Your right. It burns your arms out with weight. Can't attach to paint stick and its a constant grease and suction battle. I threw mine and the mini edger paint stick in the garbage.
I'm hearing great stories on the nappy covers. Esp on absorption, dripless and texturing. What's your experience?

I absolutely love this tool! I am a diy person and I tell you what….. IT SAVES ALOT OF TIME!!!! I even had 3 back surgeries and this is so easy to use! Clean up yes is a little bit more time consuming however I’d rather use this and not have a pan for anyone (including my pups) to spill knock over or step in and have prints everywhere! So yes I absolutely loooooove this tool! I got my bathroom done in like 30mins and most of my living room which is a huge room done in like 30mins! My boys love to help me with it and is a family friendly tool! Now my boys are 15yrs, 12yrs and 10yrs old but they love to help me with painting using this tool! So yes mom approved and DIY-er approved!!!!

Always look at what the pros use. If there not using this or a professional grade one then don't bother. Great and very fair and accurate review.

I've had the battery version for about 15 yrs and yes it still works, it's one of those things you'll hardly ever use but when you come across an odd situation you'll be glad you had it, had a skylight tunnel that was like 10 ft deep and there wasn't enough room to use an extension pole unless you loaded your roller, climbed up ladder before your roller then once you got up there extend your pole apply paint and do it all over again in reverse, with this thing I could fill it, climb up and get a fairly large area done before having to come down and refill, the ceiling was to low and room small enough that you couldn't walk your extension pole up into skylight,

That said, I would recommend the Graco Magnum Project Painter Plus and the Graco Power Roller. Lay that paint onto the wall quick, and have someone roll behind you with a quality sleeve to give a better finish. Way more expensive, but reasonable still for most DIYer's

How do use the similar Wagner product back in the day and found them to be fairly satisfying to use on rental property. The only downside that I have found to the Wagner paint stick was the inlet valve for drawing the paint into the roller. After three or four times usage the valve gets dirty and then starts to drip from the valve as you’re pushing pressure on the paint stick this is very annoying especially if you’re painting without a dropcloth. Which we do quite frequently when we’re painting rental property. If they could solve this problem I having a removable valve that could be replaced or washed out and reinstalled that would make this product very handy especially for the do it yourself Individual.

You know what to do if the tip is not doing right and why you do it! Hope you git a chance to get into this, and thanks again for all the help!

I was about to get two of these till I found your video review. I really do appreciate your professional and honest review. I do understand this is more of a DIY product and not a professional product. That makes complete sense. I'm a DIYer working on repairs and upgrades on my house. I prefer to hear what a professional has to say about a product as the pros would be much more knowledgeable on the pros and cons of a product and what to look for if any flaws or issues using the product should come up. Seeing you had issues with the length of the smart roller with the floor, ceiling and wall behind you this would be something to think about before purchasing.
Thank again for your honest review.

I watched your video review of the Wagner ez roller before I painted my bathroom. I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to use. While it does take a whole tube of paint to prime the roller, after that, the paint went on like a breeze. The paint went on thick enough, so I didn't need a second coat. I had to refill the roller 3 times while painting a 40 sq foot bathroom.

I wouldn't paint a room without one!!! I'm short with bad knees - getting up and down off of ladders repeatedly is not possible. Pouring paint repeated into a tray is even too much for my back. With this, I can do a coat of paint in a 10' x 12" room in under 45 minutes. The weight of it isn't a problem. Use the weight to help roll. I worked out a strategy of splitting the wall in thirds. Top first - where I can use the extended part a bit to give me better reach. Then middle where you want less paint in the tube for balance. Then bottom, when refilling is coming do and I can use it both full and empty. I do about 3 or 4 feet (remember I have a short wing span!). Then move on to the next section. A beginner should really start with a room - and move your way to the hallways and smaller spaces when you have a feel for the stick. Doing the bathroom - I simply just filled the tube less to accommodate the space. Refill takes seconds - and since you're not on a ladder, it's simply a quick break. I had a person to do my edging before the second coat. Wagner now has an edging stick - which I haven't tried yet.
For the stippling problem - that's your clue the roller needs more paint!! I also found the roller gets BETTER the more you use it and get the nap flattened more. We did 3 bedrooms, bathroom and my ex did a full 25 foot peaked wall with it. No lint, no stipples, just perfectly smooth!!
Cleaning all the pieces is pretty easy - just flush with water in your utility tub. The roller though - that takes some work. Wash off the exterior as best you can, the fill up the roller with water - and squeeze down the roller and up the roller. Keep repeating until the roller is clean. You can also stick it in a bucket and let it soak a bit while you take a break. Then it goes a bit faster. And I bet if you had a hand sprayer - it would really go fast since you could push the paint back into the tube.
Edit to add: I forgot a pretty important part. It's only $25.00!!! By the time you buy rollers and pans - you're spending that anyway.

I love this comment... common sense answers & helpful advice to anyone considering this tool. I own this paint stick myself & truly, it IS an excellent tool. I find it annoying that anyone would have been steered away from this tool b/c they didn't understand some of the points you've made here.
I also find it sad that so many folks in the comments advocated just tossing it out & buying another, rather than going to the trouble to clean it. More plastic in the landfill & oceans is unconscionable, when just taking a few minutes & resisting the urge to be lazy, could have prevented that. Thank you so much for your thoughtful input.

I have a Wagner Paint Stick that I originally bought about 17 years ago. The ratcheting action is a newer feature, as mine is purely a plunger... that doesn't matter to me, as I absolutely LOVE that this thing kept me from having to repeatedly load my roller, & trip over a paint tray, spilling paint all over the floor. Since I'm a bit of a klutz, that feature was HUGE in my decision to buy this tool at the time. Also, mine came with a paint guard that helped keep the spatter from coming back at me when I was doing ceilings, & that was useful in those situations.
I agree, you DO need an entire stick full of paint to do the initial prime of the roller, but once it's primed, it's primed. Also you DO need to READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE starting your first set up, as the grease seems quite important in helping all those o-rings make their best seal, which maybe would have prevented the trouble you had getting the stick to draw up initially. People tend to not like to read instructions, but reading them before your first use of this paint stick IS important, & maybe would have saved some of the negative feelings you shared with us, before the stick started to grow on you!
I appreciated your comments about the length of the stick in the tighter space of a hallway. I only used this in wide open spaces, so that issue would not have occurred to me before I recommended this to a friend. So I agree, if you only need to paint a narrow hallway & no wide open rooms, this is probably not the best choice for you. But if you've got open rooms, &/or, if you've got ceilings to do, this tool is an absolute God-send! I haven't painted in my home for years, but a friend has a new home that he is getting ready to paint now, & this was one of the first things I jumped to recommend to him... it truly cuts down on some of the things I absolutely HATE about painting, & makes the job go much faster.
    God bless! 😇
P.S. I subsequently bought what I believe was a Wagner battery powered paint-pump for some later paint jobs & loved that even more! Though I freely admit, clean up is always the limiting factor to loving these tools! Again, I haven't painted in years, so I would have to go look for things & look it up on line to give any details about the power pump tool, I just remember loving it, as repeatedly loading paint onto a roller & risking tripping over the paint tray are two things I dread about painting; right after cuttin-in, which is the absolute PITTS!

I’m painting the brick exterior of our house. The bricks have little grooves in them and brushing takes forever to work the paint in. A thick knapped roller works well but obviously can’t use that on a ladder. I’m wondering how this would work? I wouldn’t want to descend the ladder to refill it every time but it might not be that great to refill it up there either. A power sprayer might be the best option.

    • @mcsmama
      @mcsmama 7 месяцев назад

I just realized that I did not make it clear that the power pump I subsequently purchased supplied paint to a perforated roller via a very long, small inside diameter, plastic/vinyl-type tube that was fed from the paint can via a can-lid adapter; just wanted to clarify that.
Though I would love to try one, I have never used a power sprayer, so I can't speak to the nuances of using one in any setting. However it does seem to me that any time one has to use a roller, there IS at least some increased need for balancing your body, as you must still apply some pressure through your arm while rolling, to keep the roller making good contact with the surface. I agree, you WOULD need a deeper nap roller in the setting of a brick surface, but I also would think that rolling on brick would mean that nap would still get tamped down in a manner that would decrease its effectiveness, & end up possibly requiring even more pressure be applied. That additional need to be vigilant about balancing the body, while already at a height, on a ladder & outside, seems like maybe an additional fall risk. I just don't have the experience of that setting myself to offer a valuable opinion. If you had the luxury of scaffolding, that would be another story, but on a ladder, I think power spraying would get my vote! Good luck! @@twocyclediesel1280

Happy to share my thoughts with you, but I AM concerned for the safety of anyone attempting this kind of job, especially if not having any prior experience working with the needed tools. I'm thinking you might need a few more opinions from people who, unlike me, actually HAVE done this kind of job, so you can get a good feel for everything involved & all the potential dangers. Mishaps while working on ladders are much too frequent, & often catastrophic, even for the very experienced. God bless. 😇
One other thought, I do wonder if you would STILL have to follow each section of power spaying on brick immediately with a large thick brush, to make sure the sprayed on paint makes great contact & really bonds to the brick. Because I've never worked with painting brick, I have no idea, but that thought just came to me & I would hate to have you do all that work, only to have the paint bond fail within a short time.🙂

Found one in the back of the storage room, 25 years old. Clean it up a bit, I have always clecked the suction with water and then emptied completely, including defuzzing the roller. My young teenagers made a mess of their walls, and they are being taught dry wall repair and painting. I do not trust them with a pan of paint. So, I will teach them to load it in a small concrete mixing tub. All in all, it does prevent spilled paint accidents. They still are going to mask of everything. The weight of the paint will give them a needed workout they do not get with xbox controllers.

I have been painting for 30 years, 21 of that I was in the union and now I am a painter at one of our local hospitals and had considered trying one out, but after seeing your review I don’t think it would work for our situation. Thanks for the review!

@@JonathanSterlingUSA so you're saying I should use a garden hose to clean the homeright paint stick? The homeright version holds so much paint and is in every nook and cranny. Not my idea of good use of time cleaning all the internal parts of a big straw. If you dont clean every spec of paint out of it before storing it, it will be a paint to use the next, if useable at all.

I was assuming "basically same product".
"clean every spec of paint out of it"
Exactly. Of course lots of people do not have access to a garden hose, but such a sprayer would do a bang up job at that. Removing the batteries of the electric version would be necessary, and then maybe making sure water doesn't remain in important internal areas.
I have access to a garden hose and it's useful for lots of things, that included. Assuming water-based paints.

I had the original version of this, made by HomeRight. I liked the original version and the way it loaded paint. I don't like the trigger. Just gives me the impression that it would be a weak spot. I painted my entire living room and kitchen with it and I thought it did a good job. It does take a ton of paint to load the roller initially. But over all it did work well for me. Unfortunately Wagner bought HomeRight and Wagnerized this.🙄 I can't get replacement parts for my old model. We shall see how well the new one works vs. the old. But I did like the old one enough to paint the kitchen after I did the living room. Thanks for the nice review.

I can see where the some of the problems would come from for not being able to adjust your pole length but I'm guessing if you were in a straight room without a lot of furniture and obstructions you'd be in better shape but I remember back in the day there was a similar device but way smaller and I believe it was a pad painter and it allowed you to just keep on running paint out through the holes in the pad painter and I can see that being of a value especially if you're up on a steeple and you don't want to carry paint and worry about dripping over your church or whatever and just painting a bunch of trim I don't know some of these tools probably have value in very limited situations

I’m laughing to myself because I was so frustrated using this today in a smaller room & see that I ran into all the same problems as you, add to that a leaking issue. I feel so validated. 😅
Anyway, I like the idea of it, but all in all, it’s too cumbersome & unreliable to me. It was fun to try but I don’t think I’ll bother with it again. The feel of it was also really top heavy to me because of the paint.

Keep up the great reviews. I have an earlier version, the Wagner Paintmate. From the looks of the one you have things have gotten much cheaper. The Paintmate has a splatter shield. I find it is a great tool for rolling the ceiling and it works much faster than a standard roller. The only short coming when doing ceilings is you spend most of the time looking up unlike a roller tray where you get to look down when charging you're roller from a tray. This can lead to a sore neck. I find I empty the cylinder then go back and lay-in. Doesn't work very well in confined spaces as you found out. Cleaning is a bit of a pain with all the little pieces, but doesn't take much longer than cleaning a roller and tray. After seeing your review I don't think I will replace mine if it goes bad. I do like the a ability to work right from the can.

I can attest to looking up for too long can lead to at least a sore neck I remember back in my twenties I remember painting so many ceilings in one day that I ended up with a giant not of a muscle that never went away for the rest of my life well hopefully not yet but yeah you got to relax to those neck muscles once in awhile

So my name is Tom I'm a super here in New Jersey My boss Owens nine houses here I end up doing a lot of painting when the tenants leave I just bought this tool a little over a week ago The tool did cost me $35 at Lowe's it absolutely definitely saves time applying the paint it definitely helps with not it doesn't leave a mess like when you dip your roller into the pan and you get those drip marks every once in awhile so it helps with the final cleanup at the end I will admit you clean up for the tool at the end of the job is a little annoying but for that a little bit annoyance I would absolutely recommend this tools to anybody

Excellent review and very fair, wagner have much more improvements to make to this to make it more appealing,im guessing its aimed at homeowners and not professionals and although their idea is nice and it could be useful to a professional in some instances the device is simply made too poorly with cheap breakable plastic and the length of that plunger is surely a design flaw as it rules out using it in small spaces,i would say to wagner i really like your sprayers but go back to the drawing board with this one please and improve it vastly!i would start by ditching that plunger and reverting to a nomal extension pole and have your paint can in the middle of the room and from there a system wherby you can pump the paint manually for a few seconds to build pressure and then feed it along a tube line into the roller head thus negating the weight of the plunger, like an airless sprayer but without the actual sprayer

I love the paint stick, but you need to know how to use it.
If you are just painting a small job, use a regular roller. The paint stick does use paint to fill the roller head, so only use on larger jobs. In the past I would buy the paint stick for around $20 dollars; us for one job and throw away. I have used around 20 rollers in the past 20 years. Great for using solid stain on my deck.
My wife struggles with the paint stick, (just like this guy) but both of my daughters have no problem using the paint stick.
There is more of a learning curve using the paint stick than using a regular roller.
It is great for painting ceilings.

Instead of wasting that blue tape, get a pet lint roller to de-fuzz your roller. I'm going to presume it would be a tiny bit cheaper but mostly it would prevent running out of edge tape so quickly.
