The shooter that killed Derrek's little brother was the little brother of the kid that Derreck killed. a good subliminal message from the movie to take is that you are a role model in life to people as a peer so you have to be mindful of the way you carry yourself so not to mislead people in a path that's not right for them like how Derreck influenced his brother, and also similarly you have to be careful what you let influence you.
Everyone says this is a movie that everyone should see. I believe it's one that everyone should see at least twice. It is so impactful that it is hard to process it fully the first time
The original film ends after Danny (Edward Furlong) is shot by a black student (whose brother was killed by Derek (Edward Norton) earlier in the film). In Kaye's version, after this we are taken to a scene in the family apartment where the detectives are trying to comfort Danny's grieving mother and sister. The camera then pans away and cuts to a scene in the bathroom. We see the sink filled with hair and an electric razor next to it. Derek is stood there with his head shaved - he stares in the mirror and looks at the swastika on his chest, before pulling out a pistol. The film ends on a shot of Derek's sick smile, the same smile we saw when he was arrested for his murders earlier in the film.' What do you think of this ending? Has Derek reformed enough not to go back to his old ways, or do you think it's more realistic that he goes back to it? I prefer the ending we got.
My good friend Jason is the kid who shot the little brother. One of the biggest tragedy of this film is how drugs ruined the careers & lives of the 2 young stars Ed & my pal Jason #wastedtalent
This is a cool idea, I never thought of actually rewatching some of the movies I've already done alone with my brother but I'm going to keep it in mind; thanks Chobro!
This role changed him as a person. It's like the role taught him why hate against one another who is different can bring a complete loss of humanity and peace among us.
My civics teacher had the class watch American History X in highschool.... She caught some heat for it.... Looking back I realize how cool that makes her.... No kid that saw this film in her class grew up to be a POS
Notice how the movie jumps from the past to the present the past is in black in white to represent how Dereck and the people around him look at the world as black vs white but the present is shot in color distinguishing itself from Dereck's past looks on the world

You're right bro. That's Lil Chris from the movie Friday that knocked over everyone's trash can's,good catch. They caught the little fucker in the end though😂.
The script originally ended with Derek going home and shaving his head again, the idea being that the cycle of anger and hate is endless. Norton rebelled, would not go along with it, and ended up taking control of the film away from Tony Kaye, the writer/director.
Honestly I'd have hated the ending, I feel like this one gets the exact same message across; showing that hate and violence is a never ending cycle. The ending is what truly ties this movie together and makes it so memorable.
@@OctoKrool The argument was essentially between "people learn" (Norton) and "people don't learn" (Kaye). My own opinion is that _individuals_ can learn but our _species_ doesn't. Thus we keep going through this over and over in every culture throughout history. Fear and hate of The Other is endemic to human beings and not some localized phenomenon based on this or that group's history. It's a very rare group that has never had to contend with this shit. We always find some reason to hate others, sadly, whether it's race, religion, appearance, etc. Hell, people have been persecuted and murdered for being _left-handed._ All we can do is try not to be asshats ourselves.
@@OctoKrool I feel like Norton's character had grown too much, he now knew that the way he felt and thought was so wrong that he was disgusted with himself for having been able to fall for it in the first place, it would have been completely out of character and a slap in the face of his growth and development. He no longer holds those opinions, he knows now that even his own race can be violent, judgemental, and ignorant like he had believed minorities to be, and he had made a decision that would prevent him from ever being accepted in that community ever again. In my mind the way it ended is the only way it could end, maybe Derek takes his mom and sister and they move somewhere else to get away, but that's not really relevant to the message and the exact story, so we can just assume something like that happens after the credits.
There are many lessons to be learnt from this movie. But nearly 25 years later, nothing in society has changed. A brilliant movie everyone should see once.
@@paulcurran4786 I've heard that but I've also heard he only has that reputation because he didn't want this movie to end with his character going back to his old ways.

One thing that stood out to me was that the black guy in jail did more time for dropping a tv on a cops foot than the white guy did for killing 3 people. Very indicative of our criminal justice system today.
Yep. The movie further illustrates the reality of white America's blindspot to the criminal justice system as it pertains to black America when Derek finds Lamont's account of his arrest and charges to be too incredulous to be believable.
What should have stood out to you, op, is that while there is definitely unfairness in our criminal justice system, you are overlooking the fact that Derek was only sentenced to three years, because his brother wouldn't testify to what he saw. It says very clearly, that Derek would have gotten life in prison had Danny testified. He was perfectly within his rights to fire at the guy with the gun, that is self defense on his own property.... He went beyond self defense, when he curb stomped the guy, killing him. That is murder. Danny would not testify to it and nobody else saw what happened, so it was derek's word.
Ok I'm gonna say it, I don't believe it's an unfair bias, Im sure it happens here and there, but on the whole and this is when I'm gonna be labelled a bigot, most white defendants try to come across as sorrowful for the crimes they've committed and though probably not genuine a lot of the time attempt to show remorse, a lot of black defendants have a "ride or die" attitude or I'm being victimised attitude, this looks unremorseful and is obviously taken negatively when sentencing, I think a lot of this unfairness mentality is a self fulfilling prophecy.
This is definately a movie that everyone should watch at some point...makes you realize how easy it could be to go down the wrong path, but it also shows you that it's never too late to change for the better...
@@malikwilson7387 tupac in his last movie which is called gang related is underrated asf to me. That movie gives me the conformation that if tupac were still alive then he would be one of the greatest actors of this generation.
Damn good movie. Edward Norton actually helped edit this movie when the Director quit, and the diner at the end is also the same from Big Lebowski. Not justifying what happened at the end, but it wasn't "just staring". I think the other guy saw it as disrespecting, which leads to embarrassment and shame, then being angry about that. Plus Danny was already a known skinhead, brother of the notorious Derick Vinyard. He likely already had a reputation going against him :( That's the ripple effect of hate, once it starts it hard to stop the chain reaction.
That's the sad thing, hatred never ends; it's a never ending circle. I keep hoping for day where this kind of stuff stops, but realistically I don't think there ever will be.
The way he played the role reminds me of the guy from Spike Lee's "Blackkklansman" the way both actors nailed the ignorant part of the character but also had a way of making it comical to a small degree.
The crazy part about the end is,The kid that killed Danny is the little brother of the kid that Derek killed. The kid that he stomped on the curb.Man,if Karma don't always come back around smh.It doesn't matter how long it takes to come back to u and it also doesn't always come back to u directly,it can target someone you're close to as well,it's just a matter of time.Always give out what u want in return.
I didn't even know that, but it shows that this violence is a never ending circle; if it doesn't get you it'll get someone you care about. It's honestly crazy.
I don't think they were brothers 🤔 the guys who Derek killed were the same guys who Derek and his mates beat on the basketball court, so they were gonna nick his car as payback for Derek and his mates winning the basketball match (this was black and white scene so was the past) The lad who killed Danny was the lad who Danny disrespected in the bathroom when he blew smoke in his face so Danny got shot for that ( filmed in colour so it was the present) I think they were trying to show how easily young people are influenced and manipulated by older people around them. Danny was influenced by his father, Derek/Cameron etc, and the young lad who shot Danny by the older people he knew etc. That's my take on it anyway 👍 a great film with fantastic performances by all and a film that stays with you long after the credits roll 🎥
the black guy may have also been lying..thats what is awesome because its vague enough where sure we like him but hes in jail so he could be badder then we know...who knows what he really did...he could be telling the truth but if he was on probation and had multiple strikes before, then hes going to get an extra year or two...what if he did chuck it at the cops..we don't know the tuth...its his word man...do we give criminals the benefit of the doubt cause we like them?..the movie subtly tricks us...its hearsay..maybe he was apart of a bigger ring of thiefs and this is not the only incident hes been in...and they used that to give him more time with evidence...
The number of times you two started laughing during this reaction, and I knew in a few moments you would be shutting the hell up... well there were plenty of them.
Everything hits so hard in this movie, and i learned a lot from a very young age. I've seen it with my parents when i was young, and i'm very thankful for it. I got to say that the dinner scene at the end when the mother says that "she's sorry that he came out of her womb" is still hitting me hard on every re-watch... I love me some Edward Norton. I remember watching this in middle school.
The film ends on a shot of Derek's sick smile, the same smile we saw when he was arrested for his murders earlier in the film.'
What do you think of this ending? Has Derek reformed enough not to go back to his old ways, or do you think it's more realistic that he goes back to it?
I prefer the ending we got.
My good friend Jason is the kid who shot the little brother. One of the biggest tragedy of this film is how drugs ruined the careers & lives of the 2 young stars Ed & my pal Jason #wastedtalent
Just a quick call out, if you guys are doing films Curtis hasn't seen, is there any chance of a Dredd re-watch?
This is a cool idea, I never thought of actually rewatching some of the movies I've already done alone with my brother but I'm going to keep it in mind; thanks Chobro!
LOVE YOUR GUY'S REACTIONS!!
Would adore a sci-fi reaction from y'all! 🚀
Y'all crazy for this one 😲
Those god damn elephants, omg I nearly wet myself, good reaction yet again guys, fantastic 👍
Edward Norton and Edward Furlong= *chefs kiss*
Love your reactions and that you’re brothers I have one full blood brother and we aren’t close like you guys seem. 👍Matt from Australia 🇦🇺
Here are 2 movies you both probably havent seen: "Kids" and "Requiem for a dream"
They posted their reaction to requiem, you should check it out.
@@catewright1575 oh really? Nice. Im just here thanks to the algorythms 🤣🤣
13 is a good one too.
"Has anything you've done made your life better?" There's the line of the movie.
Facts
Powerful and very reflective for self accountability that leaves no wiggle room to rebuttal.
That line and 'hate is baggage' for me.
If you believe that your world should only have white people then then answer would be no and so on does this keep going on.
@@cjhere2224 Can you reword your comment because I know it’s ignorant but I’m just trying to understand which angle of ignorance you’re coming from?!
Edward Norton is an amazing actor given the right material. Primal Fear is another good example of the duality of his characters.
I dont think the qualifier, "given the right material", is needed. He IS an amazing actor.
@@catewright1575 AND he's my secret bf too! It's so secret in fact that he only knows me as "the Defendant". LOL 😂
I think this was the first movie I ever saw him in and he ended up becoming one of my favorite actors.
@@jjc5871 who could blame u??
This role changed him as a person. It's like the role taught him why hate against one another who is different can bring a complete loss of humanity and peace among us.
My face every time I see someone about to watch American History X for the first time: 😬😬😬😬😬
FACTS lol
Damn!! That is a completely accurate emoji!!!
IKR
This is too funny because this was literally the face I made for a second as soon as I came across this lol
I see that emoji I hear teeth on the pavement.
This is one of those rare movies everyone needs to see.
My civics teacher had the class watch American History X in highschool.... She caught some heat for it.... Looking back I realize how cool that makes her.... No kid that saw this film in her class grew up to be a POS
Yeah like Paddington 2 or the pest
@@mrpepperidgefarms Should be shown in EVERY high school in the country!
@@IggyStardust1967 100% agree....
Now more than ever
Yes definitely
Notice how the movie jumps from the past to the present the past is in black in white to represent how Dereck and the people around him look at the world as black vs white but the present is shot in color distinguishing itself from Dereck's past looks on the world
Yup
Hey, we don’t give a damn about how long the vids are. I prefer them long in my personal opinion! This was a good one. Y’all gotta react to Harlem Nights! It will be a nice break after how heavy this movie was.
My friend showed me Harlem Nights I liked it ever since.
I don't hear it mentioned often, but the cinematography in this movie is absolutely phenomenal
IKR should've won way more awards
You guys must watch the movie “Fresh” with Samuel L Jackson is so good.
Yesssssssssss
Seriously underrated film.
Few films about hood chess culture have happened.... It's an amazing film
Yes please watch next
Yesss I asked for this awhile back!
The kid at the end who shot the younger brother in the school restroom is the same kid from Friday kicking over the neighborhood trash cans.
Wow I did not know that 😮🤯
He escalated his criminal life rather dramatically
He didnt knock over nobody's stupid trash cans
You're right bro. That's Lil Chris from the movie Friday that knocked over everyone's trash can's,good catch. They caught the little fucker in the end though😂.
seriously? I never knew that!
The script originally ended with Derek going home and shaving his head again, the idea being that the cycle of anger and hate is endless. Norton rebelled, would not go along with it, and ended up taking control of the film away from Tony Kaye, the writer/director.
That wouldve been crazy
@@Serai3 I wish I could give you more likes for that comment.
Everyone should watch this movie. Ed Norton should have won an academy
There are many lessons to be learnt from this movie. But nearly 25 years later, nothing in society has changed.
A brilliant movie everyone should see once.
Plz do dead presidents with Larenz Tate and Chris tucker and others
YES
Classic
You guys should react to A Time To Kill starring Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock
That one is good but rough to watch 🥺
Time to kill wow 😳
Definitely one to react to
Ed Norton is one of the most underrated actors of all time.
I do not know anyone who underrates Edward Norton. The guy has three academy award nominations.
That is not being underrated.
He's far from underrated, he's apparently a nightmare to work with and maybe that's why he isn't given the 'big roles' any more.
@@paulcurran4786 I've heard that but I've also heard he only has that reputation because he didn't want this movie to end with his character going back to his old ways.
The actor who played Seth is in really good shape now. It's amazing.
I actually realized that a bit after watching the movie, it's inspiring and incredible how hard he worked because he had some serious weight on him!
it's a shame he's a scientologist
@@OctoKrool IDK your version didn't play to the end with Danny's words speaking at the end part of his American History X essay as he lays there dead as an overdub.
@@lavenderllamamusic hmm I mainly know him from My name is Earl, Who stars Jason Lee.. I knew Jason _was_ a scientologist, i didn't know Ethan Suplee was too. He still seems like a cool dude despite his views, which is the important thing.
@@habitsrabbit Glad to hear that Lee got out of that mess. Went looking, seems like Suplee is still a Scientologist, but it's not real clear if he's a practicing Scientologist or if he's just in it because of his wife.
YES!!!!
i mean derek pleaded self defense and would of gotten life if his bro testified
Black guy from the hood here loved this movie its deep open my mind up first time I saw it
This is definately a movie that everyone should watch at some point...makes you realize how easy it could be to go down the wrong path, but it also shows you that it's never too late to change for the better...
Norton should have won the Oscar that year. His performance was incredible.
Agreed!!
you guys are really going for the classics guys!. Love your channel. Do poetic justice next with tupac and janet
that .I hope they do above the rim or gridlock with Tupac next which is underrated
@@malikwilson7387 tupac in his last movie which is called gang related is underrated asf to me. That movie gives me the conformation that if tupac were still alive then he would be one of the greatest actors of this generation.
Above the rim, tales from the hood
People like Seth are very real, and that’s very frightening
Plz do paid in full with wood Harris and Mekhi Payne
Fun Fact: The big guy from this movie is a great guy in real life.He lost over 300 lbs and looks like Thor now 💯
Look it up
Yeah. It's funny bc I saw this after I saw him in My Name is Earl--what a 180 character-wise! 😀
Good news!! Im really happy about him 👌
The way he played the role reminds me of the guy from Spike Lee's "Blackkklansman" the way both actors nailed the ignorant part of the character but also had a way of making it comical to a small degree.
Yeah violence begets violence.
Wow I didn't remember that
Really ? I saw that movie 10 times ! Which scene explain that ??????
I don't think they were brothers 🤔 the guys who Derek killed were the same guys who Derek and his mates beat on the basketball court, so they were gonna nick his car as payback for Derek and his mates winning the basketball match (this was black and white scene so was the past)
The lad who killed Danny was the lad who Danny disrespected in the bathroom when he blew smoke in his face so Danny got shot for that ( filmed in colour so it was the present)
I think they were trying to show how easily young people are influenced and manipulated by older people around them. Danny was influenced by his father, Derek/Cameron etc, and the young lad who shot Danny by the older people he knew etc. That's my take on it anyway 👍 a great film with fantastic performances by all and a film that stays with you long after the credits roll 🎥
Please react to "Poetic Justice" & "Dead Presidents" next.👍🔥
Dead Presidents is an amazing movie! good call
The black guy from prison never knew what Dereck did... the full story. Dereck never said it to him because he would probably loose a friend.
the black guy may have also been lying..thats what is awesome because its vague enough where sure we like him but hes in jail so he could be badder then we know...who knows what he really did...he could be telling the truth but if he was on probation and had multiple strikes before, then hes going to get an extra year or two...what if he did chuck it at the cops..we don't know the tuth...its his word man...do we give criminals the benefit of the doubt cause we like them?..the movie subtly tricks us...its hearsay..maybe he was apart of a bigger ring of thiefs and this is not the only incident hes been in...and they used that to give him more time with evidence...
@@razkable how you just add all these crimes to the black guy. 🤦🏻♂️ Typical
