I would love to hear your take on Black from them from the same set. Black is such an emotional song and it almost makes me weep when Eddie sings it. I would also love to hear your take on Nirvana from their MTV Unplug
I cry listening to the album version of Black, but the live one is..... Well, I don’t listen to it unless I’m in the mood to cry. Actually, I feel that way about Pearl Jam entirely sometimes. It’s not happy music for me, it’s music for when I don’t feel good. And even though it’s intense let emotional and I cry sometimes, I always feel better afterward. For plain angst though, I go for the first three Silverchair albums.
Sam, your instincts are correct. He was blowing his voice out and hiding it really well. They were heavy drinkers and chain smokers back in the day. Being young he could get away with it But I saw Pearl Jam in 2015 and he was drinking red wine from the bottle during the set. It was amazing but when he had to hit a high note you could tell he was struggling... That's why later in his career he relied on that nice even baritone he's got
@ robertmanley4828. Not necessarilly relevant. Did he and PJ have back to back concerts, had they played just the night befoe in front of 60-70 thousand fans and he had a 24 hour or less turn around to rest his voice? Where was this concert in the whole long concert tour, was it in the middle or end? You don't say anything about that. Not saying you're necessarilly wrong but your opinion means almost nothing without the back story context as in what number in the concert circuit was this that you attended and did they havea a show 24 hours or less the previous night.? Now to be fair a lot of actually great singers do blow their voiceout some after a long career.Eddie maybe when you saw him 15-17 years into his career, Chris Cornell in his later years wouldn't evenattempt the high notes he hit in the 90s on "Say hello to heaven",John Fogerty kinda lost his ability to hit those notes from his late 60 and early 70s career.Bur nuance, ya don't tell us anything about the things mentioned.
And Daniel Johns from Silverchair. They got big when they were only 13 (that’s when they first recorded Tomorrow), so I think what they did was really impressive (even if they missed the peak of grunge by a couple of years- Tomorrow is pure grunge). Everything up to their third album was really good, but the sound changed significantly after that, and to something I’m personally not a fan of. Not bad, just not my thing.
I really appreciate that, even with all your technical knowledge and training, you still understand and acknowledge the importance of soul and creative choice in singing.
I love seeing you fan out on PJ. Eddie's voice is like butter to my ears. I base a lot of my vocal styling off of him because I have a very low voice (for a chickadee) and he is so much fun to sing. Btw, I feel you on words are hard... they really really are.... lol
dude - been watching your videos for a while now and this one was just so terrific - 1. excellent analysis of Vedder's tone and style 2. The Jordan Peel as Duke Ellington vocal discovery was hysterical AND helpful in trying to find that kind of vocal grit 3. THEN you close it out with a funny and endearing awkward moment of telling viewers to "tell you how they fall asleep?" only to then reference Anthony Fantano... Awesome. Truly Awesome episode. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for doing rock singers!!! To me, they have some of the most elusive skill sets, so it's helpful to hear a pro voice teacher describing this stuff.
I wholeheartedly agree with your argument about the eyes! I don't know anything about music theory, but I know I want to feel what the singer's feeling through their eyes.
Couldn't agree more, eyes open BUT I sing (not well lol)and I don't like feeling vulnerable so I do 50/50 but I love watching singers with their eyes open
I am a classically trained vocalist and I feel so weird if I close my eyes. Being classically taught, you are encouraged to always practice in front of a mirror to watch your vowels, breathing and such. I even get dizzy and forget my words with my eyes closed lol
so, i went for a video on his range and it lists a lot of notes on the 6th octave. i can agree that he goes that high, but it seems more like a byproduct of the screaming than a note he planned to hit. i don't know for sure, though.
His highest notes are around D5 and Eb5 (not counting falsetto). On the song Dissident, right towards the end, the part “escape is never ... the SAFEest place” - that’s basically his highest note that isn’t a scream or falsetto. Its a D5. It’s at 3:17 in this video: ruclips.net/video/4cpJ982JGOo/видео.html A D5 for a baritone is insanely high though. Especially considering the fact that he never really uses a mix/head voice, the way someone like Axl Rose would. Btw, pretty much no popular male singer can hit an A6. Except for Prince. Most male singers can’t go past like B5.
I forgot how much I love Pearl Jam. This by far has been one of my favorite videos from you! I love how you cover pretty much any type of music on your channel. I'm going to go listen to some Pearl Jam now! (Weird side note, when I was younger, I went to bed listening to the oldies station on the radio)
30 year career, yes, but his voice is vastly different and has gone through many changes over the years. He absolutely shredded his vocal chords early on, and had to adapt to not being able to sing the way he used to. Despite a weaker, more warbly voice these days, he arguably has more control and knows his limitations.
Dale Dunlop When he asks if Eddie sings and high notes, I immediately thought of "Oceans." Pearl Jam's 'Ten' is one of the greatest albums of all time.
lol i was smiling through the whole video youre finally reacting to one of my favourite bands also eddie does sing higher notes (b and above) and they sound kinda strained and he used to blow out his voice and cancel gigs in 92 (like he knew he's not going to be able to sing the next day and thats why he "gave it all" in the moment so you cant get angry at him lol) i still like it tho, nowadays he does less and less of those high notes but i dont care he has other strengths and we the fans can just help him sing soo
I love how you cover such a large range of genres in your videos!!! Like only you could go from looking into Mariah Carey's Christmas concert performances to an acoustic Eddie Vedder show!!! 💜 💜 💜

Hey Sam, I'd love to see you do something on Mike Patton! He always does those crazy distorted vocals and whistle screams yet still sounds phenomenal to this day. I'd be really interested to see if you can tell the techniques he uses as know one seems to have any knowledge on it. :)
@@nikolateslaize He doesn't seem to pin/like any comments that have to do with reacting in general. He's been doing this for a long time so I don't blame him, it's probably annoying. Just have to say, you’re understanding of articulation is awesome! I’m a linguist with a focus on phonetics and phonology. Really cool hearing these techniques used for singing lessons. Maybe it’s common, but you’re the first person I’ve come across that’s well versed in linguistic knowledge
I remember watching this on MTV when it first aired. I'd never watched Pearl Jam perform and was only familiar with their music through what the local radio djs played. I remember thinking how crazy it was to watch Eddie's face when he sung because it was SUCH a contrast to what my ears heard. It *sounds* like there's a ton of pressure and tension, which normally you'd see in the face, but Eddie's face was so relaxed at exactly those spots when you think you should be seeing tension. It made his performance persona seem as unhinged and on the edge of losing sanity as the subjects of the songs were. And that, of course, just made them that much cooler.
Pearl Jam is and was always something that stands alone. I listened to progressive music in high school and when Nirvana hit the scene, it was taken over with “alternative rock”. But Pearl Jam makes statements on record, on stage and in life in a way that uses their platform in an awesome way. A way that feeds the soul of a rocker. And I think that’s how he has sustained a career like this. My favorite author has a book series called “Rock Chick” and her female characters always say, “I can’t die! I haven’t seen Pearl Jam live yet!” Lol. Says it all! ❤️
Great review! To the extent that Eddie blew his voice out it was on songs like Blood, not Even Flow. Pearl Jam is my favorite band, Eddie my favorite singer and I think he is more conscious now of how he’s singing. I think back in the day the point was to get that tension and express as much as he could with it, I don’t know if he had longevity in mind. Again, listen to Blood. There are ways that his voice has changed over 30 years and certain sounds he can’t produce as consistently anymore, but as any fan will tell you, he still sounds great because in my opinion his voice has a warm, calming quality to it even when he’s not trying to sing anything crazy. As an example, my favorite song of theirs is Nothing As It Seems. Maybe you’ll like it.
Finally!! Haven't even watched the video yet!! Been waiting on you to do Eddie forever!! Thank you! You should do a comparison of all these old "rocker dudes" then and now. 🤘🏻🤠
He’s been going 30 years tour upon tour and he’s kept it up like the first years of his career. Take a listen to “just breathe” and do a video to analyze how amazingly different he uses his voice in that song. His control of his instrument is just so amazing in so many different directions. Best singer of hard rock yet best singer of slow heartfelt songs. More than anything Eddie always goes for it. Authentic, vulnerable, and passionate.
I would love it if you analyzed something recent of Eddie's so you could address how his voice has changed. But thanks for this. I have been a Pearl Jam fan pretty much since the beginning, and I am glad you like Eddie too!
As much as I loved the messages in Nirvana (and still do, hello, In Bloom!), Pearl Jam has always been my favourite grunge band. I live other bands too, like Alice in Chains, but there’s something in Eddie’s voice that pulls at me. And I find songs like Black to move me so deeply, and they have this extra “musicality”, I guess. Where you can pull apart each of the instruments and hear the talent of each person in the band individually, and it still put together, is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s really difficult to describe how I feel about Pearl Jam. I will say though, that from last I heard, Eddie’s voice still sounds just as good a sit did 30 years ago, so I really don’t think he’s doing anything that injures his vocal chords. And he’s just a legend. Many have tried to recreate that sort of sound (like Scott whatsisface from Creed, who sounds atrocious), but no one has ever managed to accurately reproduce that kind of magic. It’s his and his alone. Speaking of magic, anyone know if Sam has done Chris Stapleton Sometimes I Cry live at Bing lounge? Because I can’t find it if he has, and that’s probably my second favourite male voice (though obviously very different genres!)
I should add that I don’t think Eddie sounds exactly the same as he did 30 years ago, but I do think he still sounds as good. Slightly different, but still very good.
Whoooooa, I was JUST thinking the other day, "What would Sam say about his vowel shapes?" Get outta my head. Side note, gawd, he was dreamy back in the day.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of vocal coaches/reactors who can provide clear, analytical commentary while still totally losing themselves in the joy and creativity of the music. Thanks so much , Sam! Also I really love how you respect each artists uniqueness :-) Love your videos
Watching amazing singers perform is such a gift. Watching Sam talk about the performances is the gift that keeps on giving 🎁 Eddie may be my favorite vocalist of all time ♥️
Can’t tell you how happy I am that you reacted to this! Pleeeease also check out Black and Jeremy from the same unplugged set, both also epic performances!
Love this! I would love to see you analyze more or this set, Eddie has such a unique voice. Maybe some of Nirvana's MTVs unplugged too? Love your videos 💜
I think this album, 'Ten'. may be the greatest album in any genre ever. The thing was pretty much perfect. I'm into different things now, but though I love them, I don't think any of them achieve the same thorough level of excellence and engagement. BTS is really strong, though.
Sam, this entire acoustic album is a masterpiece. Eddie is still amazing on live performances. In that acoustic, songs like Black, Jeremy, Alive and Porch are worthy of reaction. In a recent performance they did Love reign o'er me which , originally by The Who, and that rendition was stunning. Greets from Brazil, and congratulation for the amazing job.
I love your passion when you speak about singing and music in general, learning a lot from your videos and your energy is infectious! Love Eddie Vedder! 🥰
In the song "Dissident" by Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder Goes pretty high, especially on that last chorus. At the last "The safest plan!" He goes up to a slightly flat d5 and that's after singing as high as a b5 for a whole song. You should check it out! He's incredible!
I think he still is. I never knew until recently that after this performance and that famous jacket, they introduced Ricky Martin, as carbon copy on an American soap. Hilarious. Just Google the picture and articles.
Oh man, I was so excited to see you react to this. I spent a good third of my life obsessed with Pearl Jam. I'm not as big a fan anymore, but I still love Eddie, his voice, and all their old stuff.
Hey Sam, I can tell by the joy on your face when watching you are truly passionate about music. As a musician myself your positivity inspires me to strive to be better. Thanks for the great content. Keep it up.
Sam, bravo on a most brilliant and interesting analysis of Eddie's epic grunge style vocals. He is unique. I also love Jeff Buckley's unique style and sound too. Great vid as always 😊
Pearl Jam is the best band ever, along with The Doors, any chance you’ll be reviewing Jim Morrison? Any way you have a fan in Colombia 🇨🇴! Happy new year 🎊🎆
Since I found your channel ages ago I waited for you analysing Eddie... And now you did and seeing you so happy about it and Fan boy - ing just was so much better than anything I anticipated haha, thanks so much 💞 It's SO NICE to see other people love the music I love so much!
I think the highest I have heard Eddy sing is on their cover of Love Reign O'er Me by the who. Also I think he strains his voice quite a bit on the song blood from the Vs. album.
“He’s got this beautiful instrument, and he’s capable of producing so many different colours, including really raspy, gritty sounds, and beautiful, angelic little... mmmm yummy things and I... we just saw him go between all of them...” Oh, I feel you, Sam. Iconic band, iconic concert, iconic voice. Love love love your enthusiasm, and words sometimes are extraneous to that. Also, your mic technique notes are required.
There are so many vocal coaches on RUclips but so few are made to do this job.It is a joy watching Sam reacting and explaining from very objective point of view and not trying to seem a " know them all" guy.If you will make searches on youtube you will see vocal coaches saying that they don't know nothing about some muisc geners but still judge the song from a very subjective perspective without the tools to do that affecting the perspective of some learner's.
I've never heard anyone refer to Eddie's vocal abilities as 'beautiful, angelic....yummy things' and it's the most correct thing ever said about him 😁❤👍

Sam you should really react to Fleetwood Mac playing Rhiannon in '76 at The Old Grey Whistle!! One of my favourite vocal performances by Stevie Nicks
Sam did a video for "Sometimes I Cry" this year. God, I LOVE that song, his voice...just perfection!
Seriously one of my favorite bands!!! I freaking love Eddie Vedder!! His voice is just amazing
Watching Sam talk about the performances is the gift that keeps on giving 🎁
Eddie may be my favorite vocalist of all time ♥️
So fun 🙌 Keepin’ it ‘90s, might I suggest Dolores O’Riordan/Cranberries, perhaps Zombie on MTV Unplugged 1995 🥰
Katelyn Larese yes! Great suggestion. Dolores was an amazing singer. Zombie is such a classic
Oooh yes
Can’t tell you how happy I am that you reacted to this! Pleeeease also check out Black and Jeremy from the same unplugged set, both also epic performances!
Love this! I would love to see you analyze more or this set, Eddie has such a unique voice. Maybe some of Nirvana's MTVs unplugged too? Love your videos 💜
You NEED to do their live unplugged performance of Black. Vedder’s greatest, strongest, most emotional performance in my opinion.
Eddie Vedder is my favorite singing lawn mower and I’m so glad Sam agrees!!!
Your videos are entertainment, education, and free-voice lessons all in one!
Eddie Vedder my ultimate all time love. Thanks for the upload ♡
I think this album, 'Ten'. may be the greatest album in any genre ever. The thing was pretty much perfect. I'm into different things now, but though I love them, I don't think any of them achieve the same thorough level of excellence and engagement.
BTS is really strong, though.
Pearl Jam's 'Ten' is the Best album I've ever heard, ever!
Nevermind by Nirvana is the same,
Lancelot Price Don’t forget about ‘Dirt’ by Alice in Chains!
@@imatoaster7831 I was never a fan of them. Sorry about that.
Lancelot Price oh Well, opinions are opinions after all
Sam, this entire acoustic album is a masterpiece. Eddie is still amazing on live performances. In that acoustic, songs like Black, Jeremy, Alive and Porch are worthy of reaction. In a recent performance they did Love reign o'er me which
, originally by The Who, and that rendition was stunning. Greets from Brazil, and congratulation for the amazing job.
Side note - the drums on this are frickin insane.
I love your passion when you speak about singing and music in general, learning a lot from your videos and your energy is infectious! Love Eddie Vedder! 🥰
"Hi. This is Samthony Johntano, the internet's musicalist nerd." Love the vids!
In the song "Dissident" by Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder Goes pretty high, especially on that last chorus. At the last "The safest plan!" He goes up to a slightly flat d5 and that's after singing as high as a b5 for a whole song. You should check it out! He's incredible!
Eddie was so gorgeous back in the day. The music vid of Jeremy .....*sigh.....
Mood. For sure. So pretty.
I always watch those MTV videos because I can appreciate how beautiful Eddie was, first time I saw him I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen
I think he still is. I never knew until recently that after this performance and that famous jacket, they introduced Ricky Martin, as carbon copy on an American soap. Hilarious. Just Google the picture and articles.
He's aged pretty well too, I think. He's still pretty handsome
@@sim0an Absolutely. I saw Pearl Jam for the first time live 1 1/2 ago. He was great.
Oh man, I was so excited to see you react to this. I spent a good third of my life obsessed with Pearl Jam. I'm not as big a fan anymore, but I still love Eddie, his voice, and all their old stuff.
His work on the Into the Wild soundtrack keeps me going everyday.
Ah, classic Pearl Jam. My heart. Thank you for this one, and thanks to whomever suggested it.
I'm dreaming of the day you'll analyze old jazz singers like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. I would love to hear voice theory about their singing.
I would love an Ella one
I always felt the lead singer of Pearl Jam had a unique voice! Have a wonderful day Sam!! You need to do a video of you singing please 😬😬😬👌🏼
He's already reacted to an old performance of his in some high school play that he did.
Rosannasfriend saweeet!!! I’ll look
Currently watching this video in my Pearl Jam t-shirt. ;)
Hey Sam, I can tell by the joy on your face when watching you are truly passionate about music. As a musician myself your positivity inspires me to strive to be better. Thanks for the great content. Keep it up.
Am *lucky* to have gotten that MTV Unplugged Vinyl. I got to Record Store Day II this year.
Sam, bravo on a most brilliant and interesting analysis of Eddie's epic grunge style vocals. He is unique. I also love Jeff Buckley's unique style and sound too. Great vid as always 😊
Want to be really depressed and oddly turned on at the same time? Listen to "Black".
Damn, man. That was a great review! Subscribed.
Pearl Jam is the best band ever, along with The Doors, any chance you’ll be reviewing Jim Morrison? Any way you have a fan in Colombia 🇨🇴! Happy new year 🎊🎆
Oh thank you so much for this reaction, I love Eddie's voice so much!
Your smile alwasy cheers me up, you clearly love what you are doing!
And I love pearl jam, perfect combo!
Brings me back to childhood. Always wondered how he made some of those sounds.
Recovered feminist who love rock...wow.There is hope...
Jon Faerman ???
Jon Faerman
Go away INCEL
His performance on state of love and trust always blew me away also
I've seen Pearl Jam in concert three times, once right up front. I can confirm the intensity.
Sam has a very john Malkovich cadence how he speaks
when he turned he actually said "yeah yeah, dont forget the back" then turned to the people in the back of the stage. its a 360 stage. :)
Hahaha I love that. Totally missed it.
Since I found your channel ages ago I waited for you analysing Eddie... And now you did and seeing you so happy about it and Fan boy - ing just was so much better than anything I anticipated haha, thanks so much 💞
It's SO NICE to see other people love the music I love so much!
HELL YEAH!!!! love me some PJ
“State of love and trust” is immense in that show as well 😮
