Sato is underrated. He was running his mouth when trapped, sure. But in his eyes, he thought Miyagi really was going to take advantage of his helplessness and strike him down. And despite being pinned down in the middle of a devastating storm in the face of his worst enemy about to deliver a perceived fatal blow, he did not cower. He stared and growled at his imminent death without flinching. Man's got grit, you gotta give him that.
Sato was man of extremes. No gray area with him. His bitterness and hatred of Miyagi caused him to damage the village and threaten to level it. But when he saw the light finally, he went out of his way to make sure the people of the village survived the changing economy of Okinawa.
Wrong, he had to find a way to make himself feel better about the L he was about to take (in his eyes). He was scared and I kinda call bs. He was myagis friend at one point he knows he wouldn't cheap a win in an dishonorable way. That's like you thinking Goku would cheap shot u while being helpless

The way Daniel saved Yuna plays a major role. Yuna is a little child. To her this storm is viewed far more chaotic than to adults. After Daniel saved her, she remembered him forever and saw him as a guardian angel in her memories. It was genius to bring her character back.

Daniel’s face when Mr. Miyagi broke the pillar is priceless. Especially after he asked him “Can you break a log like that?” And Miyagi said “Don’t know, never been attacked by tree”
Trees can be VERY menacing. One of them one time took out Mike Tyson...
I believe that when Daniel asked Mr. Miyagi if he could break a log, Mr. Miyagi knew all along that he could break it. If Sato could, Mr. Miyagi DEFINITELY could too, since they had the same teacher. He just didn't want to admit it because he didn't want Daniel to be impressed and ask Mr. Miyagi to teach him how to break logs too. And also, he didn't want to have Daniel follow the path of ''showing-off'', because to break a log is some kind of a show-off. There is actually no point in doing something like this. And that's exactly what Mr. Miyagi had always wanted of Daniel. To make use of the REAL karate, when it truly matters. That's what he had always been trying to teach him. And eventually Mr. Miyagi proved his point when he broke the log to save Sato's life. He did it only when there indeed was reason to do it. Miyagi was a TRUE and PURE master of Karate. The ONE and ONLY!
......I've never seen so much disappointment in someone's face than the dude who played Sato in the typhoon scene when he asked his nephew to help. Whoever that actor is, he's genuinely very good and played it off perfectly.

I'm always crying laughing on this scene like bruh!😂😂😂
All these years holding a grudge but Mr. Miyagi still saw him as his lifelong friend, that's powerful
Sato was a changed man after this; he resented Miyagi for loudly proclaiming his love for Yukie when she was going to marry Sato I believe, & Sato repeated challenged him to a 'fight to the death', but in turn Miyagi saved Sato in this scene & by the next day Sato had come back to help repair the village after the storm. Even while he was still threatening Miyagi it was afterward that Sato realized 'Miyagi just risked his life to save mine'. @@redpyramid9697 Exactly.
Can't believe that Chozen disgraced himself and blamed Daniel for it. Good thing that he learned his lesson in Cobra Kai 3
I think what he was blaming in the moment was Daniel doing the heroic act. If anyone else did it, Chozen would't have to necessarily help them. Sato wanted to be even with Miyagi when it comes to help, so he in a way "needed" to send Chozen to help Daniel. To keep in short, in Chozen's mind, if Daniel never came to Japan and helped this girl, his honor never would've been disgraced; which is why he hates his sole existence.
I think Sato tried to send Chozen because he was clearly injured at the time and that rescue involved a climb which I doubt that he was in any shape to do

I love the way Sato has been training for years to break that plank of wood and then Miyagi does it first time.
Not the same wood but just as unyielding. The one on Sato's chest was the main roof beam, much wider than the one in his garden!
@@norbiesison9257 Also kind of hard to break it when you're pinned under it.
Who said it was his first time?
@@Tallahassee21 Daniel asks earlier in the film if he could do that and and he said don't know never have fight with log.
It was a clever way of letting us know that Miyagi would've won the fight. He refused to fight Sato because he didn't want to kill his friend.
When you read this movie right, Sato becomes an even more incredible character. Miyagi was his best friend, his virtual brother. Sato loved Miyagi. When proclaimed his love for Sato's arranged bride, honor trapped Sato into fighting Miyagi in a duel to the death. Neither of them wanted that. Miyagi fled. You will notice that Sato NEVER MARRIED YUKIE. He respected their love.
As long as Miyagi stayed away, Sato could live normally. It was only when Miyagi returned that Sato was forced by honor to resume their feud. He never wanted it. He still loved Miyagi like a brother. All of his anger was at the situation Miyagi oplaced him in, never at Miyagi himself. He gave Miyagi every chance to skip out again. "Visit your father" "Three days to mourn" "Leave message". Look no further than the scene where Miyagi visits Sato at his home. Sato is busy trying to break a 4x4. It is a piece of wood the two of them found together on the beach when they were young. Sato could have been doing anything when Miyagi arrived, but here he is beating on this board. This board represents their friendship, and Sato is outright showing Miyagi that he cannot break it. Hell, he's even enshrined the thing in his garden.
Then we have this scene, where Sato is trapped by a similar 4x4. He sees that Daniel and Miyagi are struggled to free him, so being a passionate man, he taunts them in order that their anger might give them extra strength. This is how he thinks. He doesn't really mean what he says here, he honestly thinks it will help. This time, the board represents what stands between Sato and Miyagi, and honor has dictated that Sato cannot break it. Miyagi can, by saving Sato's life, and so he does. Sato is freed from his honor, and you can see that in his immediate gratitude and heel-face turn into a hero.
Now go watch the movie again with this in mind, and see how brilliant it really is.
Sato is far from a bad guy in this movie. He was just upset. Even the fact that he returns with the deed to the village and apologizes. I’m glad we get to see that side of him.

if he thinks anger gives people strength i wouldn't be surprised if the fan theory that he taught karate to kreese and silver was true. cobra kai showed in a flashback that kreese learned taekwondo from his captain in vietnam but it's likely he went somewhere after to learn karate
Miyagi was on a similar path. He didn’t want to fight or kill Sato, and by leaving he is saying that their friendship is more important than love to him.
When Miyagi saves him, it finally gives Sato the chance to end the feud.

If anyone who thinks Chozen's redemption when he grew up is unbelievable, consider what Sato did here. He may have appeared that way but he wasn't really evil, he just let anger and bitterness take over his life for forty years and when Mr. Miyagi and Daniel risked their lives to save his, he let the anger and bitterness go and when Chozen tried to kill himself, he thought, "If I can learn to be a better person, I'm gonna show my nephew how to be one too." And that's what he did. And thirty years later, Chozen made both his uncle and Mr. Miyagi proud of him.

He then saw Daniel CONTINUE to risk his life further to help the girl, and tasked Chozen to assist. Chozen refused. To me, this is when Sato recognized how self-centered he was. @@danielhaire6677 Exactly. And it was honor, old-school style. Chozen humiliated Sato.
“I got you, old friend”🥺🥺🥺
I just realized something Miyagi never told Sato he knew the ridge hand technique because he didn't want to hurt Sato's pride....
Seeing that little girl all grown up and helping Daniel in Cobra Kai made me tear up.
The first time Sato is now being humbled by nature itself. And trapped under a plank almost identical to the one he was jabbing at when Miyagi confronted him the first time. Poetic writing and Sato redeemed himself while his protege' went rogue.
The plank was a symbolic representation of Sato trying to destroy the memories of his friendship with Miyagi when they were children. They both found it on the beach as a piece of driftwood as children. He spent years trying to smash it and failing, you can see this in the scene, as the top of the beam is worn away from repeated impacts. Sato's failure to break it was ultimately representative of the fact that underneath the misplaced hatred, Sato still cared for his old friend and maybe, deep down, he didn't want to succeed.
Great interpretation . but I think he could have broken that plank if he wanted to. He may have been practicing his stances , breathing and strikes . Not really with the intent on destroying his beam . I still never understood why Sato was so pissed because this was over a woman or a love triangle gone wrong. What men fight over blows my mind . Sato being blinded by anger was eating him away but his fortune was able to hide it and he passed his anger down to Chozan and destruction followed as a result .
Looking back at this and realizing that Yuna grows up to becoming Senior Vice President of Sales and saves Daniel's business and that Chozen redeemed himself, is pretty damn amazing!
ck s3 spoiler alert:
that little girl whom daniel rescued is now a businesswoman from doyona who saved daniel's car business.
He saved her life, she saved his livelihood.
@@FireMinstrel she returned the favor. And I was really happy when she appeared
Her teaching him to dance in the next scene
Daniel:Without you I'd look pretty stupid
Little girl:Without you I not be here
Ck spoiler alert: Kumiko still a smoke show
@@GibusLesPaul69420 that was a great twist. I liked that they brought them all together. I was touched by that
All the times I've seen this movie (more times than I can count) I thought Sato said to Miyagi, "you are lower than a thorn", but he really says, "you are lower than the storm".
Really?? I thought he said 'You are lower than a dog." I will have to listen again. :)
Sato helped Daniel save a young girl during a bad storm! Maybe there is still some good in Sato after all. He even helps rebuild the village once the storm is over.
Eternal gratitude is a powerful force.
I loved how Sato decided to change. I think he wanted to change earlier, but his stubbornness kept him from doing so just yet. He had been thinking about it, off & on, the whole time, I felt. I love the happy smile Sato has when he shows up to help them rebuild, he looks like he's 'free' from his own mire.
“Put good out into the world, and good will come back to you”
If only that little girl repaid Daniel in some way in the future :D
She does in cobra kai
And until then we thought she merely repaid him by teaching him the Obon dance.
You mercilessly want to spoil dont you? You want to ruin everyone's expectation on the series dont cha? Xd
@@sohammukherjee2738 that’s why I did the :D lol I watched it

"Put Good Into The World And Good Will Come Back To You"
It was at this moment that Sato had a change of heart.
How old do I feel now - I caught a bus with my sister in ‘86 to watch this in the cinema. I was 9 years old - I turned 44 a week ago
Sometimes what heart knows, head forgets.
For a person with no forgiveness in heart, living is far worse punishment than death.
Sato, despite being angry and embittered was always an honorable man.
I love how throughout the whole movie Mr Miyagi still calls Sato “old friend” even though they weren’t of good terms.
That hatred was really only on one side: Sato's.
PAT MORITA was a great actor. 🙏
Boy, saving that little girl sure helped in in the long run!
The guy next to Chozen mean mugging him..
I want my son to look at me the Way Daniel looks at Mr. Miyagi after he breaks the log on top of Sato
This was really exciting watching it in theaters in 1986 as a kid. I also thought Kumiko was beautiful and fascinating then. Here she even looks beautiful while in emotional distress.
It's been such a loooong time since I've seen this movie. 2 things... 1) was the girl up the ladder ringing that bell before the storm came? 2) To this day, I still wish Mr. Miyagi closed the door over at 4:20 lol
Looks like Mr. Miyagi finally attacked a tree but in the end he proved he was stronger than the tree due to both his Faith and his Concentration on saving his best friends life.
