used to be in a cover band (only when I was young) and hardly ever hear the drummers unless there's something wrong, but the drum voicing and performance stood out to me in this performance and have been listening to this and a few other tracks daily for the last couple of weeks. Plenty of recordings of later performances, and they're good - but none are as good as this version. Different guys, different equipment, different amp for Lukather. Porcaro is enough some something extra that even non-drummers can hear it and then tell when he's not there.

@@perryfisher3373 I hear you, but I think that comparing top drummers or top guitarists is kind of pointless because each is so different. Top musicians can play just about anything. It's down to what they want to play, not what they can play. Neil always seemed to me to be into stretching the envelope and doing creative / unusual things. Jeff was the quintessential studio / session drummer, who could play anything, any style, immediately on the spot, while smoking a cigarette and chatting with you if you were standing next to him. He was a drumming machine. Did you know that Jeff played on a Pink Floyd track? Yeah. The timing and rhythm of the song "Mother" was so difficult that Nick couldn't play it. So Gilmour called Jeff to see if he'd come into the studio and try it. He played it straight off and that's what's on the album. With practice, Nick later learned to play it. And don't forget Steve Gadd, the "groove" machine and capable of improvising mind-blowing solos on the spot. Consider Steely Dan's "Aja". The drumming and sax you hear on the album is Gadd and Wayne Shorter on take one and two. That 32 measure outro at the end, the two of them made up on the fly during the first and second takes, at which point they were done. The rest of the band collapsed and stopped playing just to watch those two do their thing. Blew their minds. The remaining musicians then spent the next three days trying to equal what Steve and Wayne had done. Comparisons of musicians at that level of skill and talent are pretty pointless. I love this live video. High quality, seems like was taken this year. Smoking while drumming, the back up singers, the lead. What else. Woah!!! Love it.
David Paich is a super monster of keyboards. Steve Lukather is a Hard Rock Jazz Guitar God!!! Mike is a precision machine and Jeff..is absolutely amazing. All the band. Toto the best music band of the world. Forever.
That's why the members of Toto are called "first call" studio musicians. When you want the absolute best players on your record, you call these guys first to check their availability.
Rush has entered the chat about pure music ability... Toto is no doubt amazing musicians and some of the best of all time and make great music, but Rush is on another level when it comes to technical ability.
Every aspect of this performance is completely face-melting; The backup singers, Jeff's pocket, Mike's earth quaking bass, Steve's shredding solo, and David's glass shattering keys solo! Can't believe this is from 1991, what I'd pay to see this performance live and in-person...
Holy crap!! What a band...the best musicians of a complete era...Paich, Luke, the Porcaros...(Jeff is the f###ing king of groove). I' think this is the musicians heaven...
As a video guy (and bass guitar player) I noticed this immediately. 1991 was years before HD was an official standard. Now, this WAS Europe which used PAL - not as good as HD but better than NTSC (US standard until 2006). But I can’t understand the aspect ratio AND HD like resolution for 1991. I’m scratching my head on this one.

There are so many great bands that are not in the R&RHoF. Jann Wenner is a gatekeeper who is a petty little man. It's not cool who has been passed over for years due to musical politics. Why is Harry Nilsson not in the R&RHoF and the Dave Clark 5 is? It makes no sense. Anyways, Toto not being in the R&RHoF is insane and just not cool. Jann Wenner is the worst.
Wow, just wow just fucking wow - I'm literally so blown away by this performance that I have trouble putting my awe in words. The album version, as perfect as it is, has nothing on this. Such a tight, flawless live, impossible not to put you in a good mood. Amazing. I'm again reminded of why Toto has been my favorite band half my life now.
Latoya Knight..Bitter Sweet to watch..Jeff(0:14)looks tired and the smoking did not help his health..But this version is a Hurricane.Playing so great and the Brothers P together playing....Heavens Ultimate Rhythm Section.....
Toto is one of those bands that at its core is all about technical excellence... I'm not even much of a fan (I of course know this song and Africa, but that's about it), but as a guitarist know how much Steve Lukather is revered and know they're in that pantheon of bands such as Yes, Genesis, etc. where any member could also be a top notch session musician (edit: apparently they all were session musicians, lol)
Toto was a mashup of some of the greatest musicians of all time. Steve Lukather's guitar skills match none. Jeff Porcaro was practically a metronome with hands. Mike Porcaro was a fantastic bassist (rest in peace Mike and Jeff). David Paich's playing is right in time with Mike and Jeff like always, and was, in my opinion, one of the top songwriters in music history. Unfortunately I was unable to experience Toto in their prime, but their legacy in the style of modern rock will live on forever.
Your comment was spot on..however I still really miss Steve Pocaro as the additional and auxiliary player on synth. He always added that orchestral element..and still today no one can program synth string or horn sounds like him...But David P. rocks too, especially on piano.
If Toto had never recorded another song after "Rosanna" it wouldn't have mattered. Their brilliance as musicians and songwriters on this song alone guaranteed their place with the best in rock history. I'm a drummer and love Jeff Porcaro to death, but I'm in awe of the musicianship of the rest of the band. Steve Lukather shreds on guitar as usual, and David Paich on keyboards here is just unbelievable. I would vote him and Billy Powell as the top two rock pianists of all time. 😄👍
That cheek kiss on Mike at 4:43 means so much to us Toto fans. We all miss you Mike and Jeff. RIP. This is one fantastic performance. And there is Mr. Metronome not missing a beat... This is one fantastic performance. And there is Mr. Metronome not missing a beat...
I remember being a punk kid and not caring about this song when it came out, however I've come to greatly appreciate the talent on this stage and just how great Toto was/is now that I'm old.
This whole performance by Toto and Queens Live at Montreal have to be one of the best performances of all the time. Glad that they captured it in the highest quality at the time, for us younger folks to purchase them on Blu-Ray. :D
@Vinnie Moran Its not film. its shot on HD video tape, WIth HD 3 Tube colour cameras. thats why you can see streaking / comet tail effect on the picture. from 4:02 to 4:11 you can see the cameras themselves and that streaking effect. 35mm would be very costly especially for a one of long multi camera shoot like this.
Not sure you could find a better live performance. Amazing what top shelf musicians can achieve! The days of this type of musicianship is gone. Only a few remain, go see them while you can!
The complete DVD of this concert went on sale today. Reply This TOTO should be in the Legendary Status for all of the great musicians who could play a variety of styles, but when they all came together they make unmistakable "TOTO" music.
There are only two live drummers that have that bass drum sound like that, and to me its perfection. Carter Beauford in the 2003 Central Park concert, and Jeff on this live recording. Incredible sound.
Jeff started playing his half time shuffle, at that tempo, with a smoke on his mouth... I would probably eat it before bar 4, and stop playing before bar 7. Probably dead before first chorus
Seems every time i try to show off following some of these masters just results in disaster..they are who they are because they dont show off..Porcaro said he never soloed..time was his obsession..family of true professionals..rip Jeff.Mike.Joe..condolences to Steve...god bless
Despite the incredible video quality for the time, I can actually tell this was filmed in 1991. The tell-tale sign is seeing what are called light trails coming off of the stage lighting. In 1991, when concerts would be filmed, the cameras would capture light trails from the bright lights as they move around the stage. These days modern cameras no longer do that. However, it is amazing seeing such high definition for a video shot in 1991!
@@fungo6631 they only started coming in. In this live show they are using 4 tube cameras and 1 prototype CCD camera. Colour accuracy was the biggest thing with early CCD tech

Poyax They just released this on Blu-ray this summer I believe. Probably had to do quite some work to make it look and sound this good. Sound and video quality are just superb..

The production used 5 cameras 4 Sony HDC-300 3 tube HDVS cameras and one Sony HDC-500 3 CCD HDVS camera (a prototype). The 5 cameras where fed into an 8 input HDS-1000T switcher a ,live mix was recorded to an HDD-1000 Digital 1" VTR. Three of the cameras where also directly run to their own HDD-1000 VTR(ISO CAMS) so that more shots could be added or changed in post production.
The entire system of 4 VTR's and 2 DASH audio recorders was synced through the use of SMPTE time code.
The output of the switcher was also fed through a Sony HDN-22000 NTSC/PAL down-converter, the output of which was recorded on Betacam SP and D2 to allow local broadcast outlets have copies of the jazz festival for use in their broadcasts.""
Thank you for the technical explanation I understand about half it :)
For a security guard, he sure had an awful lot of information, don’t you think...

Damn!
Listen to that friggin drum groove to open things up. He says, Purdie, meets Bonham, meets Bo Diddley. Damn, that's gold! What a guy! What a musician!
You forgot steve.p brother
I totally agree bless them❤
@@crazyheeteditz1931 That's because Steve Porcaro isn't playing here.
Rush has entered the chat about pure music ability... Toto is no doubt amazing musicians and some of the best of all time and make great music, but Rush is on another level when it comes to technical ability.
I've heard Rosanna at least 10,000 times and am just now noticing how bodaciously bodacious those bass lines are. My Bodaci-o-meter is totally maxed.
XD, I love that comment. Made my day. Yeah, that's none other than Mike Porcaro, one of the greatest bassists. RIP, Mikey
How can anyone not love this? There is so much life in it. Pure JOY!
Nailing half time shuffle while casually smoking... Jeff Porcaro the true legend, one of the best drummers to ever walk on the Earth, if not the best.
Holy crap the best video quality of the 90s of anything I've seen
As a video guy (and bass guitar player) I noticed this immediately. 1991 was years before HD was an official standard. Now, this WAS Europe which used PAL - not as good as HD but better than NTSC (US standard until 2006). But I can’t understand the aspect ratio AND HD like resolution for 1991. I’m scratching my head on this one.
@@MarkHaggerty-v2i This text quoted:.

Can’t believe why TOTO is not in the rock n roll hall of fame !
If not for their music, members of Toto should be in the Hall for their contribution to pop/rock music for their excellence as studio musicians.
Its BS. Whomever decides to induct acts are complete morons.
Bon Jovi is in the Hall. Anda they suck!
Jethro Tull isn't either. It's a farce.
Absolutely loved it!! Mike and Jeff are amazing as I know they still are in heaven. R.I.P. (Rock In Peace)
one the best rhythmn sections ever to grace this earth
Latoya Knight..Bitter Sweet to watch..Jeff(0:14)looks tired and the smoking did not help his health..But this version is a Hurricane.Playing so great and the Brothers P together playing....Heavens Ultimate Rhythm Section.....
Latoya Knight indeed
This is one fantastic performance. And there is Mr. Metronome not missing a beat...
Some of his fills during Luke solo are mind blowing! Classic Jeff chops I know but WTF!!
I always love that Jeff never took solos by others "off" like many musicians do
cottagechskitty Hahah Mr. Metronome!! :D Fantastic
I still cannot accept, that Jeff has gone. His always is with me. Miss him so much ...
The man with 'The Golden Groove' Mr. Jeff Porcaro. A huge loss to music that hasn't sounded like & recovered. MIss you Jeff & Mike ;(
The thrill of having a crowd sing lyrics you wrote back at you must be incredible
Play the melody and have the crowd sing the song for you
Jeff in HD. Wonderful!
Elvis Presley
This is the best live of 'Rossana' .. what a concert back then.. pure quality
It's 2021, and I am just now realizing how incredibly tight this band was... Absolutely blown away...
2022 and couldn’t agree more!
True
Toto is one of those bands that at its core is all about technical excellence... I'm not even much of a fan (I of course know this song and Africa, but that's about it), but as a guitarist know how much Steve Lukather is revered and know they're in that pantheon of bands such as Yes, Genesis, etc. where any member could also be a top notch session musician (edit: apparently they all were session musicians, lol)
@@brandall101💯 agree. Not much of a fan myself, but vibe and technical chops are just incredible. Can’t deny the stage presence.
Jeff Porcaro's drumming is perfect.
I don't care who you are or what you do but every single person on this planet needs to watch this as this is how it's done.
Amazing!!! The band goes wild! And during the chorus, Jeff Porcaro is still laying down that pulled back snare groove--mind blowing!!!!
I just love the way Jeff Porcaro plays.

BEST VERSION OF ROSANNA LIVE, period!!!!!!!
I like the 2013 version more with Joe.
is good too though
what about the 35th anniversary live in poland?
nope the drumming isnt right -terrible version (my opinion)
Shane Murphy I highly agree. The one from 2013 in poland is much better
I keep coming back to this video because it's so incredible - I think it's the best live atmosphere ever captured!
Insane video quality. This is even better than most of what I see on TV nowadays.
Wow! Impressive... Almost impossible to believe that this amazing sound was recorded at 1991!
Sound engineering is perfect!
The background singers dancing all over the stage had me rolling! Everyone was feeling it that night!
Those girls were Hot Hot Hot!
A good time was had by all!
It is actually Whitney Houston...look closer to the girl in the over alls
@@joeywillings9189 That's incorrect.
You can actually feel the energy, especially when you hear the crowd singing during the pre-chorus
Jon Lord? Rick Wakeman? Emerson?
Donald Fagen and what about fusion?? Herbie and other fusion keyboardists are insane
Sadly Toto is more well known today for Africa instead of Rosanna.

Great idea to incorporate the backup singers. More bands should do this to keep the integrity and quality of the vocals intact.

This is amazing. I can't believe how good this looks and sounds.
35 mm film emulsion, baby.
LUKATHER ES UN SHOW MAN.

Fantastic performance, miss Jeff and Mike so much.

Miss you, Jeff, rest in peace. ❤
It was filmed in 35 mm. It doesn't get more beautiful than that.
@@vinniemoran7362 no it wasnt
Were solid state sensors not up to par for HD yet? Because by 1991 tube cameras were kinda dated.
@@fungo6631 they only started coming in. In this live show they are using 4 tube cameras and 1 prototype CCD camera. Colour accuracy was the biggest thing with early CCD tech
