I believe Diluc might be a victim of narcissistic abuse, as he probably became a knight of Favonius to please his father. After all, Crepus did not succeed in becoming a knight himself, so he wished for Diluc to do so and probably didn't pay attention to Diluc's true wishes. So I suppose that Diluc learned from early age on that in order to receive love he must not disappoint his father and live the life he expected him to live. I guess this behavioral pattern is one of the reasons why he keeps obsessively defending Mondstadt even after his father's death.

Couldn't it be a bit of both? Frustration at himself and at the current knights? Varka took most of the seasoned knights with him on that mystery expedition that they have yet to return from.

It can definitely be both, but I think it’s mainly his loss that is motivating him, and his annoyance at the knights helps with more justification.

I have no idea if Eroch is actually associated with one of the old Noble clans, but in the Manga he had one of the positions the Albedo currently holds - Captain of the Investigation Team, Which explains his involvement. He had probably been assigned to investigate the attack.
What's even more interesting is that he had later been revealed to be a traito of some sort to the Knights of Favonius.

I'm actually writing a fanfic about my OC who used to be an archery captain in Fontaine's military. One of the reasons she quit was because she got captured by Dottore and ended up being rescued three months later by Diluc and not the army, which caused her to completely lose faith in them.
