@Julian Müller • vor 32 Jahren I thought people with ADHD struggles with planning ahead. That is why they are very unorganize, always late, and do everything last minute. They function in stimulant and the now or present. They don’t have foresight or the ability to predict and plan for the future.

I've had maybe 150-200 jobs in my life, everything from shoe sales, warehouse, assembly, security, small engine tech, car stereo installer, speaker builder /engineer , stocker, truck driver and self employed. The job that stuck and is not on this list is Truck driver. I've been consistent since 2012 as a driver because it's always different, exciting new scenery and can pay way more than any of these jobs listed. Starting may be $60k but if you own a truck from $150-300k a year. It's risky exciting and fun. Please put this on the list sir 🤠

Part of my first position in Information Technology was coordinating and managing critical incidents in a large company. I followed procedures, some of which I created, contacted the appropriate engineers and stakeholders, coordinated two conference calls and kept 25,000 employees informed, all while driving the incident towards resolution. I loved the adrenaline and dopamine!

I read somewhere that ADHD may be an evolutionary adaptation from when humans started to form communities. Some early humans had the task of watching out for predators when the rest of the community was vulnerable. In simple terms, they were lookouts .
If this is the case, ADHD may also be extremely beneficial to combat sports (MMA, kickboxing, boxing, jujitsu, wrestling, etc) and security related jobs such as the airforce, military, police or office guards.
Fun fact: Jon "Bones" Jones (one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time) says he has ADHD.

I used to tell myself in my inner voice that I had feelings like a watchdog from time to time, this is the first time I'm telling this to someone else. When it comes to ADHD, everything in my feelings becomes whole. But I have never had a position in my life that required this. I feel bad when some feelings seem irrelevant to my life.

I’m in Horeca currently, so here’s my take on working there with ADHD.
Avoid being a front desk clerk or housekeeper at all costs.
A waiter is decent, because you can easily outperform most others with your awareness of everything that happens around you and the ridiculous speed in which you can do tasks that are well known. Just look for event, catering, banquet and very busy places, not a cozy cafe or a hotel.
Same goes for event logisticians or fair/expo builders. There’s some planning involved, but it’s a very physical job, with constantly changing environments and a lot of short, stressful situations. If you’re easily irritated by imperfection, the tasks of arranging and decorating might suit you well - you just can’t unsee that the front desk isn’t in line with that bloody brand wall behind it!
Now for cooks/ chefs: it’s incredibly fast paced and the sense of accomplishment after a busy phase is better than drugs. Well, most chefs consume drugs, cigarettes or at least loads of caffeine. Avoid calm workplaces like nursery homes, factory, office and school catering and places that impose a lot of strangling rules on the lower ranks. Also, being a chef includes quite a degree of precision, at least in trade school and in fine dining. Until you can cut 2 kg of equally sized carrot julienne without focusing on it, you will mess up a lot and hate yourself for it. Either make it a game to be more precise every time, or look for a position where nobody minds the stuff being slightly “rustic”. When I was bored during my shift manager job in refugee catering, I helped the chef and “casually” diced 30 kg of cucumbers - not perfectly even, but at lightning speed, it was what mattered there.
Shift leader. Be it in fast food places, logistics teams or as a first waiter, this is great. Splitting your mind in ten different sections to keep track of your task and the team goals is really fun and as long as there’s no numbing routine, it’s good stress. Just be aware that having to lead extremely stupid, lazy or otherwise unbearable people can trigger your irritability and make you a bad leader because you lose your temper. Also, regular duties like documentation and all the stuff that happens outside of opening hours might be so boring and repetitive that you’ll slip errors. Don’t be the guy that keeps a bunch of mouldy veggies in the fridge, can’t be bothered to clean the drain weekly or forgets to lock the storage door. Don’t be me. 😂 you might want to have loads of coloured checklists.
Event or project manager. Be it in catering, trade fairs or corporate, this is fun. You can use creativity, do things your own way and be your own boss for 80% of the time. Lots of phone calls, sometimes driving around, and electrifying situations when your project is taking place. Also, lots of planning ahead (don’t be overwhelmed!!!), and some amount of infuriating admin junk like calculations, bills, permits, estimations and documentations. But also a lot of improvisation, a moderate sales aspect and good-ish pay, often with project related boni. Catering, sports/music events or trade fairs is to be preferred over corporate event management.
Restaurant manager. Danger zone - lots of routine, lots of admin, but also you have to improvise quickly, think like an entrepreneur and perform well under stress. Never worked in this position so this one is short.
Economist (hotel, travel agency, multi venue restaurant company, etc). Never worked there myself either. Less practical, lots of staring onto a screen, some amount of “admin” related stuff. Also, potential for improving the efficiency of processes, recruiting, having to deal with architects, interior designers and other contractors, and marketing. There’s some niches adhd people could outperform others in and have fun (well it’s the same for us), but they’re rare - you’ll be an “armchair pooper” while all the service and culinary staff are right where the action is. Maybe marketing or strategy/ consulting might be good.
Little add-on: Chefs, logisticians, the „shit jobs“ and project managers are normally very open to train loads of profanity, edgy jokes and energetic music, if guests, clients and sometimes supervisors are not around. Yes, I felt compelled to add this because it helps a lot with repetitive and frustrating situations or stress.
Hope I was able to help some here (:

I have ADHD and have been an emergency dispatcher for police/fire/medical for 10 years, 5 of those in a training role and made $60K last year. I'm good at my job, but I hate it. The pay isn't worth the politics, the stress, the crap you have to put up with from the public, or some of the horrible things you'll hear on the phone. If you're thinking about a career in this field, I would urge you to think of doing something else. It sucks being told you have to come in early or stay late, or you that you can't get your son's birthday off, or be home with the family on a holiday. Don't do it. Not worth it. I'm resigning as soon as I find something else. I hope you all have an incredible day.

The constant contact with different people and switching between tasks works very well for me and it’s also perfectly available for students, since there is no previous experience required.
Also I worked in data entry and while that by itself isn’t all too interesting, it can be done while watching shows, podcasts or just random youtube videos and there’s not much to mess up and I get to set my own times, so that’s pretty nice.
Also the hourly pay can go up to 50+€ per hour, so that’s kinda nice

I am curious if data analyst should be on this list as often times we are flat out ignored by management when we speak since we are so easily misunderstood and surely being in a job that has us constantly speaking to management cannot be healthy for this exact reason? To further this stance I knew 2 coworkers and myself who all held and still hold ADHD and all 3 of us had the exact same interpretation from the data which we brought to management to be promptly ignored only to see everything happen exactly as we said it would like clockwork which brings us back to how is it healthy to have easily misunderstood people in data analyst positions?

Maybe not as prestigious, although it should be, but really important for society and a lot of action, while kids being just as chaotic and creative as you are. omg mate, this phrase defines me 100% "My dream would be to become a serial entrepreneur, think an ideas developer, and in a couple of months start another one...
I am 40 years, I opened my t-shirt business very special 3 years ago (no is closed), 4 months developing the idea, I can tell you it has been the best time in my life, and when I made it I wanted to do another one.... I would give you a huge right now because I am like you 100% in this aspect...
Changing the topic and making a reflection,
I am also thinking to start to learn UX, because you can deep into the idea and User experience, but thinking in the future job about it, I think always appeared the same issue,
You are going to have issues even if you work for someone as UX and you have to follow the rules about how to do things,
I can tell you a silly example, we can not work in a coffee shop with a boss telling you how to manage the shop(in two weeks you are bored), but we can be very happy having our own coffee shop and being creative doing whatever you want.

    • @BlueEyedSexyPants
      @BlueEyedSexyPants 8 месяцев назад

@@gabrijelapodrzaj7135 I'm a software developer with ADHD, too, and I do have a suggestion for this: Don't study. Build stuff.
The dopamine hit of making cool shit is way better for the way we learn than studying theory or materials. Build as many new, different things as you can, and you'll find that you have to learn all the stuff you'll need along the way.
There are disadvantages to this style of learning: They won't give you a degree for learning that way. Certain jobs have gatekeeping requirements that still require you to study esoteria unrelated to the work you'll do. You'll still have to do boring stuff from time to time, and the more skilled you get, the more easy, boring stuff there is. Also, as you become more skilled, the complexity of projects you need to build to get the same dopamine hit will increase, which means more time, focus, and planning is required to build them, so you'll need new strategies.
BUT if you're goal is to become a great developer, building is way more fun and rewarding way to learn than studying.

One thing I'd add is that it very much depends on your personality type as well. I have moderate ADHD, but I'm naturally an introvert so sales wouldn't be ideal for me. Could I do it and maybe even be quite successful at it? Yes, we're quite good at playing the extrovert when we need to. But it would just be too draining to be sustainable long-term --for me. It could be great for others, and the performance based compensation definitely playa a huge role in that.
That being said you've definitely hit the nail on the head for us more withdrawn adhd'ers as well. I work as an entrepreneur in the accountancy/tax consulting field. Hated the job when I worked for someone else, now that I run my own show I find it quite satisfying. Actually planning to do some more schooling in data science so I can add analytics as a service my company offers! :D

Worked on assembly line processes for 3 years, I'm able to stuff the parts I need to into cars 1000 times a day , 16 seconds at a time. I've developed niche skills, never been able to apply my talents or learn anything. Only brain rot. When I do become hyperfocused or produce inspiring thoughts, they're washed away by the motions. My only regret is not being able to write my thoughts down while working (I sneak my thoughts onto a pocket notebook if I'm able.. most of the time I'm not so lucky and I forget the thought for forever) I love my brain and wish I could build off of my own thoughts. When I do make it home from the factory shift, I have nothing in order. My only vice is to repeat mistakes. In the end I won't be myself if I continue this way, distracted until the very end.

Whether you’re a classroom teacher doing all subjects or a middle/high school teacher teaching one or two subjects but with different groups, every 45-60min your brain is moving to something new. And no two days are the same. Ever.
      One word of...caution? Advice?
