts 10 mins after the rides close) for as long as I can remember. Six Flags did announce that they are remodeling the water park which sounds exciting, but I’m also worried that they might make the water park separate from the rest of the park. Over all this is my childhood theme park and I hope it lasts a long time and keeps getting improved!

35 years ago it WAS really big. In 1989 Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point opened as the first ever 200 ft hyper-coaster. Nowadays the contest is to see who can make a coaster that is bigger, taller, faster, loopier, etc, and the new breed of coasters now dwarf the previously large Arrow coasters of the 80s. Even the Ride of Steel's first hill is 208 feet tall.

I first visited this park when it was originally Six Flags, and I had a great time, other than being stuck on the lift of Superman for about 20 minutes. My family had season passes throughout my time in middle school. I maybe went back a time or two in high school, then started working there during college.
Honestly, the park has improved so much. I miss The Ranger and UFO, but I realize that maintenance costs were too high for those. I love what they did with Rowdy's Ridge, it used to just be Scrambler and the kiddie coaster, but now Scrambler is in another part of the park and Rowdy's is great (I spent 4 years working in that area, I love it, even if guests get annoyed about height requirements). Overall, I love this park, it will always hold a special place in my heart, but I know that it definitely could be better.
If you're planning a trip here, there is a resort off the park (both hotel and campgrounds), but if you're looking for a cheaper option, there is a campground on the other side of Darien and there's a hotel on the other side of Corfu. There are hotels in Batavia too, but it's a bit further of a drive.

Where there is an actual lake. Darien Lake started as a swimming hole. (The pond over by predator) Putting all that aside, your review nailed it! Its not the best... It needs work, but they are getting there! Glad you had a good time! There is nothing like a Darien Lake sunset and ending the day with ignite the night! The laser show is a tradition! Had been to this park several times before and after six flags bought it the first time and before many of the coasters that six flags have put in. Will say that they could do more to do some touches over the years to upgrade the sidewalks/pathways and do more to add in for trees/shade/plants/flowers. Things use to run faster back in the day for getting on rides and ride lines back in the day which has majorly slowed down over the years. Overall will say that the park is a nice set up.

I used to work there, and have been a guest for most my life, I have to say most of what u say is very true about the park, most of the rides could use a paint job, maybe some more gardens, something to make it look better, one thing I really hope for is that the Ferris wheel gets some lights on it soon.
The prices are a little high for most the people in the area, maybe six flags could lower them a bit.
Other than the rides and attractions, I have to say the employees of the park are what makes the experience the best.

Oh well, here come the Predator RMC comments...
Predator, in all honesty, doesnt look that bad. I think if they retrack it they have a really solid woodie. Every park needs a woodie in my opinion, especially in America, the country of wooden coasters.
Also, due to the RMC craze we are running out of older woodies. I would much rather have a Raptor there then a RMC Hybrid.

I remember Darien Lake when it was a skateboard park. Consider it a "locals" park. The Viper is 40 years old....it was one of the first steel tubular coaster and built in 1982. The Viper is rough because the center line for twists and rolls is based on the car....not the riders head like they are today. Darien Lake was the "party spot" that had a roller coaster. Bringing your own food to cook and things to drink was the thing. Think of it like a tailgate party next to a roller coaster. Go Bills!

It was a privately owned park, then six flags, then privately owned, and now six flags again. They need another full season to retheme the park back. The water park is fun even though it is pretty compact. It is a midrange park that will get better with the corporate money. I would say that in the next 5 years you will probably see some upgrades and some aesthetic touch ups. Fright fest is nicely done. They have some nice scare zones. Get your membership and enjoy

There is definitely the potential for Darien Lake to become one of the top-tier Six Flags parks - all the pieces are there to make it work, we just need to have Six Flags invest the time and money to refurbish some things and smooth over the rough edges of the park operations. Maybe also RMC that Predator - that would make a big splash for sure! :)

Now that you've ridden both of the Ride of Steel clones, it would be cool to see a review of the one in Darien Lake, or a comparison of the two based on your opinion of the rides. Darien is my "home" park (I live 3 hrs away) so I've grown up riding RoS. Let me tell you that with a full train, mid afternoon and no wind, that ride can give some of the best airtime anywhere, in any row you choose, especially on the last three airtime hills (though in the back row, the last hill isn't as good since the brake run is literally right after it, so you can feel the train slowing down when you're at the top of the hill). There's also something so satisfying about sitting in the front row, speeding on straight track over the water. You can really appreciate it since you're not being tossed around like Skyrush for example (though Skyrush is a much better ride overall, even with the wonky restraints).

I agree with this. RMCs are amazing but i would much rather see them make more ground up hybrids like Zadra then convert classic alright woodies. Rides like Bandit (i know everyone hates it but i liked Bandit, enjoyable ride), Roar, Boss (why would anyone want a good CCI RMCed?) and Grizzly. Woodies that arent like amazing but still enjoyable rides if you dont mind the roughness.

I love the coasters, except for, aHeM.. Mind Eraser.. and Boomerang isn’t too bad. I personally hate Predator with a passion, but the last time I went and rode it was without the re-track. But it was terrible last time I rode it. I would love it to get an RMC. It was the only ride that made me want to hurl. Ride of Steel is truly great, and unpopular opinion, I liked it better than Six Flags New England’s Superman. New England’s had a rattle, and so did Darien Lake’s, but New England’s was so much more noticeable. Also, Darien Lake’s has WAAYYYY better restraints.
