I would put a little bit thinner layers and more of them, specially the first one, the very first one should barely be noticeable, then add two more as it has completely dried. Thats atleast how we paint heavy duty on ships, but that is on a steel surface ofcause so maybe this is different?
+SportSoulLife It is always better to do it like you guys do, more thinner layers. Doesn't matter what is the surface, better paint quality at the end. It takes more time so people who do it for $ will look for a quicker way to get more work done.
I sand blasted mine at work. Primed it twice before putting my paint on. I also threw some clear coat on it afterwards. Remember there's 2 types of paint. ceramic or enamel. Don't mix them.
Old video, but I just found it. If you like the look of the bare aluminum ,look at "Eastwood" Products they have alot of coatings that will protect ,raw aluminum finish. Also this author ,should release the nozzle at every pass. Spray stroke, release , spray stroke release......you do the same painting a car with a spray gun. Don't just hold the nozzle ,continuosly . How ,anybody ,finds the time, to record ,edit, upload...then take the flood of comments, is like becoming the President ,a very thankless job. Good beginner video, good job.
Repdan1 It will depend on several factors. First of all the type of metal that the cover is made out of and secondly whether or not the engine paint has held up well. The parts of the cover where the engine paint has stayed on well will be more shiny than the parts of the cover that have been exposed to the elements without the protection of the engine paint.
Why didn't you remove the timing cover from the engine case ? The next time you need to remove this cover it will be stuck to the casing and spoil the otherwise perfect finish when you remove it.
I have a 1970 cb350 I'm restoring. Would a fine wire brush attachment for my drill be alright to use on the unpainted covers to take off rust and corrosion? As well as a decent buildup of dirt?
next time. The first layer should not cover the surface fully, only partially, doing this you are creating a adhesive surface that the 2nd and 3rd layer will have a better surface to bond to. ;)
Great series. I have had a 1972 350 since I was 13. It has just been sitting since. Finally started the restoration about a month ago. Any tips on where to find original parts? I have been having a hard time. Most of what I find is for the 4 cylinder. Thanks for any help.
it's a good idea to wash with a thiners after using the heavy duty duty paint stripper incase there's any left on the surface, it would trash your new paint work,
Idk why but it always bugs me when people paint the screws in a side cover. I like them to be shiny and it only takes 5 minutes to throw a buffing wheel on and polish them. Plus the paint would get trashed by a screw driver the first time you use it.
You should be using etch primer on bare metal surfaces, it bonds to the metal better than generic 'primers'. Plus you should do more than one coat and then wet sand untill smooth, clean and then basecoat and clear coat after, which you didn't show
would you recommend to paint the left and the right engine covers? I had a gas leak and it's damaged the paint on my left cover.. i'm thinking of repainting it. The right one's fine though. I'm just thinking in terms of paint matching..
Hello. What method you use to clean/degrease the oily and dirty aluminium parts? I know oven cleaner works fine but it eats aluminium. Pressure washer with some soap, dunno. Share your ideas/ experience. Tia.
I would personally have taken the oil fill cap out and the crank case cover off, then given it a few clear coats. But as they say in Venice, whatever floats your boat.
Joey Dahmus It sounds a little harsh to me but without seeing it it is hard to say. I would start slow with the drill and make sure it doesn't do any damage to the metal and then continue from there.
So basically the point of this video is: follow directions on the can. Pro tip... leave the filter cover and fasteners in place when you paint for a real high-dollar look
Nigel Fisher The easiest way to tell is if there is anywhere visible where the paint has either come off or started to crack. if you are planning on restoring it you could put some paint remover on it and see if any paint bubbles off.
Does it have to be engine spray paint? I have one that can take extreme heat, doesn't say anything about engine but I think it should work for engine cover. Any thought?
try to get the 1500 degree high heat, or settle for 1400....I have painted mine on a 1978 RD400 . been 12 years still looks good, also paint my chambers every year. ey for 10 bucks whewwww whooo.
This is an aluminum case, however I believe it would work on a magnesium case. You should check whatever engine enamel you are planning on using to see if it is applicable to magnesium but the process would be the same for aluminum or magnesium.
Just buffing it will bring a natural shine.Bottle spray paint will not stay longer than a year. May be he made this video for people who want a quick paint job.
Its not that hard... If your parting out a bike just start undoing bolts and shit. But if your gonna rebuild it (judging by your lack of knowledge i dont think you will be) id have a professional rebuild
Good prep awful execution paint on screws will crack the minute you touch them with a screw driver and filter cover itself will not come off easy now and will surely mark the paint trying to remove
1:20. Make sure you get all the aircrafts off of the engine cover
Nice painting video. I really liked it. I am about to restore my 1988 Yamaha RX100 and this video is certainly helpful to me. Good work.
Rom rom bhai gujar
It doesn't actually say primer on it.
But if you look on it. It says primer.

Huh? haha!
I like to use VHT caliper paint in a spray can. I also like to remove screws and filler caps...
spotthedogg Even better VHT have a very high degree paint for engines & exhausts.
Aircraft remover.. so I pour this on my aircraft and it removed it?

You mean only one coat of primer?

Good painting video but painting the screws and plate is pretty dumb.
it's a good idea to wash with a thiners after using the heavy duty duty paint stripper incase there's any left on the surface, it would trash your new paint work,

thats why powdercoat is better
Some people like them painted! I agree with you. I like the stainless bolt look myself.
That why you polish it when you take them out
totally agree
why did u leave the screws on?

Looks great. What colour top coat did you use?
I have a 1990 Suzuki Dr250s and my engine looks the same as this^ will it come up as shiny as yours does?
Nice clean job.
Hello.

Brake cleaner followed by soap and water
After watching Itchiban Moto's channel I can no longer how-to's on youtube.
Motorcycle Restoration Channel Hey, what is this cover made of? Which metal?
I would personally have taken the oil fill cap out and the crank case cover off, then given it a few clear coats.
But as they say in Venice, whatever floats your boat.
The cap was originally painted to match also. He’s restoring so it makes sense.
yea thanks man learned alot. You should continue making how to video for motorcycle restorations

Get channel. I've got a Yamaha XJR1300 that I'm just about to start restoring. How do I tell if the engine is painted on this model ?
Nigel Fisher The easiest way to tell is if there is anywhere visible where the paint has either come off or started to crack. if you are planning on restoring it you could put some paint remover on it and see if any paint bubbles off.
What paint did you used? Nice job
Does it have to be engine spray paint? I have one that can take extreme heat, doesn't say anything about engine but I think it should work for engine cover. Any thought?
What's the max temperature the paint takes?
Is it necessary to make ply with enamel?... Can I just paint it
I was wondering what paint color you used? Was it dupli-color cast coat aluminum?
I didn't use the cast coat aluminum I used the Dupli-Color engine enamel Aluminum.
Ok thanks it looks great and really close to the original color. Thanks again
Nice work ! How about after you stripped the paint , you polished it instead ? That would have been cool.
Motorcycle RESTORATION Channel.
Marvel mystery oil works on removing original finish
what the color number of this paint ? it's awesome!
Hang the object you want to paint. Hold the spray can upright and you should be able to get higher quality finish.
Vapor blasting if available makes aluminum look amazing.
Do you use a top coat afterwards or just leave the paint as top coat?
I used a clear coat of engine enamel made by the same brand
Motorcycle Restoration Channel whats the other name of aircraft remover?
Polish is best solution for this cover.

After you got it clean and all nice and shinny. Why didn't you just clear coat it instead of painting aluminum.
C EST BEAU.

biohzrd1x1 he has tape over it
Kick start fellas. Not sight glass, dipstick.
Just wiping it with a paper towel will leave contaminants.
