- Former Army tech Larry Johnson has spent his career improving computer and telephone systems so when he saw inefficiencies in how we grow our food, he decided to create a new system for farming your yard. His EZGro garden uses aquaponics, stacked towers, and custom pots to create a high-density vertical garden (HDVG) on as little land as a deck, rooftop, or parking space.
Johnson says the system will grow 700 plants, using 15 towers, in a space of just 2 by 18 feet. Today, he sells kits ranging from single tower patio gardens to 10-tower deck gardens to commercial-sized set-ups like those being used by a Miami football stadium for concession meals, by a Whole Foods Market in New Jersey, and by rooftop farmers in Lagos, Nigeria.
It all began in 1995 when Johnson began tinkering with his quad pot design, crafting a custom container strong enough to hold tomato plants with over 100 pounds of fruit. He then developed an irrigation system that feeds nutrient-rich water from the top of the towers, drips through the pots, and filters out through tubing below to be reused. This closed-loop system uses less than 10% of the water of a traditional garden.
To create a system robust enough for even off-grid farmers, Johnson has spent the last 2 decades developing his trihelix solar windmill. Solar panels are mounted on top of three turbines, known as the "Tri-Helix", which are twisted like DNA strands to catch even inconsistent wind (turbines start turning in winds of just 2mph).

If you're interested in these types of vertical-axis windmills, be sure to search a bit for: "Savonius wind turbine". This will show you examples of similar turbine designs, which can you even make as a small science project using e.g. a Pringles tube or a (a bit more "serious") using a small section of rainwater pipe. :)
Note: make sure you stay safe though! When there are high wind speeds. Under high load (and when no braking/safety mechanism is present) parts can go flying when a wind turbine hasn't been designed/constructed properly.

Savonius (vertical axle) windmills are notoriously ineffective compared to the propeller style ones. They were invented a hundred years ago and there is a reason why they are not widely used. It would have been interesting to get proper test results for this design, but any claim that this design is more efficient than what is producing 99.9999% of today's wind energy production should be taken with a very large spoon of salt.
@@tzenophile Depends what you call effective. The propeller ones are installed in a certain position because they know, they studied and have enough data to know where can be efficient. This instead is made to be multi-purpose. By try and error like this fella did, he knows why he choose this instead of the modern one.

If you want to claim that I'm wrong, please present a single piece of evidence that vertical axis windmills are competitively efficient. They are not. They look cool, which is why people want to believe in them, but they are only used in applications where output is not important, e.g. low-power sensors. If EZGro wants to claim that this is as good as horizontal axis windmills, they have to give us the data. This is pure physics; simple calculations and measurements. Why do you think they don't? It would have been seen as a major breakthrough if they could. But no.

Sure, as an entity America has accomplished a lot but at what cost? The near-annihilation of the entire population of people who originally lived here? @@tzaylor It's easy to figure, A tower can drink up to 1 gal a day. I have 50 towers so that is 50 gal a day in 30 days, that would be 1500 gal a month. It takes 8oz of minerals to make 100 gal of food so we are looking at about 7.5 lbs of minerals. We use a 5 gal pail set (50lbs) every 6 months which cost about $250 so that’s about $42 a month. That is far less the the cost of the food that is produced. We will get about 10 lbs of food per week per tower when in production. We have a small farm stand at the curb and will sell about 400 lbs of tomatoes a week at $2 a pound. We grow other crops as well but tomatoes are in high demand here so we have 40 towers of tomatoes.

Liquid food may become a problem because of how its manufactured, do love the water use though.

Larry's PCB alternator has fascinated me since I first saw this video. Today I discovered that a company named "Infinitum Electric" has patented this concept, and is actively developing modular, high-efficiency motors using the idea. They appear to have A LOT of VC funding. Interestingly, the company is about 45 mi. from Larry's place in Bastrop. I don't see Larry listed on their company roster, but it's hard to imagine there isn't some connection.

In the description you call it aquaponics, but it's a hydroponics set up.
Aquaponics = living fish in the system and their waste water is used to water the plants.
Hydroponics = adding the minerals and trace elements to the water, not using living organisms for it.

Hydroponic and aquaponic systems do not use soil.
Yeah it’s not even hydroponics it’s just a super efficient watering system.
He had a mix of soil and soilless, so fundamentally as per Sahaj's comment, its an automated watering system that gets feed dosed, and some of the plants are hydroponic.
The RO he talks about doesn't even produce the nutrients, its a water filter, I would assume its cleaning either ground / well water or lake / river. Maybe he's concerned about the town water chlorine, seeing as there is almost zero vermiculture, lacto basilicas or mycorrhizal / saprophytic funghi to break it down.
This is fascinating. As I was watching this I kept trying to invision what it would be like to live in a world/community where many, many people were doing this.....a town, or city neighborhood. All the possible varieties of plants and foods there could be. Just walking through the neighborhood could be a joy.....Thanks for posting your videos. They help me dream.

I grew up in a town where the developer put three fruit trees in every yard. It could be an apple, pear, peach, sour cherry, or sickle pear. After sixty years there aren't many left because people no longer know how to take care of fruit trees. That art has gone away with the future.
@@beebob1279 They absolutely don't want us to be that comfortable but that should not stop us--in fact that's exactly why people should take food security into their own hands at a very local, community level on the down-low. It's much harder to put a stop to a grassroots movement (pardon the pun) that have taken root. Food deserts are a manmade problem that is an afront on every person's right to healthy food. To me, I would say that's reason enough to never stop undermining those powers that be.

He didn't invent those. And as others have pointed out, most drain and fill horticulture setups recycle the liquid.
And he is trying to make a buck, hence the patent on his pots.
Aquaponics is actually better, since you get fish, and they make the plant food.

We are working toward this on our farm, but we are in a much colder climate. We are also restoring the endangered oak savanna habitat on our land and that takes time as well - but if everyone does something, the world will be a better place 😊

Amazing! I did a hydroponics project with a friend of mine in seventh grade for a science fair, that was back in the early 60s. People did look for healthy alternatives to growing food and living communities in the mid-sixties, and that was very much a part of the hippie movement, in the late 60s, early 70s.
I can’t help but wonder if this would have taken off more for home gardeners back then if work hours hadn’t become so long in this country. Most employers think they own the people that work for them now, and people have nothing left after finishing their crazy hours, so they watch a little Netflix to turn off their brain and fall asleep. (If anything, the pandemic has made it worse because it’s easier for supervisors to dump more work without looking you in the eye.)

12:30 , no wind turbines are made on the basis of alternator, they are basically some form of BLDC or PMSM which internally operates just like a 3 phase AC induction motor. PMSM motors are about as efficient as you can get.

Everyone who understands what he built knows that alternator is the wrong terminology, but for the inexperienced or lay person this video was directed to, alternator as an understandable word from your car as being able to generate electricity from the rotational momentum and so was the correct word to use.
Who when starting diy-ing wind turbines didn't make theirs a hacked together HAWT with a car alternator. Worked fine until we all understood why it wasn't great.

yea, really. hundreds of watts from each of those, maybe in the peak of a hurricane. they're not high production turbines. the classic style is used much more often because it works. even if the turbine has to turn to face into the wind, that's not hurting production so much as it is auto tuning the production and getting the most out of it. these vertical ones on the other hand, they're good because wind can come in from any direction, but when they're lined up like he has them... well, you've ruined the only benefit that style of turbine has.

Birds and Bats will not fly into them and DIE, unlike traditional big blade windmills.
If nothing else, this was a good infomercial! This video blew up his website and currently can't access it. He needs a bigger off-grid internet box! This system would be perfect for the lettuce technique called "Cut-and-Come-Again".

We tried this early this year, we just hung a bag from a gate and put a tomato plant in it, worked really well, so we will do it again next year, just one as that yields enough for the two of us.

Roma tomatoes are $12 a case 35lbs, heirloom and special varieties can fetch $45 a case. It's not about the pots its about the plants. I love this makes me hungry watching this. 👍

Amazing content! What an incredible system. Great for producing commercial quantities, or long term production on a homestead. Long term, cause the high cost of the system makes the food too expensive in small quantities unless amortised over a long time. Which is why Larry emphasises how durable it it is. But as the cost of natural resources increases, the system becomes more feasible. And people can grow what they need locally on very small/urban plots. I presume (hope) those plastics are made from recycled materials. The turbines look very interesting!
I so love and respect the ideals you hold in durability and eficiency combined! This combined with vertical growing. I would like to combine this with aquaponics.

I noticed that too. I really think it demonstrates why an ideal system for generating energy is both local and diverse. We need multiple sources of sustainable energy (wind, solar, wave, etc.) + efficient batteries to store energy so it can be used later. I believe it can be done but the whole industry needs massive support and investment. I love that Kirsten is helping to get this Larry Johnson's message broadcast. @EZGroGarden @EZGro
if there is no wind to find, there's just no wind. But when there is wind, it's good to know the turbines will be ready quickly, specifically because it might not last long.
that style turbine is good because it works with wind from any direction, but he put them in a line so they can only accept wind from the front or back. kinda defeats the purpose. better to have them spread out and up higher, not grouped together in a row at ground level.

@@betsyolsson-mackowski7682 Agreed, though I think that small modular nuclear reactors need to be added to the mix of renewables as a scalable power source to offset fossil fuels. Renewables get a lot of hype, but next-generation nuclear is held back by a lot of regulatory hurdles and there isn't as much public awareness of such in comparison. The only way we can bring down our net carbon emissions to reasonable levels IMO is by making use of all options available, and nuclear is one of those options.
This man is SO smart-so blessed. I hope he makes his million(s) back-he deserves it.
