Jen and Holden in case you didn't know in the original script, Derek ended up shaving his head and going back to his hate after Danny's death, because Tony Kaye the director wanted to make the point that the cycle never ends and people don't learn. Edward Norton hated that idea and had him change the ending, because he wanted to make the point that the cycle can be broken and people do change. It's an interesting tension of viewpoints. Can humanity be capable of change or will we always be circling this dark pattern?

Honestly the old ending would render the whole thing moot. After all that Norton's character went through, he would recognize that what happened to his brother was just a consequence of both of their actions.

Jen & Holden, I'm a 50 yr old black man. If I knew a person like Daryl in his past and knew about it 1) I would not seek him out to befriend him. I would watch to see their actions. 2) His actions that he's changed for the better would have to speak volumes. I mean enough to fill the grand canyon. Over my years in life I've made friends with people very easily. It felt like hanging around with some people that I was breaking down the stereotype they had in their heads. And this was when I was a young adult in the early 1990's. Those that were not cool I just no longer hung out with them. I feel like I'm just rambling on. Anyway! good movie and story told. May I recommend the Kevin Smith directed movie Dogma, (Yup! that religious dogmatic law) The Color Purple (Directed by Spielberg) BlacKKKlansman (Directed by Spike Lee) based on a true story in the 1970's.

At the 11 minute mark I think Derek's family does know he has reformed since leaving prison except for Danny who was at a school and didn't hear Derek say so. On rewatch I paid more attention to when Danny gets home from school and in the living room the first thing he sees is Derek on his knees hugging his mom and sister. I assume that's him begging for their forgiveness for what he did to them in a later flashback.
Another thing too, the final line in Danny's paper that says "we are not enemies but friends" comes from Abraham Lincoln during his first inauguration as a final plea to the southerners who were seceding

I'm black and I feel that Derek's realization that there is some racism in the criminal justice system is when his coworker got 6 years for dropping a TV on the police officers foot and Derek killed a guy and only got 3 years. Overall I think Derek's redemption is great we all have done things that we are not proud of. I used to work in the prison system and I know all about having to join a group for protection and how easy it is to fall in with the wrong crowd. When you join these groups or gangs you stop thinking for yourself and someone else thinks for you and that's bad.

    • @jongordon7914

This doesn't really show racism in the criminal justice system. Derek was convicted of voluntary manslaughter. Depending on the state, 3 years is about average. Lamont, his laundry "coworker" stole a TV and because he dropped it on a cop's foot and broke the cop's foot, they called it assault on the cop or more likely, aggravated assault. Not really seeing where the racism comes into play.

What I see from media is selective editing and assumption of the worst motive for all things possible to manufacture a narrative that is mostly false, and over the last six years, it's gone Spaceballs-level hyper-active. I think Republicans - and specifically one certain Republican - have been lied about an awful lot over the last six years (though it started way befor this, I have come to realize). I said I wasn't a Republican, and I'm not, but I consider myself an open enemy of the Democratic Party as it is currently configured and behaving.
A lot of mindreading and bias, straw-maning, assumption, and exaggeration going on. It's also important to note that a person who is a mean or even evil isn't necessarily wrong about everything. I'm trying to avoid specific political topics because discussing politics on RUclips is folly, but immigration, for instance, is something you can be adamant about slowing down and controlling based on factors that are 100% not racist. So, to associate the desire to slow and control immigration with skinheads is incorrect and possibly deliberately manipulative.

22:01 when Holden started talking about how Fandom can bring people together. It's actually little more deeper conversation they're having about the Celtics and Lakers during their youths the Celtics were considered the "Whiter" team while the Lakers were the "Blacker" team. Larry Bird was called by the media and supporters once he joined the Celtics "The Great White Hope" naturally a lot of alt-white groups used this as a label. So seeing Derek being defensive about the Celtics is very telling and that he's holding on to his old ideologies thinking of that dynasty but its now shifted forward towards the Lakers favor.
I don't know if Holden keeps up with sports but just thought I'd add something to the conversation. Love the channel and reactions.

As a black person, (as Holden wondered on our thoughts) this movie is heavy, profound, emotional etc. I cried for Danny because I know how PEOPLE are influenced and led astray by predators of any group, male/female, black/white etc. In the end people want power and they want subjects. All groups. I’m a Christian so I see things through the filter of God, and I genuinely care about people. There is power in victimhood and there is truth in what people have suffered. But many people want to hide away their trespasses and their offenses. Kudos to you all for not being afraid to look in on this topic. There are hard truths that we must all face. Racism, sexism, religious persecution, etc. - The making of American history x is also a fascinating watch! On RUclips!

It was used all the time pre-WWII in the USA and Europe as a good luck charm, boy scouts, Coca-Cola ads, even a school sports team was called "The Swastikas". In the 1870's, archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann found the city of Troy, thought to be a myth. Everywhere on the pottery there were swastikas...eventually people started linking the symbol to an ancient Aryan race that founded most of the great ancient civilizations throughout the Indo-European region (Europe, Iran (literally means Aryan), India, etc. The Nazis adopted the myth that they were descended from these ancient people and the swastika became the official symbol of the (German) Aryan people. It's also found in lots of completely unrelated cultures, like Native Americans, too because it's basically a "sun wheel", the sun, spinning, with light rays, easy for unrelated people to create the same symbol.

Edward Norton had a hard time during the filming of this film. He was close to alot of African American men and women and showed alot of love to them and had to make sure if they saw the film that he is not like that. He showed so much respect for African American people in a way during filming but when he was not filming. I have so much damn respect for Ed Norton and how powerful his performance was as a nazi soldier but off screen he was so loving to everyone. I love him as a negative character and a good loving one. As someone who holds conservative values (I’m libertarian politically) , I hate that they use vaguely “conservative” talking points (probably the same way Holden doesn’t like how they use Christianity) talking points aren’t necessarily racist and it goes both ways. Although the types of racism are different.
    Example:
Republican talking point: We need tighter border security.
Racist reasoning: Mexicans are criminals and their stealing our jobs and ruining our country.
Rational reasoning: Cartels use our borders for human and drug trafficking. I don’t care if they’re handing out green cards and work visas in mass at the border, I just want to make sure that people are who they say they are and that they’re not trafficking drugs.
Democratic talking point: We need affirmative action.
Racist reasoning: Black people just aren’t as smart as white people, they need more help. They don’t know how to do things like white people do.
Rational reasoning: Black people have been historically oppressed and excluded in these areas. We’re going to try and correct that by giving them a helping hand.
I see just as many actual racists on the left as the right. Meaning people that actually have racist reasoning behind their beliefs. The only difference is hard racists tend to lean right and soft racists tend to lean left. Hard racists being hate groups like white supremacists, soft racist being people just believe that other groups aren’t as smart as or as good as theirs and they have “sympathy” for those groups.

    • @nunyabidness9692
      @nunyabidness9692 2 года назад

I’ve never seen a democrat give that racist reasoning for affirmative action ever. I have seen a LOT of that racist reasoning on the republican side. As for affirmative action, it’s not about giving a hand. Historically, white people in the US were including white people in “higher” careers and excluding people of color, no matter qualification or location. Businesses should reflect the areas that they’re in. If your business is in a black majority area and you have 0 black employees, then there’s a problem. That’s really why affirmative action exists, not to give black people a job regardless of experience or qualification.

Conservative here. Everyone here can believe what they want to, but I can say with certainty that most Conservatives, most not all, have absolutely no problem with other races. Be that Black, Latino, what have you. The problem we have towards immigration is the illegal aspect of it. A countries security isnt anything to play around with. Staying as much out of politics as possible, the mainstream media paints almost all Conservatives in a bad light, nothing but negative. Whereas the other side(you'll have to look into it, most likely) literally depicts minorities as people who can't do things for themselves, thus keeping the same 'victim' mentality inside minorities. I invite you to look at alternative news sources. Anyways, I love your guy's reactions, gonna give this one a thumbs up as well. If you've made it this far, just know that those who do follow these ideologies as shown in this movie, those aren't viewed as sane by the vast majority of us. There's bad eggs on every side, so that's all you see in the news

I always like to tell the people who keep asking about what happens next, or keeps guessing at the trajectory of the movie, that they need to let the movie tell the story because I will not do it justice.

@@van7915 I agree with you and people do that. It’s a process. You can’t just walk into someone else’s country just like you can’t walk into someone’s else’s house. I’m all for people coming to this country going to other country’s and making a life where you want. Especially if you are in a situation where your life is at risk and that’s why there is a process. The truth is 99.9% of people who come over the border don’t qualify for asylum because they live in a country where they can make a living.

@@van7915 did you just say that? how old are you? States are in America. One country. What the fuck did I just read. You are a citizen of the United States which means you can travel to any part of America. Different countries have their own laws and restrictions and different ideologies. It’s completely different than moving to another state. I’m not calling you dumb but that is the stupidest shit I have ever heard

Little fun fact about this movie is the original ending to this movie sees Derek going home after Danny’s death and would show him shaving his head going back to his old ways, but the director thought it was a terrible way to end the movie and changed it to what it is now.

There's room for redemption for everyone in regards to racism/hate. As a black man there will always be levels of skepticism in terms of believing said people are being genuine just on the historical basis of that being some ploy. With that said, I feel like as the times/generations go on we try our best to find commonalities with an effort to dispel that culture. In that effort, the more people that buy in to that change build bridges of trust making it easier to see each as we truly are dispelling hate bred from differences and lack of understanding. Most people however hold on to hate because it makes whatever insecurities or inferiorities they feel they have easier to cope with in turn ruining it for groups trying change things. We as a people(Americans specifically)won't break that loop until we truly right the wrongs of those sins rooted in everything that we do and how it has effected us all...Anyway one of my favorite flicks didn't expect to see this one on this channel your wife is a gem bro honestly lol. My favorite channel on RUclips wish more people were like you both don't ever change and you guys have to do Dogma great movie!!! Keep it Chandler & Monica God Bless🙏🏾
