    A few spells that I’m suprises wasn’t mentioned:
    Greater Invisibility: Best buff at level 4. Gets crazy when casted on a Rogue or a Paladin.
    Dimension Door: Best get out of jail free card for you and an ally.
    Animate Objects (!): Best damage spell by far at this level when used on tiny objects. I rate it as borderline broken. If the party has access to Crusader’s Mantle you will dominate most bosses.
    Synaptic Static: Psychic fireball. Targets INT which most monsters suck at. Deals psychic damage which is almost never resisted. A super Bane spell on top.

    Polymorph is probably the best level 4 spell bar none, but 9 times out of 10 you should be casting it on a party member at low health. Functionally it is basically a 100+ HP healing spell that also gives you a new tank with good damage.

    • @Nathan_Talisien
      @Nathan_Talisien 5 лет назад +3

      I've seen that done once, and you're right, it's kind of brilliant in the right situation.
      I saw it in the last campaign I played in. We were fighting a group of drow slavers and it wasn't going well (this was the 5th or 6th encounter since our last long rest- our fault, we kept pushing on despite DM hints to pack it in) so our resources were getting scary low. Battle started with several of us failing saves versus a Fireball, and a Sleep spell stopping our Fighter- off to a bad start, and it didn't get better for a while. The turning point came about 7-8 rounds in... Our party's Sorcerer was nearly dead, pinned in a corner by three drow fighters with the Bard. They were whispering at each other, then both got huge grins. The Bard gets his turn and says he's holding a spell until the Sorcerer acts. The Sorcerer's turn comes around and she burns her last high level spell slot casting Tenser's Transformation on herself... and then the Bard triggers his held action to cast Polymorph turning the Sorcerer into a triceratops. A triceratops that's basically raging, thanks to Tenser's.
      I can't help but chuckle when I imagine what the looks on the faces of those drow would have been as a battered human woman in bloody robes- barely able to stay conscious, let alone stand- suddenly became several hundred pounds of EXCEEDINGLY angry dinosuar.

      In a one-shot an NPC sorcerer transformed a dragon into a toad while it was flying above a 200ft pit. Made the fight easier by dropping the dragon to almost half health with a single spell.

    • @M0ebius
      @M0ebius 5 лет назад

      Vengarth To pull that off first you have to burn through 3 legendary resistances, and then have the dragon fail the Wisdom save with a +8 bonus. And even after burning 4+ spells, it’s only 20d6 damage, or 70 damage on average. For it to lose half its HP, either the DM watered down the stat block, or you guys are playing with some sort of house rule, or the NPC sorcerer somehow rolled max damage 20 times.

    • @laral094
      @laral094 5 лет назад

      @@M0ebius Well it was a weaker dragon. We were supposed to stand a chance with lvl 5 characters. And the dragonborn paladin almost convinced the dragon he was just there to deliver a packet.
      However it was only possible cause the dragon kept rolling between 1 and 5 on almost every saving throw.
      And the damage roles ended up pretty high. We were extremely lucky the entire time.

    A minor note about the Disintegrate interaction is that as of the most recent errata, Disintegrate now needs to leave you at 0 hp in order to be a confirmed kill as opposed to before where it could outright kill druids, polymorphed targets, and similar creatures with constrained hit points.

  • @Diditallforthexp
    @Diditallforthexp 5 лет назад +8

    Wall of Force is beastly for a controller. If you play Overwatch, it's very similar to a Mei wall, splitting a group up so you can isolate targets while their allies helplessly watch the carnage. I've also had players double up walls to make an X or a corridor through enemies and environmental threats. For extra trickiness, pop a wall of force on the ceiling of a tunnel and collapse it. When the enemy comes... Rocks fall, everyone dies.

    • @Nathan_Talisien
      @Nathan_Talisien 5 лет назад +1

      It makes a decent utility spell, too. Trapped floor? Make a horizontal Wall of Force just above the surface of it. Ditto for bridges that are out, or places where there never was one and you need it. Also, I've seen it used to block a river coming out of the side of a cliff. Well, until the DM decided that six rounds of pressure was all the rock around the hole could handle and it kinda exploded... Just a bit. :P

    My lvl 9 Abjurers spell list
    3rd: Leomunds Tiny Hut,Magic Circle, Fireball, Dispel Magic (i was lucky enough to find some scrolls)
    4th: Banishment, Vitriolic sphere, Arcane eye, Stone skin( which is honestly a very lackluster spell)
    5th: Conjure Elemental, Wall of Force

  • @Diditallforthexp
    @Diditallforthexp 5 лет назад +7

    I'd love to see you guys make a "sustain party" of 4-5 characters. A couple beefy tanks, a controller and a healer possibly. The refilling HP pools of a Moon Druid, the resistances of a Totem barb, the heals of a Life Cleric and the control of any kind of Wizard. Really just the Moon Druid cycling forms and refilling HP, then having Polymorph cast on them before death, and healing up the squishies and fallen with the heavy armor Cleric. The Totem Barb would just be "pulling aggro" by applying disadvantage on attacks against allies and stopping pushes with polearm mastery.

    Storm Sphere is one of my favorites, it has two sources of damage and anything that let's me attack with my bonus it always helpful. It also creates an obstacle for enemies and has a potential to do 40 D6 damage, which is unlikely but possible.

  • @keeganmbg6999
    @keeganmbg6999 5 лет назад +2

    I just want to add that Animate Dead lets you choose skeletons, if you’re a necromancer a 6th level Animate Dead brings back 8 creatures. Skeletons are immune to exhaustion. So you can have them grapple your enemies. And if they pass their save they don’t die when they enter. And they can help force your opponent to start their turn their.

    • @Nathan_Talisien
      @Nathan_Talisien 5 лет назад +2

      Good idea! They wouldn't even necessarily need to grapple or make saves, either... Just standing at the edge of the area of effect, keeping your intended targets from leaving, would be good enough.
      Hmm... I need to look up the specifics on raised skeletons again. I know the commands they can be given are limited, but if they can be told to use the Total Defense action to offset their fragility a bit, it might get a lot more blocking time out of them.

    Sickening radiance can be brutal when used in combination with other control spells and especially devastating if you are playing at a very tactical minded table. As a DM if you feel that your players are "abusing" this spell, just remember that once cast this spell hits ANYTHING that enters its area including players.

So just because a PC has a good Dex doesnt mean the PC behind him does. Its 3d8 damage to a monster, PC, door, etc. What a bad lil spell. Thanks David & Ted, you guys put out so much content! Oh wow that last spell I never new it existed. Guess I just always overlooked it lol. Also for the necromancer who wants undead that don't last (kinda for the good necro?) Danse macabre. Level 5, 1 action casting time, consentration, 1 hour duration, 5 medium to small corpses become either skeletons or zombies you decide, plus the get bonuses to there attack and damage rolls equil to your spell casting ability modifier, they can be controlled through mental commands 60ft away and last untill the spell ends or they're destroyed. A none permanent undead horde great for battles and other things (carring loot out a dungeon or being trap fotter) and you don't have to keep them so the wandering paladin or city won't be like wtf? Also your not permanent enslaving someone's soul just kinda putting them in an hour long jail sentence probably for trying to kill you and your friends lol. I think that's less then evil since town guards would throw you in the slammer for a night or worse if you did something bad. Anyways what are your thoughts?

      It is an excellent spell that my evoker uses to really change battles. Shes lvl 8 now but i have my eyes set on Dawn. Noone talks about this spell. But it does 4d10 real sun light radien damage on cast AND 4d10 on the end of thier turn. Meaning that it really do 8d10 damage in a 30ft radius. It sure would be nice if any group im in stayed together long enough to make it to tier 2. But typically between people having weird work schedules, kids, family issues, and health problems, having a consistent group never happens, and none of the DMs i know will start a game above 3rd level

    • @Nathan_Talisien
      @Nathan_Talisien 5 лет назад +2

      I feel your pain. My gaming group is slightly more fortunate, but only slightly. There's about 20 of us, six who can DM, and we run three games a week; every game is a 'drop in' game... and yet with so many people to draw from and time slots to play, we rarely manage to get more than four or five people at the table at once.
      If you have enough people to make it work, maybe you can borrow our campaign set-up? Despite the challenges, it's been working pretty well for about a year and a half now.
      We set our campaign up so that the players are members of a guild who can be hired out for all kinds of jobs (like the Hunter's Guild in Phantasy Star 4, if you're familiar with that old RPG). The five of us who DM worked together on an over-all plot for the campaign, and we each have solo plot control only over single sessions, with each being a short-plot 'job' that is being performed by whatever players can make it on a given night. By making the players part of a group where their tasks are assigned instead of a fixed adventuring party it's a lot easier to explain away people who suddenly aren't in the group... They're just not on that assignment.

      @@Nathan_Talisien yea, a friend of mine suggested something like this, apparently the name for it is a "west marches" campaign. Its a neat idea but i only have like 8 people to pull from currently. And NONE of them could stay focuses long enough to finish a mission in a 4-5 hour session. Hell, they may take an hour to fight half dozen goblins. Im considering, when i GM, using a timer for each turn. Anyone who isnt done finish their turn in a set amount of time will be skipped. Either that or i need a new group

    15:57 They aren't "hit" by the spell when you first cast it, they have to move into it or start their turn there. This is true for almost all DnD 5e spells of this nature, which is rather unintuitive. Further spells like Cloud of daggers won't work at all unless the creature moves into it; it sucks. It's a really bad job with the rules imo, highlighted here by two decades long playing vets totally not getting this spell and rule right, which is a very important fundamental template for all dnd 5e spells of this nature, and grossly flawed I'd argue.

    Fire shield, really? I mean, I don't hate it, but as a go-to buff? What about haste or greater invisibility?
    And scrying is not a ritual, and rituals don't take ten times as long to cast.

    • @Diditallforthexp
      @Diditallforthexp 5 лет назад +1

      Haste is great, and so is GI, but Fire Shield covers so many bases. Versatile defenses against super common elements even at high level, and for a melee caster like an EK or other Gish, the ally triggering effect makes for absolutely INSANE damage. As good as Haste is, it only allows ONE extra attack only, has a bitch of a downside when it wears off and only gives advantage on Dex saves.
      They are situational for sure, but Fire Shield has so many upsides and absolutely no downsides.

    • @jonc.6046
      @jonc.6046 5 лет назад +1

      @@Diditallforthexp I'm not sure we're talking about the same spell.
      The serious downside of fire shield is that it is a gamble. If the wizard is never hit by a melee attack, the spell does no damage. The resistance means nothing if the enemy/situation doesn't deal that type of damage. Even the lighting doesn't matter if you're carrying a torch. Though it is very powerful in some situations, that is not how I would define "go to."
      I have no idea what you mean by "ally triggering effect." As far as I can see, there is nothing in the description of fire shield that either triggers allies or is triggered by allies, unless an ally attacks the wizard, in which case the shield would damage that ally.

      I kow, I did not say it was either. I was very deliberate when describing it as one of my favourite spells for an abjuration wizard rather than an abjuration wizard spell. Obviously you haveto multiclass to get it, but if you do it is a really powerfull spell in the hands of an abjuration wizard since their arcane ward can greatly extend the amount of return damage you can get out of Armor of Agathys before the temporary hitpoints run out.

      @carsonrush3352 5 лет назад +2

      Easy enough, just grab as many expertise features as you can, which gives at least a plus 10 to each check by level 13: 6 levels of Rogue (Scout) gives 6 expertise, 1 level Cleric (Knowledge) grants another 2 expertise, 10 levels of Bard (Lore) to obtain 4 more expertise and more proficiencies, make them a human variant prodigy to grab 1 expertise, and grab pass without a trace as a Bard in order to get that sweet +10 to stealth with 30' radius. If your DM lets you, grab as many feats that grant expertise as you can.
      By the end of it, you should have at least 14 of the 18 skills able to achieve a 30 skill check (13 expertise and +10 to stealth with a spell), without counting your ability modifiers. Throw out unpopular skills like animal handling and medicine (only needs a 10 to be useful), and you're only short by 2 skills and still adventure's league legal. To start out fast, go for 1 lvl cleric, 3 level rogue, and 3 level bard with human prodigy to have 8 expertise by level 7. Use the skilled feat until you have proficiency in as many as possible. If you want, take 1-3 levels of Artificer to gain 3-5 expertise with tools.

      @@hydrainfernos9081 I typed in "wizard tier 2" and this was the very first video that showed up. It's not the most easily read font but I wouldn't say it's hard to read in any capacity. Perhaps it's different from computer to phone, but it's pretty simple to read on mobile

      What kind of device are you using? But duly noted. Was fine on my phone and desktop. Was there any problem with Monday's Animal Companion video? Thanks and sorry.

      So we played with some different fonts that seem problematic for some, but not others. So we won't be using them any more.
