    Just a tip…
    Go ahead and get as many grazing animals as you can, otherwise, all that land will need to be mowed. If you let it go, it just gives a boost to weeds.
    And if you buy young animals, it is much cheaper than getting breeding age, and then they will be to start breeding age when you’re ready to deal with it.
    Rotational grazing really helps put pastures into great shape. I’m sure you’ve heard of it, but I thought to mention it in case you haven’t.
    I don’t know if you have St. Croix hair sheep in Australia, but they are really good with rough grazing areas. Mine love the fall leaves and keep most weeds under control, too. Here in the US they have developed strong parasite resistance. I just keep three wethers to mow the smallish pasture. I don’t want to deal with shearing, and the hair sheep shed their coats in the spring.
    Congratulations on your beautiful new farm!

    • @BitsOutTheBackFarm
      @BitsOutTheBackFarm  Год назад +1

      The place has been over grazed to a point so we will be resting the paddocks for a while Ronnie. At the moment the grass is under 1"/25mm high & dried off due to lack of rain. The paddocks will be slashed though to help build some organic matter once they grow some.
      We are looking at getting a few sheep at some point but will start with a few goats then smaller breed cattle.
      Cheers & have a top one.

      A shame about the rain. It freaks me out how drastically the weather has altered. Drought in one area, and flooding downpours a few miles away…
      If you get a tractor, maybe creating rows of gentle berms and swales will help you get through drought times. There are good articles on seeding of plants that help improve pasture, too. Clovers, and some legumes…can’t recall which ones…but they sell mixes just for that purpose that are safe for grazing animals. Keep being awesome!
