    I'm white, and I still follow hair and skin advice from natural hair girlies. I had to shave my head for medical reasons and was feeling low and went to a subreddit to feel my feelings and it was black women who gave me SO much love and care and I swear I have never ever been more grateful to random strangers.
    Other white girls ask me how the hell my hair grew so long and it is like....yeah, not washing it all the dang time, hydrating it, keeping it in protective styles, wearing a bonnet and trimming when you need it.
    My hair is long and healthy, my scalp isn't dry or oily, and I do not use expensive products. Like, obvi I'm a white woman with just straight/wavy hair, so not all advice applies to me. But lord, the basics have been everything.

      @user-mg6in9cq9e A lot of what makes up black hair and skin care, from what I have had suggested to me, is a lot of really "cheap" products too. And not in a bad way. A lot of K-beauty, for example, it pretty pricey and complicated.
      I use black soap (the real stuff) to clean my skin and hair and then Shea butter to condition my hair and skin. Sometimes, I'll put coconut oil in my hair before a wash, leave it in for a few hours before washing it out, and when my skin is particularly dry, I'll grab the coconut oil.
      I live in Australia, so finding black-owned businesses can be difficult, but not impossible. And totally worth it.
      When I lost my hair, it was black women who helped me understand wigs and assured me that I wouldn't look ridiculous, and it was these ladies that helped me grow it out. I'm extremely grateful to those communities.

    I put my hair away every winter and take it out in the spring. So for about 4-5 months of the year my hair is in protective styles. The dry cold air is horrible for curly hair. But I also find that another advantage to this is i have more patience to deal with my hair after having it put away. Not property taking care of it when it’s out is what causes the most damage. So, I see her wetting, detangling and mosturizing/conditioning length (and twisting), shampooing roots only, rinsing, then untwisting and moisturizing again. Is that right?
      My baby has thicker, curly hair, and I'm not sure how to maintain her moisture?
      My hair is thin, curly. Not sure all that butter will be good for my thin hair. I just use sulfate free shampoo, a butter mask/deep conditioner, then a glaze.
      But if you're using all that oil and butter, when do you clarify?

    • @cheesepizza1623
      @cheesepizza1623 10 месяцев назад +9

      @@CoachLadyD you would clarify during shampooing, there’s tons of clarifying shampoo options. With maintaining your babies moisture it’s really trial and error just depends on what your daughters hair responds to, but you could start with using a good amount of water(what moisturizes), a hydrating leave in conditioner, and oil to lock it in. Hope this helps 😊

    The right oil actually revived my hair health. My hair is too thick and porous to go without an oil or butter. I don’t apply it daily but it’s routine enough that my hair that used to feel constantly dry and lose its length, is retaining length, stretch, and moisture (it’s applied after I moisturize lol) finally.

    I never understood putting a lot of work into maintaining length to never wear the hair out. It's okay to just wear a ponytail or puff everyday. I feel like as black women we tend to think our hair has to be styled when it's out or it's not "done" or neat enough but honestly our hair is fine in its natural state. But ofc we are allowed to feel how we feel and do what we want with our hair so no hate to this woman. Her experience is very valid

      I agree with you completely. It is really mind boggling that this is seen as "normal" in the natural hair community. At some point excessive "protective styles" are indistinguishable from hiding your natural hair because it's "too difficult to manage"😣

    • @amiiokok
      @amiiokok Год назад +41

      This might sound off, but to me it feels too vulnerable. I’m mixed and typically don’t look black to most people and i grew up in a relatively diverse area so it should matter less. BUT i was surrounded by non-black people who always ALWAYS were trying to touch my hair and making all kinds of comments about it even if it was straightened or whatever. I had a rough period where stress/malnutrition caused a lot of it to fall out and I’ve worn wigs ever since.
      The only comments I’ve gotten now are compliments and surprise surprise, no one touches my hair anymore. I only wear it around my close family at this point, but I take really good care of it; it’s full now and down my back. I just don’t care to be “exotic” to people in that way anymore. I’ll admit, some women are much stronger and more resilient than me when it comes to that lmao

    • @hitorisuko
      @hitorisuko Год назад +23

      I think, like most things, it depends on the person. I used to wear my hair out -- specifically ponytails and puffs -- everyday and it just wasn't healthy for my hair. I have a lot of hair and sweat a lot so it was very often hot and damp and puffy and unmanageable. To make it more manageable, I applied heat which ultimately damaged it more. I wore the ponytails so often that my hair started to break off where it was tied up at. It just felt bad. I felt bad.
      I tried out a bunch of products until I found something that worked well for me and started to wear it braided almost exclusively and wear wigs on the regular instead. Every other week or so, I take it out, do my maintenance, let it rest over the weekend and then braid it back up for the next few weeks. It's never been healthier with me just leaving it alone. It's full, my curls are healthy, and the length is great. It and I feel so much better now, even if I'm the only one to see it.
      I started a new job a few years ago and literally no one there has ever seen my natural hair. I can buy or style a wig whenever I want a change and I generally just save a lot of time and energy not crying over it in the mornings.

    Idc what anyone says I believe hair growth is hereditary !! I been natural for 7 years and never got past neck and I wear protective styles as well

    • @jessimow
      @jessimow Год назад +164

      While that's not totally incorrect, it's not totally correct either. Hair growth has to do with your immune system, and what you eat/ take can either trigger your immune system to excrete waste through your scalp (yes, hair is waste excretion), or keep signaling your body to excrete it in other ways. Eating a diet that is conducive to creating healthy gut bacteria that communicates with your entire body would be a start. That would require extensive gi testing and labs, which most people don't get unless you have an illness. So, yea 😢

    • @dovehaven4840
      @dovehaven4840 Год назад +133

      Hair growth is hereditary but if you can't grow your hair past you neck there are other problems. Good hair care, genetics and health leads to length retention. I thought my hair wouldn’t grow until I did this...
      Products: Suave Keratin shampoo and conditioner, As I Am Leave in Conditioner, As I Am Jamaican Black Castor Oil Spray, Blue Magic Hair Grease and Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel
      BE GENTLE with your hair
      1. Shampoo and condition in the shower. Rinse you hair out very well.
      2. Part your wet hair into four sections
      3. With one section apply leave in conditioner throughly. Use JBCO spray. Detangle with a wide tooth comb or good brush.
      4. Coat ends in grease. Apply a lil bit of grease down the hair. You can apply grease to your scalp if you wish.
      5. Apply a little gel if you want
      6. Braid your hair. I used to put 4 or 6 braids in each section. Now that my hair is longer I put 1 or 2.
      7. Repeat for the other 3 sections.
      I'd recommend washing your hair every 2 or 3 weeks. Leave your hair in the braids until the week or few days leading up to your wash day. If your hair feels dry at any point plan to wash your hair in the next few days. Yes you can refresh your hair with water and a little conditioner but I find it only helps me for a couple days.
      Some people don't feel beautiful walking around with Felicia braids/Coi Leray/Travis Scott braids so you can throw on a wig or a head wrap. Just don't forget to check on your hair
      BE GENTLE and give your hair some love. You got this!

    honestly as a hispanic with naturally curly hair, some people with straight hair don’t understand how hard it is for us to maintain our naturally curly hair. I use to have people always say “it must suck to have curly hair” which really made me want to have straight hair so I was afraid to wear it down naturally. but now I must say I feel happy with the way my hair is. it looks beautiful and there no need to change it. you should feel the same way too ❤️

I have very fine hair and a lot of hair but it's straight. It still gets really tangled. So seeing videos like this I get curl envy and also think omg that must be a lot... hunny dont. The grass is not greener over here. There are so many factors that make taking care of hair native to black folks so much harder. I have armpit length 4b 4a hair, believe me when I tell you it takes hours if not days to wash, detangle and style it. This is why you will often see us wearing protective styles or wigs and keeping the same style in for a very long time. We have beautiful hair but it comes at a price. Wash day can actually become a full day for many of us.
      It takes a long time for many of us to master what works for our hair and it differs from person to person, even if you have the same hair type it also differs each season and changes throughout our lifetime. Stay with your 1c hair. I am sure it has its own unique charm Love. God gave you what you could manage.
