Hydrostream Viking Restoration First Ride

- The first ride/weekend with the newly completed Hydrostream restoration. This boat has been in my family since 1980 and hasn't been in the water since 2004. I've spent the last 2.5 years on the restoration, countless hours, dollars, blood, sweat, and tears. Completely worthwhile if you ask me!
She's a handful at speed and I need more seat time to deal with the chine walk.
Still waiting on the interior, I'll add a new video when that arrives and is installed.

Beautiful! Hydrostreams have always been one of my favorite hulls. They are so sleek and timeless.
They handle very well too! Take speed well and can carve turns very well too.
Are they smooth, or ride rough? I've always wanted one.
Outstanding restoration ! Love watching "streams" fly !
Thank you! It's been a long road!
I've owned three Hydrostreams. My favorite was a '84 V-King with a 235 Johnson. Took me a while to learn to fly it. Into the 80s with a 14/28 chopper. Quick stabs of the wheel against the chine walk got it up on the pad. Your boat looks great! Congratulations on a beautiful restoration. Enjoy every minute.
Thank you! I'm sure I'll get it figured out this summer!
bump and release a jack plate will help a touch also, very nice looking boat. I have a vegas that is a handfull after 87 mph but gotta love it
Solid mounts on that Crossflpw 235 will help a lot. It’s crazy that when the 235 came out they were rated at the crankshaft 235hp and the exact same motor years later was rated at 175hp when rated like today at the prop. Killer engine and reliable as all get up. If you want to speak to the professional IM Flowmaxx on Screamandfly.com. He runs the Hydrostream power tour up in Wisconsin

We went pretty crazy in the day. I lived only a couple hour drive from Land & Sea. When we were done the power head made 275 hp. Mild port, light flywheel, big carbs, shaved heads, and cut the midsection for above water exhaust. Solid mounts was the first change I made. My buddies called it the big ice cream cone. 😂 Eventually got into the low 90’s (indicated, no gps then) Fun times. Now I’m an old man and enjoy slow boating on the ocean in New England.
I know in the Navy the speed of the ship was determined by haul design.. Great job. Beautiful boat. I wonder though what the max speed that haul is designed to run? It looks very stable. Probably capable of 80+mph
You gotta love that sound of a V6 two-stroke Merc !
They’re very unique and awesome!
Had a V-King 17' 1" 175 Merc (legal) NO2 96mph (84mph w/o NO2). 28 pitch chopper. Prop and 2" of pad only thing in the water. Very little spray. No wake. Just flying. There's a knack to steering a high performance V/Pad hull. Not all can hold it wide open. Second nature once you acquire it. LOVE YOUR WORK!
Thank you! That sounds like it was a sweet set up!
Amazing work on the rebuild your time and patience has paid off your knowledge and skill on the proper steps was incredible to watch .....thank you for sharing this with us
Thank you! It was a fun process learning how to do all this.
Watched all videos, DAMN!!! What an awesome job you did, I'm really impressed and I'll hope your dad and uncle are really proud of you making there old boat like new again. Thanks for those great videos.
Thank you! They sure seem to be enjoying it. Dad is planning to barefoot agin this summer and I’m learning to slalom ski. I’ll get some videos of that posted sometime this season.
Congratulations!! That is one fine boat ! Thanks for taking us along for the ride !
Thank you! Its been a long road.
Awesome work Tony.
Your doing it right!!
Smooth water and creeping up to chine walk, little steps....Then all at once you get it up on the pad and from then on....Fly baby Fly!!
So happy for you !!
James
Thank you, James! I'm starting to get the hang of it now.
What a fantastic total journey. Thanks for letting us ride along.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
1987 owned same set up V king Gold & orange colors. Many many memories. Stood her up a few times but never blew over.
Great video great boat !!!
I had a 21 ft 1984 hydrostream voyager bow rider that did 67 mph with a 200 merc .
This is incredible sir. Congratulations
Thank you!
Beautiful boat, love the older merc too.
Thanks! I think I've got about all I can out of the old motor. I have a 225ProMax that will be going on soon. I will keep the vintage cowls though.
That is without a doubt one of the nicest, most beautiful restorations I have seen! The metal flake came out amazing!
I can't wait to see you progress with the hull, and possibly engines etc, going to be a really fun time!
Thanks Shawn! I have a 98 225 ProMax that will be going on in the next month or two. Can't wait to see where that will get me!

Awesome I really enjoyed the videos. Beautiful Float!!
Thanks, Ted! Its a blast to drive now!
Great work! Boat looks amazing
Thanks! Its been fun!
You are a genius the work is huge 🙏🔥🔥🔥 These are really beautiful boats. Thanks for sharing 👊
Thank you very much! It was a labor of love to rebuild my childhood boat.
Beautiful boat sir Love the sound of those old needs screaming!
Thank you! It was a lot of fun with the original engine. But the newer ProMax is a whole different animal!
That's awesome man looks great! I'm happy for you! Have fun learning to drive on pad... that first few times when you can hold it on the mat as long as you want and you know you got it is like nothing else! Enjoy!
Thanks man! I’m getting pretty close to that point. Still trying a few more props too.
when your boat looks like a pissed off bald eagle wearing sunglasses on the trailer, you know its go time. What an awesome looking boat. Probably my all time favorite design I've seen.
Hahaha! That's a great way to put it! I love the look of these so much I bought another one.
You sir rock ! Very nice work and a great story.
Thank you!
Fantastic job looks like a total blast
Its a riot! Thanks!
Congratulations! Sweet boat and nice looking trailer. Merc sounds nice
Thank you, Scott!
Love your Boat man I bought me one close to that off the showroom floor out in TX in 1984 It had a 115hp Yamaha motor on it I had it 10 years and I came home one night and someone stole it The police seem to think the powerline guys got it They had the tools and bolt cutters that cut the cable the lock And the fence I never got it back I moved out of Brazoria Tx after that happen That was something I absolutely miss I loved my boat Thanks for sharing buddy
Thank you.
Sorry to hear about yours being stolen. What bummer. I hope karma gets the guys who took it.
Great job on the stream tony, spectacular job on the flake too
Thanks, Terry! I’m still surprised it turned out as well as it did.
Looks amazing, fantastic rebuild no attention to detail spared! What an awesome boat you now own. You should do another one? Thank you for sharing. You should be proud of yourself !
Thank you! I've thought about doing another one. But I don't want to do it agin in my attached garage. Smells pretty bad doing the glass work haha. Just need to get the interior done and I can all this project complete!
I'm at a loss for words but after watching the videos and seeing the smile on your dads face says it all. Good on you and very cool boat.
Thank you so much! That moment sure made it worth while. Along with being able to pull him skiing and bare footing agin was incredible.

That’s so sweet! I’m just restoring a speedboat. If it turns out half as good I’ll be happy.
Thank you! Good luck on your build!
Nice work!! Beautiful boat!!
Thank you!
Sweet rig. The late 70s and early 80s blue/black stripes always looked best to me......and ol black max on the lower cowl. Cant beat the sound of the 2.0/2.5 liter mercs. I sure miss the fast boat world. Sold mine a few yrs back.
Thanks! They sure are fun!
Awesome video !
Beautiful boat! Looks like you did a great job on the rig!
Thank you! I’m happy with how it turned out.
Fantastic result to all your hard work and skill.
Thank you! It was a great summer with it! Looking forward to another good year.
That's one class machine well done! Alan Northern Ireland 👍
Thank you, Alan!
Looks killer! Loved following along. Hopefully we'll be hitting the lakes together soon! Im SOOOO close to having the vulture on the water.
We gotta get the locals together one of these days!
@@TNels Absolutely!
Very nice to see the old boats ripping the lake still...we had a black 1982 hydrostream with a 150...
Gotta knew the history alive!
Number one you need a speed prop number two you need to put an automatic trim on there so you don't got to worry about trimming putting automatic trim you'll love it man you did a beautiful job on this boat
Nice job!!!
That is one sweet rig. So clean.
Thank you!
the most beautiful engine in existence. wowever it is better without silencer, very good sound.😉
I think so too!
Amazing job!
Thank you!
Good job, love it.
Nice boat man my brother had a 20 foot Valero tunnel I think 225 Mercury wise co pistons new reads and front half block with cabs put one the seat in the middle with aluminum angle iron switched the tac and the steering not to wreck the boat and it did very high 80s nice boat man good luck if the thing has a hook sand the hook out and it will really fly👍
No hook on the bottom, blueprinted hull thats flat and true. Just working on a few things trying to get it figured out and find some more speed.
I had a vector sweet boat, Congrats.
Thank you! I’d love to do a vector with an old inline 6.
Had a friend with a Viper. He referred to the speed where the boat started to chine walk as the “pucker factor”. Your boat looks fantastic! The history is awesome.
Thats a good mane for it, thanks!
There's also a speed at which the copilots' beer comes out of the can. + NASAL FLARE at @ 90.
Love this! It ain’t what ya buy, its what ya rebuild! Enjoy!
🌴🐈🐈🐈🌴🏴☠️
Thank you!
Excellent job!!!
Glad you liked it!
Hell yeah! Nothing is more satisfying than that first ride! Looks like it gets a bit sketchy at 66mph, lol. Awesome job!
Yeah that was a pretty good feeling the first time out. She starts to walk pretty well at the 65/66 mark.
What the hell you all talking about I like that feeling when it starts walking 18 ft bubble deck Nordic
Swaying back and forth doesn't seem stable imho.
I’ve got the walk pretty well figured out at this point. The lower had worked itself loose during this video and I didn’t notice it. With that all tight it handles much better haha
Sick dude Nice work!!
Thank you!
Man that thing is gorgeous
Thank you!
ABSOLUTELY SICK, LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT ‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸
Thank you! I've been loving it too!
awesome job on the restoration, when you get the balance and engine height adjusted you will have a screamer, Good Luck and great job
Thanks! I'll keep updating as I learn how to drive it.
Love it love it . Shes got more in her .
Oh she sure does! Found a bit more with some tuning on this old 2.0. Got it just over 70 with this setup, now running in the 90's with a 225 ProMax.
I had my 1986 Switzer SK175 with this same motor 175 Mercury V6 with Spinneli cupped 14x28 Hooter Land & Sea power transom got it to 68MPH and the stock gear case started to blow out and the boat started drifting in the rear. That was it 68MPH. You guys and the Hydrostreams have to try the Whale Tail on the Cavitation Plate takes off super low bow lift. Stays up above water after that.
I was running a whale tail on the original motor, after this video. Now I have a Bob's foil on the ProMax thats on it now.
Ha! I followed you insta page a few days ago and you just popped up on my RUclips finally some good videos!
Hey, thanks for the follow! I still have lots of props to try so they'll be more videos coming.
Nice job getting it to 70! My experience was that mid to high 60s was when the chine walk would start. A note on set-up. Hard to tell from the video, but it looks like the steering may be a bit stiff. With double cables, we want to take all the slack out by adjusting the cables against each other, but not so much that the steering becomes stiff. Really enjoy your channel.
Thank you. I have a few more props left to try with the engine before switching to the ProMax. PS I’m running SeaStar hydraulic steering, so there’s no adjustment with it.
@@TNels I’m still living in the ice age. No hydraulic in the old days. Makes life so much easier. Have a great time.
I would guess it’s the sea star pro series. Magnificent job on the restoration. 👍
She's a real beaut Clark!!!
Thanks!
Big Run for this old Sportsboat !
Bringing a classic back to life.
Nice up to about 60. Well done.
Thanks! I got the driving down a bit better in the next video.
Nice👍🏻I had the same boat same color too but OMC 175
Fun boats!
Well done.
Thank you!
I’ve wanted a Hydrostream since I saw them at a boat show back in the 70s.
They’re fun boats! I grew up with this one. Always gets a lot of looks!
Owned 2 ..16ft Viper 115Merc...
Then a 18ft Viking 225 Merc. Gold & Orange Metal flake. Then a 21ft Stallion tunnel hull 2.4 Merc.
I could watch this all day long! Great job !
Thank you! I could drive it all day long too. haha
Found the video I was looking for thank you for posting this
Glad you enjoyed it! Its a lot of fun!
@@TNels I want to restore mu boat as well like to pick your brain on the process do you have Facebook?
@@thedragonfarm I do have IG and FB. Have a look here, its a pretty detailed write up of the whole process. www.screamandfly.com/showthread.php?340316-1978-Viking-rebuild
My boat just needs a respray good sanding fill old holes it's different from your project and that's what I was wondering if I can sand it and spray it I don't have pin holes the gelcoat is just faded out bad
@@thedragonfarm I think you could just go over the gel, but can't say for sure. I left most the gel on my deck, but I did spray primer over that.
Very nice boat. I think that 26 is a bit much for that motor. I'd try a 22' or 24' prop. You should be getting 70's. I had 22' four blade setup on a 17' Champion with a 150 and got in the 70's.
It’s been a few weeks and I’ve found the tune up on the motor was pretty bad when I shot all these. It was the first time out. But she turns a 26 chopper to 70 now. I’ve run a 24 trophy and it revs too high up top.
bad ass boat .
Thank you! Its a ton of fun!
I have that same 83 Motor on my ski boat I love it
She runs like a champ!
Dude totally worth it. I congratulate you on the restoration, a true restoration, wow! And it was your family boat you brought back to life, even better. And another vintage 1970s Hydrostream saved from the land fill. 5 stars my friend. I have a redone 1975 Baja with a 1979 Johnson 140. I love these 1970s muscle boats. Greetings from Sandy Pond NY. You can check out my boat on my channel if you want. Peace.
Thank you! Hello from Minneapolis MN! Seeing the reactions from my family these past few weekends have made it all worthwhile. Subscribed to your channel.
This boat ran fine 😄
Runs even better now. Timing was way off, like 10 degrees retarded, when I recorded this.
I would just like to drive around with it on the trailer Nice
It sure gets a lot of looks and thumbs up!
She gets a little loose around 67mph lol. Dancing on the water I believe they call that. Great boat.
Yeah, turned out the lower unit worked itself loose. Very stable at speed now, just a bit of steering input to overcome the chine walk.
@@TNels nice work
Forgot, foot throttle too, real beauty.
Gotta have it! Wouldn't want to try without it.
Pretty rig
Thanks!
Wry nice job and restoration being a old prop head myself , have you ever tried a cleaver prop Might be something you may want to try, with that big ear your going to get a lot of bow lift,( great for bass boats)
I ran a 30 cleaver once and didn't like how the boat rode. Kept the nose really low. I may give it another go before selling that prop.
Running a four blade propeller straightened mine right out
I ran a 24 trophy that ran well. But I've switched motors and found a 30ET that runs very well.
Bit of chine walk just under 70 mph. Kinda common with that era and style of hull. Nice job though!
Yeah she makes you work for it a little bit. Getting better at with dealing with it each time out.
Great build. What is the brand of gauges you used?
Thanks! They're Livorsi.
Great job, FINALLY!..LOL. i know the feeling after all that hard work to get to enjoy it now. What prop you running? I ran a 4 blade mercury promax on my stream with nosecone level with the pad .you can almost drive it with one hand at 87mph..im running a 29 pitch pro max on my bullet 17vee right now and its awsome
Right now it has a 26 big ear chopper. Still looking to build my prop collection. I want to try a Trophy next.
@@TNels I will say that my favorite prop of all time was a lightly worked performance propeller 26" Yamaha drag copy. It ran amazing on 2 of my Hydrostream's, my STV, and a old low profile ski boat I had (19' CeeBee Avenger).
It had phenomenal holeshot and acceleration with great handling!
Just wanted to throw that out there.
Oh, and I also ran a extra cupped 22" big ear chopper that was amazing with the 2.0 liter I had, as well as with the 2.4's and 2.5's I built after the 2 liter. Since these motors can be spun some pretty high RPM's reliabily it was a really good performer for every situation..
@@BabyCharlotteschannel I'm building my prop collection haha. Picking up a 24 Trophy tomorrow. I've read the Yamaha drags run well, also looking at an ET at some point.
Jackplate, nosecone,14x24 chopper, hold on tight 70++
I was shocked the old 2.0 could turn a 26. Got it just over 70. The ProMax pushes it over 90 now.
At 66 mph it looks like it starts to chine walk. We’re you able to stop that? Had a 75 Glaston CV 16 that would chine walk at 55 mph with a 115 Mercury and speed prop.
Hi, Steve. Yes I was able to get the chine walk under control. This was the very first weekend I had the boat in the water. It turns out the lower unit had worked itself loose over the weekend and was a major cause of the chine walk.
If you look at a few of my newer videos you'll see I gained the experience to counter the chine walk with steering inputs. The boat still wants to do it depending on prop/speed/load, but it is much more controllable. I've found recently running over 90mph it likes an extra 50lbs in the far port side of the rear to stay balanced on the pad. Those old Glastrons were cool boats! My uncle had a CVX18 bow rider I/O.
I love it but what's that thru hub prop all about? Let the bass boats have all those things.
This thing does double duty as a ski boat as well.
water pump working? do not see a stream at the back go the motor?
It was working. The clamshell cowls aim it almost straight out the back.
Beautiful boat what year is the motor and has it been worked? I have almost the same motor mine is a 1978 mercury 175
Thank you! Motor is a 78 to the best of my knowledge. But the cowls are 80. Nothing done to it, its bone stock and I think a bit worn out. Everyone I talked to said I should've been able to get more speed out of it.
@@TNels I thought I saw it turning 6300 rpm is that correct I would love to put a low water pickup on mine
@@chrismarcrom4288 I think it would run out of steam right around there. Couldn't get it to turn much higher even though lots of people said it should go 7k. I added a Bobs cone to mine.
I miss my viper... should have never sold it.
Edit *** filmed in Mexico****. Where the speed limit isn’t 55 on the lakes
Yes, Mexico haha
@Cale Phillips yeah most lakes around here are a 55mph limit. But I ignore those signs on the freeway, why would I care on the water? Haha
those back seats blow. flip it! ha.
They always flipped around with the originals.
What is the app/software you are using to display GPS speed and Gforge on the video? Awesome restoration!
That’s all from a GoPro. Any 5 black or newer has GPS.
@@TNels wow I have a 5 black edition and I did not even know that! Thanks for sharing and keep on doing great videos
@@VWAlexo yeah, when you load into the GoPro quick software you can click to turn on gauges. You’ll need to have the gps active on the camera when shooting video though.
@@TNels excellent I’ll give that a try!
Which lake is that ? Rice ?
This is West Rush.
Drive thru the wobble, working the steering wheel to counter it, ,run it up to 80 + mph
Had it up to 90 yesterday.
Beautiful boat.. and a great build... I had the same boat in the 80s.. 1980 that is... that chine walk is a bitch... looks like you might be a little low in the motor mount.. balancing the boat on pad is a skill , kind of like a tight rope walker...
You'll get it... just remember little short counter steering..like little jabs.. not just right and left buy more like jab jab jab.....
Thanks! I'm getting the hang of the walk now.
How fast will she run in reverse, lol. Cool boat
Not very fast. Starts coming over the transom pretty quick haha.
I've been watching every one of your videos on this hydra stream you've been restoring man you did a beautiful job on this boat just a beautiful boat got a lower man I see you got a 175 on it once you get used to that you need to go ahead and drop a 300 on that or 350 matter of fact go ahead with Mercury's big one and put that big old 450 on the back of it it'll handle it you only live once go really f****** fast great f****** job on this boat I mean beautiful boats
What model is that?
This is a Viking, later years are known as a V-King.
Looks like sand lake
Again just damn dude!! You had me giggling and laughing!! Fuckin A man!! Wanna do my voyager core lol. Miss river rat myself. Well used to be 😢
Thank you! Not really looking to do another boat now. Gotta get to all the stuff I put off the last two years haha
@@TNels I get it bro!! Very sweet!! You should be very proud!!
@@steveturnerii8187 Thanks agin! I'm pretty proud of it. Got a few little things planned for it over winter.
It s better if you mount a surface chopper propeller 22/24 p
This combo ran best with a 26big ear chopper.
Que Dios bendiga a los Estados Unidos de América
Did you take factory hook out of bottem .flatten
Out pad. Much better handling, race for factory in 70 80s lived in Minnesota
To my knowledge there was no hook on a Viking/Vking bottom like the Viper and Vector had. My pad is dead flat.
@@TNels pad may flat, but run a straight edge on bottem for 6 feet forward, When boat is pulled from mold on chop layed boats before they cure fully they shrink to a concave upward. We had to flip and straight even hand layed race boat layups much less production boats.
