When I first seen the piece I thought, surely he’s not going to fill that with resin. Then when you started, I had visions of it flying off the lathe. Wow, what a lovely piece of art. I think you could use it for holiday themed centerpiece, changing the scene inside and the flower for the particular holiday.
Found your channel by complete accident and now I am addicted, my late father was a woodsman/Carpenter, sadly I never followed in his footsteps but watching you brings back so many memories and smells of wood in his workshop. Thank you for this, amazing work you do.
Talk about an edge of the seat nail biter !!! You took something most people would just toss in the fire and made a really stunning vase with all kinds of character. Well done sir !!!
I love it! Reminds me of a Christmas bauble that has an indented silvered centre. I would perhaps go a little further with the make to create a lamp with the actual bulb inside it, maybe even adding a little glitter somehow (mixing with the shellac?) to add that extra touch of sparkle. Beautiful piece.
Mike, Once again, you have proven that almost any piece of wood can be turned into something beautiful. Oh, that one man trash is another mans treasure. Thanks
It was fascinating to watch as you turned an awkward lump of intriguing wood into a thing of beauty. Do appreciate your pointed efforts regarding safety measures.
I could see straight away the difficulties you might have had with this piece, and I could understand your apprehension. However, you mastered it. I love it! It’s so incongruous having the smooth polished wood on the outside and the rough untouched surface inside. With the hole in the middle it’s like a window on nature. It’s totally beautiful and unique. Well done Mike, it’s a masterpiece xx
You aren't a wood-turner. You are an artist working magic on wood pieces! That was a gorgeous video, shot so well and from so many angles. You have really upped your game in the new shop. I know you say it was nerve-wracking, but it was worth the risk!! It's beautiful. ❤
Love that it's not a run of the mill turn (not that your creations are ROTM!) Reading all the comments, I think this piece lends itself to so many different presentations. I'm sure it will speak to you in time. Stunning in its uniqueness Mike, thank you. Really love this.
...I've always believed that saving firewood to turn into something useful or beautiful was a win, but oh, man...what you did with that piece is a miracle!!! Matt
A beautiful piece of organic art. A resemblance of an acorn that has been sitting on the woodland floor for a long time. Nature is speaking through your hands. It was calling to you, just waiting for you to pick to up.
In the beginning I could not envisage how this piece would eventually look but yet again you have made a beautiful piece which could be a beautiful center piece adorning either a sideboard or a center piece for a table be it a dining , coffee or corner table. Well done Mike love it
I'm very impressed, Mike. I would never have thought you could turn that piece let alone make something so stylish out of it! Loved the hissing snake sketch. It gave me a good chuckle. Thanks for keeping it in the video. Shame you didn't scream!
Love it!! I could see this with an elegant bulb inside, lit up in a London Knightsbridge's shop window with a £1500 tag along side a sold sicker on it! A beautifully crafted unique piece. Well done Mr Holton, you've done it again!.✌
Absolutely beautiful. I actually really liked the tiny neck you had on it. These sorts of pieces are my favorite. Im not ashamed to say that I Jumped in my seat when that air hose jettisoned itself away I can only imagine the shock being there in person.
I would be lost with that big lump and proberbly halved it , but you surprised me , TURNED out really nice , i think i wood put a bulb in it , Well done Mike another masterpiece 👏👏👏👏
As you said, that was indeed a major challenge. So happy "Murphy" was occupied somewhere else. So many instances where I thought the wood may fall apart. Consider the clear plastic wrap which only sticks to itself to hold something together. This stretches but hard to break. Masking tape can break easily. Very well done. Dave.
A modified terrarium with some succulents and a small light in the top. 😮😮😮 I always look forward to your next project, always beautiful and entertaining. ❤ PS Can’t wait for the mail to arrive today 🎉🎉🎉.
You did a really good job with this, and deserve to be proud. I've always been fascinated by the remnants of a tree that hold together even as the rest is rotting around it. I've tried to make cool stuff out of this type of wood a number of times. The only sure thing, is that having undertaken this work, you have gained knowledge and confidence in your craft. The fact that the piece turned out to be lovely is a bonus. Feed and Wax is my favorite, too. Side note, I went down in the woods yesterday a bit and cut a bunch of material to tackle on the lathe. One piece in particular is a bit of red oak that has been laying in a pile that I cut 5 or six years ago and forgot to take in. I found a crotch that I had specifically cut to work on left on the top of the pile. I sectioned off the top which was punky, and a bit of the bottom as well, so it will be more of a platter. Its collected a huge amount of color from the spalting. I'm excited to see what I can make out of it. Cross my fingers!
I'm very inspired, next time i visit my local tree surgeons i'll take a much longer look at the more oddly shaped lumps. You make me want to challenge myself! Great Vid
Hi Mike, I am very impressed with what you’ve achieved with this project I have to admit I would have been worried about it flying off at any point, well done
Hi Mike. I like your philosophy and you have produced a lovely work of art - not everything has a specific ‘use’. Congratulations on the early success of Northern grit, especially as my favourite shop is stocking it. And your sanding didn’t take long because I timed it at 20 seconds. Have a great week 🌞
I first thought you were going to put a pine filler in the middle and fill it with resin , with the cheap pine being turned away... But this works too .. Awesome job again Mike !!!
Wow, that's some stones turning that :D ... all those cracks made me discount turning it as a whole, my initial thought was to split it in half and have 2 open bowls. Beautifully done.
Brave, working a piece like that. With the crack going down the side, was expecting it to split in two, throwing chunks God knows where. But you pulled it off.
woo hoo, first comment!!! i smiled when you were talking about how you were tired of being afraid of it, and just decided to go for it. not sure how this ends yet, but i know it will be lovely!
Absolutely stunning. I was thinking of doing a similar piece in my Live today, but I think I’ll modify my plan and do this after the first of the year. You did a great job with this crazy piece of wood.
At first I thought you were either brave or stupid. A wonderful piece that has inspired me to turn some similar, albeit smaller pieces that I have in the wood pile for the stove.
Hi Mike amazing transformation, it cries out for you to insert a low wattage light source to add a nice golden glow inside to compliment the beautiful outer colour
That darn air hose would have most certainly given me a heart attack😄 I was skeptical at first about this piece, but you always seem to come through with something beautiful!😄 I could see this as a sort of planter or made into a terrarium with a light source from above. Just my 2 cents worth 😊
When I first seen the piece I thought, surely he’s not going to fill that with resin. Then when you started, I had visions of it flying off the lathe.
Wow, what a lovely piece of art.

Thanks Barry, that is a great idea! 😀
The person that has never failed has never done anything.
Very wise words Stephen 😀
Found your channel by complete accident and now I am addicted, my late father was a woodsman/Carpenter, sadly I never followed in his footsteps but watching you brings back so many memories and smells of wood in his workshop. Thank you for this, amazing work you do.
One man’s firewood is another man’s art!
Excellent work!
I didn't think anything beautiful would come from that piece, but you proved me wrong. Well done.
Thanks Diana, it could have gone either way, I guess I got lucky 😀
Talk about an edge of the seat nail biter !!! You took something most people would just toss in the fire and made a really stunning vase with all kinds of character. Well done sir !!!

Thanks Edward, at the moment it is a blank canvas and I will decide later if it is to become a lamp. Love your ideas though, thanks 😀
Wow, didn't think you'd get anything out of that bit of wood but yet again you saw the hidden gem. Beautiful 🎉
Mike, Once again, you have proven that almost any piece of wood can be turned into something beautiful. Oh, that one man trash is another mans treasure. Thanks
So true, thanks Bryce 😀
Wonderful love the vase that holds one's imagination!
Thanks so much Beth 😀
I love how this turned out. I could look at that all day. It's fascinating and gorgeous!
Thanks so much! 😀
It was fascinating to watch as you turned an awkward lump of intriguing wood into a thing of beauty. Do appreciate your pointed efforts regarding safety measures.
Good morning Mike! Once again you are showing the magic within the woods you work with!THANKS AGAIN! Cheryl in Jacksonville❤🎉
Good morning and thanks Cheryl 😁
I could see straight away the difficulties you might have had with this piece, and I could understand your apprehension. However, you mastered it. I love it! It’s so incongruous having the smooth polished wood on the outside and the rough untouched surface inside. With the hole in the middle it’s like a window on nature. It’s totally beautiful and unique. Wow thanks so much Lindsey 😀

Thanks so much Matilda and thanks for noticing the improvements. I try hard to make each video better than the one before 😀
I am just stunned. Never thought that hunk of wood would turn into something like that! Wow , i am impressed!!!
Thanks Nana, I am happy with this one 😀
Love that it's not a run of the mill turn (not that your creations are ROTM!)
Reading all the comments, I think this piece lends itself to so many different presentations. I'm sure it will speak to you in time.
Stunning in its uniqueness Mike, thank you.
Really love this.
Thanks so much Fiona, I'll try and let out a scream for you next time 😀
I love walnut. Being able to envision a piece out of the original chunk is a gift, beautiful work
Thanks so much Eric 😀
...I've always believed that saving firewood to turn into something useful or beautiful was a win, but oh, man...what you did with that piece is a miracle!!!
Matt
Glad you enjoyed it Matt and thanks 😁
A beautiful piece of organic art. A resemblance of an acorn that has been sitting on the woodland floor for a long time. Nature is speaking through your hands. It was calling to you, just waiting for you to pick to up.
Wow thanks so much Wes! 😀
In the beginning I could not envisage how this piece would eventually look but yet again you have made a beautiful piece which could be a beautiful center piece adorning either a sideboard or a center piece for a table be it a dining , coffee or corner table. Well done Mike love it
Thank you so much Joyce😀
That piece looked like it had already been firewood, and you turned it into a real beautiful piece of art. Thanks for sharing Mike.
You're welcome, haha that made me laugh 😀
I'm very impressed, Mike. I would never have thought you could turn that piece let alone make something so stylish out of it! Loved the hissing snake sketch. It gave me a good chuckle. Thanks for keeping it in the video. Shame you didn't scream!
Thank you very much Rachel, I was close to screaming 😀
Lol yeah a scream would have been top notch Rachel 😂
@@fionacrouch1732 Really Fiona!!!
@MikeHolton Yes, really, Mike! Lol
You missed a trick there
Love it!! I could see this with an elegant bulb inside, lit up in a London Knightsbridge's shop window with a £1500 tag along side a sold sicker on it! A beautifully crafted unique piece. Well done Mr Holton, you've done it again!.✌
Thanks so much my friend, it may still end up as a lamp 😀
Beautiful piece Mike!!! I wouldn’t be afraid of failure with that. Stitches is what I would fear 😂😂
shattered collarbone, perhaps
Haha thanks Marty, I took all the care I could 😀
Wow! That turned out just beautiful! Amazing results.
Thanks Jonny 😀
Well done, sir. Absolutely gorgeous.
Thanks Timothy 😀
This is my favorite piece you’ve done so far Mike. Thanks so much for sharing your creations
Glad you enjoy it Anthony 😀
Absolutely beautiful. I actually really liked the tiny neck you had on it. These sorts of pieces are my favorite. Im not ashamed to say that I Jumped in my seat when that air hose jettisoned itself away I can only imagine the shock being there in person.
Haha thanks Jordan, it did give me a bit of a jump 🤣
I would make something for the interior with soft lighting and still use it as a vase also. I'm very much in love with this creation!
Great idea and thanks Amy 😀
Now that was a challenge! Well done Mike. It turned out fabulous. I'm glad you didn't paint the inside. Natural inside and out looks the best. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it Robert and I agree about the inside, although if it was a lamp, gold foil would look great in there! 😀
Wow. That was an adventure. And a beautiful end product
Thanks so much David 😀
I just had images of Mike kicking a hollow log around the workshop and hurting his foot! 😂😂
Haha, steel capped boots help 😀
@@MikeHolton 😂

Outstanding piece! And very well presented. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you kindly Jim 😀
Lovely rescue. You can tell you thought about this for a long time.
Thanks Alicia, sometimes you have to live with a piece of wood until the right idea comes 😀
As you said, that was indeed a major challenge. So happy "Murphy" was occupied somewhere else. So many instances where I thought the wood may fall apart.

Wow I would have been scared of that too. not so much scared of it killing me as scared of ruining it. This is amazing Mike, really well done.
Thanks so much Greg 😀
Perfect paper towel dispenser before the turning
Haha it really was 🤣
I would have walked past all day long it is stunning the finnish

Thanks, I agree and it may yet become one 😀
I have a piece of red oak with a similar situation. Thanks for the inspiration. Truly, a beautiful piece.
You're welcome Michael, keep safe 😀
Had faith that you would turn out something unique and beautiful. Still not sure what the heck to call it, but it IS unique and beautiful!
Haha me neither, thanks Barbara 🤣
I'm very inspired, next time i visit my local tree surgeons i'll take a much longer look at the more oddly shaped lumps. You make me want to challenge myself! Great Vid
Thanks so much, to be honest, being challenged is by far the best way to learn and improve 😀
That would look lovely with some Holly and tinsel in it.❤❤😊

You're welcome 😀
Nice one Mike. Another hole in one.
Haha thanks my friend 😀
I was sure that was going to explode. Very nice piece, a bit Henry Moore. Once again I am in awe of your tool control.
Thank you very much Edward 😀
Wow that looks amazing, I wasn't to sure what it would look like at the end.
Neither did I 😀
Hi Mike, I am very impressed with what you’ve achieved with this project I have to admit I would have been worried about it flying off at any point, well done
You and me both, thanks Deano 😀
That is so cool.
Thanks! 😄
Great salvage Mike. Very unique looking piece out of what would normally be firewood. I may have to give that a try.
Thanks and good luck! 😀
Very nice! I thought you was going to go multi axis at first, but you just let it take its own shape...good call!🏆
Thanks Chris, multi axis would be cool!! I wonder . . . . I'm off to find another 😀

I would put an LED light chain/fairy lights inside. Lovely!
Great idea, thanks 👍
I admire you for attempting that , personally if it had been in my workshop it would have gone in the log burner lol
Haha thanks Robert 😀
I love that piece, Mike. I was wondering what you would make, and you did a brilliant t job. Well done. 😊 xxx

I wait with great anticipation for your videos. Another beautiful piece of art.
Thanks so much Barbara 😀
I would have been scared too 😅 with this piece of wood but it turned out well. Beautiful!
Thanks Eva 😄
That is lovely, I totally would have done a see-through resin in the centre and made it into a mood lamp
That would be cool ☺️
You are very brave
Haha thanks 😀
Brave, working a piece like that. With the crack going down the side, was expecting it to split in two, throwing chunks God knows where. But you pulled it off.
Thanks Thomas, just take one step at a time and keep your face shield on lol 😀
An intriguing creation. It could be used as a Christmas centrepiece with a floral display inside ut.
It could! Thanks Keith 😀
This was like watching "Apollo 13"; you know it's going to be OK, but your on the edge of your seat the whole time, caught up in the action.
Haha thanks Jake 😀
Very cool
Thanks Donnie 😀

We do indeed Charles, well said 😀

Thanks Kathleen 😀
That darn air hose would have most certainly given me a heart attack😄 I was skeptical at first about this piece, but you always seem to come through with something beautiful!😄 I could see this as a sort of planter or made into a terrarium with a light source from above. Just my 2 cents worth 😊

Unbelievable Mike. I wish I had 1/10th of your imagination.
Thanks so much 😊

Strangely different good Sir. . . . 🤪🥰
