“Pancho and Lefty” was written by Townes Van Zandt and released in 1972. EmmyLou Harris recorded the song in 1977, and it was her version that led to Willie becoming aware of the song and ultimately choosing to record it as a duet with Merle Haggard in 1983. Their version would rise to #1 on the country charts that same year.
CBS presents “WILLIE NELSON’S 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION,” a concert special honoring the legendary career of music icon Willie Nelson, Sunday, Dec. 17 (8:30-10:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+).

So friggin’ good. Willie’s famous rushed reading of the verses sits so well against Strait’s snapped-to-the-grid delivery. Love too that a Townes tune is so coveted there’s audience shots of the folks singing along.
