  • Green Signals co-presenters Nigel Harris and Richard Bowker CBE were invited to give evidence to the Transport Select Committee on HS2 on November 8th, where they were also joined by Prof Andrew McNaughton.
The content of this select committee session is the subject of Green Signals Episode 6 (Why scrapping HS2's 36 miles from Birmingham to Crewe is utter madness!). This is the full video of their appearance at the committee.

I’m about halfway through this video and I’m loving it! Thank you! “Stop mucking about with it” had me smirking. Well done all!

@@GreenSignalsoh I did! I’ve never watched a Committee meeting before but gosh this was fascinating. One thing it seems to me from the last bit is that they’re now asking questions about scrutiny of the initial decision. I feel that’s a bit late now isn’t it? It’s been decided on and half of the project is built, it needs to be finished otherwise it’s a half arsed project.
I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be continuing scrutiny of the project seeing as it’s public money, however it is quite clear that the cancellation of Phase 2 has not been properly thought through and costed.
I hope now that there’s a new Government and a highly competent person appointed as Minister of Transport that it can be relooked at.
(Also, good on you all for keeping so cool and calm throughout this meeting! Not sure I’d have the patience)

Very interesting viewing, and I do believe the whole of HS2 should be built.
On a side note to Nigel, the ECML electrification was done on a budget, and each time the wind blows, the wires come down. The GWR electrification, while much more expensive, is much more resilient in windy and bad weather.

Really engaging viewing indeed. Well done to you all for managing to keep your cool in some ‘interesting’ questioning. For me, the greatest put down was the later comment made by Prof McNaughton when he said that ‘Crewe WILL be dug up’……..

Thanks Simon. He did of course mean Crewe station.....! Cheers. Richard

Now ex-MP Jack Brereton trying his best (and failing spectacularly) to sound like he knew what he was talking about. Even had the gall to doubt and dismiss what Professor McNaughton said about capacity at Crewe. The Professor had more railway experience and knowledge in his little finger over a time period exceeding the time Mr Brereton had been alive..

Brilliant ! thank you gentlmen and experts. I am gathering HS2 is going forward, but on a slower track and with more detail engineering and cost scrutiny. Great going. Please get HS2 to Crewe !

HS2 Phase 1 is proceeding but that goes only as far as Birmingham and, via a separate spur, to a junction on the West Coast Main Line. Cancelling the section to Crewe in particular, is especially stupid.

It's interesting watching this 5 months after it happened. Crossrail/Elizabeth Line is a prime example of what was being talked about. By all accounts Elizabeth Line is creacking at the seems only two years after it was fully opened and requiring extra trains already.

I don't think there are any examples of a significant increase in rail capacity that did not subsequently prove the right thing to do. Crossrail and Jubilee Line Extension are two good examples in London and the West Coast Route Modernisation another good example on the national network.

Are you sure that bloke at the right of the guest panel isn't Bob Mortimer in disguise?

A cut and paste of the TSC! I was hoping you’d get into the detail with Andrew over his career, time at NWR, what he thought of them abolishing his post of Dir Eng when he left. GWEP over specification and it’s effect on further electrification etc etc. He’s a fascinating and knowledgable guy.

To an extent Graham, yes. But we suspected that many people would not have been be able to sit through the whole TSC hearing. But your points on Andrew are spot on. Not only is he fascinating and knowledgable, he's terrific company as you know and we could have talked for hours. So we will definitely be inviting him back in due course and all the points / questions you raised will ceratinly be on the list.

Euston station should be built as a national symbol to the railway and the future of Britain. It should not be overbuilt as retail/office buildings.

    • @GreenSignals
      @GreenSignals  4 месяца назад

Well, we agree it should not be overbuilt, but whether it needs to be a national symbol, not entirely sure. But it sure needs to be built!

The hazard of electing the uninformed and disinterested and then permitting them to make long term policy. Fiasco.

Bob - I think the democratic process is probably sound enough - but I tend to agree with you on the uninformed and disinterested aspects!
