In this video I show you how to make the delicious and unique peach kuchen. It’s not a rich, heavy dessert and this makes it great for our favorite diabetics. It’s great for a family or church gathering, as well as a simple breakfast. I find that it is best served warm from the microwave (about 30 seconds). I really think you will enjoy this. If you are worried about that custard cream topping, don’t! You’ll hardly realize it’s even there. Enjoy!
    Peach Kuchen
    Crust-
    1 ½ cups flour
¾ cup sugar or for my favorite diabetics ¼ cup + 2TBSP Splenda Sugar Blend
    2 tsp baking powder
    ½ tsp salt
1/8 tsp nutmeg (take your ¼ tsp measure and do half or less)
½ stick of cold butter cut into small pieces
    ½ cup milk
    1 egg
    29oz can sliced peaches (822g)
    Custard Cream Topping
1 cup milk (you can add ¼ cup more milk if you need a little more to cover the peaches)
    2 tsp flour
½ cup sugar or for my favorite diabetics ¼ cup Splenda Sugar Blend
    1 egg
    1 tsp vanilla
    1 pinch of salt

I'm from South Dakota and kuchen is our state dessert. First, kuchen means "cake" and the lil German ladies (who still spoke German in their home) who taught me how to make it pronounced it ku-gen, or coogan. My understanding was that kuchen is any kind of cake made with a sweet yeast dough.
Which brings me to my next point, kuchen is made, traditionally, with a sweet yeast dough crust. I'm not saying there's no other way to make it....but as it is made and sold in South Dakota, that's the crust it has.
My mother and grandmother would basically have a kuchen day where they would bake dozens of them in foil pie pans. Sometimes it depended on what fruit had come out of the orchard and sometimes it was because of a sale. We might get a couple of cases of peaches or get strawberries out of the garden or pick wild plums and then make several varieties in one day. We also make a cottage cheese kuchen that sometimes would have raisins in it, sometimes just the cheese, and if you are feeling fancy, you can top with fruit, like sugared strawberries.
After they were all baked they'd wrap them up and throw them in the freezer. You could grab one out and have it thawed quickly for snack with morning coffee, if company stopped by, or to take out to the guys working in the field. One of our hired hands always said we could probably stop paying him and he'd still show up for the kuchen in his lunch pail. Haha.

I learned some great information from your comments, thank you. I went online to several places to learn the pronunciation of Kuchen and settled for one that said, "Ku-hen." I'm sure it is pronounced differently in different areas. How interesting to learn that it is the state dessert of South Dakota. As for the dessert traditionally being a yeast bread, I did not know that either. This particular recipe was submitted to me as a fan favorite so I have limited information about it. If you have a family recipe you would like to share, I would be interested in testing it and doing a show on it. You can email me at helpathomejim@gmail.com , again, thanks for all the great information.

Thank you for making this video, I have some baking experience but I've never made Kuchen before and I needed some info on how to do it first so I won't embarrass myself! I'm absolutely head-over-heels in love with a really wonderful girl, and she asked me if I could make her a peach kuchen, since she loves them, which is understandably why I want to make sure I make some *really* nice Kuchen.

I had never heard of this before either, Wendy. But it's the tasty dessert with the interesting name. And like I said in the description yes it has a custard on top but I think for most of the people that are afraid of custards you probably couldn't tell anyway. Thanks for watching Wendy and serve this one to the boys I think they'll like it. Slightly warm I think is the best way to go.

You can do it. This one is delicious and one of my new favorites from the last few months. This is one that you can have warm or cold. I like it with coffee and then put it in the microwave for maybe 30 seconds and it's nice and tender. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Good Morning Jim! Man, that looks absolutely delicious. I'm in total agreement with Rick, I just wish I had an oven a the building cause I'd be baking up a storm and stuffing the Peach Kuchen down. As Rick stated, I can smell it baking now with a hot cup of coffee to go with it, LOL! Thanks to the anonymous subscriber for sharing the delicious recipe. I'm going to hold off until Summer and try this recipe with fresh peaches, and of course being one of your diabetic subscribers with Splenda, YUMMY! Thanks again Jim now I'm going to be dreaming of this recipe for the entire day, LOL!

Does anyone know if this recipe is relatively authentic? I had an (ex) sister-in-law that made this but I was quite young and I don't recall how she made it. What I do remember is that it was absolutely delicious. She was of German descent and called it peach kuchen (sounding the "ch", not the way this guy says it) and made it in a rectangular Pyrex pan. I remember watching through the oven glass waiting patiently for it to finish baking. I'm a nut for anything custard and this dessert was so good and comforting, like a warm hug and sweet kiss.

    • @HelpatHomeJim
      @HelpatHomeJim  3 года назад +2

This recipe was given to me by a mature friend, so I assume it's authentic. It is a lovely and comforting dessert. Online pronunciation research with several different Germans pronouncing Kuchen, left the "ch" silent. I'm a retired teacher and I do my best to check out the facts. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas.

@@HelpatHomeJim Thanks for your prompt reply and for the info. I watched several other kuchen recipes and many of them pronounced it "cooga". Maybe which part of Germany one's from determines how it's pronounced. My ex sister in law was at least a 3rd generation American, she and her parents were born here, maybe even her grandparents, I don't know, so it's quite possible they simply pronounced it incorrectly because the correct way to say the word was lost over time and it became Americanized.
Anyway, I enjoyed your tutorial and the recipe looked easy to make and turned out beautifully. Thanks for sharing it and Merry Christmas to you as well and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.

@@HelpatHomeJim Very good recipe Jim. Did find you video very fun to watch when looking for a recipe to show my kids how to make this lovely desert I grew up enjoying. My God mother and close friend to my parents would bake them regularly and I think she taught my mom the way how to. She was direct descendant of German families that migrates down there in the 1800's. I did enjoy her different varieties of seasonal sour fruits bakes such as Berries, Plumps, Apples, Apricots, Rhubarb, Peaches and sour Cherries that were all organically grown, ripe on the tree or bushes that tasted so awesome. I remember myself being a kid watching her making these pastries so easily during cold days, with her oven on and baking 2 or 3 Kuchens at the time to feed a large family and friends that had stopped by. Your bread consistency, the pronunciation of the word Kuchen and the pastry looks at the end of the oven process is just the way I remember she would get them done. Some times she would just skip the custard topping and just sprinkle the sour fruits the like of berries, plums or cherries on top of the soft bread generously, with plain old sugar; alternative that I loved since it would create an extremely delicate and deliciously caramelized and crunchy sour top. Cordially
