If you notice, all these guys start by saying they’re originally from the South. If anyone’s interested in what’s called “The Great Migration”, try reading The Warmth Of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. Great book that tells the story of multiple people and how they originally ventured west and north from the south.
Another book I’d recommend to learn more about how American cities became so damn segregated, try out The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein. Very very eye opening book that anyone that lives in any city or town can relate to.

So, I'm a white man from England, but in 1986 as an 18yr old kid, ended up on my own in LA and lived in Venice. apt 6, 14 Westminster Ave to be precise. I was there for two years, nearly died a few times times, got a serious crack habit in '88 and had to leave California in a hurry. You know something, now 53 years old and clean/sober for over 15 years, I often think of some of those old fellas who used to sit out on the corner of Westminster and the Boardwalk, smoking primos and strumming a guitar. Soulful MF's they were and probably saved my life on a couple of occasions, they knew this fucked up white kid from England was way outta his depth, doing what I was doing, but some of those VSLC took care of me a few times, told me to sort my shit out and go home before i got killed. The Boardwalk at 2am was a scary place back then, but I was using so If i couldn't score in Ghost town, (which actually rarely happened) I'd wait out on the 'boardwalk for a rock. They called me the Crazy Limey.....they were probably right. I gotta say it, the V13 treated me the same way too. They all told me to get clean...finally managed it in 2006, sadly I had 18 years of heroin addiction to get through first..

Before the pandemic, I would go up to Venice and play hoop and smoke pot with some of the VSLC on the bleachers. I definitely sensed more of a family environment between the core members, they would lace me on the area as well and the Revolutionary backgrounds and beginnings of Venice. Interested me so much, I did my own research of Abbott Kinney, he definitely was a head of his time. Great Job Kev Mac and thanks for the history lesson!

Very interesting dynamics & Hood. Their neighborhood has always been intriguing.... We used to hit Venice beach during the summer in the 90’s & they were turned up. Never knew where their hood was but they would be patrolling those back streets. They caught us in a 1986 cutlass supreme, fivedeep and banged on us.... Told um we were from Long Beach & they said “F*** Insane!” We said weren’t from Insane. 😂
They let us go. Don’t know what that beef was about but we were not on that level of their Savagery 😂😂
    Savage!
