I had to go check 😮 It took me a bit to find it in the upper left corner struggling along. Intrepid little thing, isn't it? Trying to make a web in all those shavings.
I can do none other, then admire your craftmanship and creativity, For every problem you find a solution. I used to be a woodworker too. I wish, I had your tools and machinery. I had to do it all by hand.
Beautiful piece Mike, yew never fails to impress and you did a great job considering the quality of the piece of wood, well turned buddy, Cheers from will 👍🙂
I don't know how you did it while feeling ill, but you managed to produce a fantastic platter out of a really tricky turning. I prefer the finish on the winged bowl and the more natural curves of the platter. But to be honest both are wonderful, it just boils down to personal taste.
Yew is undeniably one of the most beautiful timbers in the world. You've done a brilliant job with both halves of that yew crotch. The platter reminds me of a baseball catcher's mitt.
@@MikeHolton Yes please for real-time shots.i so enjoy feeling as though I’m standing right there, smelling the wood (though not yew!). BTW, I’m team platter! The shape and curves with the sweep of woodgrain evoke a gentle stream or swells in a quiet ocean cove.
Thanks Brian, glad someone mentioned it. I got another camera last week just so I could keep one there as I thought it would be a good place to film. 😃
I’m in absolute awe of your work. It does help that the wood you’re working with is so beautiful. I’m sure my father would have loved these videos if he could ever have become used to modern technologies such as RUclips. 😊
🤔decisions decisions - I can’t call between the two 😂 It always amazes me how different a tree can be in halves. No apologies needed re voice, it’s life but I’m glad you’re feeling better than you were 😊
This one. You’ve made the most of the gorgeous yew in both pieces. I think I like turned wood mostly for the rounded shapes and curves and the first piece went “against my grain” with the straight edges. My eyes are happier looking at this one. Thanks for sharing your wonderful work!
😊these pieces are so different but absolutely beautifull. I love yew wood. Poisonous but a lovely pair of bowls with glorious colours. Strange how two pieces come from one piece are so different. Well done. JC.😊
Hi Mike, this was great to watch as the platter change on every turn. Again you resolved all the evil twin challenges to turn a stunning platter with a gorgeous #3 finish, Thanks for the video hope your health improves, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Yes, it certainly is pretty…so very different than it’s “better half”😅 Amazing work, Sir. Truthfully, I think my favorite is the second one…the evil half🥴….tho I wouldn’t turn away either one.
Love them both equally but I'd say the platter would be my choice. The gaps from the branching really show how thin the piece is and highlights the gentle curve. The harder the challenge, the greater the reward. Well done, love it. :)
Wow! I had no idea how different two halves of the same wood piece could be! So glad you saw it through. I'm really learning a lot about perseverance from you, so this is great. Thank you so much. By the way, your voice sounds fine to me.😊
I love how two relatively identical shaped pieces of wood can turn out completely different and beautiful. When I run into structural cracks like that I chisel in a spline or mini "bowtie" to secure the crack. Sometimes I use my biscuit machine to cut the groove then I make a rounded spline to glue in.
Glad you protected yourself from injuries on pieces of yew! Sorry, yet another pun. I think I’m hard pressed to choose my favorite. If I had to, it’s the winged bowl for the design and the time consuming finish. Really love them both! Feel better soon. Joe CA
I think the "EVIL TWIN" complements the type of wood. I have no particular preference as they are both really nice in their own rights. Just nice to see wood not being wasted in the pursuance of Art. Nice one Mike. Cheers
Beautiful platter Mike. Love the grain and the shape. Always an interesting journey watching you turn these. Both pieces are beautiful, and each brings out the beauty in the wood.
Hello Mike. Sorry to hear you are under the weather - do look after yourself. When I saw it was going to be the second piece of yew, I thought “Great - see yew two! Here we go.” And it certainly doesn’t disappoint. The first piece you turned was beautiful, and so is this one. Both are similar and wonderfully different at the same time - and I would not be able to say which is better. But thank you for turning both pieces and within a timeframe where the first was still current so a proper compare and contrast could be done. Great job! Have a good week and I shall look forward to your next eye-opener.
Mike Holton 1 - Combined Wooden Forces of Evil 0 Great adventure. I was a little bit worried in the beginning, but once you neutraliserad their cracking technique I knew you would pull it of in the home stretch
I like the figuring and grain structure in the yew, think my favourite of the two is the bowl, but both are really nice. If I can get any when I'm back in the UK I might be tempted to give some a go. My wife is never happy when I unload the car when back in Spain and she gets to see all the space I've used up with wood, tools and other turning paraphernalia that could have been used "better". Ha... Happy days.
That looks wonderful, please do take time to get better as you will also be able to make more content once you are well. And giving your self that time to heal is definitely needed.
Well I liked the winged bowl...till the evil twin showed up. Bravo for sticking with it. Try and get well, and thanks for showing up when you aren't feeling top form. Thanks Mike
I have to say that both of them are beautiful, but I think the first one just pips the race to the post for me. Both have had their complexities and real difficulties because of the word but you have knocked them both out of the park in totally different ways but as I said, I think the first one just has the edge over the both. As always amazing wood churning and I would gladly have them both in my house :-)
Beautiful. I find o have a bit of jealousy every time you guys turn a bit of yew. Such beautiful wood. You did a great job of turning this evil twin. It came out quite lovely.

I named him Sydney. 😀

Thanks Rachel, the finish on the first one took 2-3 days so no time to do it on the second as I only finished yesterday afternoon lol 😃
@@MikeHolton Fair enough. I often prefer the softer finish anyway. It feels more natural and earthy. But that yew really shines

You are right, it does! 😃
