What a great act. We used to watch this show all the time. TV today SUCKS. 400 channels with less quality programming than the 10 channels we had back in the day.
@@johnortmann3098 3 + PBS. In other words, 3. lol. (Actually, we’d acquired a couple of UHF channels by the late 60s. Also, PBS started running _Monty Python’s Flying Circus_ around '74, so I can’t _totally_ diss them!)
You never know what you are going to see when you click on anything on youtube. I didn't have anything better to do so I did click on this video. I was totally amazed by Hilary's comedy juggling and she definitely deserved to win that day. Thank you for the upload Michelle!!!
Incredible is what the Gong show really was back in the day. The proof is the fact of so many people having recorded the show on VCR. Kept the tapes for decades, then converted the data to digital format and uploading it online.....Chucky baby, you were ahead of your time!
This show was one of the all-time best! The ORIGINAL "Reality Show". I was a young child then, but still remember it so fondly. To whomever posted this, thank you ... and please, post more! ;)
Wow - very serious juggler, not sure why she was on The Gong Show. I can juggle and do several tricks, but to keep going like that, while singing - damn, incredible juggler.
I saw almost all the shows, but I don't remember this act, though I probably wouldn't have appreciated it as much at 13 or so. She was absolutely incredible - I'd guess she got a 30. I'd have liked to see the scoring, too, but that act was just all that and a bag of premium chips.
This clip combines Ms. Carlip's appearances on the daytime show on NBC with Barris and the syndicated nighttime version with Gary Owens (unseen). Notice the different backgrounds--multi-colored spotlights at 0:10 (daytime) and a curtain at 0:20 (nighttime). Many acts appeared on both versions.
When she said "I must be blind..." she rolled the ball over her eyes. When she said, "...behind my back..." she juggled behind my back. When she used the word "crotchety," she put a ball in her crotch area. "...hit it off..." she hit them with her elbows. "...Uor love is a bust..." Ball on chest. "Off my mind." Rolling ball off head. "...Out of my hair..." Ball in hair. Loved the Gong Show!
My memory is slightly photographic. I saw this the first night it aired way back when. She won that night. Her score was either 29 or 30. I'm not sure because one of the judges was Rex Reed, and he very rarely gave an act a 10.
I found another appearance by Hilary on the Nighttime version of The Gong Show where she was a lounge singer eating fire at the same time. Sadly, she only got a 24 and lost.
I actually remember seeing this when it aired. Not surprisingly, the camera cut away for"crotchety" snd and "bust"; all these years later, seeing the entire clip for the first time.
I think you're right. You can see at 1:48 that someone spliced in the "crotchety" part from another performance. The background and her handbag are different.
i watched this show as a kid in the 70's been watching the videos on here tonight after watching about 10 videos. This is the first one ive seen with some Talent. most are Just alot of odd corny acts
Great observations Nancy. Yes, time will tell. Although not cut & dried, upon reflection of major life choices it usually comes down to one of three things for each one of us... so very glad I did, thank goodness I did not or really wish I had. Sondre & Tanya are both intelligent & thoughtful individuals and will figure it out themselves.
When she kicked the ball, she said "I get a kick when he's around." And the juggling was in a circular motion when she said "around." She sid "...off the ground..." and bounced the ball off the floor." When she "...he's always on my mind..." she rolled the ball over her head. "...I find that a bit hard to swallow..." She put the balls under chin. Whe she said "I need him," she hit it with her knee, etc.
I used to sit on the floor in front of my parents' fireplace, smoking dope and blowing the smoke up the chimney while watching this counterculture masterpiece of a show. "Gene, Gene the dancing machine!"
Great performance! But I wonder what’s up with the (obvious) edit after 1:50? The curtains disappear, the purse on the chair is in a different position, etc.; after which, everything switches back as before.
They can never do any better than re-airing every original program in chronological order Attempting to re-create the Gong Show with the current "woke" nonsense will be an embarrassing insult
It would be easy to reboot this show today. Keep it a low budget, campy, production..... and syndicate local/regional satellite versions all around the world using local emcees and local contestants. Hell, do it on RUclips. 🤦♂️ I realize that Chuck had a special talent for this, but there are talented, underutilized funny people who would audition for the gig. 🤣 Ha! The debut episode could be the audition tapes for the emcee spot. Who owns the copyright? Edit: I loved Hillary's act! 🖤
Thank you for posting. Does anybody know where I might be able to get old Gong Show episodes, either VHS or DVD? I would buy anything I could get my hands on, even stuff with fairly sketchy picture and sound quality. I love this show, still.

@@tonymanzo3766Yes, but with the calmly laid back Johnny Jacobs hosting, not the annoyingly exaggerated freneticism of Barris.
I'm sitting here clapping for her. That was absolutely fantastic!!!!
As someone with a little juggling experience I can tell you, everything she did was very challenging-and as we can see-very well done.
Especially with studio lights!
Wow what a great act ! Boy do I miss that show.
No idea why this randomly popped up in suggested videos, but I'm so glad. Laughed myself silly. I give the act and The Gong Show a 10.
Great show, there is nothing on TV today nearly as good.
Hillary, you rule! I was a preteen back in the late 70s, and addicted to the Gong Show. Your act was brilliant.
It is now 2022. Do you even remember posting this comment back in what... 2006?
One of the best performances on this show I've ever seen.
I have forgotten how great the Gong Show really was.
After decades of pure garbage, the Gong Show really shines brightly, doesn't it?
Brings back memories of sitting around the frat house drinking beer and watching the Gong Show. It was very popular.

this 1 act out does american idols entire season
And without a commercial break.
Bring back the gong show. Period.
Can't. All the principles are dead.

Chuck is the best host in history
That is one of the cleverest things I've ever seen!
This was THE BEST ACT EVER on this show!
I enjoyed the monster who once came out singing, "I gotta be me!"..(Nice voice!)😊❤
Always brings a smile to my face. Sampler times. Great show.

Very observant. I never noticed it until you pointed it out. I was too mesmerized by her performance.
The most entertaining juggling act I've ever seen.
Better than anything I've seen on tv now!
really!

Queen of the Oddballs indeed.
wow you will never see an act like that today, man those were the days
I saw this episode when it originally aired--they did a sudden cutaway to the panel when she did the "crotchety" part.
I met Hillary in 1973 with a production called " Bimbo's Cosmic Circus"
This is a true " gong show" act. Very original.
What an act! 👍👍👍
