How Skill Beat Size: Small MMA Fighter Defeats Big Kungfu Fighter - Nam Phan vs Khai Tran
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 май 2024
- In this very interesting case study of style vs style, fighter vs fighter, let's look at what happens when a very big and fit Kungfu guy in his 50s (Khai Tran) representing Vietnamese Hung Gar (Hong Gia) takes on a smaller MMA pro fighter in his 30s (Nam Phan). The fight goes two rounds, and in our opinion, should have been stopped much earlier. With that being said, the Kung Fu guy does pretty well and should have just protected his face more. For those of you who watch this, please leave your comments and let us know what you think! Also, if Khai or Nam see this, we would love to hear your thoughts and find out more about the background behind this! Also, we found out what happened to Khai after this, so if anyone can get us in touch with Khai, we would really want to follow his recovery! • To My Hong Gia Viet Na...

Why chins down? Sorry I'm new to the game
@@rules8076 No problem! If you leave your chin out, it's an easy target. Imagine getting hit on your chin, the torque forces applied to your head are immense at that point, easy knock-out. With your chin tucked, even if you get punched in your chin, won't be as brutal.
@@zoommair thanks man, if I ever need to defend myself I will keep that in mind 👍😊
It is amazing how much difference tucking the chin and having a good mouth guard makes. Shoulder roll of a good boxer is amazing to watch. Kung Fu guy is at least 30 lb heavier, no?

This is so far the best Kung Fu guy to fight an MMA guy video. Although, the kung fu guy used zero Kung Fu, just threw normal-ish punches. Good kicks and elbows as stated. If that Kung Fu guy had 6 months - 1 Year of MMA training, he could be a very good fighter. I love how he is not afraid to get hit.
Yeah I have an iron chin so hit me as hard as you can. Oh wait I have no cardio. I'm out of shape. OOOPS🤭😳🤪!!!
kkkkkkkkkkk quando falaram que os gringos babava ovo para MMA eu pensei que era zoeira, agora eu vejo que é serio kkkkkkkkkkkkk
@Bud Borne Is almost as they know that kung-fu facy moves ain't worth shit in fight.
@Bud Borne The guy who fought Xu Xiaodong looked like he was doing Wing Chun. His style was simply very sloppy. This "Kung Fu Master" just looked like an aggressive brawler using his size to his advantage and coming at Nam Phan with his hands down. He didn't throw many kicks and that is what people typically associate with Kung Fu. The reason that most of the "masters" in these MMA vs. Kung Fu videos don't look like Cung Le when they fight is because they don't do full-contact sparring. If you did you would know to keep your hands up when you fight. When you train in a kwoon doing forms and practice punching and kicking the air instead of sparring you will look very ineffective when you get in to a real fight.
Bud Borne I agree. I will add that I feel that many Kung Fu styles teach impractical technique. If you look at Cung Le his fighting style is basically Kickboxing with flashy Kung Fu kicks. He started Martial Arts learning Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do then trained in San Shou. San Shou is kickboxing with throws which has its own techniques derived from different Kung Fu styles such as sweeps and combos that San Shou fighters developed. This is effective Kung Fu for combat sport. Most Wing Chun practitioners will do a lot of arm flailing not only because of lack of sparring but because they are not learning something practical.
Nam is a ufc og from back in the day. He was in the ultimate fighter. Small guy that can box and has good bjj. Kung fu guy was actually decent
Kungfu guy wasnt ‘decent’. I saw no kungfu technique on display, but he knew how to use his size and aggression, so he s probably no stranger to street fights. Nam is a legit warrior. If they could grapple, fight would hv been over in 1 round
kung fu guy is NOT decent, like most kung fu guys... all show but no dice.
He is two weight class, more... how can he be decent? he is just a bully.
Compared to “performances” by Kung fu “experts” in the past this guy actually put up a decent fight.
Nam Phan was skilled and game at his best, but then his last few fights got seriously rough. He is nowhere near as good as he could be, and he still schooled the big kung fu man.
@@stevenlarsson6887 Because he is bigger than his opponent. There was no real fighting skill display, even less kung fu skills.
I just love the purple belts Cobra Kai style gi.

"but the mma guy bullied the traditional guy with their weight"
I thought weight classes didn't matter, and real traditional martial arts can allow little guys to beat up big guys.
Rules of physics still apply regardless of skills. A larger guy will hit harder and take less damage than a smaller guy at the same skill level. But in this case the larger guy is clearly not at the same skill level as his opponent and is quickly knocked out.
@@IR-xy3ij woooosh
This shows martial arts is very inefficient. It doesn't add much strength or cardio. Worst part is that it doesn't add practical fighting skills either.
I’m pretty sure every martial art says that lol.
What they don’t say is that it won’t work against a big guy who is trained.
@@matthewpham9525 Then it just depends on who is better really , there's no "won't work" there's just "you're not good enough to make it work"
Kung fu guys know how to shift punches, do leg kicks and teeps. But seriously he needed to learn how to protect himself by putting his hands up. Not all of us can be Lyoto Machida.
Lyoto is karate
Same thing, they're all asian martial arts anyway /s
Machida is a Karateka that has included other common MMA styles in his repertoire. Kung Fu is shit period.
Kung fu is not shit... many great fighters likes kung fu, even JJ and AS. But you just can't practice only kung fu expecting to be the new champion.
@biggunzcdb also KOed Randy Couture
I'm pretty sure that guy doesn't represent Kung Fu itself. Either way, it was painful to see him not keep his hands up. He just never learned even after constantly taking face shots.
5:06 - "Someone else filmed it."
Well, from the looks of it the whole block filmed it!
I'm convinced perfecting a few punches, low kicks and grappling along with realistic sparring is the best way to learn to defend yourself.
Sure is
I’ve watched some of Nam’s other videos and I think he’s a much better grappler than he is a striker. If they allowed MMA rules with grappling, then he could have finished the fight much faster. Nam seems like a cool guy and I totally support his gym. A great asset to the Vietnamese community. I’m from San Gabriel Valley area, Little Saigon is like our distant relative lol.
I go to SGV often!
Fight Commentary Breakdowns oh wow I thought you’re from China lol!
This fight took place at "Nam Phan MMA Academy" in Garden Grove, California.
If the referee stopped the fight early then the Kung fu guy would complain he stopped too early. The Kung fu guy clearly wanted to continue.
For a guy in his 50's to last as long as he did against a professional MMA fighter is pretty impressive. He had some good kicks and clinch work but he really needs to work on his defence. If he cross-trained in boxing he'd be a beast.
He did VERY well for a Kung Fu fighter indeed.
I think not!
Thank you guys
Your commentary made me realized the difference between real martial art moves and martial art movies

Kung Fu fighter lost because he had no gloves and couldn't protect his hands, not a fair fight!
Please dont hate me, I'm joking.

No no! you don't understand bro, the kung fu guy was blocking the punches with his face.
What cretins like you don't understand is that true and properly practised kung fu allows the practitioner to use their opponents weight and size against them. The Nam dude (the 'mma' fighter) has a big background in traditional Vietnamese kung fu and had mastered this technique and this is the true selling point of the video. All of you plebs have been fooled, this video actually shows kung fus dominance. The kung fu guy was actually disadvantaged by his larger size and the guy masquerading as an 'mma' fanboi is actually a kung fu master and bodied him with his supreme kung fu.
You would understand this if you studied Wing Chun where this is common practise and paid attention to the chunners blasting mma shitters out on the daily.

The Ref should’ve stopped the fight on the first knock down. Kung Fu guy was obviously out on his feet after that.
Roddy Yang It was not a street fight. It was in a ring with a third person there to stop and control the action. That’s a ref. Get a dictionary so you can inform yourself.
Mario Yamasaki strikes again...
Letting them be warriors out there
Hahahhahah
On behalf of the Kung Fooled community, the Kung Fooled master lost because the ring was too small, and there were too many people, and the ref wore the wrong colored costume, and spectators were using the wrong devices to record. Seriously, it's not because of Kung Fooled guy's lack of skills and/or piss poor techniques.
If you punch kungfu master's face, he'll sleep well and dream to fly like superman 😂😂😂
Another defeat for the "stumbling forward with your hands down chin jutting out "style.

Since most MMA fighters train in Muay Thai and Boxing, I would think that a better title for this would be, "Kung-Fu vs Muay Thai" or "Kung-Fu vs Muay Thai/Boxing". I do not consider MMA to be a real "discipline".
This mma guy is nam phan. He is a jujitsu black belt but doesn't use it on fights. Now i remember how pissed and mad bj penn was on him on the ultimate fighter show! Bj kept yelling him to take his opponent down and he just stood their banging all night! Haha

You missed a lot of stuff, Do your research this fighter gave an actual interview about this fight. The kung fu guy had never sparred in his life this was actually supposedly to be a sparring match but the kung fu guy took the invite as a personal insult. He didn’t understand the idea of sparing and he felt like he was an absolutely superior fighter even though he had not sparred even once. Look up,Peterson’s grappling for the interview.

I love watching those style vs style matchups on youtube (I mean, who doesn't ?), it's really one of my favourite thing ever, but I've yet to find a reliable way to find reliable info about each of these match. It's so interesting, yet I haven't found someone dedicating enough time to it. Everytime you see one of these wacky "style vs style" matches, you've got to watch about 5 other videos of the same fight, until you find a youtuber who really explains the context in details. Sometimes Fight Commentary Breakdown does it, but most of the time he just plays a video, and is wondering what's happening just like us.
So my question is : Does someone know of a channel, or website, where they regularly talk about the latest fights of this kind, and breakdown precisely what's the background of each fighter, what's their supposed level, their age, why are they fighting, under what rules are they fighting, and super important stuff like that ? A bit like Fight Commentary Breakdown, but with just slightly more effort ?
It's really important for the internet to find a go to channel or website for that, as soon as possible, so much misinformation gets spread around by clickbait youtube videos that don't explain anything of the context.
He's not even using Kung fu he's just trying to match the MMA fighting style which he should stick to his own

It's a fact... It doesn't matter what style of Martial Arts you've done if you don't have true fighting experience then a lot of it goes out the window. @True WingChun bro u would get checked so fast in my gym 100%. There are no KF masters cuz KF doesnt work.
KF simply does not offer the tools necessary to compete against an MMA fighter.
Ive trained both KF and MMA. I trained both at very reputable gyms for a number of years and KF simply does not work.
If your skill is so great that you cant use it on anyone for fear of crippling or killing them, what good is it? You cant control it? Guess what happens with a RNC if u dont tap? U die....
Again, MMA guys are very capable of controlling their technique and not crippling or killing people, why are KF masters unable to?
Heres the problem my guy... There are 1000s of videos of KF guys getting absolutely smashed by MMA guys, there are no videos of the opposite. Guys like Master wong dodge any challenge that comes their way.
If your art is so complicated and takes so long to master that no one can do it.... THEN ITS USELESS!!! MMA doesnt take years of ur life and it actually works.
@True WingChun my guy, do me a favor. Prove it to me. Go down to a reputable gym in ur city sign a waiver and spar with a reputable MMA guy......
U know u wont, I know u wont. Ur gonna come up with some excuse about why u cant or wont.
Dude we have KF guys come through my MMA gym weekly.... I see guys like you who are so invested in KF that you believe all the BS about all the mystic powers and super fighting skills...
Like I said, you could simply prove it by going and videoing you dropping some of the MMA guys u say u dropped.

What if the systems were flawed to begin with? Master Wong did an analysis of the fight between the one arm boxer, & the wing chun fighter, & he pointed out why the wing chun fighter lost. Wing chun punches are weak, the foot work are not solid. & that from a wing chun master, lol.

@@nhatho1723 Excellent comment, sir. I understood that reference.
Just some background info. The kung fu guy came into nams gym very arrogant saying he could compete with guys from the UFC. Nam asks if the guy wants to spar in his class but the kung fu guy saw it as a challenge to fight. Even though the kung fu guy never sparred before he said that he was better than most people there.
Mario Yamasaki is proud of this ref.
There was no Chinese Boxing of any style in this. Big Asian dude is a good street fighter that's all. The reason he lost is that he lacked athleticism, stamina and endurance. The thing with mma fighters is if your a good Kung Fu fighter or even street fighter, if you don't knock them out in the first few rounds, you gas and once you gas, your done. Cause athleticism is the secret of MMA. Without athleticism most MMA fighters would be ineffective because sports like Boxing take a high level of fitness to work. Either way he should've been prepared! Best man won!
Wrong. The secret to MMA is pressure-testing and developing effective skills that actually work. Sparring to develop timing, distancing, analyzing cues, defense/offense techniques, footwork etc. Generalizing MMA down to conditioning neglects its superior technical advantages over most traditional arts.
Yeah there are plenty of fit people that can't fight very well.
I don’t understand, even I (some artist) was doing some Kung fu routines and EACH strike had the other hand SIMULTANEOUSLY go up protecting the side of the head down to solar plexus, and this Kung fu guy does NOTHING of the sort, not even once!!! I mean Benny the Jet is a perfect example of how one should apply (at least instinctively) some strategies!
Benny the Jet is awesome!
Anthony Ng It was I think some sort of bajiquan form where before each strike you smash a flat, outstretched forward foot to the ground (like you want to raise dust), keep the stomped foot on ground and taking step while transferring the weight to the stomped foot. At the same time the impulse created by the stomped foot is channeled through the body which strikes with the fist opposite side of the stomped foot(you know how in terms to pivot pelvis together with jab you need to use the opposite foot pushing on ground). Simultaneously with the strike, the opposite arm of the striking arm makes a lightning speed (just as punch) sweep from passing vertical (elbow down) in front of solar plexus to finishing protecting the whole side of the head, palm flat and outwards, forearm parallel to ground or even rather slanted a little (elbow back and higher than palm). Every single step/strike was just like that. It was a very simple form consisting in doing this while turning to all directions or making a few advancing steps or a few steps backwards. I found here a screen capture of an app that at around the1min29 time mark executes very similar moves but only going backwards ruclips.net/video/Nqt8sl-nT3A/видео.html the rest of the form is very different.
Anthony Ng lol yes, for sure! I had the feeling that he underestimated the other guy: he was definitely in a better physical form (besides stance) -the fact that he took many hits in the beginning didn’t lower his stamina! This definitely shows that he trains more regularly than the taller guy.

So disappointing in the videos that the Kung Fu guys don't use kung fu.
For some reason. All fights on this channel are won by MMA. In some way. It kinda looks like a propaganda to MMA.
Kung Fu guys use Kung Fu - in fictional choreographed Kung Fu movies.
@Howard Adderly no it doesn't. Because I learn Kung fu myself and experienced Kung fu masters don't love fighting. MMA do. And this channel is with MMA. Kinda like propaganda.
@Howard Adderly martial arts aren't for fighting but for self defense. I'm not gonna even argue because you have no idea what you are talking about.
@Howard Adderly you didn't really get me. Fighting is different than sparring. And that's why kung fu fighters here are losing. You gotta spar a lot but fighting is when you are defending yourself from real threats. MMA was never superior to Kung fu. It all depends on the fighter himself.
Anyone who took Kung Fu lessons for years, they will always get Kung Fooled!
Honest question.
How much focus does Kung Fu/TMA put into defense? To me, it seems like they focus on distance management but I don't see the same kind of care being put into fighting inside.
a lot, more than half the techniques are types of blocks. the problem is that they don't focus on application and fighting experience and that's really killing them...
