  • In today’s driving lesson with Erin we started on dual carriageways and slip roads, how to enter and exit safely. Changing lanes on the carriageway as well as maintaining your speed to keep up with traffic.
    The main objective today was to be able to slow down from 30mph and gear down leading up to junctions.
    Erin made great progress in todays lesson.
    Thank you all for your continued support

    Erin has some social anxiety, that coupled with driving, and having to take in instructions and information from Aman can't be easy, but she does it brilliantly. She's such a serene person, with an amazing attitude.

    • @silversaturns
      @silversaturns Год назад +11

      This is my problem as well, I have social anxiety of my own and then the driving really adds to that stress, especially when I make a mistake that frustrates my instructor lol and yes the information overload sometimes can be quite rough. There's no way I can remember everything my instructor says, if he says 10 things my brain will retain like half of them and the other half he'll have to remind me again at some point lol

    • @cnsmooth
      @cnsmooth Год назад +2

      @@silversaturns That's why videos like this are great, as you can watch them in the comfort of your own home and think though what you might do in a similar situations.
      Also with something like social anxiety, it takes repetition to learn some things to the point where you are not consciously thinking about it and getting "brain freeze". Someone with social anxiety might take longer to master the skill of driving as a result but there is nothing wrong with that (i.e. dont put pressure on yourself)...other than it being a bit more expensive to get your licence.

    • @silversaturns
      @silversaturns Год назад +1

      @@cnsmooth I know, my instructor says that I am already a good driver but my reflexes are too slow at times. Unfortunately I think that can only be fixed with more hours behind the wheel really, there's nothing much else to do there. I have my test in a couple days so I'm quite nervous right now (add performance anxiety on top of social anxiety lol) but thanks for your kind words!

    • @cnsmooth
      @cnsmooth Год назад +2

      Yeah I mean some of this is just having enough practice to be able to get used to what is being asked. Knowing to change gears isn't something that you consciously think about at first but over time it becomes second nature, same as coasting and not stalling. Having to have so much info thrown at you whilst you are trying to absorb the feel of driving is overwhelming and I get why Aman does it, but sometimes and with some people explaining things will only help so much. I have a similar issue at my new job. If I don't get a (physical) task done correctly, my boss and colleagues will tell and question me on the theory behind the task and why it is important. The problem is, is that I know the theory inside out, and more often than not can tell them things they might have forgotten over the years, however having that knowledge doesn't help you do the physical task any easier, and at times it seems pointless and condescending.
      Lol sorry went on a rant there.

      @@cnsmooth lol exactly! I know what I'm supposed to do in my head and I am sure I would figure it out too if I was driving by myself, but when you have an instructor pressing you on do the thing RIGHT NOW and it requires a bunch of quick passages, it just gets confusing even if you've done it a bunch of times before rip

    Erin's journey has been super useful to follow, I've just recently completed an intense driving course (around 30 hours in 6 days) but as we're moving through the topics so fast, I haven't had much time to practice everything. In particular, I had struggled with when to gear change down as you don't have those same audio cues so it was more important to be aware of which speed for which gears. I had moved on to slip roads on to national speed limit dual carriageways as well as tackling roundabouts but as my approach was always lagging behind, I couldn't get the thinking time to think "how am I going to tackle this roundabout" and so just struggled a bit - sorting out the basics around clutch control, gear changes and speed management helped massively with the rest of it.

But if I could offer a wee tip, don't be afraid to apply the brake without putting the clutch down, get the car at the speed you want and then put the clutch down and select the matching gear.
