4:08 As a labour rights expert regularly conducting social audits and knowing full well international ILO conventions and the laws that govern minimum wage, let me say: You won’t be surprised to hear that that is NOT how you calculate hourly pay. Bonus pay has nothing to do with hourly pay, because bonus fluctuates and is not paid out equally to each member of staff if at all. I don’t know what he means with holiday pay. It seems like he is referring to a payout of money that workers receive annually as they couldn’t take their LEGALLY REQUIRED annual leave. Annual leave should only be restricted in very rare circumstances and should not be by design be calculated as a payout! Lastly, he says guaranteed overtime pay. Again, workers shouldn’t be required to work overtime because the hourly pay rate is not sufficient to live off. This goes to the actual heart of the matter. Also, again, overtime should only be worked in rare instances, and NOT by design. Now on ships, shift work is common and shift patterns can be such that long work days for several weeks are compensated by prolonged time off after, but that is a different story and doesn’t negate the fact that overtime (or annual leave pay) is not to be counted as hourly pay. There is NO SUCH THING as ‘consolidated hourly pay’. This is laughable.
He might be morally bankrupt but the company isn’t breaking the law so I don’t see how this guy is a criminal….btw I don’t think it’s right and they should pay more but I know this cost would be passed to the customer.

Brian Thompson would be so proud of you, he’s looking down smiling at you.
It is so self evident that this has been rehearsed many times. He clearly has so much to hide and was terrified of an ad hoc slip up, his lawyers will have scripted ALL responses and ensured he only answered with the exact words prepared.
Remember when the UK minimum wage was implemented by Tony Blair the tories voted against it every step of the way.
This is how the big uk businesses would behave without that safeguard - it was one of the most important steps ever for working class people.
Excellent point.
Sure, but if minimum wage doesn’t keep up with inflation it’s still not great. If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation over the past 20 years, it would be more like £20 an hour- almost double what it is currently!
Agreed, check out this guy's salary and bonus for last year as a contrast to what they pay their workers...
@@arghjayem are you sure £20 an hour? that seems like a high figure.

What an utter scumbag he should be made to pay all his employees back pay😡
Our government have allowed them to get away with this. 🙈

They're actually in French and British waters and their competitors on the Dover-Calais route already pay way more than P&O.
Yes. I would never use P and O
G’day from Brisbane Queensland Australia. Bring that P&O thief over here to Australia and let him try that in front a Federal Senate enquiry. And he would be told answer the questions correctly or you could face major fines of up to $100000.00 and or serious Gaol time of not less than one year.
What a grub this person is to treat his employees with such disdain, he hasn’t the balls to take on the mighty CFMMEU and the Maritime Union of Australia division. P&O and the Liberal Conservative has been taught a very hard lesson do not try that international shit here or you will suffer the consequences for your actions and misdeeds against any worker. The Questioner should be asking this dill how he and P&O fairs in Australia with this sort of attitude to workers.
What a disgrace. Guy should be utterly ashamed of himself.

This man is very very greedy how can anyone live on that hourly rate he really is a very very very nasty employer.
He's a criminal, nothing more
He might be morally bankrupt but the company isn’t breaking the law so I don’t see how this guy is a criminal….btw I don’t think it’s right and they should pay more but I know this cost would be passed to the customer.

On the contrary, it's very much alive and well. Have a gander at the rental market in the UK, a whacking great slice of exploitation with a huge dollop of extortion spooned on top.

@@keithpop3097 saying that it's okay because 'employees choose' is the dumbest and most incorrect argument only simple minded fools use. There's a minimum wage and living wage for a reason, that to survive it takes x amount per hour. If they hire people from the UK, they should pay our minimum wage. They have an international min wage mainly for workers in lower paid countries where they need a lower wage to stay in business, as goods and services are way cheaper there.
Pay him that rate and see what he says!

As an international business we feel we should be able to get away with paying staff as little as the international markets will bare.

@kevinb9830 where it is legal.
How is this an issue? If the employees thought they were 'underpaid' then they're free to look elsewhere to satisfy their greed.
I will never use p&o!
5:04 - 5:45 What he is implying here without actually saying it, is that they will most likely continue to only comply with ILO and MLC standards (i.e. international labour laws). He has no intention of complying with either French or UK law. My guess is their vessels are not sailing under the UK flag. Oftentimes, companies sail under random flags like Bermuda to avoid being bound by countries with strong labour laws.
9:50 Ah yes. It’s a very common practice to use agencies and staff from low-wage counties, because it does exactly what I said above. It allows you to circumvent compliance with the high labour standards of the country.

Everyone seems to be jumping up and down in horror. £4 an hour is shockingly low if you live and work in the UK agreed, but this company isn't operating within the UK...it's operating in international waters and employs an international workforce. If you happen to be Indian and get paid £4 an hour you'd think all your Xmases came at once because the minimum wage there is about 27p an hour.....come a little closer to home and Albania a neighbour of Greece and a country on tthe edge of Europe and the min wage is about £2 an hour. Come into Europe and Portugal min wage is £4.40. Bulgaria which is still in Europe is about £2.70....You won't find anyone from Albania, Portugal, Bulgaria complaining
In other words… we have been able to get away with paying next to nothing and take huge bonuses for ages so we are happy to pay our staff peanuts
It's important you compare apples with apples, and shite with shite. If you pay staff less, he the board and the hardworking shareholders can have more. Simples.
