I’m 10, and this is my first ever granny square. I’ve been crocheting for about half a year now and didn’t know how to do a granny square. Thank you so much Robin!
Hi Robin I have been knitting and crocheting since I was a young girl, I'm now 64. For some reason I have always struggled to master the Granny Square even though I have knitted lace stitches no problem. I recently decided to master Granny squares as I have loads of beautiful wool which would be perfect for crochet blankets. I had to go on medication 4 years ago and lost all my creativity as a result. I've really struggled to get back knitting without much success. I thought crochet might be easier so I searched UTube which came up with a number of tutorials. I would really like to compliment you on your tutorial. The instructions were so clear and structured. I'm now very happily crocheting a big granny square blanket. You have made my day. Thank you 😊.
My dear, sweet mama passed in October. She was my best friend and I miss her so much. I found an Afghan that she had made. It is in pretty good shape except for two squares. I was lucky enough to find some yarn at Wal-Mart this morning that matches. But, I don ‘t know how to crochet so I will need to learn. I do know how to knit so I know that I can do this. I am looking forward to this on a cold winter day in Illinois. Thank you so much for this video. You have given a grieving daughter a short break from the pain that I am feeling and a closer connection to my mom.
Robin, you are a hobby savior! I was about to deem crocheting impossible but with your easily comprehensive videos, i see it in a whole new light! You are gold!

Hi! I realize this video has been out for 3 years, but I just decided to learn how to crochet this month. After conquering my first project of slippers, I was obsessed with learning how to make a granny square in 3 colours (because I like to jump into the fire right away). Thank you for creating such an easy to follow tutorial. I just paused and rewatched when needed and you made it so easy. This is now in my favourites and I just have to make 5000 more of these things to make an afghan! (ok, maybe not 5000....).
Thanks for the tutorial! I’ve learned how to crochet from my grandma ( she’s been crocheting for around 15 years) but she’s never made a granny square. And I’ve been crocheting for 4 months and I’ve made like 5 of these. Thank you so much and this has helped me a lot! 💖💖
I haven't crocheted in many years, and I forgot how to start a square..I am making a blanket for my G-baby!! I'm sooooo excited..Thanks for the tutorial!!
I've always wanted to crochet a classic granny square! I have tried in the past, but was too inexperienced and easily intimidated by other tutorials. I've got a whole lot of crochet under my belt now, and this is the perfect video to give it another try! This time I was ready, and as always, your tutorials are perfect! Thank you so much, Robin!❤🎉
I love this way you have done the granny square! Its so much easier then some of the other tutorials I've seen on RUclips. Please keep up the awesome work!
I'm brand new to crocheting, about 5 weeks in. I have completed a few projects but this was my first attempt at a granny square and using multiple colours. Your tutorial was so easy to follow and my square is passable 😅. Not as lovely as yours but for the first try I'm happy and now understand the basic structure. Thank you so much x
I did my first ever granny square with this video! Just started crocheting 2 weeks ago, just learned the basic stitch. I just mastered the double crochet here. Thank you so so much, the instructions are very clear to me and the pattern here is not too complicated so yeah, beginner approved!
Just wanted to say a big thank you for your video. I have just learnt how to crochet at 76. The video was very easy to follow and I am so chuffed to have finally mastered it. A large blanket is in the making. Thank you so much. x
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! I have knitted amigurumi stuff but never an actual useful blanket and making these squares is so addictive! Much love!
I cant BELEIVE HOW EASY THIS IS, yet in really its not. Usually, for every thing i do DIY, at least for the first one i ever do, it looks NOTHING like the one its supposed to look like. .... but mine achually looks like yours and im soo proud! I just started crocheting yesturday lol.
Fantastic video!!! I've been learning/practicing crochet for only 10 days (I've had one 2 hour class) and was able to learn granny squares with you. I'm so excited!! I do recommend watching sections first, going back, and then attempting to follow a section at a time. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! :) PS - I love seeing how many others are learning this in their 70's and 80's -- that's so cool!
I tried to first make a granny square about 3 years ago and gave up after countless tutorials. Thank you so much for helping me. Feeling much more positive now!!!!
My first attempt wasn’t fabulous and I set it down for a week. I just made my second attempt, watching you once again and it worked flawlessly and all made sense. Thank you!
Hooked by Robin - I think you're fantastic and I'm sending you loads of hugs! I used to crochet like this at school - many, many moons ago - but one of my friends would always start me off, so I never learned the proper way to do it until I watched this video. I'm now well on the way to a baby blanket, after a few false starts as my beautiful granddaughter kept interrupting me haha, "Grandma, can I use this, please?" "Grandma, can you open this, please?" etc, etc! I absolutely LOVE your tutorials, you make it so easy for us and I thank you a hundredfold! xx
You were so clear about each step and were there right to the end so patiently repeating everything. Thanks very much to you for all the effort you put into this video for beginners like me. Thanks to you I just completed your granny square and like the way you change colour. Happy spring!
Dearest Robin! I want to thank you so much for your help with this tutorial! From the bottom of my heart! I wish I could show you the progress as I am now in love with my throw 🥰🥰
That was really great instruction! I’ve watched many of other good ones but yours really showed the easiest way. I’m so excited to start my crochet hobby 😊
This is an amazing tutorial! I just started crocheting 3 days ago, and was so scared to attempt granny squares! Robin made it so easy with this tutorial :)
Thank you for this tutorial! Your explanations are very clear and easy to follow. This was my first time making a granny square and my 2nd project ever (after a scarf from another one of your tutorials)! I especially appreciate the ways you give context for why you’re doing certain things, for example you explained that by using a slip stitch, you’re “slipping” or sneaking along the stitch so your tracks aren’t visible and you’re not adding “height”. You also explained how a corner is 3 single crochets… This was so helpful for me, a brand new beginner!
Wonderful class and great video! Thank you so much for your instructive class, I thought I would never be able to learn how to do this granny square, you made it easy. Thumbs Up to you!
So easy to follow. I am changing colours and am making a giant granny square. Thank You for excellent easy to follow instructions for someone never having crochet before.

Your tutorial worked the best for me and really helped me to understand how to make a granny square. Thank you for going slow and showing step by step all the way through. That is so helpful.
I’m 46 years old and have always struggled to learn anything new. From my education to learning a new hobby! My oldest daughter is a crochet master and I’ve only managed to slowly pick up single and double crochet after years. Finally found this video and watched multiple times and following along after one day I’ve gotten the concept and am able to complete one on my own. You are an amazing teacher, I’m going to watch more of your videos. 🙏 thank you so much!
I used to be overwhelmed with tutorials for this pattern leaving me sad and unmotivated 😭 but I was so pleased I bumped into ur video today 🤍🤍🤍🤍 thank you!
aw thank you! What a lovely comment to read - so glad the video helped! x
Big thanks Robin, I'm 60yo and always wanted to learn how to crochet a granny square. I got it now but just got to work on the tension. Thanks from Gold Coast, Australia x
You’re welcome Sarah, tension definitely gets easier with practice and time!😃🧶
THANK YOU! you just learnd me how to make my very first granny square! i'm 12 years old and this video was super easy to follow. i also gotta say that you're voice is very calming🙈 but btw, thank you for helping with my first granny square ❤️
Thank you so much Nina and so happy you managed your first granny square - onwards and upwards from here with crochet.😃🧶
@haha no cool!🧶🧶
Thank you for your tutorial which is so helpful. I have been knitting for years but never got the hang of crocheting until now. You are a wonderful teacher 🤗
Thank you so much Esme!😃🤗
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I must have watched a dozen 'beginner granny square' tutorials and this is the only one that worked for me. Just completed my first proper square! So chuffed. x 💕😀
Omg! You're awesome and I appreciate u so much! ❤ I'm a brand new crocheter. And left handed. Your tutorial was extremely helpful to me, and so simple to follow. Even with me being left handed! I wish we could post pics here of our granny squares. Thanks to you, I just successfully completed my 1st granny square, and absolutely love how it turned out🎉🤩🥰 thankyou SO much!!
Thank you Ashlee, I am glad it helped!😀 If you are left handed, you can convert ANY video on RUclips yourself! Simply go to www.mirrorthevideo.com/ and follow the instructions to mirror flip any video to convert to left handed. As for sharing a photograph, you can find me on social media:

Hi Darci, that was lovely to read - thank you! 5000 did make me laugh though 😂, it can feel like that sometimes with granny squares but so worth it!x
I just finished my first ever actually cute granny square thanks to you!!! THANK YOU FOR MAKING YOUR VIDEOS I ADORE YOU!!!
You’re so welcome Natalie, I’m glad it helped.😃
Thanks for the tutorial!
I’ve learned how to crochet from my grandma ( she’s been crocheting for around 15 years) but she’s never made a granny square. And I’ve been crocheting for 4 months and I’ve made like 5 of these. Thank you so much and this has helped me a lot! 💖💖
Goodness me this is the only tutorial which had taught me to actually do my first granny square I’m definitely awarding you a gold star 🎉🎉
Thank you for the gold star! I’m glad it helped.😃🥳
I haven't crocheted in many years, and I forgot how to start a square..I am making a blanket for my G-baby!! I'm sooooo excited..Thanks for the tutorial!!
i have seen a lot of crochet granny square tutorials but this is the only one that worked out good for me you are such a good teacher😊🙂
Thank you so much, I am glad it helps!😀
I've always wanted to crochet a classic granny square! I have tried in the past, but was too inexperienced and easily intimidated by other tutorials. I've got a whole lot of crochet under my belt now, and this is the perfect video to give it another try! This time I was ready, and as always, your tutorials are perfect! Thank you so much, Robin!❤🎉
You’re so welcome Jillian, did you manage to make one?😃🧶
I know i have said this before but your tone if voice and the way you teach is very top on. Your wonderful thank you ribin
Thank you so much Mary!🥰
I love this way you have done the granny square! Its so much easier then some of the other tutorials I've seen on RUclips. Please keep up the awesome work!
I'm brand new to crocheting, about 5 weeks in. I have completed a few projects but this was my first attempt at a granny square and using multiple colours. Your tutorial was so easy to follow and my square is passable 😅. Not as lovely as yours but for the first try I'm happy and now understand the basic structure. Thank you so much x
this is so helpful! i was struggling with other granny square videos but this one really changed things for me, thank you!
I did my first ever granny square with this video! Just started crocheting 2 weeks ago, just learned the basic stitch. I just mastered the double crochet here. Thank you so so much, the instructions are very clear to me and the pattern here is not too complicated so yeah, beginner approved!
Made my first granny square with this, it’s a fantastic and really easy to follow tutorial ❤
Well done Louise! Are you new to crochet?😀🧶
This is the best crochet tutorial I have watched. Thank you! Not at all bored of hearing you say yarn over.
OMW I have just done my first perfect granny square. Thank you so much 😁👍👍👍
Just wanted to say a big thank you for your video. I have just learnt how to crochet at 76.
The video was very easy to follow and I am so chuffed to have finally mastered it. A large blanket is in the making. Thank you so much. x
You are so welcome!
Thank you! I finally get it. Watch half a dozen videos and yours I understand👍

Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! I have knitted amigurumi stuff but never an actual useful blanket and making these squares is so addictive!
Much love!
You’re very welcome David!😃
Best tutorial ever,, I'm hooked! Thanks for taking the time and caring enough to help teach an awesome skill to many like me🥳🥳
I cant BELEIVE HOW EASY THIS IS, yet in really its not.
I absolutely LOVE your tutorials, you make it so easy for us and I thank you a hundredfold! xx
Thank you so much! 😊 So glad the tutorial has helped you!
@@HookedbyRobin
Definitely! Thank you so much. xx
You were so clear about each step and were there right to the end so patiently repeating everything. Thanks very much to you for all the effort you put into this video for beginners like me. Thanks to you I just completed your granny square and like the way you change colour. Happy spring!
Thank you so much Helen, I am glad it helped and Happy Spring to you too! 😃🌻
Thankyou thankyou thankyou!!! This is the clearest tutorial I have seen so far and I have seen so many as I begin my crochet journey.
You’re very welcome!😃🧶
Hands down the best teacher on RUclips! So clear and concise and SLOW for us newbies, thanks Robin!
You’re welcome Hollie!😃🤗
Dearest Robin!
I want to thank you so much for your help with this tutorial! From the bottom of my heart! I wish I could show you the progress as I am now in love with my throw 🥰🥰
I reviewed several sites and started several squares. All of them hopeless! Your instructions were so clear and really helped me! Thanks...I'm hooked!
That was really great instruction! I’ve watched many of other good ones but yours really showed the easiest way. I’m so excited to start my crochet hobby 😊
Thank you so much Jen and crochet is the best! 😃🧶

I love this Noralle, well done.😃🤗
Thank you so much!!! I am pretty new to crochet (knitter) and every time I'd try a square...get confused, frustrated..you made it so clear and simply.
Glad I could help!
I am 75 and made my first granny square .Thank you for a very clear presentation.Be blessed
This is an amazing tutorial! I just started crocheting 3 days ago, and was so scared to attempt granny squares! Robin made it so easy with this tutorial :)
Thank you so much Taylor! 😃🧶
I’ve watched many videos on granny squares and this is by far the easiest to follow and very pretty! Thank you!
This is a fantastic and perfectly paced tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing!! :)
Robin, you are amazing. I finally made a granny square- all thanks to you!
The written pattern / photo tutorial is on my blog here: byrobin.blogspot.com/2015/02/crochet-granny-square-tutorial.html 🧶👍
I've been doing grannies for years, but I learn better ways from you.
