In this movie, the studio basically told John Woo, "You know what? It's all yours, you have ALL the control" This movie really is an example of why studios should give the directors more creative control. Well, the good directors.

The Max Payne games were influenced by John Woo movies: The Killer, Hard Boiled, Face/Off, etc... He's the 3rd ingredient that made this insane premise work.
To be fair, the supporting characters definitely noticed that Sean Archer & Castor Troy were being weird. But body switching was never a possibility in their minds.
This concept is even more fun for actors when you consider the fact that the two lead characters themselves have to try to act like each other. Hence, acting-ception.

This movie was completely absurd, but it was so much fun that it didn't matter.
The craziest part of this flick(through no fault of the filmmakers) is the scene where Danny Masterson tries to rape Dominique Swain in the car before Travolta intervenes. Given what Masterson is currently on trial for, it's freaky watching that now.

This script was originally set in the future, explaining more easily the crazy technology - like the face changing and the super prison in with magnetic boots. John Woo didn't want to do something out of present day, so they kept all the tech and set it in, at the time, current year. So that's why you're getting all that wild tech in a world where it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. My sister and I saw this opening night. That theatre was jam packed. Had a blast with it. I actually really love the soundtrack for this as well.

So glad! you guys enjoyed this film and reacted to this classic 90s Action Flick! One of the best films from Dir. John Woo.
John Woo is the man who brought style and grace to gunplay long before you witness it in brutally-cool Hollywood action flicks like Reservoir Dogs and more recently The Matrix. "The master of mayhem" is renowned for his talents to choreograph some of the most breath-taking shootouts ever.
    Little trivia.
Nicolas Cage and John Travolta spent two weeks together before filming to learn how to play each other. They decided on specific gestures and vocal cadences for each character that could be mimicked.

I'm so glad you talked about their acting, cos I feel like that gets overlooked a lot. Con Air came out not long before this and going from that to this, with Nick Cage's acting fresh in my mind I was blown away by how well John BECAME Nick. I think not too many people can pull off acting like Nick Cage at his insane best, but John pulled it off. And Nick did an amazing job playing John
And the whole John Woo-ness of this movie is just glorious. It's just a shame that the movie didn't do well, I'm fairly sure that's a big part of why Woo didn't make many more American movies. And that's a real shame.
If you haven't seen Con Air, you need to add that to your list, and as for a Travolta movie in this same vein try Broken Arrow... actually now that I think about it, that's a John Woo movie too... so you really need to add that to your list.

For it's time, it was definitely on par for the movies during this era. Big explosions, somewhat convoluted plots with plot holes lol!! I think one thing I didn't initially catch until much later was towards the end when they are fighting at the funeral Castor dislodges the voice thing in Sean, so Nicolas Cage was sounding like John Travolta and so that line he says to his daughter about hear his voice makes so much sense. This might actually be one of my Top 10 action movies ever because of how brilliantly the main premise of switching faces was executed through the 2 main actors' performances, and how effective the family subplots were. Travolta and Cage really captured each others' mannerisms and speech cadence. Personally, I think that I liked Travolta just a smidge better than Cage in this, but again, both superb performances.

Whenever you have over-the-top jumps, twists, slides, gunplay and explosions mixed with slow-mo, that's John Woo...!!
I'm not familiar with his entire body of work, but his 90s Hollywood blockbusters were dope...!
I'm sure that the Wachowskis were inspired by his brilliance for the action scenes in The Matrix.
Saw this in the cinema as a kid and obviously loved it.
Thanks for another entertaining video, guys. 👍🏻

A dopier movie I couldn't imagine.....and yet the acting feat of Travolta and especially Cage (since Travolta is harder to imitate) is a sight to behold. That's the biggest special effect of the whole movie! I do remember sitting in the theater, wishing the movie itself was better, but it does make a great reaction video!

This movie doesn't get enough attention. And that's not even subjective. I owned a copy on VHS back in the day. The director John Woo dabbled in American films, although I believe he's since abandoned making them entirely after 2003's Paycheck. His credits are mostly associated with foreign productions before and after this. Worth noting the over-the-top-action style shown in Face/Off is a common trait of his work. Hard Boiled in comparison is absolutely nuts, substantially more so than this movie.

Just want to thank you guys for being the first reactors not to be obsessed with the whole cheesy, hand gesture bit that John Travolta's character does throughout the movie. Another film you're sure to love is Equilibrium with Christian Bale and Sean Bean, it's like 1984/Brave New World meets The Matrix.

@@-M0LE I understand what they were going for, but it just comes across as weird, and un-natural. It ends up detracting from the scenes as opposed to adding to them. Might have worked if it was him closing his sons eyes when he died and they were both shot. And then had only been used twice, once in the scene of his son's death and on the wife while retelling the story because only she knows and proves it's him. But the way it's just his little family quirk, and is done so frequently in the movie, it's a joke.
