As a 57 year old kid, my Mark 1 eyeballs aren't what they used to be. I can't focus on the front sight like I used to. I've found that focusing on the target itself has produced good results. This video reinforced what I have experienced.

One of my favorite drills is to, without holding a gun, visually focus on something across the room and then point at it by bringing my hand into my field of view but without breaking focus on the target. It's surprising how precisely you are capable of pointing without having to look at your finger.

I always shoot target focused. I found that one thing that really improved my ability and my speed using not a red dot, but a laser. So I can focus entirely on the target AND see how the gun is moving during my trigger squeeze and when I try to re-acquire the target. The result is I'm able to shoot much more accurately just from muscle memory.

Great explanations as always. Focal "yo-yo" between Target and psych post definitely gets faster and requires less conscious effort with practice. There aren't a lot of things we routinely do that yo yo between an arms-length and 10yd focal point. I saw some comments of people saying that their groups aren't as tight... Even more of a reason to go out and do this drill. I can't recall any self defense encounter where someone claimed that they kept a hard front sight focus. Goes without saying but when there is a threat people's attention and focus will naturally be on the threat

This is very common sense training. I view it the same as instinctive bow shooting. You see your arrow in your peripheral vision as it aligns to your target but your only focus is the target you are shooting. Great video!

After watching this video, I tried target focused with iron sights using my SIRT pistol at home. I was able to acquire the target faster and shoot more accurately. The following day, I tried this technique with live fire with my shadow 2 and had the same results (very good). I've only been shooting for seven years, but I shoot weekly and watch a lot of videos to evaluate different techniques. This technique seems to work for me. I believe it helps that I also shoot several red dot pistols, so I am used to having a target focus when using them. Prior to this, I was always front sight focused per a lot of so-called and some actual experts including the SEAL guy (How to Shoot Like A Navy SEAL). Keep up the good work of these videos.

I just woke up and was starting to write the script for a video-game centered CQB series and this is also a topic I'm covering. Snapping to a perfected stance while being target-focused from a draw or on the move to cover is something I'm sure you'll explain later, but even people playing games struggle with this concept when full body posture isn't even a factor. Great video and explanations. I'll be referencing this for people interested in shooting or airsoft for sure. Great video!

I’ve heard people say “front sight focus” a lot when it comes to shooting with iron sights. I gotta be honest and say, I’ve never really done that. It just seemed like common sense to me to focus on your target. I may have taken the time to line up my rear and front sights when I first started shooting pistols 40+ years ago when I was a young lad of 16. But I didn’t do that long because I found that with just a little practice, I could line them up very quickly and pretty much in my lower peripheral vision upon bringing the pistol up to eye line. I just focused on the target and when I caught my sights in my peripheral vision, I was pretty much on target already and I could start pulling the trigger and make clean, effective shots. I just recently started getting into the dot just because I just wanted to see what it was all about. I’m still faster with irons from the sheer repetition of years of shooting. But I can definitely see the advantage with them with a bit more practice.

Love all the videos on this series. I watched the first what...like 30 and assumed they were done :)
Now there is a ton more...not sure I can watch them all !
I like this one a lot though. I need to stop focusing on my dot reticle and focus on my target. I can see and feel myself doing it when I go to USPSA matches and is likely slowing me down.

When I got into shooting a few years ago, I decided to buy a SIRT pistol before buying the real thing. What I discovered is that seeing the laser on targets started to make me more target-focused, and this was especially true when transitioning between targets. But I started to get very accurate with my target-focused shooting (maybe we can start calling it "TFS"?). I somewhat recently saw Taran Butler recommend SIRTs for the same reason. Just thought I'd share my experiences with using laser training to develop my TFS!

I found that if I don’t think about it, and especially if I’m drawing on a pretend threat (not target shooting), I am naturally target focused with a hazy front sight overlay out to about 7 yards. After 7 yards I find that I naturally become front sight focused overlayed on top of a hazy target. Either way, I am entirely ignoring my rear sights. Seems to work well for me. For longer or more target shooting I will include my rear sight but prefer the lollipop/dot on “i” sights. I despise 3dot sights as they are distracting as I am better/faster at lining up target, front sight, and rear sight all vertically (lollipop style) than I am doing both vertically (target/front sight) and horizontal (rear dots and front dot all lined up and/or top of front and rear sights all in line). I’ve given up shooting “how I’m supposed to” and just shoot what feels natural and comfortable to me and it works for me. Note that I grew up shooting hunting rifles and colt SAA style firearms and not anything with combat sights so maybe that’s why.

Question, while doing this drill and being target focused, I notice my rear sights appear in double vision. I try fixing this issue by focusing on the pistol but then I am no longer looking at the target. Do you have any helpful tips and suggestions for correcting this issue?

    • @SlappMcSlappface

Don't pay attention to your sights, the point is to align the gun intuitively to the target with your grip and presentation of the gun to the target. Keep your eyes focused on the target.

This is a good video the only thing is I don’t understand why he feels the need to repeat himself over and over. Wouldn’t it be best served to make the statement, reinforce the statement and move on. I have found that when you repeat yourself over and over your students loose focus, not trying to be critical just a little food for thought.

Newer shooter. I have one eye open when shooting front sight focus. If I don't, I have double vision. Do you have one eye open switching from front sight post to target?
On another note, I have tried a red dot and did that with both eyes open.

I've never understood the idea of front sight 'focus'. The entirety of my shooting life, my sight has instinctively been on the target regardless of what sighting system I've used. From the age of 5 this is how I've done it. Very odd, this idea of front sight focus. Even trying that so the front sight is perfectly in focus for me, the target doubles. Maybe I'm not understanding this.

This technique works so much better if you are fully extended with both arms, head down behind gun, and using the body from the chest up to align the gun naturally and intuitively towards the target. Your demonstration doesn't do that, and is a lot less useful, especially to new shooters. All the time you spent working eye exercises for stuff that people naturally know how to do, instead of developing the correct posture to make this all much easier.
