As I do not intend to print for profit, ink consumption is less of a priority than ease of use for me. Yes, I'll have made a custom profile, printed a colour test image and probably printed my B&W test image as well. This gives me a feel for how a paper behaves with a particular printer. At very least I'll do an A4 test sheet of a colour test image (I never test with my own images)

    Hi Keith, thanks for the video - it’s very helpful to see your walk through. The lack of availability of the P900 has given rise to concerns/rumours about manufacturing issues - my own concern is that it does appear somewhat flimsy in places ( a byproduct of weight saving design) - you have used a lot of printers - I was wondering if you have any concerns about the P900’ s durability? Thanks again Keith👍🏼

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  4 года назад

      Thanks - it's difficult to be very certain about this, since I get new printers to test. I quite like the fact that I can easily lift it ;-)
      The one here is currently a pre-production one (I'll cover this and durability in the full (written) review when it's done). Whilst I've no official info, I'm minded to believe that with the critical nature of modern supply lines, delays are more likely to be from knock on effects of the pandemic around the world - it doesn't take much to miss a ship sailing and they don't wait for you to get a few extra containers ready...

      The P5000 is made for more regular use than the smaller printers and weighs a LOT more.
      Of course, that's just my preference based on what stuff I do - it won't be relevant for others, it's why I never do comparative reviews or recommendations. If someone recommends a 'best' printer without a lot of supporting info, then they are probably trying to sell you one (I'm a photographer, I don't sell printers ;-) )

    Hey Keith! Love your videos, I have narrowed down my top choices to the P700 and the P900. I will be using the printer to print out my photography photos but also create wedding invitations, save the dates, etc. on cardstock. I really don't see why I shouldn't get the P900 because the bigger ink cartridge won't run out as fast and they are priced so much better than those for the P700. I don't believe I will print many 17" wide photos, but I do admit it would be nice to have that option. When I print a lot of wedding invitations, I will be only printing those on 5x7" cardstock. Is it overkill to get the P900? Which would you recommend in this instance? Thanks!

    Thank you for all your very expert advice, you make things easy to understand. I’ve been considering buying the P900. To tide me over, I purchased a giclee art A4 print online and couldn’t believe how beautiful it looked compared to the same artwork printed on my old epson stylus 1400. Two questions, the giclee print was printed on an Epson SC-P7500 or SC-P9500. Could the quality be as good if printed on the P900? Also would it be considered a giclee print if printed on the P900?

      First up, 'Giclee' is nothing but a marketing term and has no meaning whatsoever, beyond allowing you to put up prices ;-) :-) [Yes 'Giclee' is utter hokum from my POV ;-) ]
      The P900 with good profiles and paper can produce prints on a par with the P7500/9500 - there are a few images where you might get a slightly better performance from the P7500, but to be honest - few people could tell...

    Hi Keith, I have problems with the 900 printing Fotospeed NST Bright White 315 - independend on which paperfeed I use (rear or front) and all sizes (I tried A4 and A3 so far). The prints come out not totally straight. At the bottom the image is shifted 1-2mm more to the right than at the top (always that direction, but different shift). 2 of 5 prints work, 3 not :) And all prints are around 2mm more to the right than I see in the preview in Lightroom.
    Do you think this is a problem with the printer itself, so that I have just to exchange it? I selected FineArt paper on the printer and in Lightroom and I clamped the paper tight at the printer. I don't see any mistake I have made.
    I bought hundrets of sheets of that paper already and don't know what to do now. I were so happy about a tip from you as an printing expert :)
    Thank you so much,
    Christian

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 года назад +1

      There is a skewing setting deep in the setting somewhere, but if it does it on all papers (and software) then that sounds like a printer problem. BTW do not overly tighten the slides against the edge of the paper - it need to be slightly loose
      I'm hearing of paper feed issues more often with the 900 and some people have had to send them back. My first one was damaged in transit, and the second was an engineering sample, so not guaranteed to be identical with a shipping printer. Do check my actual review on the Northlight site for more about the printer - the skew should not happen.
      www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-sc-p900-printer-review/
      BUT... Just one other thing - test a print from the Epson print software and with a different paper.
      I rather dislike lightroom so always suspect it first ;-) However, if the issue is there with the Epson print software then it will stop the Epson people blaming lightroom ;-) ;-)

      @christian.irmler 3 года назад +1

      @@KeithCooper Thank you so much for your quick answer, Keith!
      The 1-2mm skew didn't appear on cheap copy paper, just on the mentioned Fotospeed fineart paper (2 of 5 prints are okay on that paper). Just the 2mm shift happens on all papers. These are 2 different problems, but I think here could be a relation.
      The problem happens independent on software, by the way. I tried already.
      I think I will open a ticket at Epson. Fingers crossed, that they'll find a quick solution, that I can print :)
      By the way: You do an amazing job. Unbelievable how deep you go into detail with your reviews. Keep up your good work ;)

My artwork is what I plan to print and Iv not had a printer for this before so not got anything to compare to. I don't have that many images I'll do all this for - since 2015 for example I've largely shot on a 50MP 5Ds which is much easier to work on, although I can quickly get into working on Photoshop files in .psb format [aka really big] if I start stitching 50MP images...

      Some of this is covered in the actual (written) review - I make profiles at the setting I want to use and this generally works. I'm wary of some optional settings - they can feel more like marketing features to me ;-) My best results (overall tonality) came at the mid settings for photo papers and the lower of the two available for art papers
      Since the p900 and 700 are identical from a print POV, see my much more detailed look at B&W printing in this article
      www.northlight-images.co.uk/black-and-white-printing-with-the-p700/ - just mentally change 700 for 900 in the article... Normally I studiously avoid any consideration of Dmax in my work ;-)

    Hi Keith I've been trying to print a borderless print on a 11x 17 size paper and either the margins are off or I lose a part of the picture. On Epson Layout I chose 11x17 and best I can do is get margins but not borderless. Any suggestions would help. Thanks

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  10 месяцев назад +1

      For borderless to work well, you need an oversize image and also set the expansion - trying to print accurately to the edge often doesn't work.
      Borderless losses part of the image - that's how it works. It's possible to increase the canvas size and other tricks like that in Photoshop, but in general, borderless loses stuff

    Keith, thank you very much for all your work and for sharing your experience with us. I am thinking about buying the p900 and I am curious about one fact. My work I am planning to print is illustrated art (no photography) and its only black and white. I wonder what will happen to the color ink I do not use? Will this have an negative effect on the printer and the head? I first thought not to put the color inks in, but I found out that is not possible, all inks have to be installed. What do you think? Thank you in advance!

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  3 года назад

      The colour inks do actually get used in small amounts in B&W printing and cleaning - this should be enough so that they go down slowly and cause no problems
      My own thought (not tested) is that a couple of coloured images printed on plain paper every 4-6 months would be enough to ensure that there are no ink issues. This might well be the same as printing a nozzle check on plain paper every week or two. A lot depends on how much you use the printer.
      Despite all that, I'd not personally have any concerns about just printing B&W

      At the moment I print my work outside (let print by a company). I have some designs they are completely black with some text on it. Ratio 95 to 5 percent. For a A2 I pay 9 euros. I think doing it on my own will be less than that. No clue how much ink is used for an almost complete A2 black paper.

And if not, I can let the black ones print by the company and the white ones by myself.

    I would love to print at home. My concern is that being a hobbyist photographer...it's likely that I would only print a few images per month at the most. So other than price and the length of time it would take to cover the cost of the printer from saving money over using a lab...but potential issues with a printer that doesn't get used much. Thoughts on this printer in particular and suggestions for someone like me that wants to print at home but won't likely print often?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  2 года назад

      Unfortunately, the larger the printer, the more often they need using.
      For the P700/900 I'd suggest a nozzle check print (plain paper is OK) at least every other week. A few images a month is very low usage so the regular nozzle checks become more important.
      One thing is to get some relatively basic(A4) paper and print more - use the paper to really learn to print. A few prints a month isn't the volume to get the experience in printmaking - there is the tendency to rely on the screen too much and not appreciate just how different screen and print are, and celebrate that difference...
