I watched this movie in school in a class that I guess you can say is like Social Studies. The teacher put this on with 25 14 y/o teenagers and, by the end (we watched in one go: it was a 3 hour class), there was just silence for like 20 minutes. You could only hear heavy breathing and the occasional sobs...from everyone- including the "tough" boys. This is a movie I have never forgotten. And it's been 15 years since I first saw it.

All right I'm gonna be honest about one thing and I'm a brown Native American guy. No disrespect here cause i enjoy your reactions I'm just gonna offer perspective./ When white dudes like yourselves who are not from the streets and never been to prison see a white guy with a tattoo you think white supremacist and I can't blame you but to be honest, if somebody like me or a black dude or an Asian (More Vietnamese Hmong Filipinos and Cambodians than Japanese Chinese or Korean though) or a Samoan were to see this in California we would just assume that guy has done time. same with when white guys have spider web tattoos that's not a nazi thing it's a convict thing. The thing is tattoos inspire fear. In prison you got the Mexican guys wearing Aztec and Mayan warriors as tattos, the black guys will have Mandinka or Zulu warrior tattos, Asians might have something in their language as a ttattoo for war. And white dudes or woods would have a tattoo of Vikings and Nazi related stuff because it inspires fear and even if you as a white inmate don't have racist views you do need to inspire fear. White dudes are one of the smallest groups in prison at least in California (In the upper midwest they're the majority in the Dakotas and Montana) but yet the Aryan Brotherhood is 1% of America's prison population yet they are behind 26% of all violence in all the prisons nation wide and believe it or not they often end up stabbing up their oiwn people more than minority groups unless there is a race riot kicking off. Am i denying there are actual white supremacists of course not but an actual Neo Nazi is going to not want to draw attention to themselves while a peckerwood fresh outta the joint might have a tattoo that says white power or a swastika but in reality that's more of a uniform than their actual beliefs a lot of times. If white dudes don't roll with their own they will get fucked up just like any other race does in prison. This is more of a west coast thing though while on the east coast black dudes run the prisons it's a bit more even in the west but in the east and south black dudes run things and a lot of non black inmates get preyed upon so in the west there is a lot less sexual assault and less interracial violence because that would kick off a riot anybody who has ever done time in California will tell you that this is the case. There's ruthless inmates in every group in prison including Asians who are the smallest population in prison yet they too often have to be the most brutal so really it's kind of like a pick your own living hell between west and east.

i was amazed to learn how much Tony Kaye fought to take his name off the directorial credit, he released his cut of the film and the studios and Ed Norton wanted to add 18 minutes and it got messy, Ed Norton barely talks about this movie as the experience really soured him for awhile. Kaye got blacklisted for over a decade and this was his debut too. It does tinge the legacy of the film a little buy luckily not much. There is another part of me though that wonders if they had picked a more experienced director would this film have turned out better?

  • @andrewreynolds8100

19:00 (my own interpretation) I don't think he's apologizing for the fight happening. I think he was expressing that he's sorry that Derrick is the way that he is and is sorry for the pain Doris is going through. He feels sympathy for her, more so than he's sorry for what just happened.

  • @mage1439
    @mage1439 Год назад

Edward Norton gets a lot of credit as an actor, but he deserves much more credit for making this movie what it was. The director wanted an ending where Derek went back and forgot everything he'd learned, but EN saved the movie by being heavily involved in the editing.
Keep in mind this director said "I'm fully aware that I'm a first-time director, but I need the same autonomy and respect that Stanley Kubrick gets."
He later said his ego got in the way, and I like to think he realizes the movie is better than it would have been.

The shooter that killed Derrek's little brother was the little brother of the kid that Derreck killed. a good subliminal message from the movie to take is that you are a role model in life to people as a peer so you have to be mindful of the way you carry yourself so not to mislead people in a path that's not right for them like how Derreck influenced his brother, and also similarly you have to be careful what you let influence you.

The original film ends after Danny (Edward Furlong) is shot by a black student (whose brother was killed by Derek (Edward Norton) earlier in the film). In Kaye's version, after this we are taken to a scene in the family apartment where the detectives are trying to comfort Danny's grieving mother and sister. The camera then pans away and cuts to a scene in the bathroom. We see the sink filled with hair and an electric razor next to it. Derek is stood there with his head shaved - he stares in the mirror and looks at the swastika on his chest, before pulling out a pistol. The film ends on a shot of Derek's sick smile, the same smile we saw when he was arrested for his murders earlier in the film.'
What do you think of this ending? Has Derek reformed enough not to go back to his old ways, or do you think it's more realistic that he goes back to it?
I prefer the ending we got.

@@OctoKrool The argument was essentially between "people learn" (Norton) and "people don't learn" (Kaye). My own opinion is that _individuals_ can learn but our _species_ doesn't. Thus we keep going through this over and over in every culture throughout history. Fear and hate of The Other is endemic to human beings and not some localized phenomenon based on this or that group's history. It's a very rare group that has never had to contend with this shit. We always find some reason to hate others, sadly, whether it's race, religion, appearance, etc. Hell, people have been persecuted and murdered for being _left-handed._ All we can do is try not to be asshats ourselves.

@@OctoKrool I feel like Norton's character had grown too much, he now knew that the way he felt and thought was so wrong that he was disgusted with himself for having been able to fall for it in the first place, it would have been completely out of character and a slap in the face of his growth and development. He no longer holds those opinions, he knows now that even his own race can be violent, judgemental, and ignorant like he had believed minorities to be, and he had made a decision that would prevent him from ever being accepted in that community ever again. In my mind the way it ended is the only way it could end, maybe Derek takes his mom and sister and they move somewhere else to get away, but that's not really relevant to the message and the exact story, so we can just assume something like that happens after the credits.

What should have stood out to you, op, is that while there is definitely unfairness in our criminal justice system, you are overlooking the fact that Derek was only sentenced to three years, because his brother wouldn't testify to what he saw.
It says very clearly, that Derek would have gotten life in prison had Danny testified.
He was perfectly within his rights to fire at the guy with the gun, that is self defense on his own property....
He went beyond self defense, when he curb stomped the guy, killing him. That is murder. Danny would not testify to it and nobody else saw what happened, so it was derek's word.

Not justifying what happened at the end, but it wasn't "just staring". I think the other guy saw it as disrespecting, which leads to embarrassment and shame, then being angry about that. I don't think they were brothers 🤔 the guys who Derek killed were the same guys who Derek and his mates beat on the basketball court, so they were gonna nick his car as payback for Derek and his mates winning the basketball match (this was black and white scene so was the past)
The lad who killed Danny was the lad who Danny disrespected in the bathroom when he blew smoke in his face so Danny got shot for that ( filmed in colour so it was the present)
I think they were trying to show how easily young people are influenced and manipulated by older people around them. Danny was influenced by his father, Derek/Cameron etc, and the young lad who shot Danny by the older people he knew etc. That's my take on it anyway 👍 a great film with fantastic performances by all and a film that stays with you long after the credits roll 🎥
