Spot on. Dunks ARE dumb, and I've been collecting since the early 90's. The observation that they're better served as a template for color ways and collaborations is great, and I couldn't agree more. In the sneaker world, people aren't paying for quality, they're paying for exclusivity, as sneaker culture has always been about one-upsmanship more than anything else. Make anything limited, and people will put value on it for you.

I think people are missing the psychology of this. I think the reason they resell for such high amounts for what really is minimal variation is to have a popular shoe with just enough different to "be different" and to have people know the resell value is "high" , ie the point is to "flex" on people so needlessly spending a lot for a little benefit is part of the point.

I think the main appeal for me was that the colorways were really cool and a lot of them were themed off of cool concepts (ferris bueller dunks, marge simpson dunks, etc). Little bit of background info the Nike dunk “panda” was released in 2021. The last time the panda dunk released was 2011 however it’s incredibly important to mention the 2011 pair has significantly better leather and materials. To simply sum it up the 2021 has poor qualities because Nike intended to mass produce and mass restock these pairs, Nike sees panda dunks the same way as white Air Force 1s, therefore Nike rather sacrifice quality of a color way in order to allow more consumers to own pairs. Logically it makes sense as the colors of this shoe are simple and easy to wear so anyone who isn’t a sneaker head will be incline to purchase this shoe for a certain price tag assuming it’ll be the first and only large sneaker purchase

As a former sneakerhead, I can totally see why you'd rip on these. As I've gotten into my late twenties I've drifted away from the bold kinds of sneakers and choose to grab things that are more minimal and wearable every day, kinda like these! Unfortunately when Nike decided to start bringing back the dunks they were seeded out to influencers and retro ones were already being worn by Travis Scott. So the hype went through the roof just as they hoped it would. Oddly enough Gen Z's style (what I assume to be the target market for hype culture currently) is typically far from minimal, so it really makes you think about the concerted effort there must've been to blow these up. I can find a lot of appreciation for dunks and think their subtle differences in shape from the J1 really lend theirselves to being a sweet streetwear staple, but without a general ease of buying them at retail, I probably will never have a pair.

These things should retail for like $50 - $75, given the cheap materials, cookie cutter design aesthetics, and assembly line construction. I’m sure it costs Nike a small fraction of that to actually make these things, so the retail price is already needlessly inflated to begin with. Nike knows that a lot of people will still happily shell out more than they’re worth, though, so they charge more because they can. These shoes would be like if McDonald’s charged $1 for every single chicken McNugget, and then even greedier goons bought every location out of their entire stock of McNuggets to re-sell them for $3 a McNugget. This is the perfect example of hype and emotional consumerism run amok.

SB Dunks are only 20 years old. The reason why they where so popular was because they where made for skaters who skated. The hype is based on cool color patterns and collabs. Skateboarding is more popular than ever atm worldwide. Not really a shoe for someone who was in their prime 30 to 20 years ago. These are for 20 year olds. Not a 40 plus man.

@@sammallory dunks were introduced in 1985. They were originally a basketball shoe (hence the name) but experienced a wave of popularity with skaters because of how similar they are to Jordans, which had previously been adopted for skating.
The Dunk SB like was created in response to that

That's a real shame, when I was in middle school in 2002-2003 I had a pair of dunk lows in the dark red and white color. I loved those shoes and they held up forever and were really nice. But seems like Nike is cutting corners and still charging more lol.

A few tidbits. First, the dunk was the template for the Jordan 1, it pre-empted it by a year or so.
Second, the GRs of everything classic are cheapened these days. Old dunks were basketball shoes (duh) and couldn't get away with that.
Similarly, SB dunks are real skateboarding shoes so they have the tech to support that load.
The dunk lows have never looked that good to me. The highs are most people's go to but I prefer mids over everything.

I wouldn't say I am a diehard dunk guy, I only have one pair (2004 tweed high tops) but they are super comfortable and lightweight, its like wearing slippers. I was looking to get another pair recently and thought they'd been discontinued but now I know from this video its just scalpers being dickwads
EDIT: Apparently dunks and SB dunks are different? mine are SB's.

i mean it would be easy to make a video about how red wing is dumb because it's archaic and it's 2022 already, but you know... that perspective would be the only dumb thing in that video.

I hope that more people subscribe to your channel so that it brings more awareness.

Been a Dunk obsessed fan since the 90's. Like with anything, if something played a part in your life over a long period of time it has nostalgic value that trumps everything else. Also, if you look at older pairs the quality is actually there, the recent stuff Nike's pumping out at a breakneck pace to keep up with short windows of opportunity as far as hype/trend driven sales, it's nothing like the stuff from 10-20 years ago. Final point, the 15yr olds hoarding Dunks today and driving the secondary market prices through the roof are doing it for the same reasons they do everything else, because Instagram told them to. That's not me being old and bitter, it's just the reality of how things work when people are raised on likes and follows. If you showed most of them 5 obscure pairs of Dunks from a decade ago they'd have to Google the SKU number to know anything about the shoe. It's not about passion and quality for the new generation, it's about likes and a quick resale dollar or two.

I have a pair of dunk SBs that have been my only shoe i have worn since i got them in summer 2017. I am the polar opposite of a sneakerhead, they're comfy and they've held up extremely well. Got them for 80 bucks, 5 years is pretty good for the only shoe i've worn.

Dunks have always been my favourite Nike shoe. Coming from a outdoor basketball perspective (which is what they were originally intended for), I prefer Dunks over Air Forces simply because they are much closer to the ground and comfortable , similiarly to the Air Jordan 1's.
I completely agree with the statement made about Dunks being a 'template for collaboration', and I think resale culture is hurting the true intent of these shoes.

You're not missing anything man. Personally a pair of plain black & white dunks like you have in the video are my favorite sneakers & I have owned 30+ pairs of dunks over the last 15 years. I like the way they look and they are comfortable enough for me. But that was when a normal pair was $60-90, Nike ID dunks were $100ish and some quickstrike release was $150. No sneaker is worth hundreds of dollars and people that pay that kind of money are idiots IMO. Its not like buying a $5000 Omega Seamaster where the quality, materials & craftsmanship is at a much higher level than a $100 fossil watch. Now I wear the traditional skate shoe brands that have dunk like offerings and pay $50-80 / pair. Fuck resellers.
