exactly. if u have focus issues and distractability, that's what you have. it's common in this generation especially, it can be from mental health issues. (the "ADHD is getting more common" side has some points in this; because many people who exhibit focus issues don't actually have it, i really agree with the productivity point at the end and the fact that ADHD medication is so accessible, is actually an issue)
but the numerous ways, all this objective data that adds up to it to create a uniquely individual learning style and neurodivergent patterns that directly affect behavior and control issues (due to neurotransmitter differences).... that is ADHD, and it manifests so broadly.

Yeah, I was diagnosed at age 6 and was fully aware of my ADHD, but didn't become aware of more than the basic, most well known symptoms until high school. So I knew it made it difficult for me to focus and get work done without my meds, that my hyperactivity led to me talking a lot and impulsively, and that my sensory issues were related, but in middle school I would be in my accommodations meetings saying things like, "Yeah my ADHD makes it hard, but I also have problems because I procrastinate and manage my time poorly". I didn't understand at the time that those were just additional symptoms of ADHD 😅

I don't like how they didn't talk about how ADHD as a neurological issue, and not just a "social construct." It is a neurological chemical imbalance which is why medicine remedies those deficiencies by adding norepinephrine to regulate our blood pressure, increase arousal/attention etc. Unmedicated, I will literally do so many things that I will crash, and when I do one *thing* for the day, I will get so exhausted that I will need to go back to sleep because my neurons are firing off incorrectly. It is also feeling incredibly anxious around people, and being hyper aware of what you're saying,.. It is even losing your temper and getting SO SO angry, perhaps violent, because of the emotion dysregulation. It's also feeling really overstimulated by loud noises, smells, certain textures! Also.. the hyperfixation on our special interests while neglecting our bodily needs to eat, sleep, rest.. for hours. Also don't even get me started on being able to clean your room, or to pick up after yourself. It's trying as hard as you can to be tidy, but getting frustrated that you forget things!
IT is SO MUCH MORE than not being able to focus at school.

I got diagnosed after a really bad semester in school and the psychiatrist was like “woah, how’ve you been coping all this time 😦”. I was disappointed in my family but coming from a developing country I couldn’t blame them too much. I was mostly relieved to experience focus and motivation. I told my parents and they said “my son does not have ADD, my son does not have mental health issues” and that kinda hurt. To this day I’m still in therapy and medicating my ADD without my parents’ knowledge and I’m crushing it. They’re proud, I’m happy, and I’ll carry this lie to the grave lol

The girl who talked about she did totally fine until college basically told my story. I also didn’t get diagnosed until I was 30. I was a model student until college because thats when you have to manage your OWN schedule: every minute of the day is not planned for you. I went from an honors student to a girl who dropped classes and got her first D ever in her life. My dorm room was such a mess I wouldn’t dare subject a roommate to that : and so I became isolated, depressed, and only barley functional. I went to therapy. I went to doctors. Nobody diagnosed me because I was “smart”

I have sever ADD. It’s hard for me to talk about. I was always SO ashamed that I couldn’t just focus. In elementary school I had a teacher fired because she grabbed me by my face and screamed at me. I don’t remember what she said, and I felt a little guilty that she got fired because of me. The level of anxiety that comes with ADD is unreal. It’s the worst when I’m trying to sleep. Most of the time I try and got to bed at 9 but it’s 12 or 2 am by the time I finally lay down and stop moving. And I’ll lay down at 9 but constantly get up and do stuff or pace. It’s really exhausting when people tell you “your just making excuses” or “I have ADHD, your just lazy, I don’t let it be an excuse”. I HATE being this way. I’m lazy during the day and full of energy at night. It’s an exhausting wild life. Not to mention all the addiction I went through later in life when I couldn’t keep up with the doctors on my own. Now I’m unmedicated because I literally can’t keep up with the doctors and everyday life. I’ve recently lost my job so i moved off grid in the woods. I just can’t handle society and people anymore.

I got diagnosed with ADHD a couple of months ago along and mild OCD recently. As the years go by it feels like it's getting worse and when I reached out to my family they didn't get it. Luckily my school decided to have a therapist on campus and thats how I got to try my antidepressants out. I was nervous and scared because of all that I heard about them. My friends really helped me and still give me the support I couldn't get from my family and for that I'm super greatful. The meds really help make me feel okay and I haven't this genuinely okay in a long time it gave me a lot to think about.
My words to people who have unsupportive families is that there's always a community out there that will accept you for you. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your trusted friends or from a community that understands your struggles. There's hope to feel better all we have to do is keep moving forward, one step at a time. Take care

Finally a video on ADHD, I’ve been waiting for this! I feel It’s important to point out that this video barely scratches the surface of what having ADHD is like.
It affects all areas of a persons life, not just academically. Those with ADHD also have an increased risk of addiction, trauma and ptsd, anxiety and depression, as well as a large number of comorbidities. Not to mention a decreased life span compared to those without the condition!
I went 20 years undiagnosed and it wreaked havoc on my life. It really really pains me when people don’t understand how serious adhd can be and they assume it’s nothing more than having a few silly little traits like forgetfulness, hyperactivity or poor focus.

i was diagnosed with ADHD when i was 20 (junior year of college) and i relate so much. in high school i was a 4.0 student w hella extra curriculars, but procrastinated a lot when it came to getting work done. when i finally hit college and got my first Cs and Ds, it felt like it was something WRONG with me. when you finally learn that theres nothing wrong with you and that you learn differently, it's such a blessing. i was able to understand myself better and know what works for me in addition to medications. i went from having a 2.6 GPA sophomore year to a 3.9 my senior year, so if anyone reading this is in a similar situation, you're not alone!!!
it's also a huge reason i wanna become a psychiatrist too, bc i grew up w immigrant parents (which usually do not believe in mental health). it was more difficult to figure out what was going on with me bc i never had the confidence to discuss it

Yes, it is getting more recognition now due to societal changes, and, with some small margin of error, only the people who actually have it will receive a diagnosis. @@Random-sk6hm Hi!! In the U.S., we have something called a DSM and we are on the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) as of March 2022. In the U.K. the ICD (International Classification of Diseases) is used over the DSM. There are different 'qualifications' to be diagnosed with ADHD. For the ICD, from what I remember, you need to have more symptoms to be diagnosed with ADHD than the DSM. Because of that, the U.K. has a lower percentage of those diagnosed with ADHD and it makes people wonder if it's a culture thing, or if it's being pushed down by different societies/exceptions. But again, I do not know for sure since I did the research paper on it 2 years ago and I do not live in the U.K. But yeah, I hope this helps? :)

It's not only used in the UK but a lot of European countries too. It's weird because I remember this American person telling me about my own mental illness without having any qualifications to do so, and the way they discribed my mental illness wasn't the way I was thought about it, so I pointed out the differences in countries and cultures. I'm pretty sure they got confused with another similar disorder tho ahaha.

@@Random-sk6hm The US diagnoses it more easily than in the UK. For example, in the UK you can't be diagnosed with ADHD if you have childhood trauma or CPTSD, but in the US that doesn't disqualify you from getting an ADHD diagnosis. Also because mental health is so extremely underfunded and stretched thin in the NHS it is generally massively underdiagnosed in the UK because of how difficult it is to even get a professional assessment with a psychiatrist (which is the only person who can diagnose ADHD.)

It all started to break down when I started working in tech. In school I’d get things done, eventually, on my own time. I’d hyper focus on the subjects I found interesting- which was most of them, record lectures because i couldn’t focus in class.
But being in a meeting heavy, time boxed, quick turnaround engineering environment broke every coping mechanism and mask I had subconsciously built to manage adhd.

ADHD is definitely over diagnosed. It is not just about having a hard time focusing. It has to be to the degree that you can't manage your life. Not only that, but it is also disrupting your ability to succeed at school or work. Furthermore, it has to negatively affect your relationships with other people in all areas of your life. Like it doesn't bother me all the time, but if I'm having a really hard time it gets to me that I'm having to navigate this rough patch in life with a brain that constantly feels like I'm working against it. The fact their brains are hopping from one thing to another so fast and u can see it when they are asked the first 3 questions. EVERY TIME some of them move before the count down xD and i completely understand. its like, Directive -> move quick so u dont forget or loose track, Directive move quick so u dont forget or loose track... very in the moment thinking and easy to miss minor details even when repeated. I stuggle with that way of thinking all the time. If someone is explaining something to me, even at my job, i have to have a pen and paper or notes app open to write important details down NOW or I AM NOT going to remember it in 30 seconds. Brain sykes itself out when given long winded directions via phone call or general conversation and only remembers that "this info is importent now remember it!" then is so focused and stressed on remembering that you have missed what they said in the first place. I also struggle with object perminance.

ADHD has affected my entire life... from addiction and eating disorders to depression, to anxiety, to panic attacks. I was medically diagnosed at 19 and now that I'm 21 it feels like I'm always fighting myself every day (even with medication) there's so much to unlearn because it has affected my whole identity and self-esteem. There are endless things that come with ADHD like sensitivity rejection, mood swings, unstabilized relationships, ED's, addiction, poor money management, etc... I'm glad we're able to raise more awareness now, and hopefully, we are able to change the system that is not meant for us. I'm still on the journey of accepting it because to me it has been a curse and as much as I try to go with the flow, it alwasy ends up backfiring and it makes me hate myself even more because sometimes I just wish I had a "normal brain"... it's something that I'm still working on with my therapist. To anyone who feels the same way I do.. you're heard and we are more people struggling with the same problems! love to y'all!

I’ve grown to love my internal dialogue, I’m certainly not as bored, but it becomes overwhelming. I love that I’m creative but I hate that ADHD causes me to appear conceited by talking over someone accidentally because I’m afraid I’m going to forget my talking point or something. Now I try to write something down while I’m listening so I don’t speak over, but most people still get annoyed.

I was also diagnosed by someone who has adhd. Even though all signs pointed to me having it, it’s still crazy to think about. The way that I describe my ADHD to people that are like “oh I do that to” is that everything is very I extreme. Like either I’m super focus or super unfocus. I can’t stop moving or I can’t move. I want to eat it all or not at all. I’m in a all party mood or my skin is literally crawling and I’m about to start crying if I don’t get out of here. I will do 10 hw or no hw. I will write a 16 pages paper or Google all my answers. Is not like that with everything ofc, but most of the time I found myself drained because how drastic the changes are and how difficult is to find a balance

    • @andreavsc28
      @andreavsc28 Год назад

And like this are the things I call “normal” because it also happens with more dangerous things like health, money, addictions, social interactions, interest. The fact that I know everything can just change so quick and I have no control. The out of side out of mind thing, I don’t think people understand how extreme it can be. I forget about people I love, that don’t mean I don’t love them but if I don’t see them is very difficult for my brain to be like oh text that person. And the guilt of having adhd is the worst

But I was paralyzed in life without my medication and didn’t even realize it, and my diagnosis honestly made me adjust a ton of goals I set for myself. And I’m all the better for it! I would hate to struggle so much in my life just for what? To say I accomplished what I thought I wanted, when it’s completely changed now that I’ve got the tools to make me feel complete?

But all that is to say that having a neurological condition makes life harder, yes, but certain things we take on like flames to a candle. It’s all about fine tuning that ability to other things in life - which takes time, and may not always work, but that’s also okay! Progress isn’t always linear and we can’t beat ourselves up over it either. I’m def rambling but I hope you don’t worry too much over it. Any failures are just an opportunity to reassess what you really want, what went wrong, and how to move on to a better future for yourself ✨

But then again it really depends on the type of ADHD and social conditioning plays a part too. I'm a cis woman & I'm combined type, a lot of mine manifests the same as the stereotypical view of it - if they based my diagnosis on how they think women present differently I would probably get overlooked. I think it's better to view the traits as stereotypical & non stereotypical traits til people learn that the different types can manifest different in all genders

This video needs a redo with way better questions. ADHD is more than “I can’t pay attention,” which these questions all seem to focus on. ADHD is an neurodevelopmental cognitive disorder with particular emphasis in executive dysfunction, which encompasses working memory, emotional control, impulse control task initiation, flexible thinking, and organization. Please do more research on executive dysfunction, the diagnosis process, the mechanisms of how stimulant medications help those with ADHD, and the populations affected most.
“I have noticed my social, emotional, and impulsive tendencies are different from those around me.”
“I have had to justify my treatment to my friends, family, teachers, and community.”
“A cognitive evaluation by a neuropsychologist should be the standard of an ADHD diagnosis.”
“I find that cognitive behavioral therapy is more helpful than medication.”
“Executive dysfunction has impacted my life negatively.”
“I have found ways to manage parts of my executive dysfunction.”
