Hello! My name is Brady Swanson. You performed two spine surgeries on me nearly 10 years ago. I think I was one of your first patients! At the time I was living in so much pain, and I was young when you did the surgery on me. 20! Your kind words, and attentive nature always made me feel comfortable with going forward with the procedures. It was tough to make the call to get the surgeries, but I trusted you. You always showed me kindness and were there with me. I have gone on to recover from the surgeries, and the spine injury and have lived a very active and fulfilling live. Now 30, I've cycled across America, Taught Skiing in California, and New Zealand. I've become a schoolteacher, and have lived a very active life. Thank you for the kindness you showed me 10 years ago. Your videos have been so wonderful, and your voice sounded so familiar. I'm so happy for you. Always,
    -Brady Swanson

This video…wow. I believe it’s the most important episode so far. I’d like to respond to some things you mentioned. Firstly, you chose the right life partner. Some would say, myself included, it’s a decision more important than selecting a career path. You also took the necessary steps to get yourself away from a career that was ruining your health and sense of wellbeing. Another solid decision…you can trust yourself! Secondly, you mentioned therapy. Do it. It may take a few tries to find someone that fits you best. Don’t get discouraged. Someone specializing in giftedness, highly sensitive people, neurodivergent folks, trauma informed therapy-great place to start. Finally, if you could marry your education, training, and experience with your creative expression talents would it look like what you’re doing right now? Absolutely! So, perhaps you didn’t make a mistake after all. It’s all a part of your incredible story. Dr. Goobie, you haven’t let the 17yr old version of yourself down. You are the person you were meant to become, and you will continue to do outstanding work. You’re doing it now! You are a teacher who has a unique communication style that resonates with just about everyone. That’s why your following is huge!
Thank you for sharing more of your soulful wisdom with us. You may have told us your name, but I think you’ll always be Dr. Goobie now. I hope you’re good with that. Please give Doobie some extra love from her fan in the Midwest ❤.

I have also seen people who chose to follow their youthful dreams of becoming artists, and who then later on in life lament that they could never financially afford to build the life they wanted. Each decision comes with consequences, but we can only see the problems we have, not the ones we never encountered.

    • @danavarrone
      @danavarrone Месяц назад +62

yes, but the difference there is that they pursued what they wanted to do in life, and just didnt get compensated financially for it. Rather than follow someone elses dream and get a higher paying job, they chose to pursue the path of self fulfillment over the path of financial fulfillment. Each of these paths have their own set of pros and cons, there is no one perfect way to live. You just have to find whatever you think will make you the most content personally, not whatever may pay more or what everyone else is doing.
Those people you talk about may have regrets like everyone else, but I wonder if they think they would have been happier settling for something else. Infantilizing them by calling their choices "youthful dreams" is quite telling. There is as much value in art as there is in any other field. Pursuing art is a brave thing, not a childish one. If we only had scientists, engineers, and mathmaticians, we would have one hell of an apathetic and colorless world; certainly not a place I would want to live. The world needs art, and it needs artists. To place them at a lower station in life is ignorant and elitist.
To become an artist, sacrifices need to be made the way you would just like any other passionate career. Do some people regret those sacrifices? I'm sure they do. But choosing a career you love and not being financially compensated for it seems infinitely better than forcing yourself into a career you hate and being paid well for it. The video youre commenting on is proof of that. Everyone has their own values, just find yours before the regrets catch up to you and you have nothing.

You might consider that there are people who made the choice to pursue their dream rather than a conventional path who now regret that decision. Although it’s easy to romanticize such a choice and the life lived pursuing one’s passion, the truth is that the majority of people who take such a path end up many years later having sacrificed much - earning potential and savings, social status, the pride of being a productive member of society, the trappings of a more conventional life - with little to show for it. And many of us look at people like yourself with great envy: you were practical, you chose a lucrative profession where you could be of use and do great good for people, and by which you command the love and respect of your fellow people. Perhaps it’s a “grass is always greener” story.

I’ve found that the most intelligent capable introspective people can sometimes become their worst enemy simply because of how they measure and remeasure and weigh options and want to make the best decision because they don’t want to let themselves down but in that same process are letting themselves down.
The Alchemist is a wonderful book if you haven’t read it. I know it gets a lot of hype but I’ve reread the book many times and it always seems to hard reset my over thinking and remeasuring decision making process. It gives me perspective to be able to trust myself again. The dots only connect when looking backwards.

I took the other path when I was 18. I have 0 regrets, however I cannot help but wonder what could have happened if I chose a more lucrative path. Philosophy programs are filled with lovely, noble people, but also very pretentious and rude! Society treats you as useless and job prospects are terrible. Being unemployed is a reality many philosophers face daily.

Frost's "The Road Not Taken" has to be the most misinterpreted poem of all time, not surprising as Frost was often cryptic. Apparently it was only in jest when he said taking the road less traveled "made all the difference". It was a reference to a close neighbor/acquaintance who labored over every single decision. Basically, as I read it, an inside joke which has for most people been interpreted in the opposite way (ie that taking the other path actually made a huge difference). As you say, it's largely a matter of perspective and "grass is greener" thinking.

My wife and I are following through on our promise, though, as our two kids are attending college at the same time, in major, expensive cities on opposite coasts, no less. The good news is that we are accomplishing it even after spending our entire lives outside the rat race. But, my old friends who are in the rat race are having an easier time paying for the kids' schooling. That's pretty much the only downside I've experienced. Everything else is so much better.

That’s what all the smart kids around me were doing, so I just followed along. But once I got through college and started working, it hit me hard: this wasn’t it. I felt so lost, so fake.
Thankfully, while I was in college, I discovered my love for fitness. During COVID, I finally had enough and decided to quit my job to pursue personal training and fitness coaching. Sure, I’m not making as much money as I did before, but in my heart, I know I’m growing. I’ve learned so much about myself and worked through fears I never thought I’d overcome.
That said, I still feel guilty sometimes-knowing my parents invested so much in my education and supported me through it all. But I chose to start over, and I’m hopeful that one day, I’ll make them proud of the path I’ve taken. Unfortunately, being Asian parents, they probably won’t understand until I’m making enough money lol.

I’m 34 and have suffered my whole life living with almost a survivors guilt over traumatic surgeries I had as a child. Hearing your story reaffirms the things I have discovered about myself when I look at what’s under the hood. I hope you have a good day and I wanted to thank you for sharing your story!

Hi there. I really appreciate your transparency in all of this! I hope these videos help you move on from the struggles you have faced in the past. I think RUclips is an amazing to hear people's honest experiences about things--the good, the bad, and the ugly. And its crucial that young people are aware of this as they choose careers.
I also appreciate the honest medical advice you give--where you seriously try to tackle common causes of common medical issues. Wishing your channel a bright future :)

The broken soul and not listening to the heart is a sickness so many people have without often knowing it. I spent a lot of time in nature doing what is now called Wild Grieving...connecting to nature to alleviate deep grief and mental pain. I recently listened to my heart and self published a book of nature poetry called Hemlock Flowers. I feel so much joy having done this. I hope my words touch people who read it. You are reaching and touching so many people and your words are healing. You are healing yourself and others. Thank you for being an inspiration and a motivation to others.❤

what people don't realize is that emotional trauma and wounding expresses as mental and physical chronic un-wellness. it takes a lot to face the first massive waves when the dam breaks and most run away into capitalist-pleasure coping mechanism but it becomes an inauthentic life and it becomes a loop that ends either - face it or wanting to end it all.

Jonathan, I have a son who quitted his collage in 2019, afterwards he started his business about 3 years, then his girl friend left him, his business was lost control, he hated himself a lot, cried many times, he got confused for the goal of the life, after some therapy, he got back to the college, but he lost the interest in engineer, suddenly of all, he changed his major to biology and planning to apply medical school next year, he is working hard for Gmat ,working hard for keeping all A's , also some researching.......the reason why he chose medicine, the only reason is to help more people. My worrying is if in the future , if he felt he can not really help people as a doctor, just like your current situation , that's going to be really worst scenario. As a mom, I really he can have a goal of the life and be happy to work with the goal of helping others. God bless you and my son , and all the people in this world.

I wish you had seen a therapist. Your wife was, in fact, encouraging you to be self-reflective which is essential in the depth perspective you now are working on. it sounds like that was not part of your family structure. I imagine, as with many 1st and 2nd generation immigrant families, their focus was on the bottom rung of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Your wife knew about rung 3 or 4. Now you are trying to sit w self-actualización, which is a wonderful and confusing experience.
I grew up in poverty and alcoholism … but one quality my mother had that I am forever grateful for was curiosity, which enabled me to enter therapy in my early 20’s. In my late thirties I graduated from a grad program in clinical psychology. At 80 I am still working and enjoying looking under my own ‘hood’ as you say, and supporting others in that venture. I am going to continue following you in your internal adventure. Blessings.

At 20 I realized that i have started to hate myself and did so so deeply. Your story brings me to tears for how relevant it is to my personal life. I think you helped me a bit in uncovering these emotions that have burried so deep inside me, and seeding a little hope within me to do over again when im done with my current degree.

I wish you well doctor and hope you find peace and happiness for all your years of service !

That would be a great thing for so many people! I’ve been down the medical rabbit hole with so many different things, and now my brother just found out he has bladder cancer, he will not listen to anything about energy healing or something like it. I finally talked him into trying a castor oil wrap, I don’t know how much it will help at this point, but I guess it’s a start.
I don’t know how to talk to him about any of it because he is so locked into this world and I know I can’t say too much. I don’t even know how to explain some medical things without biting my tongue. ❤

I am a westerner living in Singapore for many years where parents have deeply held beliefs that academic success is the key to everything (including making the parents look good). To the point where the needs of the child come second to servicing their future potential from a v young age. I wondered how lifting and shifting that mindset into the west would manifest itself. Maybe this has had some influence here and self awareness has started to dismantle it. Either ways he is courageous. I wish this chap all the best.
