No one else has mentioned it so I will. This song is about a homeless veteran Eddie had befriended outside the studio where they were recording. He would get lunch and eat with him and the man would tell him his stories. When they went on tour and came home Eddie couldn't find the guy. He then fund out (I think from one of the locals) that he'd frozen to death. At the end Eddie says "I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead."
Pearl Jam is about to release a new album and single and a tour. Highly recommend seeing them live. They shine and the experience is one you'll want again and again. Different setlists every night. They are so interactive with the fans..its a really special connection between the fans and the band. Ed is one of a kind amazing
Thank you. I love Pearl Jam. There is so much. better man, Given to Fly, Off He goes, Yellow Leadbetter, Daughter, Wish list, Comfortably Numb, Jeremy, and so much more. Thanks again!
They were not my favorite grunge band but when anyone asks what the grunge movement was like I link them to this video. It's everything in one experience. I've watched it hundreds of times over the year and appreciate their music so much more now. Great reaction. You catch the little nuances.
I think Grunge was a movement…like Nirvana was also a pioneer around the exact same time. I love Pearl Jam. I’m a 55 year old mother of three sons. I’m still a fan.
Eddie definitely has a unique voice. Other musicians recognized it almost immediately. He performed "Masters of War"at Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert in 1992 when Pearl Jam was just starting out. He inducted the Doors into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, singing Jim Morrison's (who had died over 20 years before) vocals. He joined the Ramones at their last show in 1996. Pearl Jam performed at The Who VH1 Honors concert in 2008, with Eddie holding his own for Roger Daltrey's vocals (his scream at the end is worth the listen). Last year he performed at the Kennedy Center Honors for U2. And on and on... Mike McCready is the lead guitarist and he is amazing. And we are waiting for their newest album to drop any day now.
I think the band Mudhoney is the epitome of grunge... all the other big seattle area bands at the time were grunge-ish, but also had other major genre influences. PJ- grunge, punk, blues/classic rock, SG- grunge/hard rock, AIC- grunge/metal, Nirvana- Grunge/Punk. Really, I just think of Grunge as the Seattle music scene in the late 80s early 90s, and they each played their own style of music.
This song came out in 1991 - 33 years ago during the early 90s Seattle Grunge revolution! It was on the Album Ten, which was hugely influential on 90s rock. So many singers copied Eddie's style - Scott Weiland from STP, Candlebox, Creed, Collective Soul, etc. You were asking about Grunge - the big 4 of Grunge all are Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, but there are other excellent grunge bands as well like Mudhoney and Screaming Trees as well. All of these bands came out of Seattle, which was the center of the rock world in the 90s.
It's hard to put a finger on "grunge" sonically. Early Pearl Jam was very "classic rock", Soundgarden and Alice in Chains "heavy metal", and Nirvana "punk". The only things that really tied them together was geography (all from Seattle) and their songs usually dealt with serious topics. Drug abuse, depression/mental illness, and social issues were all common themes. This song, for example, was inspired by a homeless Vietnam veteran Eddie had befriended while they were working on their first album.
Eddie and Chris Cornell imo are the 2 greatest male vocalists of my generation(I'm 42) You need to listen to temple of the dog. It's both of them together
Oceans- unplugged...and after that Porch-unplugged. 4 totally different songs! Eddie's voice is very varied! There's so much more for you to dive in. Your just at the beginning.. Looking forward to your next reaction to Pearl Jam! 🫶🏼
Great analysis. You need to check out Chris Cornell from Soundgarden, another mind blowing vocalist. Same era and right there with PJ in the grunge movement.
Grunge is more to do with the music than the vocals, although a distinctive vocal sound did come from the movement. Pearl Jam is one of the original grunge bands along with Soundgarden, Nirvana and Mudhoney.
Grunge top 5 Alice in Chains Pearl Jam Stone Temple Pilots Sound Garden Silver Chairs However sound Garden Chris played with Eddie of Pearl Jam in temple of the dog I'm going hungry
Grunge was a time period and place, Seattle band music from the 90's, not a kind of music. Pearl Jam is just a class rock band that makes classic rock, they'll tell you so themselves, they were however one of the big two grunge bands. Grunge was the death of over produced hair metal music and the birth of real music you could hear instruments in because it wasn't just a wash of studio sound.
No one else has mentioned it so I will.

I saw them live. So amazing.

Mccready is so great at guitar. He plays this solo behind his head during live shows now.
His lyrics are amazing. Eddie really sings powerful lines. So many have double meanings.
They were not my favorite grunge band but when anyone asks what the grunge movement was like I link them to this video. It's everything in one experience. I've watched it hundreds of times over the year and appreciate their music so much more now. Great reaction. You catch the little nuances.
That guitarist is Mike McCready and he is a legend
This is my favorite song and music video in the whole world!
Jeremy the video is let's say unforgettable
Eddie Vedder is considered one of the best rock'n roll voices! He still has this powerful voice. I saw them alive a time ago and he sounds ageless.

Papa Het does it and does it well.

I love how you said “it’s almost surgical.” It’s so true. I never thought about how purposeful and unique that was. Great interpretation.

I miss the 90s

The guitar licks are very reminicent of the late 60's psychadelic rock (my music).
What about "Garden"? Studio version... guess you will like it! 🫶🏼
