    I think it's a mix of all three, sm is known for treating their foreign idols poorly, and with Giselle's scandal, it's easier to treat her poorly on camera because alot of people don't like her and can justify sm's behavior as some sort of weird justice

      What about Ningning? She’s Chinese.. she’s getting the same treatment as Karina/Winter but guess what it wasn’t the same at the beginning Ningning and Giselle were receiving less appreciation because of their weight (I didn’t even realize until ‘fans’ mentioned at the beginning) ridiculous imo they look normal for me. I realized after Ningning loss weight (which again it was the fans who pointed it out cause to me she was the same) she was being more appreciated and receiving the same treatment as Karina/Winter. But Giselle is different after being body shamed I feel like she became less confident (just compare her debut fancam and the last ones) she performs different than before and you can tell she tries to hide her face. That’s not the Giselle I knew and love from the beginning (yes she’s also my favorite member) her raps deliver so much confidence in MVs but when she performs on TV is different, is not her. I blame the stylist and SM for this. She doesn’t deserve this treatment a part of me wishes she would quit and join another company that appreciates her talents 😪

    Giselle's "disappearance" has more to do with the attitude of SM's own employees than with discrimination from the public. When she debuted, I attributed that "disappearance" to her obvious differences of dance skills with her classmates (because she was a trainee for less time) but when she improved, I noticed that the company continued to give her the worst wardrobes and made "mistakes" when promoting to Giselle. Currently, she is being "washed out" of her by giving her makeup and wardrobe similar to Karina. There's an interesting theory that Giselle's stepfather is Lee Soo-man and SM employees are "disappearing" her because they consider her a nepo-girl.

      Highly doubt she's LSM stepdaughter. The previous rumor surrounding her was that her aunt was secretly LSM's gf. Now she's suddenly his stepdaughter? Sounds like just another made up rumor to justify her mistreatment. It's likely just SM's crappy, crappy mismanagement that's been plaguing the company for actual decades now, but it turns out worse for Giselle since she's foreign AND the least popular member.
      SM is actually losing tons of staff rn due to the company going to 💩 since the Kakao buyout last year. Lots of their established, popular acts are leaving the company. It's not looking good for SM, tbh.

    There’s also the possibility that SM does it on purpose so that Giselle gains “pity stans.” This is similar to what happens to idols like Liz, in which people feel bad for her because she gets less lines, screen time, etc (which was proven incorrect once people dug deeper into it) so people give her more attention and Stan her

    • @GopherCakeStuff

      possible, but knowing its SM, i highly doubt it. im not sure if youre an sm stan or just someone who happens to know a thing or two, but SM doesnt have the best rep when it comes to taking care their foreigners idol. look at nct, riize, etc. and not only their foreigners idol, but i think some of their korean idols too (ex: exo (cmiiw), red velvet)

    • @katgreer6113
      @katgreer6113 5 месяцев назад +23

      yeah, no. Highly unlikely. SM doesn't care about their artists. Even the ones that bring in good money sometimes. I've been stanning some of their artists since 2016 and I can tell you that ANY artist under this company will tell you that it sucks ass. Just recently I think, a fan told Wendy from Red Velvet that they want to join SM and she literally told them: "NO!" The same thing happened with Kun from NCT too and he said, "There are better places."
      There's a reason SM has gotten sued by their own artists multiple times and still continues to get sued. They never learn.
      Besides from that, they are notorious for treating their foreign artists even worse. There are multiple theories out there that says "SM never wants to let their artists grow bigger than them." aka "SM wants to be more powerful and more popular than their own artists."
      This theory is true. Whenever there's a scandal (true or fake ass rumours) SM will literally leave their artists to be picked apart like cotton and let the public destroy them. Also, seeing as Giselle was the least popular member from the start, there's 0% chance they are gonna put in any effort to market her properly or help her get "pity stans." They've put 90% of their money into Karina and Winter (koreans) and couldn't care what happens to anyone else. Sorry, harsh truths.

  • @margielalover
    @margielalover 5 месяцев назад +27

    I liked this video very much because I do agree that Giselle's mistreatment needs to be talked about more. There's a lot of evidence of Giselle being neglected by SM, and Korean brands and fans since debut (a year before her mouthing the nword and apologizing for it) and that trickled down into international fans because it's hard to bias someone you don't see enough of - there was significantly less fansites of Giselle from debut when compared to her members and that was huge blocker in potential new fans getting to support her in the early days. Giselle's lines in Black Mamba were basically non-existent and that trend followed her throughout her career so far in their title tracks and title tracks are the most important thing in kpop because that's where the music video is and casual fans and non-fans all tune in and find their favorite members and moments from that so Giselle got a lack of exposure from the very beginning. Also during debut there were a lot of malicious rumors about Giselle's past, her family background, and how she got into SM - all of which has now been proven wrong by Giselle herself last year during Drama's promotions but the problem is it's 3 years too late... SM failed her so bad, they should've cleared up these rumors when it started and put out a statement about taking legal action.

    • @margielalover
      @margielalover 5 месяцев назад +5

      But it isn't all bad, Giselle has been making her name in the fashion world lately and brands have been going crazy over her - she manages to gain and maintain popularity while being the member who gets the least from her company. Kpop fans throw around the word racism like it's a very insignificant thing these days but the fact of the matter is what Giselle did was ignorant given the context, she had no malicious intent towards anyone from mouthing lyrics to a song and she rightfully apologized. About the n-word and Giselle proficiency in English. I find it very amusing when k-pop stans believe that their rich and privileged idols would be racially educated because they went to an international school in Asia. Guys, come on. People in America misuse this word, do you think that a half-Korean half-Japanese rich girl who was educated in a Catholic school in Tokyo would be educated in the history and sensibility of the n-word? If this is your expectation, then racism should've been resolved by now.

      This, it's so out-of-touch and US-centric imo. Like yeah, the word has an awful meaning and should never have come out of Giselle's mouth, but at the end of the day, someone who learned English fluently from a Catholic school in Asia (not even at an American school) is not necessarily going to be educated on the word's full cultural and historical dimensions, especially when it's a word that, in spite of its violence, comes up so frequently in music and general pop culture. Understanding all the nuance behind this word and who can/cannot use it already requires a pretty sophisticated knowledge of American racial history and post-Civil War race relations, which I would not expect a foreign idol who dropped out of school to have. I mean, do all the Americans who are getting this upset have a survey knowledge of the history and demographic tensions of every other country? Most of these fans don't even know more than one language lmao. Which is not to defend Giselle's usage of the word; like again, it's bad, but she sincerely apologized, brought attention to her mistake publically, and hopefully learned (and taught others!) through her mistake. Going so far as to say "she can't possibly recover from that" just reinforces a really unproductive and uncritical form of cancel culture

I didn't know about Giselle's mistreatment, actually I thought that she is the most hated member due to her background-being rich, but I think that as soon as the group gain more popularity this will change because everyone will get attention from the public.

    It's not because of giselle being half japanese!!! in korea people are equally racist and hateful towards china too, so it does not make sense that thats the reason people were leaving giselle out of the group. It was probably to get the group attention or maybe the company is bullying here for a certain reason. we do not know but saying shes being left our for being half japanese when ning ning is full chinese is laughable.
    not hating you!!! I just wanted to share that as someone who has been back and forth to south korea with korean friends and a partner, from my experience I always here a random racist comment about the chinese even when china has nothing to do with our conversation. your talk about korea being under japanese control is all great so I applaude you for that but there is also a deep hatred being korea and china historically too. so saying giselle is the only member being ignored for her being half japanese is 99% false.

    When I started getting into kpop I was a massive BTS fan and my bias was Jin, and I kept getting angry because this kind of thing where one individual photo was missing, or someone was cut out it was always Jin. Then I got into Blackpink and biased Jisoo, and she was also the one that had similar things happening to her. So my theory now is just that they overlook the least biased people in the groups in order to gain more attention by promoting the most liked members (it would make sense since Jin and Jisoo had the least stans at the time, and if I’m not wrong it is also Giselle’s case)

    When I first got into kpop I never noticed the discrimination towards certain foreign idols because my ult groups at the time was TREASURE, TWICE and BLACKPINK and it was confusing when I learned about the whole discrimination thing because those groups have foreign members but everyone loves them so much like- Lisa, Haruto and Momo are foreign members but they are one of the most popular and most biased members in the group! It's just interesting how certain groups and certain companies treat their foreign idols 🤔 I think Jyp and Yg are much better at promoting them then Sm is, because even in NCT there has been weird discrimination going on 😾

She is fluent in english and has mentioned she has a diverse friend group in combination with what we have seen of her personality I highly doubt that she would intentionally say it. If it was any other group or idol it would have been a different story but since aespa was a major threat to other ggs at the time and ppl decided she was "ugly" and a "dozen" (neither of which are true) it caused a hate train so bad she lost all her confidence and in an interview asked her future self is she was still alive. Not necessarily defending what she did, but "speaking English" fluently is a far cry from being familiar with another country's controversial history. She didnt live a day in the US, and I wouldnt be surprised if her high school didnt cover more than a chapter about American black history. Sure she attended an international school, but this is Japan we're talking about - where they even sweep 80% of WWII under the rug. Like for example, how much do you think the avg American knows about the Ainu in Japan?

      Yeah, I agree with the contents of the other reply and I am taking your view point into account. I was disgusted when I learnt of the racism incident (as I did with finding out about many other similar ones not to do with her) but I hope that now she's been to America and met her fans and learnt something about other cultures, she won't make the same mistake. Maybe that's just wishful thinking but I do see that she should/ it would be good for her image to have shown some progress with her education on other races and the mistreatment of black people in history.
      I understand that still not everyone will forgive her and that's reasonable. However, if we are talking about Giselle as a person or image, I try to treat people fairly when talking about social issues such as discrimination, which she has definitely faced. I agree that her actions were wrong and most backlash she got and is getting is deserved, however sometimes people take it too far. Just because she's been racist doesn't mean you also be racist, and some fans don't realise that.

      However, I dont think ching chong is a good comparison in this case bc it's actually not Mandarin and means nothing. Its a term that was created by non-asians to make fun of the sounds of the language, and not an attempt to actually use any legitimate words. Ive read thousands of people calling her a visual hole in aespa (which, lets be forreal, its one of the prettiest group out there) and that hed visuals did not match the groups one and for this reason a lot of knet started hating her. I als9 believe that being half-japanese, with a very western humor/vibe, being the only one that didnt showcaxe vocals during their early era and was the worst dancer played a significant role, but nothing will compare to how much netz care about an idol visual. Its the same reason why Sana, Mina and Momo are loved (especially Sana) while Chaeryeong (a korean, from Itzy) was hated.

    The issue was also the fact that she signed to SM entertainment. SM has a history of just not really treating any of their foreign idles really well we know this because like most of the Chinese idols that they have who have left have talked about the mismanagement, the mistreatment how crappy it was.
    In terms of her ethnicity, the crazy thing is even if she had been raised in Korea. People would still see her as Japanese and I think it’s crazy. They’ve been other half Korean half Japanese idols that I think of his name starts with a K I forgot what it was but he was in a 2nd/3rd group , and he grew up in both countries and yet he was always seen and promoted as being Japanese and it was funny because his Korean was fluent and it was really good and people would always commented him on it and he would always say yeah I speak with my mom he just sat there and told my mom’s Korean or when he would talk about how he would spend summers in Korea and visiting his grandparents here and his cousins and things.
    Even like other people who are Korean, but may have been born in Japan and raised there like Kiko known K-pop industry for dating GD At one point people genuinely forget she’s not ethically Japanese at all she’s half Korean half European if I’m correct or Australian. She’s some kind of white and Korean mix but she was born in Japan. She’s done things where she’s talked about when she’s visiting and it is to be there and experience, the culture and the food and stuff and how her Korean parent had talked about some of these foods being foods that they look like growing up and eating and stuff like that.
    And yes, Japan has been really crappy things in the past and so has China if you think about it when it comes to Korea in general and it’s one of the reasons why Korea has such really strain relations with both countries, which is understandable, but I still think it’s weird that they’re willing to take talent from those two countries to bring to their own debut as artist and things and some of them blow up to be huge Whenever there’s just the smallest of an issue that will be Weaponized against them and the companies do nothing which is what I think is the biggest issue.
    Gisselle is being used for her talent when it suits them, but nothing more nothing less NingNing is being used for her talent and the foothold that she gives their group in China nothing more nothing less. It’s crazy how companies especially ones like SM entertainment who consistently will go to these countries to scout people to join their company will sit there and see them more, they can use primarily for a inside of that which is what I think it is most of the time. And I’m always happy when I see Asian because I feel like whenever you have someone who does pointed out who is Asian because I definitely have people sit there and tell me I’m insane for pointing out certain things like that and it’s like I don’t think you understand as someone who is mixed as someone
    When had her initial scandal the company handled it very poorly in my opinion with not saying anything at first not having someone monitor that video before putting it out there then leaves me to believing that I genuinely think that someone in the company saw that and they did not care so they purposely put it out there and it wouldn’t be the first time that that has happened to a foreign idol Because people come from their own company. And then they went about which I think was only on Twitter I think also affected the way some people saw it. And I personally think it’s funny because I’m a fan of like NCT and there is at least two members of NCT who have done the exact same thing she did which is singing along to song by black artist that had the N-word in it, and they were mouth the word, never did. The video still exist on the Internet, but as entertainment never said anything about it. The fans sat there and pointed it out, and then they had hordes of other fans that are way too invested and critical, thinking skills or being able to understand people can make mistakes it’s just them owning up to it. That fans would want trying to defend those members and again the company never said anything about it. There was never an apology. There was never a statement there wasn’t even like a half, like that, they said, and you saw the camera wasn’t close enough or whatever.
    Also, I feel like as far as SM is concern she is the filler member. Not in terms of her talent because she is talented, but in terms of what they’re trying to who they’re trying to push. NingNing is extremely talented. She technically had somewhat of a singing career before she even joined the company yet the company doesn’t push her at all either not as much as they could unlike they do with the twoKorean members which I think makes sense.
    I also must say it’s nice to see when other people outside of people point this out because I’ve definitely seen people have arguments whether it’s with myself or others when we point this out. It’s like we understand more than you would think we might not be celebrities or idol, but you can clearly see the difference between, mixed race idols are Korean or idols who are fully foreign and how they get treated by the companies, especially if they get into like a scandal or something fairly early on in their career or just in general how different the company will go about it compared to the Korean members.

      As a boomer kpop fan and someone who has stanned mostly sm groups ( and ones with foreigners in it ) i think SM is by the the most xenophobic company compared to YG and JYP. As far as they are concerned when it comes to foreigner members they look at them as the eternal side dishes to the korean members who are the main dishes. It doesn't matter how talented or charming they are.
      The discrimination is even more blatant when the foreign member is objectively the best looking member ( winwin) or the best singers ( ningning ) or is a diamond all rounder type ( ten). It becomes nonsensical to the point that you have to believe it to be extreme prejudice and bias.

    The thing is that Koreans allegedly (not trying to get hate) hate south East Asian too (mostly Filipinos I think and I still don't know why) and Chinese people too but they have a "rule" that despite if they hate e/o (Korean people and Chinese people) they'll hate Japanese people more (this is not a generality btw but because of the historical nature of their complex relationships) that would explain why they are harsher on Giselle than on 2Ning and maybe that because she is HALF also contributed seen as a "treason" of some sort like why would a Korean woman marry a Japanese man when she can marry in her own country etc... also Momo, Sana and Mina do get hate. Not to Giselle extent I think but they go hate for doing a live speaking Japanese and Sana literally got bullied because she talked about the emperor of Japan or something like that on their Japanese Instagram and people started hating on her. I don't remember the details and if she went on a hiatus bc of that but yeah... they kind of got their fair share although I am not that knowledgeable. For Giselle's case, what I said is purely speculation bc what do I know 😭

    I would totally understand if the criticism came from her controversy from 3 years ago but unfortunately she was already being excluded/disliked even before that had occurred. Netizens have always been talking about how she is a visual hole (which I personally do not agree with at all) and also have been making xenophobic remarks on the side. The hate wave later on made it so much easier for people to discriminate against her or harass her in any form. Not to forget that she seemed to have lost confidence (+ with her also being the least trained member) she would make noticeable mistakes on stage. I do think that the situation has definitely gotten better since she has improved greatly and has been getting better styling choices which made her stand out a bit more but unfortunately the mistreatment hasn’t ended yet as she is still (occasionally) being excluded. SM's director/coo was allegedly exposed multiple times for sharing/reposting/liking every promotional post for various diffrent members, yet Idols like Giselle, Yuta, ect. where nowhere to be seen. Mise en scene has allegedly "forgotten" to post her individual photos multiple times and once they were called out they posted an already existing photo without her holding the product while the other 3 members had new pictures taken. I'm not even gonna get to the styling choices, haha. Lmk if you think I'm reaching )))

    There is NO doubt that Karina and Winter are the most popular members in S Korea and the world. Karina, especially, was considered the icon of entire KPop industry until the dating scandal brought her down. In S Korea, Karina was more popular than Jennie of BP or Wonyoung of IVE. Ningning, on the other hand, is always viewed as somewhat suspicious because of her Chinese background. Because KPop is banned in China, Ningning's marketability suffered greatly. Giselle is a strange case. She speaks Korean as if she is a native! Well, Giselle was born in S Korea! She seems less popular than other 3 mainly because of her visual. Giselle's Japanese ethnicity is not so much a handicap because Japanese girls are wildly popular among men world-wide.

    personally i think it’s a mix of a few things
    1. her heritage could cause certain brands to see her in a prejudiced way
    2. while twice is one of the most popular and well liked groups in south korea, aespa is still relatively new and hasn’t built up a reputation like twice has so that could contribute to why twice’s j-line are treated with more respect
    3. as much as it hurts me to say this, compared to other japanese kpop idols giselle’s visuals are often criticised and not seen as favourable by a lot of netizens as she doesn’t really fit the korean beauty standard
    4. she doesn’t have a lot of fans compared to the other members so it’s easier to exclude her without a massive deal being made. this could be for a lot of reasons like the fact she mouthed the nword which to this day kpop fans use as an excuse to drag her, her visuals (which i’ve mentioned in my 3rd point) and the fact that she has weaker skills in dance, stage presence and vocals when compared to the other members
    5. her company has a history of giving preferential treatment towards korean trainees and idols while foreigners get less opportunities at best and straight up abused at worst.
    when you’re the least favourable to the general public both nationally and internationally companies think they can get away with more and while she might not be my bias, giselle deserves so much better

    I also think it’s because Giselle doesn’t fit the typical beauty standard in Korea. She is considered ugly by many

      Her real name is Ning Yizhuo. So some people just call her ‘Ning2’. The same way some people just call Giselle ‘G’. It’s just a nickname you’ll be fine

    AESPA is treated by sm the way koreans treat all non-korean idols. The moment Ningning leaves SM, she will take over China.

    I really need people to realize that the n word is in so many mainstream songs I’m black can’t stand the word so I don’t use it but how can we keep this ohh you can’t say that going when it’s being introduced to the world as a mainstream word

    • @neptuniantreasure
      @neptuniantreasure Месяц назад +2

      just because many black ppl use it in their songs doesn’t justify the use of anybody else using it. like u said, u can’t stand it, so u don’t use it, but other black ppl do. unless u don’t know english or something like that, there’s no real excuse for saying it. using it just bc some rapper does is sheep mentality

      @@neptuniantreasure this still doesn’t make sense to me putting certain inflections on words depending on skin color sounds like racism the meaning of the word and how it’s being used in music doesn’t change depending on skin color

    Aespa will never get to the top until the company treats Giselle right. Giselle is the best female rapper in SM gg history and they are WASTING her potential... her pre debut self written rap is fireeeee. Her solo 2hot4u is fireeee. 🔥 They need to treat her like the main rapper she is and utilize her skills.
    I mean I love Ningning and Winter but they do not need the rap parts. They have enough singing parts for the song. I mean - I don't see Giselle getting the high notes though she is also a great vocalist... proved with her heavenly adlibs and her ballad solo in the concert.
    She's the prettiest idol I have ever seen without makeup like have you seen her skin? Flawless. ✨️ She's also got the best fittest body in Aespa yet the stylists f up her makeup and give her badly fitting outfits.
    SM just self sabotaging at this point.

    If that word is so offensive why, do I hear it more now than, ten to fifteen years ago. Most groups have a "Giselle", it's seems to be a must have, to be successful. I hope Giselle is laughing all the way to the bank. Quality always shines through, no matter, what!

    tbh i will never understand the media. like, look at ateez, 8 korean members achieving so much and yet no mediz coverage in sk.. kmedia are a mystery at this point.
