I was diagnosed, after x ray, with hip impingement. My right hip actually locked in place and I couldn't even lift my leg for over a month. I played goalie in ice hockey for many years and at 51 it has caught up with me.
Love your anatomical explanations. Don't know my diagnosis--this is the most frustrating part of my pain. Thanks for shedding light on the possible causes!!!
They basically ruled out joint mobilization. which works instantly to reduce pain and increase range of motion. And suggested using Cane and take kidney damaging medication. Great content.
Thank you!!! Was concerned I might have a hip impingement but thankfully(!!!) sounds more like it may be the hip flexor tendinitis you discussed (the flexor feels tense in hip area like in a guarding response...pain came out of nowhere as stood up after longtime sitting so would make sense)...what a relief!! Long time subscriber...you guys are terrific...thank you!
ANSWER: Hip impingement can happen for a number of reasons. If left untreated, the pain and other symptoms it causes may get worseas damage to the hip joint increases. ... Generally though, treatment options range from managing symptoms with medication and physical therapy in milder cases to surgery in more severe cases.
What would you suggest to alleviate the pain if I have it on both sides of my hip and I don't like taking pills or painkillers? Already been diagnosed with FAI, just looking for ways to take care of it while I wait for my surgery
Hello guys. Thanks for your great teaching you guys are awesome. I have Pain in the hip area that runs down the front of my leg to knee and then below to the ankle. I can not cross my right leg to a 90° angle only to a 45° because of tight muscles and a lot of pain. MRI and XRay are all good. The left side is good, cross my leg to a 90° with no pain. A note : im not a runner. 69 years young male. Thank you both again. God's Blessing you. William L.
This is the best explanation of FAI I’ve come across. I have been in pain that has progressively gotten worse for about six years now. I was finally diagnosed with FAI and labrum tears in both hips. This problem obviously can’t be stretched or exercised away, but prior to my current diagnosis physical therapy did provide some relief, especially since I started getting aches and pains in other places the longer the issue persisted. Hopefully once I see the orthopedic surgeon I can have the issue corrected and physical therapy will have a more effective, lasting impact afterwards.
This video is incredibly helpful. I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome and Marfans (my parents have each but my twin came out with neither lol) and at 13 I was run over by a reckless driver going on the pavement and dislocated the hip after that I was diagnosed with EDS and told my hips were fine and shouldn’t hurt and now 13 years later it took for me taking up a medical sciences degree and radiology degree for me to look at my own images and self diagnose then bring it to them and now Wednesday I see the surgeon. I’m taking codeine, oxycodone and the lowest dose fentanyl patches for my joint pains but the drs somehow thought my hips wouldn’t help even though I blew life savings on physios, osteopaths, private care (we have free care in my country) but the private drs said I was lying and too young for my symptoms. I even saw Nick Cullen from the Stanmore foot and ankle surgeons page and he said my hips were causing my feet problems and so did 12 other doctors but my GP ignoring my concerns refused to do images they needed to treat me further and they’ve refused since 2016 despite more than 30 medical letters asking to 🙃
For someone who has cam type FAI, what helps relieve the pain when it flares up? Have tried: ice, heat, and anti-inflammatory medication, which have not helped at all. Thanks!
Good video. Thank you. In this video you mentioned another video you did and you said you would link it below but it is not linked. I would like to watch that video!
i was diagnosed with an impingement, but there’s not a lot of pain, just really irritated and uncomfortable clicking every time i take a step. i really hope i won’t need surgery
Always shut off "auto focus", especially when shooting closeups. Notice that the backwall is in focus, while the skeleton is not in focus, and then the other way, back and forth. That's autofocus not working well. Use manual focus to keep focus on the actual subject you are shooting, either photographing and/or videography.
I hurt myself while squatting (I made the mistake of readjusting my hip while squatting) and I felt my thigh move/slide forward which caused hip pain and a pinch. I haven’t been able to get rid of the pain when squatting meaning I have to be careful not to slide forward with my hips (just gotta stay straight and go down, and that works without pain). I haven’t been able to find a cure, 10 years later I’m just learning what it could possibly be! The PT did say my hip is slanted slightly forward when laying down. And when I bend my (R) thigh I can feel the pinch. I will try strengthening my hips thank you for the exercises!
Everytime I try to do a flutter/scissor kick abs work out I feel pain around my hip. It feels like two bones rubbing against each other. because of that I have to do it slow. Can you tell me what the problem is?
i actually have all of them. Illiopsoas/hip flexors got fixed through a year of hard work on it, but my bone spurs will never go away and now my groin hurts everyday since 3 years. Most pain usually when i sit still/dont move, stand up, after bicycling (not during, surprisingly). Basically in pain all the time. Imagine getting stabbed in the groin all the time with blunt needles
@Cheryl Lucke Yea exactly! i dont really have the unlocking hip problem (although it does snap when i do large rotary movement). Looks like its gonna be surgery for labrum damage OR cutting away the impingement bone.. (followed by oven more therapy probably)
Hi... I showed this area (2=1/2") below my left hip bone and my tendon that lifts my leg is also painful. You will never guess what my doctor said to me. ??? It is probably scar tissue from the removal of my ovaries! Now I know how to approach and treat the area. I bought a Purewave and have used it for 3 nights and the improvement has been great. Thank you to the moon and back
I was told about ten years ago I have hip impingement. Recently out of the blue, I began having upper thigh and groin pain. I couldn't even put pressure on one of my legs. Can that be a hip flexor problem too? Went to the chiropractor and it felt great after the adjustment, but the groin pain is slightly back again. Not sure if this is from the impingement or something else.
What do you guys recommend for skateboarders? I'm 30yrs old and Ive always had a jamming/misaligned feeling in my left leg, sometimes I can get my hip to pop (sometimes series of pops) and feels better but lately feels jammed more and experiencing knee and heel pain. Also lower back hurts sometimes as well. What could I do to stay conditioned for skateboarding? Thanks for your help in advanced.
Would a "Thumper" (percussive) massager be more effective than your fingers for breaking down the scar tissue? It seems pretty aggressive and it's a lot easier on the fingers, so you can spend more time on the massaging.
I’m curious now. I was told I have a hip impingement when I was 16 (last year) and I have bone spurs on my hips. I was also told that I have a short IT band, some an inflammatory issue and a leg length discrepancy. On top of that I have plantar fasciitis. I feel like my body is falling apart
I’d try the RUclips Dr. Chuck Tillotson backloop exercise, the “long leg” is usually the side that has the IT band symptoms because the longer leg tends to rotate laterally as the pelvic girdle torques. The higher stack of towels goes under the buttock associated with the short leg side and the short leg is the one with the bent knee as you do the backloop exercise. The Smash Q-L video will help you with symptoms as well. Strengthening the gluteus medius is required for long term stability of the pelvic girdle. The backloop can only get you temporarily comfortable.
Just had an MRI show this plus labram and muscle small tear. I cannot lay my left leg completely down in bed or on the therapy table. It hurts when lifting my leg in and out of my suv. Also when I swing my left leg outward. Been going on for 3 months and on into the 4th.
What about IFI... the surgical ramifications are serious, compromising the psoas, but not taking action to correct the impingement destroys the muscle that is impinged upon. Help!
I think I have this and has what has lead me to knee problems lately I noticed when I squatted my hips were pinched and felt really restricted as if they couldn’t go any further as much as I tried and ut forced my knees to come in more than I wanted leaving to a lot of force on my knees
I’ve got hip impingement ain’t it sucks especially someone who plays sports (footballer/soccer) and as a PT. On a day to day I don’t feel it at all unless I’m running for an extended period of time (becomes more fatigued rather than pain) and when I sleep it is straight pain! I’ve tried everything, stretch, specific exercise but no victory... I might have someone band up my leg and pull my leg over my head I don’t know. Surgery might be the only option
When bringing the knee to the chest, and the knee is at one about 90 degrees is when the pinching sensation happens on the outside of the hip. That’s tendinitis? I’ve been struggling with hip pain for 10 months.
Seriously though, what exercises can you do to reduce the chances of developing the hip flexor tendonitis? Mine comes up every now and then. Is it glute exercises?
Wow.. This is the best explanation I've seen. My legs look like they're aligned exactly like that skeleton in the beginning, where my knee kind of caves in. I've always walked like a duck lol. Got into powerlifting where I was squatting way below 90 degrees and my hips are now wrecked. I am only 25 :(. Constant stabbing, aching burning pain deep inside my hips and they sound like meat grinders when I move my legs. Great explanation though. Hope I can avoid surgery and walk without pain
some doctors would like to make surgery like scraping the excess of the bone to handle labrum however ı fear of surgey. I went to physical therapy but did'nt work. Now ı started to swim however ı still have pain sometimes
Mine only hurts when I squat. I have been lifting for over two years and it just started. The second test BARELY hurts, but I feel it in the spot that hurts when I squat. Why did it just start hurting now? My pain is much further into my hip crease/groin than the other thing.
@@santinataylor5884 Ankle mobility. I'd stopped stretching my ankles before squats a few months before, they gradually got tight again. I had previously been able to do a full toddler squat with my legs in front of me, I'd started putting them out to the side (which allows the shin to be much more upright). I started working on doing one with my legs in front of me (I couldn't at first). After stretching for a while, I am back to squatting with no pain. It's also fixed my head posture and related TMJ irritation. All from the ankles.

What if you feel the pinch for both tests (the bringing the leg straight to the chest and the bringing the leg, flexing and rotating)? Would it be rectus femoris or true impingement?
At the end when you guys were doing the exercises when you laid on your back and put your knee to your chest and then put your legs straight out in front of you while laying down if mine pops on my right side each time very loud where my hip is at what does that could be an indication of
Hi Guys. Does bad posture have a part to play in hip flexor tendonitis? Also, how long does it take to develop both of them & is it wear and tear or genetic?
I had an MRI done on my left hip and it came back saying a small amount of joint fluid in the femoral acetabular joints bilaterally, can you please explain what this means?
I agree with most of the things you guys mentioned in the video. However, just talking from my personal experience, experience with patients I've come across and litterature - light pain or irritation around the side of the hip close to the greater trochanter very often is related hip trigger points. If pressure techniques give a good relief, a trigger point condition might be the case, but in quite a few cases it's (maybe along with trigger points) the trochanteric bursa that's inflammed. In contrast to an active trigger point, pressing on an inflammed bursa will not make people feel better, but pain will likely increase. In my view, therapists and doctors (at least here in Denmark) too often assume there's an injury to the ITB, but they forget that that tissue can tolerate a lot of force and is unlikely to be the first tissue to get irritated from running, long term sitting/laying or even sports like activities that create hip friction and/or snapping hip symtoms. Ultrasound may provide signs of inflammation, but probably not specific enough to tell what structure has damage. In short, I just want to say that tendinopathies in my opinion are too often assumed as cause of these side hip conditions, where bursitis and/or trigger points are the real origin of pain in many cases.
So yeah, i've got true hip impingement according to these tests. Doesn't affect me much except for when excercising and i've been doing a lot of stretching to get rid of it. Maybe i've just been aggrevating it even more?
What if i bring my left knee to chest, but the right hip hurts, more on the insideish area. I dunno if it matters or not but it didn't start until i started doing squats with weights Edit: could it just be an inflamed muscle?
Omg that’s my exact problem! I recently started going to the gym doing many leg and glute exercises, weightlifting all that and my left inner hip where your thigh and pelvic meet hurts so much. It’s a sharp pain and idk if it’s a hip flexor strain or hip impingement. Anyways it’s weird because just like you said when I bring my right knee to my chest my left hip hurts but when I bring my left hip the strained one up to my chest it doesn’t hurt. So if you found a solution please inform me! Please.
What about intense long-term bilateral meralgia paresthetica symptoms-stabbing pain, intense burning, throbbing, "bugs crawling under skin"-due to years of hard physical labor? L4,/L5, L5/S1 degenerative disc, annular tears, mild herniation? Injections only last a few months at best.
Hello. I've been to physical therapist and orthopedist with it but they didn't help me. When I lay on my back and lower leg something in my lower back and hip jumps. When I squat and raise it also jumps but harder in the same spot. What should I do?
I have impingement after a trip and fall, acetabulum post column fracture that wasn’t discovered till after it “healed” and I failed the return to work program. Now they’re calling it a acetabular post column deformity. There is limited range of motion, pain, pinching, balance is bad on that leg, etc. I’m 38, concerned and little confused. 🙁
I've had popping and clicking in my hip evrrytime I move my leg, since I was a young teen. Now, in my late 30s, I have horrible hip pain. Will be talking to my physiotherapist about this. Seems I always have damage to only the right side.
I love you guys so much! I have a request. Can you talk about hip dysplasia. Most info are for dogs lol. I found out b4 I was 30. Im 33 now and don't want to wait until I'm "old" enough to have surgery. I also have bursitis. Physical therapy hurts it. I'm curious to see what stretches and tip you might offer
Have you guys ever scene fai cause si joint dysfunction? I apparently have fai but pain mostly in my lower back. Tried therapy for over a year now and I'm still having bad pain especially after waking up from sleep.
can the head of the hip bone, run into that hip flexor tendon? Thats ussually where i am sore, I get a popping noise during internalrotation in my hip. feels like bone rubbing on tendon then poppp ot releases. If i stretch pop sound is less intense. Thanks love your vids
Hey guys, after years of hip pain I got diagnosed with this in both hips, but it's worse on my left side. I'm seeing someone to discuss surgery soon as I'm in alot of pain and lost mobility.. Would you recommend using two crutches to help me untill then?
Very good information. I have been having issues with my hip area specifically inside (adductors?). I seem to be able to externally rotate my legs, but the internal rotation is difficult and quite uncomfortable. One thing that really bothers me is that I have great difficulty moving my legs across the mid-point line of my body. Seems like something is "pinching" way high up in my groin area. Same thing for "figure 4" when I place my right ankle across my left thigh; same "pinching" sensation. Up until 2-1/2 years ago I could sit cross-legged all the time w/o difficulty/discomfort; now not so. Is this "pinching" indicating hip impingement? Any videos that might address this would be greatly appreciated.
Band distraction helps the arthrokinematics and femoral glide with FAI. The posterior capsule can be tight and the mobs help. These guys are good but are missing the mark on this issue.
This is the video that I really wanted(not wanted) to see. Saw a dozen about Band Mobilization and tons of comments that it provides immediate relief. Tried myself and it made feel like I just had 3 pills of a strong pain killer. On those videos people are saying that those stretches helped them save thier hips. Now these guys are saying: basically you cant do anything about it. Tis is a typical Doctor vs Life Hacks kinda situation. THey make sense when they say, that stretches cant change your bones. But other videos say that stretches mobilize joints and push them outwards of socket where all the friction is happening. So technically, if joint stays out with the help of stretched muscle, you have solved the problem. Only question is , your bones stay the same and joint will go back, unless it is re-trained.
What do you mean when you say that pulling the knee to the chest "pinches"? I get a distinct feeling of stiffness/resistance like a jarring sensation that I don't feel in the other hip at all.

Bingo. Joint mobilization works. Muscles can be retrained to adjust
If it's hip impingement,While laying on side, upon sitting up, push up off table pain would occur?
What if you feel the pinch for both tests (the bringing the leg straight to the chest and the bringing the leg, flexing and rotating)? Would it be rectus femoris or true impingement?
Thanks so much this help
What about fixing the actual FAI though?
What if you have positive on both?
PercussiveShades hopefully youve figured it out n went to a dr...
Why didn't you perform selective tissue tension test with the hip in extension placing the strain on the flexors in the lengthened position?
At the end when you guys were doing the exercises when you laid on your back and put your knee to your chest and then put your legs straight out in front of you while laying down if mine pops on my right side each time very loud where my hip is at what does that could be an indication of
Hi Guys. Does bad posture have a part to play in hip flexor tendonitis? Also, how long does it take to develop both of them & is it wear and tear or genetic?
I had an MRI done on my left hip and it came back saying a small amount of joint fluid in the femoral acetabular joints bilaterally, can you please explain what this means?
did you find out what that meant
You guys absolutely rock!!

"trigger point" i.e. Wooo
I have bursitis in my hips at the moment and it is incredibly painful. I think people underestimate/misunderstand how painful it is 🥺
What would you suggest for
Protrusão acetabular
Brilliantly genius
Can you have both?
So yeah, i've got true hip impingement according to these tests. Doesn't affect me much except for when excercising and i've been doing a lot of stretching to get rid of it. Maybe i've just been aggrevating it even more?
What if i bring my left knee to chest, but the right hip hurts, more on the insideish area. I dunno if it matters or not but it didn't start until i started doing squats with weights
Edit: could it just be an inflamed muscle?
Omg that’s my exact problem! I recently started going to the gym doing many leg and glute exercises, weightlifting all that and my left inner hip where your thigh and pelvic meet hurts so much. It’s a sharp pain and idk if it’s a hip flexor strain or hip impingement. Anyways it’s weird because just like you said when I bring my right knee to my chest my left hip hurts but when I bring my left hip the strained one up to my chest it doesn’t hurt. So if you found a solution please inform me! Please.
After X Rays my Dr. said I have Femoroacetabular Impigmeant should I have surgery? I have pain
Pain is excruciating for me. I can't take Nsaids. Guess I live with it.
Love these guys!
My acetabulum was shattered during hip surgery I’m in constant pain and I’m looking for some alternatives to Relieve my pain
awesome video, i need one on physical therapy treatment for hip trochanteric bursitis urgengly , Regards
is there any way to speak with you gentlemen?
I can’t even lift my leg to do these exercises
I've had popping and clicking in my hip evrrytime I move my leg, since I was a young teen. Now, in my late 30s, I have horrible hip pain. Will be talking to my physiotherapist about this. Seems I always have damage to only the right side.
Did you get a diagnosis or treatment for this yet?
Is there any chance the hip impingement problem could be because of the psoas?
I love you guys so much! I have a request. Can you talk about hip dysplasia. Most info are for dogs lol. I found out b4 I was 30. Im 33 now and don't want to wait until I'm "old" enough to have surgery. I also have bursitis. Physical therapy hurts it. I'm curious to see what stretches and tip you might offer
Have you guys ever scene fai cause si joint dysfunction? I apparently have fai but pain mostly in my lower back. Tried therapy for over a year now and I'm still having bad pain especially after waking up from sleep.
Me too did it get better?
@@katiegarces no. Has fail surgery. The a L5 S1 fusion. Worst off than before. Stay away from surgery.
can the head of the hip bone, run into that hip flexor tendon? Thats ussually where i am sore, I get a popping noise during internalrotation in my hip. feels like bone rubbing on tendon then poppp ot releases. If i stretch pop sound is less intense. Thanks love your vids
swiming ? helps ?
If you have been diagnosed with Hip Impingement does that still rule it out?

Informative 👏
What do you mean when you say that pulling the knee to the chest "pinches"? I get a distinct feeling of stiffness/resistance like a jarring sensation that I don't feel in the other hip at all.
i get pain if i bend my hip over 80° flexion... what could be the reason for this and what exercises would you recommend?
I always learn something new with these two men. I really trust and appreciate their work. I deal with chronic pain and their videos give me hope.
Can training in a weights vest contribute to a hip inpingement?
