  • Visit New Mexico's Coronado Historic Site near Albuquerque
The Coronado Historic Site near Albuquerque is one of New Mexico's recognized historic sites. This is one of the many recommended things to do in Albuquerque. Not only is this site very interesting from a historical perspective, it offers incredible views of the Sandia mountains and amazing birdwatching opportunities.
This Coronado Historic Site contains the ruins of the Kuaua Pueblo. It is estimated this area was first settled around AD 1325 and was occupied by approximately 1,200 people when Coronado arrived. Conflict with Coronado and later Spanish explorers led to the abandonment of this site within a century of first contact.
In the 1930's archeologists from the museum of New Mexico came to this area to excavate looking for evidence of Coronado, and discovered the square kiva and up to 1200 rooms in this community.
The kiva contained many layers of mural paintings. These murals represent some of the finest examples of Pre-Columbian art ever found in the United States. A scientist in the area was able to preserve the layers of art found on the walls in the kiva, and fourteen examples of the orginal art are on display in the Visitor's Center. The visitors center contains prehistoric and historic Puebloan and Spanish Colonial artifacts on exhibit with several hands-on components.
Behind the visitors center are incredible views of the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande River. We were lucky enough to spot a Bald Eagle in the distance during our visit. The center has birdfeeders in the area and several gazebos to sit back and enjoy the expansive views.

Such incredible...and in so many ways, sad history...it's striking in its beautiful starkness. And it speaks to how in so many ways, we need to do better. Just amazing how it's been preserved.

That was an amazing Pueblo find with the kiva and the huge expanse of rooms found there. Coronado will probably always be the name, but you are right that it would make more sense for the focus of the name to be about the Pueblo Natives. You shared such great information.

I love historic sites like this. It is great that they found those ruins. It is an interesting look at the lives of the Kuaua Pueblo Indians. I would love to see the murals in that room. Hopefully we can make it out that way someday. Thanks for sharing this history with us!

Thanks! Great video. They should rename it; in spite of several visits (all the way from the Netherlands, Europe) to the area, I never went there, supposing it was about the man Coronado.

Recent scholarship of Coronado documents shows they were looking for a passage to Asia across the Pacific. The people who lived at Kuaua were Tiwa people.

Sadly when it comes to old native ruins, it seems they are often named something entirely inaccurate (or sometimes even insulting). Some even still using the name given by enemies. A shame. Loved this video though and the history/b-roll bit in the beginning! 😄

It is sad. It just makes more sense to the viewer if they know the background and I’m enjoying the learning process!
