1. The racecraft of Hamilton to reverse the DRS detection.
2. The reaction time of Alonso to keep the DRS detection and awareness.
I wonder how many other drivers on the grid would have been as crafty as these two legends. Not many!
Maybe max, but no one else
Albon and Perez had a similar moment in spa
Nicola Noel Max wouldn't, he doesn't think smartly enough and would've shot past Lewis there.
@@katphisH11 It wasn't a similar moment, because Albon slowed because Perez got wide and there was waving yellow flag in sector 1 and the detection point for drs is closer to eau rouge
Vettel would have forgotten the brakes on the corner and spun himself

You can tell from these moves just how much Alonso trusted Hamilton not to do anything stupid to block him. Both brilliant drivers with lots of respect for each other.
It's really sad we didn't get to see more battles between them
@@edismehmedali4666 The racing gods listened to your regret today!
@simpleton :) I think, when they were in the same team, they had utter contempt for each other!
This didnt age well.
@@ArnavChaudhary-yq6vq really? Alonso v Hamilton Hungary '21!
0:50 shows the driving genius of both Hamilton and Alonso. Hamilton brakes to get the DRS for the next straight (which is already a class move by itself) and then, in a fraction of a second, Alonso not only sees Hamilton braking, but also judges that he brakes for that very reason, decides he needs this advantage for himself and brakes exactly as much as to get to the precise speed Hamilton was going after braking in order to get a decent shot even before the next straight. And mind you, at a speed of well over 50 metres per second, he only needs about 4 metres for all of the previously mentioned.
@Nicolas Andriotto He wasn't just talking about the move itself but the circumstances. Of course F2 drivers can get away with that as their cars are substantially slower.
@Nicolas Andriotto I don't like Alonso myself, but there's no doubt that it's very difficult to have that kind of awareness at the top level. It's not just speed, it's racing intelligence.
And also downshifts in order to have the engine on high rpms and having more power to counterattack
Every online lobby ever
Yeah they might be going over 50 m/s, but relative to eachother the speed difference was about zero (before braking). Duing/after braking the relative speed difference was nowhere around 50 m/s. Still very impressive of Alonso to not fall for the trick
0:49 That moment, when they both slowed down to have the DRS for the back straight, was brilliant!
I loved how quick ALO reacted!
It's clever thinking by Lewis and quick reaction from Fernando but i find it rather sad that this has to happen. It's not what racing and especially F1 is about.
TvLOverdose Sure man, but drivers have to compromise their driving to the regulations. The one that compromises the best will win, simple. It's the same for the teams.
TvLOverdose it was clever and beautiful because both drivers reacted really quickly and it shiws they use their head to drive and not only their car. The thing is that the canafian drs gives a huge advantage because it works for both straight. So unlike malaysia (if i'm not mistacken) you can be nearly 100% sure to suceed your overtake if you habe the drs. The question now is how much power in race condition the mercedes engine have over the ferrari one and will williams and force india be able to challenge Red Bull
CptGiorgis i agree, sure it might not be the best racing on paper, but still is proper racing ! quick reactions to get the overtake done... quite beautiful I must say !
Both brake just before the DRS detection to have it in the straight line XD
You may be informed, but it is possible, as you have shown, to be both informed and ignorant. Did you actually look at the link posted? Nobody said anything about the red light on the rear of the cars.
dopiaza2006 he's obviously not informed. Didn't click on the link, so... No.
I see what you mean know. But instead off bashing that I was ignorant you could have just told me that I was misinterpeting our comment and that I had too look at the telemetry.

A less experienced driver would have shot past Hamilton thinking he'd won the battle, but not Alonso. He was wise to the situation and showed his unquestionable skill.
Was that for the DRS zone? Is that why Hamilton braked suddenly?
Yeah Hamilton braked cause he wanted Alonso to cross the DRS detection line before him so Hamilton would get it, but Alonso was too clever for that shit.

0:49 That deliberate slowing down for the DRS Detection point...
Haha brilliant. Lewis tried it but Alonso's reactions were to quick.
A little curious, is there ever been another race where someone deliberately slowed down to get DRS?
SGT EpicSpeed Belgium, same year, same drivers XD but that time Hamilton did get the DRS but Alonso kept the position after a late breaking.
What does slowing down achieve?

The only battle Alonso will have this year, is between him and his engine.
But will the engine be an F1 one or a GP2 one?
Half a year later and a bunch of engine "upgrades" later...nope, still GP2.

Who is there after great Alonso vs Hamilton battle at Hurgaroring?
Back when Alonso could race against Hamilton, Vettel or Räikönnen. Poor Alonso.
Ichigo Kurosaki thanks to honda
kyle reese Yeah but Alonso made the mistake to join McLaren in the first place.
Ichigo Kurosaki Alonso shouldnt be in thr Mclaren Honda he should be in a car that battles for the drivers championship and also the constructots championship thats where he should be
+Ichigo Kurosaki back years ago Honda powered dominant teams, which is probably why he decided to move teams
he should not leave Ferrari, he said It wasnt a mistake to leave Ferrari but im really starting to think It was, for me back then i said that go mc-honda, for a new project was a very risky decision and indeed It was, since 2015 Ferrari is on the top with RB and Mercedes, and Mclaren? It looks a back marker. so painful to see a good driver waste his talent of this way.
Cheeky nando slowing down before the drs line
EDIT: it was pretty cheeky from Lewis aswell
Looks like they both tried it, it's like on the F1 games haha
Yep... switched on as anything
Axel Hogdal because hamilton fucked up the chicane and then he tried a cheeky move, but alonso was smarter and brakes before the drs line.

tup.tama.dre in 2013 tu.pu..tama.dre in 2023
Stunning race craft from Alonso. He knew he was faster and had a traction advantage out of the corners. As soon as Hamilton got a little bit to much curb on the entry of corner 7, which unsettled his car, Alonso had him in his pocket. Even though Hamilton tried to trick him with the DRS line and went in a little deeper than usually at the hairpin to affect Alonso’s exit/traction, Alonso got it bang on when he went to the left of Hamilton on the straight to make him stay inside, which Alonso knew would result in Hamilton getting a bad exit of the last chicane so he broke early got a perfect exit was early on the power and got him. Just a perfectly set up overtake
Alonso = Legend.
alonsos reaction at the DRS detection point was brilliant. Lewis clearly didn't count with that.
Absolute Legend why did they brake after the drs point?
Cream if you lead at the drs point, you will not get drs, which is a massiv advantage on those 2 straights
Well Lewis also slowed for the drs point...
@@nanderlizernanderlizer684 what do you mean "also", he said "Lewis clearly didnt count on that" he meant Lewis slowed for the drs point just enough to let alonso lead and he didnt "count" for alonso to also brake, so basically alonso braked BECAUSE lewis braked

@macaco860 Fake news.
Actually Alonso was fully supported by his crew of mechanic's and engineers the whole season long, even after he tried to blackmail Ron Dennis into sabotaging Hamilton's career, using his own involvement in illegally sharing Ferrari IP, via emails with Pedro De La Rosa and Mike Coughlan.
If Ron really wanted to stop Alonso he could have just throne him out of the team or made his car break down every race.
Hamilton beat Alonso in the same car and made Alonso run away from that car, like a coward, before becoming the McLaren world champion in 2008 that Alonso failed to be and Alonso never recovered to win a title at any point while Hamilton has been in f1.

Alonso to me has been the most exciting driver to watch since Senna or Mansell. The raw aggression is awesome and I feel deprived a not having as many head to head battles with him and Hamilton.
I don't know if it's because there's so many new fans to F1 or if it's just a case of the Hamilton hate brigade trying to rewrite history but, back in the earlier years, Hamilton burst on to the scene and was the spectacular, aggressive racer that you are talking about. He was seen as the most naturally gifted wheel to wheel racer and overtaker on the grid and the Senna comparison's were never too far away.
Verstappen today is basically a clone of the young yellow helmet Hamilton, so I'm not sure why you are pretending that Alonso had that label when he was always regarded as more of a robotic driver, like Schumacher.
True f1 historians will document the impact that Hamilton had on the sport back when he was the young aggressive hot shot
@Juana Oltra I wasn't responding to you.
But since we're here.
Alonso's last title was 2006, 14 years ago.
@@troop-r Sure sure.

Your comment is hilarious though. Alonso made so many mistakes because he couldn't handle the pressure of not having preferential treatment over Hamilton. In fact, Alonso has not faced a competitive teammate in the pressured environment of a competitive car since losing to Hamilton in the official championship standings in 2007, meanwhile, his Ferrari years were in a team that built everything only around him to the absolute detriment of Felipe Massa's career.
Alonso had his chances but blew it. His last title was in 2006 and he never managed to win a title at any point after Hamilton destroyed his career by beating him in the same team and making him run away before becoming the McLaren world champion in 2008 that Alonso failed to be.

Come on mate, its undeniable. Alonso was supposed to be the guy winning all the titles after Schumacher and he joined McLaren at the exact perfect time to become a 4xWDC, with 2 different teams, by the end of 2008. It would have made him an instant legend but Hamilton literally walked into his life, exposed him as someone who can not handle an internal teammate battle for a championship, made him resort to trying to blackmail his team boss, beat him in the official championship standings, made him run away from the team, but, the most humiliating part of all is that Hamilton then became champion with such a great team in McLaren, that has legendary history and Pedigree, whereas Alonso never managed to do the same and never won another title at any point while Hamilton has been in f1.
Hamilton is amongst the list of legendary McLaren world champion's and Alonso isn't. He's a failed McLaren driver and it directly correlates back to his time against Hamilton.
