  • I just completed a no-damage-taken run at Slave Knight Gael on NG+ using a katana. Previously, I completed a run on NG using the twin blades. At the time, I thought I would be unable to do it with a weaker weapon, but I decided to take up the challenge. In this video, I overlay my recording with my thoughts on what makes this fight so phenomenal. I hope you enjoy!

I don't know how to phrase this but, the fight against Gael felt special compared to the straight forward fight against Midir where all you had to do was learn the simple pattern. I totally agree with you on this video and keep up the great work , I love how you present your thoughts

I absolutely love tragedy writing it’s my favorite form of writing. Radahn, Ludwig, Gwyn, Gherman, Gael, and Artorias are all highly tragic characters. Seeing them all feral and insane is really sad, every single one of them used to be a a normal human just like you and me. But the story of the world they’re in has twisted them and turned them into monsters. I have a fondness for feral warriors who’s screams of anger and aggression, loss of mind, and them not running but crawling towards you on all fours like Gael. Like animals. They emphasize just how lost they are, but examples like Artorias still to this day killing the abyss corrupted residents of Oolacile still show he’s somewhere in there. Gael and Ludwig in their phase 2 standing up on two legs regaining humanity but not enough to reason with them. Who knew the simple action of standing on two legs could carry so much emotion.
All of these factors make for masterful writing and exceptionally compelling characters. I am a writer and I take heavy inspiration from Fromsoft for tragedy not just these bosses but mostly for my characters like Ian pronounced (eye-in). Not to get to into detail but he was a kid who always wanted to be a warrior his entire life and he got that wish. He rised the ranks of a kingdoms army and became the greatest warrior in the entire world. He made all other previous greatest warriors look like jokes. He broke peoples swords in half, he mowed his way through armies, He had up to 10 arrows at a time poking out of his body, but he still fought. This guy was a monster. Until the day where he didn’t just kill an entire army of enemy forces but he than turned to his own troops and slaughtered them all decapitating every single one of them. Ian was not a great warrior, he didn’t kill army’s, he didn’t survive fatale wounds, he never truly fought either. Before he ever even got into his first battle when he was, but 17 years old a demon posing as a Vir (angel). Met Ian in his dream and promised him protection on battlefields and battle rage that would induce an unprecedented amount of adrenaline in his body. It’s tragic because you know the truth of Gwyn you also know the truth of Artorias they lost themselves long long ago and are not what the legend say they are. And just imagine all the other people who look up to Artorias or pray to Gwyn never knowing who they look up to truly is.

Not the most complex boss design or gameplay wise, but in general the most fun for me,
I could fight him for hours on end and never get bored

He’s like an ER boss meaning all his attacks differ depending on your position relative to the boss, but he’s worse as a lot of the position based attacks are inconsistent maybe because of the arena but he feels unfinished and needs a bit of tweaking.
But everything other than the mechanics of this fight is perfect the story, music, and cutscenes, he’s similar to Ludwig but he’s an actual decent boss fight instead of a literal punching bag lol, although he’s a bit too easy on NG, on NG+7 he one shots regardless of armour and takes no damage lol.

What makes Gael so good imo is the strafes and baiting attacks that you can do, I would highly recommend watching le carbonators no sprint no roll Gael and trying some of them out!

Thanks I'll check that out! I'm working to incorporate strafes more, but it's pretty new to me. I only realized embarrassingly late into my souls journey how powerful it is, so I'm still getting my sea legs 😂

where gael disappointed me is in the fact that he's too easy once you learn his moveset, the devs wanted it to be a decent fight but with the spectacle that he provides, i think he shouldve been much harder to beat as a boss. They fixed this in the sekiro with the Isshin Sword Saint bossfight, it is both spectacular and much harder to beat. They went even further with malenia in that manner which gives unparalleled satisfaction when i beat that boss

I get that. I think it's just a subjective matter of what factors weigh more heavily for each player. As I mentioned in another video, I find that his learnability is far outweighed by his positive attributes, which puts it at the top for me even after many, many playthroughs.

When you learn any boss' move set it is easy. Doesn't matter how difficult or easy it is.

@@Overweight_elephant im definitely talking about the learning curve here..i beat gael in 6try with my strength build, while it took me more around 45tries to beat isshin..still havent build malenia second phase...besides it my personal opinions if it doesn't match with yours it's fine no need to try to educate me on this , i find it funny how everyone stars defending fictional beings as if it's their family member

Gael is great but definitely overrated. His fight is very basic, which isn't a bad thing but is outclassed by other fights gameplay wise. I wish he was a bit more difficult, Gael represents the struggle of mankind, I wish we could actually have that struggle *against him.* His attacks would have to be less telegraphed since his current state is very easy to dodge, its pretty much all reactive with not much more to it. Its fun and intuitive but Fromsoft have definitely stepped up in gameplay and boss design since, not just having the whole boss revolve around dodging. All that aside Gael is a great spectacle, his lore is really fun and his themes are great. I love his music and I think all around he's pretty amazing, though not perfect.

I agree he's less complex than some other end-game bosses FS have produced! I do think he's probably my favorite in DS3, and I generally don't mind the simplicity if I find it engaging, which I do in this fight. Fights like Isshin and Radagon are also among my favorites, and they're way more complicated, so they're fun in different ways. It's awesome to be able to pick and choose what kind of fight you want by switching back and forth but still knowing that you're gunna have an equally great experience in the moment :)
