G'Day folks, Just a quick tip on your bat box's, take the front off the box and either rough up the inside back of the box pr staple some fly wire, or similar, inside the box so that the bats have something to grip onto as they rest.... Looks like you have been pretty busy with the rest of the area...keep up the great work.
I Think we should start collecting the eggs & give them the float test to see if they're OK. I suppose we could always crack them on the deck just in case they're stinkers. 🤣🤢 Cheers & have a top one.
You will have fun with goats.Had both milkers and cashmere stud . Can be interesting to keep contained lol We had plain then barb then netting then electric, all on one paddock fence and the buggers still got out. Hope you have more success than we had. Loved the meat and milk tho. Good luck, feel like i am back tomy younger days
We're looking into the netting now Kerry as we will need it for the small sections we want to run them in around the house paddock. We'll just be staying with meat goats for the time being. I did my years milking cows as a kid & I think that was more than enough. 😉
I discovered where the micro bats live at my place, they were roosting in the shade umbrella when I accidentally woke them up in the middle of the day! Tiny tiny things!
I think I asked before but do you have a local extension office that services farmers/small land holders Jennifer? I know not all areas have them there. They might have similar services if you do. We only have smaller NGO groups like QGoat & BMRG here.
When I was doing my zoology degree at UNE, we set up a couple of audio recorders on campus in amongst the trees and then analysed the recordings. It was amazing the number of different species of bat we were able to identify from their calls, especially when you consider we didn't see or hear a single one. Those recorders were amazing.
Thanks for the tip Steve. 👍 I have a Tascam that might do the trick. B was saying that she thought she heard different calls but not sure if that was gender related or not. Hope you have a top week mate.
@@BitsOutTheBackFarm If the Tascam will record them, it'd be worth trying to identify them using the sound. The trick is finding sounds to compare them to.
Yep, education before the fact will also save the vet bills as well methinks. I really would like to get some film of the bats just so we can work out which ones they are. Happy to wait until they're in the boxes as B suggested. Cheers mate & have a fantastic week.
Thanks for the video, good to see that you are making the place the way you want it. I cant wait for the Spring here in the U.S. to see what grows on our property. Dont have a lot of property but its big enough for us to garden and live simpler.
Every year I can see tiny bats catching insects in mid air right in front of my security camera just before full dark. And every day at the same time. True acrobats. It is amazing to see how they can make a 90 degree turn in mid air. @@BitsOutTheBackFarm
Hi guys, thanks for the videos. I look forward to them every weekend. We’ve got a block at Chatsworth just outside Gympie, and we have a bit of Rats Tail, which I’ve been trying to control by cutting off seed heads and spraying with a bit of roundup. I’ve also been spelling paddocks to see if the other grasses will out compete the rats tail. I’m interested in your comments regarding the producer around Bundy and his advice on controlling rats tail grass. Would you mind sharing, or doing a video about it please. Keep the great vids coming, we luv them. Jason and Monica
Hi Jason and Monica. We won't be doing a video for a while on our methods as we're just not set up for it as of yet. He uses spot spray method at the moment but is now thinking about using the wick wiper unit that the local council have to loan out. We learned about it & other services that offer at the workshop. Gympie may have some similar services so might be worth checking out. With the wipe method you slash the paddock first & the GRT will generally grow back faster & taller than other grasses. When it's tall enough you run the wick-wipe over the top & only the taller GRT will get treated. Hope that helps some folks.
@@BitsOutTheBackFarm thanks for that, I’ll touch base with the Gympie council. Another question, when you were at the field day was there any info from the Mary River catchment guys on grants or funding that can be accessed to manage erosion. Like you guys, We’ve got some erosion on our place, and was wondering if there’s assistance available. Rectification isn’t going to be cheap, but we will have to address it.
@@hsvme6508 Sorry I missed your reply. They did have some info on available help but we didn't take much notice sorry. I think it had more to do with natural waterways where ours erosion issue is man made. Would like to know how you get on.
There sure is a bit of work in getting the place tidied up but you have done a fair bit already. We have some insectivorous bats here also. I have plans to either get or make some bay houses.
Hi Rob, thanks for the goat disease info, i suspect a lot can be avoided by having lots of different plants bushes, mixed herbs, rosemary and thyme , ribwort, comfrey, borage, sage, apple trees and fruit blackberry ? , dandelion, thistle, etc, and garden veg like humans eat, to browse on, not just grass, grass, grass. not saying its foolproof, but worth a try.
From what we've seen & been told "treating disease" with diet looks to work just as well for animals as it does for humans.. Who'd of thunk it. 🤔😉 Hope all's well with you mate.
Certainly are. 👍 Using the netting around the house to keep the grass down to start with as we'll only have 6 or so. If we feel like they're right for us we'll get more to help clear some of the brush under the trees down the front & in the back paddock we want to regen. 👍 Cheers IR
Hey Katrina. All is well with the three of us thanks. Had some time off due to family matters that needed our attention down south. We're getting back into videoing again now & hope to have an update this weekend. 😁 Cheers & have a fantastic one.
The place is starting to look tidier, great work! Would you be getting meat goats or dairy goats? If meat, have you considered Percy Island goats? A unique, heritage, Aussie goat. I've always wanted goats, since working with them in Ag class at high school. And, after learning about Percy Island goats, have always wanted them! 😊 All the best - Janis.
Hey Janis. I have never heard of them to tell you the truth but have them on the list to look up. 👍 We're mainly looking for meat goats & are wanting a breed that does well in our region. Boer look to be the go to but we know a few folks with X breeds as well. Cheers & have a great week.
