jjforyomama That's Radiohead in a nutshell.
Could not agree more with that. So many songs has grown on me
especially when you hear them played live ... astonishing
A Moon Shaped Pool stands as my 2nd favorite Radiohead LP to Kid A. From Burn The Witch to True Love Waits (with its ethereal, haunting musical arrangement) this is a brilliant album.
+Charles Dunkley
Amnesiac isn't your favorite? What kind of fucking pleb are you.
+Charles Dunkley Really, you liked it more than In Rainbows?
Everette Haire In Rainbows is a fantastic album. While the high points on that might peak higher than those on Moon Shaped Pool for me - taking in an album as a singular whole - Moon Shaped tops it for me. But time will tell if it keeps it's place.
Not listened to all their albums, but from what I've listened to I'd say
Kid A > OK Computer > In rainbows > AMSP
But I still really like a moon shaped pool, just not as good as their other albums in my opinion.
For me, it'd be - In Rainbows > The Bends > Kid A > OKC> Amnesiac > AMSP
This album has aged beautifully. It deserved a 10 and you can't change my mind.

It’s also about depression which is quite interesting

Solid 8/8 album. Well done Fantano.

OK Computer is EASILY their best album from 1997.
Slightly rivaled only by Homework
8bitdiedie Is Homework a Radiohead album?
Nicely Memed My Dude I think so too.
+TheAmazinTacoChannel But OK Computer is the only album they released in 1997?
TheAmazinTacoChannel Oh, I thought you meant 1997 albums in general.
The week this album came out, my best friend got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I don’t think I’ve ever cried more to a record than this one, but A Moon Shaped Pool helped me understand what true grief was before my friend was even gone. It holds a special place in my heart.

Thom's wife left him, and there were some deaths in the family of the band members.. how did you think this was going to sound.
+Bootsy Collins I doubt there is a difference.
+Joris0815 Id like to think there is a difference but that doesn't mean he didn't feel .. you know.. what he felt. Doesn't matter rly though the music is what matters for me.
Left him? You mean battled cancer and died right?
They broke up and then she died of cancer.
Wow what a double punch for Thom, the poor man.
I dont know why, but I want Radiohead's 10th album to be called RAD10HEAD.
I don't know why, but your profile pick is giving me ear-cancer from all the way over here. But you like Radiohead, so...don't know WUT to think.

Good review and all, but how can you not like Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief?! That song is the shit
its one of the best, its just so good.
My favourite on the album.
It's ironic that he called it directionless. For me, that's the most progressive song on the album. In my eyes, that's when the album crescendos, then True Love Waits is an epilogue.
worst song on the album by a long shot

This album has since become my fav of their catalogue. It takes the softer parts of In Rainbows and the introspection of Kid A and fuses them so well. It also just sounds really warm and inviting, even though much of the general vibe is pretty down (as ever). It's the semi-funky beat running through Identikit, the sweeping sadness of Daydreaming, the menacing build-up and explosion in Ful Stop.. it's masterful..

don't blame fantano tbh, I thought for quite some time it was "distance" too lol
Isn't it supposed to be a reference to Buddhist philosophy? The "dance" is supposed to mean meditation, using a hyper focus on the immediate present you're in to block out all the anxieties and concerns of the outside world while it crashes around him

first Radiohead album I bought, love it to pieces, have recently splurged on their discography, thanks for spuring my interest Mr Fantano!
Radiohead didn't suddenly become depressing. You'll always find songs from all 9 of their LPs that are depressing. The fact that thom Yorke did recently go through a divorce probably did boost the depression levels in the lyrics and the instrumental
Yeah radiohead have definitely always kept that emotion, (how to disappear completely, wolf at the door, hell, pretty much all of okc for me) but this album is definitley that emotion at its most powerful and direct. True love waits, for example, is the best love song I've ever heard and brings me close to tears every time I hear it. And that's just one track.

king of limbs is still a great part of their discography, they just experimented with loops, the loops form a kind hypnosis and atmosphere on each song and an effective mood, I think they're all pretty great experimental songs on that one, A Moon Shaped Pool is definitely more human and organic tho

@@ClawedMug evolving? That’s their best album by a country mile… might want to reword that.
In Present Tense I heard it as "this dance" rather than "distance"
I thought I was the only one
The lyrics are "This dance" so you're actually right :)
this dance is a weapon and it is called capoeira
If you have a proper headset/earplugs and preferably a good ear you clearly hear him pronounce (d)istance and not (th)is dance. Besides, there is a distinct difference in the pronounciation of the word "dance" and the tance in "distance". It's clearly the latter.
Stian Hegglund Thom's pronunciation is always real weird. But in an early version of the song the line was "When we dance", which points to the line being "this dance"
Yep, not a party album. This is 'alone time' music. But an 8? Deserves higher, IMO.
Disagree. Even an 8 is too high a rating. IMO of course.
While i agree that the album does not deserve a 10 i also can't understand why death grips deserves a fucking 9 i try to listen to them but i just can't understand their apparently unfathomable greatness
+Prodigy I'm a Radiohead fan and Bottomless Pit is my AOTY so far
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i love both bands a ton.
Opinions. That is all.
+Prodigy yeah ahri is kinda a pussy champ tbh
+Prodigy Many people who are huge fans have just been fans for many years; we have an old fondness for RH and listen to everything they do through that old fondness. That said, I feel like even if there's a song by RH that doesn't appeal to me personally, usually I still feel like it's very complex and meticulous. Think of a piece of modern art that you may not personally think is beautiful enough to hang up in your living room, but which still blows you away because you can tell the artist was very talented and didn't just splatter the canvas randomly with paints.
Part of the reason that some people are such big fans of RH is because they are genuinely cool to their fan base; and also they really try their best to be good people, which is more than you can say for a lot of other bands, especially ones who have enjoyed so much success. Thom is a genuinely good person, and so sweet to his fans. Very modest guy.

King of Limbs:From the Basement is the better version of that album, it really shows off the songs correctly.
+IamLiterallyRetarded From the Basement made me appreciate the album versions more as well. I hope they get the London Contemporary Orchestra into the basement for a performance of A Moon Shaped Pool too.
Absolutely agree. That’s an album that would’ve been WAY better if it had been more organic. Basement proves that.
@@TheseBitchesWantNikes Plus, the production is so consistent in the Basement version. To me the album felt like a bunch of disjointed recordings, obviously recorded at different times and with different priorities, it never really melded into a coherent blend of songs. Thank god they went to the Basement again -that is the album version to me now. I wish they would have done a Basement session for MSP too, oh well.

right!! kinda random how he said that
Henrique Lopes I think that was just a warning to people who've never listened to Radiohead, u know, casual peeps
Mate, you always manage to articulate how I feel about the music I listen to so well. I love how diverse your reviews are, you don't box yourself in by just focusing on one or two genre's, your not afraid to review anything and everything which gives you a roundness, or sensibility for want of a better word that allows someone like me to take you seriously. I also love how much time you devote to each review and how deep you get into each and every song. To take that emotional journey and manage to still stay objective each and every time, then take the time to produce/edit and upload is something few could probably do and manage to sustain long term as you have done. So well done man, and thank you sincerely for several years of grounded, intelligent reviews that often help me understand my own feelings about various albums I listen to. - Radiohead was all around me growing up, and yet I never really understood what the massive appeal was. I probably enjoyed listening to songs like Paranoid Android on the radio from time to time but I'd be lying if I said I ever truly dove into any particular album as a lot of people did. I typically find people who are into Radiohead are proper fanatics, and the rest are just impartial like myself, but I have to say after hearing "Burn the witch" I found myself really enjoying this album and giving it some real time. After going back and listening to previous albums, even albums considered their most successful I actually find myself listening to this new album far more then any of their older works. Your right it isn't something you would throw casually on at a party, as a listener its kind of an intimate, more proactive experience which I really dig. - One question while I'm doing so well here, going through your video's I couldn't help but find any reviews on Tool albums. Forgive my ignorance if you have reviewed any of their albums, but if you haven't I'd love to hear your thoughts on any of their albums, in particular their last 3. (Definitely some good click bait for you as well as any Tool fan within 100 meters of a keyboard will be jumping on what they hope might lead to some new info on their mythical upcoming album lol)
FUL STOP AND IDENTIKIT ARE SO GOOD. THOSE TEXTURES ANTHONY. THOSE TEXTURES
So do the tunes come haunting back to you even after you have stopped listening to it? Those are the kinds of forever great albums and Radiohead sure are ones who do that. And as some would say, they are like fine wine.
+creekandseminole totally!
+creekandseminole Decks Dark is the song on the album that does this to me most. Such an amazing vibe from that song, so dark and haunting but oh so beautiful.

+creekandseminole no, they don't

I'm so fucking glad that this album turned out as amazing as it did; I'll admit j wasn't expecting much when I listened to it the day it dropped.

Porco-Dio FIlm I knew it wouldn't disappoint
Just curious, now you've had time to let yourself digest it, do u still love it?
Every time I come back to this video I'm surprised by the Hbox cameo
I think the rating is about a tad low, but hey, that's your thing. I think it's a masterpiece, one which will only grow with time. Then again I've been waiting for them to put out a record like this for at least (almost) 9 years, so I'm biased. Light on the ears, heavy on the heart for sure. I can't remember the last time I've been devastated by a track like "True Love Waits", and the rest of the album speaks as a whole piece, which I can't say about a Radiohead album since Kid A- and even then, this is more cohesive... maybe not more impressive, but almost, which says a lot.
Pretty sure the lyric in Present Tense is "this dance" not "distance" as past versions had it as "when we dance", but a nice interpretation nonetheless.
Yep. And the whole song is about how he manages to get by by continually doing the same “dance” without getting distracted.
It's been two years and this has become my favorite Radiohead album. The list goes:
A moon shaped pool.
Kid A.
Ok Computer.
In Rainbows.
Amnesiac.
The Bends.
What about “Hail To The Thief”?
amsp, amnesiac, the bends, in rainbows, ok computer, kid a, hail to the theif, pablo honey for me.
he forgot to talk about Identikit bruh
Great review - in fact probably one of the best i've seen/read on the album. I just feel the vision, humanity and majesty of such an album requires a 9 plus. Fact is you don't get this kind of album very often (closest thing I can think of is a Talk Talk album). So yeah, certainly not for everyone but as a piece of art it is genuinely great. I do sometimes wonder if some new band made such an album, we'd all be so surprised and impressed with the musicality of them we'd be handing out 10's left right and centre. It's an 8/10 for a Radiohead album, but for say an Arcade Fire album it's an 11/10.
"Hey it's me, I just got off the train"
Thoms wife of like 20 years died right before this album released. One of the songs has reversed vocals at the end talking about his wife. Having this in mind makes the album so much more haunting
decks dark is the best Radiohead has done for a long time (and there's a lot of competition)
+TheKnowlesy56 God that song has attitude too.
+Jack Heathen maybe life in a glasshouse and national anthem are better, but decks dark is easily the best on amsp
TheKnowlesy56 It's tough to say which older song is better than a newer song, all I can say this album feels fresh. There's certain vocal tones and styles Yorke hasn't sung before this album making it tough to compare to previous albums. Ful Stop is also a strong addictive track.
+Jack Heathen yeah first time I heard ful stop it gave me the chills. reminds me of the national anthem in the way it's grounded to one bassline but somehow floats away somewhere. you can choose to stay on the ground with the bass or to float up with Thom
TheKnowlesy56 That's perfectly said, and I feel the same thing. Present Tense makes me wanna move and tear up at the same time, I adore Latin music. This album is so emotionally mature and real, I had to stop listening for an hour. Many are arguing if this album is an audio allusion or analogous to Yorke's divorce which could explain a lot of things.
Near the end you talked about how new listeners would have trouble with the album, but one of my friends who only knows a some songs by RH, hasnt gotten attached to an album yet, just connected with it instantly.
Good review but I think you could have talked more about the energetic tracks that just sound perfect with along with the slow tracks
+ledraps22 maybe because sounds like old sigur ros and coldplay
Fantano, you're easy on the ears but heavy on the heart
+Hybridtheory32 more like easy on the eyes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Great review! My favourite album of the year, and I have to admit I'm pretty obsessed with it, listening to it every morning on the way to work for about 3 weeks straight! Healing, haunting and harrowing; a fascinating place to visit and probably my favourite of their albums to date..and I've been there since the beginning. Thanks again for a great video.
This album has been helping me process, when my mental health is unstable, for the last few years. I actually didn't realize the sadness in the majority of the lyrics but it makes sense how someone with mental health challenges could relate and use this as a tool for processing. I know this video is quite old but thanks for the thoughtful review.
I gave this album a listen at night in the dark and it gave me the feeling of peacefulness and dread at the same time.
Especially Daydreaming and Decks Dark are stunningly beautiful.
I think this actually tops Blackstar for my favourite Album of the Year so far!
Only on RUclips will people compare Radiohead and Death Grips.
specifically this channel
This was a really nice review(first one of yours i've seen). I'm not an audiophile either, but I was for the most part knowledgeable of any contextual things you mentioned.
I love the eerie, orchestral strings and piano. One of my favorite projects by them.
Some of the songs by them self could come off as too slow or melancholy but in the context of the album they fit perfect. The video for Daydreaming gives the song a new life.
Skepta - KONNICHIWA!!!

Who else thinks this is 100% better than Pablo Honey?
Joseph Ross pablo honey isnt even close to their best
Gh Gh for me it's this against ok computer. Ok computer is pretty much what I think of when I think Radiohead. Mind my profile pic
Christian Castellanos ok computer is definitely one of my favorite albums by them alongside the bends
Anything is better than Pablo Honey, let's face it
Roberto Lovisi Pablo honey is incredible. It's just associated with basic normies only because of creep and you
I love this album. It's got that Classic Radiohead sound with enough fresh layers of paint to make it fresh. Thoms singing is as good as ever and many of the tracks have a hypnotic cathartic vibe. A solid project that I will keep spinning for a while.
I think 5/10 is a bit harsh
Only the plebs are thinking Tinker isn't one of the best songs.
Why is no one talking about hungrybox being in the intro
That’s what I wanted to know
I like this album a lot. It's growing on me. I found myself instantly loving Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows. More so than the songs on this album, at this moment at least. The two singles are superb to my ears and i think they're my personal stand-out tracks, although Glass Eyes is quickly becoming a favourite also. To be honest, there's few Radiohead tracks, from any album that I don't like, so my judgement is very probably clouded with fanboy headphones. I just like how they sound to my ears.
