76 all decked out and a top of the range camper trailer for touring you still got change deck out a 79 And van nearly twice the price

This works perfect, I use my Fortuner as a daily to commute to work and loading the boot on week ends, so kitting the back out doesn't work at all, But having a fully kitted out off-road trailer makes it very easy, plus I have a roof rack for the awnings and some jerry's

Great comparison! Totally understand the extra $$ for the 79..... that’s why we’ve gone for the 76 personally. Think they’re also a little better suited to daily duties.

At the end, I’ll pick the 78 Troopy... it’s long enough to carry lots of stuff and also you can use the back as a living space if you install the Alu Cab Hercules rooftop conversion.

Even though I love wagons and the look of the 76, to future proof it like yourself, I’d have to go the 79. More versatile and can be kitted out to suit anyone’s needs.

I've been looking at a lot of reviews lately as I'm looking for a new truck I've driven both a 79 and a 76 and I've gotta say I'd rather get a Oka at this stage solves all the gvm fuel and space issues from factory and actually works out to be the same amount of money if not cheaper depending on what you kit out

    76
    - coil rear
    - portals
    - 35s ATs (BFG for life)
    - set up with drawers and a fridge
    - PVS wheel and dash
    - EmuWing Rear access
    - Li Set up
    - Northcoast RV Trailer
    - a heap more but I’ll be here all day.

Understand money doesnt grow on trees but, would be great if you could keep the 76 and do a 2.0 build. Seeing as you have had it for years, to rebuild build a awesome 76 tourer from that experience would be awesome to see (engine upgrades, coils in the rear, updated electrical and updated rear set up). Plus would be cool to see a 70 series Explore 4x4 fleet, each build for specific style trip 👌

I'd take the 79, because if I needed just a wagon like what 76 is, I would rather go for LC200 instead of missing out on automatic transmission and other luxuries you would miss out on with any typical 70 series, but if you are in need of a cab chassis ute, it won't be available as a 200 series, 79 would be your only choice if you need Landcruiser.

Without your sponsorship freebies. Well done on the freebies, but keep it real, a $ amount just keeps it real for us, the viewing public.

I have a 76 and 2 kids. As mentioned, they're limited with space, as with most wagons you need a trailer when touring with kids. In terms of picking a 79 instead, I'm done with the 70 series. Too much $ to get them setup really well so I'm heading to a Y62. They are cheap as chips compared to a 70 when you factor in all the mods you need to do, even when considering the cost of petrol

Hi there - didn’t catch your name but good intro review - from several years experience of owning wagons I would suggest that the 79 is a no-brainer for the following reasons - I had several Subarus for daily driving and touring but always frustrated with lack of space and having to move several items to get setup for stops or camping - also had limited options for jerry cans and water storage - turning circle was impressive and fuel economy was good until I went for Turbo Foresters - so now after much research I’ve jumped to the 4WD world with a pre-DPF 2010 Diesel Toyota Hilux Auto and just installed an Aluminium tray/canopy - turning circle not good but for touring it will be awesome with everything out of the vehicle to the rear where it belongs and you’re the first person to ever mention the fantastic sun/rain protection for those roadside breaks - John in SA
