  • A brief History of the East London Line (ELL). From the original Thames Tunnel to being used by every company in the South East to then being slowly dismantled. It is now a critical route for East London on the Overground.

I remember when Overground came through and nobody thought much it, but it totally changed public transportation in South East London.

it is better than the QEII railway with its hard seats and too big for one station in west london

The tunnel was shut for a while around 1995 for maintenance. During this time a bus replacement service was run using 2 routes: ELT ran from Surrey Quays round the estate (stopping at bus stops) to Rotherhide station and thence through the Rotherhide Tunnel to Wapping and Whitechapel - it used Star Rider single deck midibuses; the ELX ran from Surrey Quays fast to Rotherhide and thence off down Jamaica Road towards Tower Bridge - it used double deckers.

During the London Transport era, Surrey Quays was known as Surrey Docks [station]. I'm sure there will be many older London residents who remember specials from Liverpool Street that ran via the East London Line - a friend of mine among them!

Hey love this video! Can't wait to see more like this! I loved your animations but I would have liked to see the transitional period between it being a London Underground line, then closing, then being taken over by London Overground.

Fascinating! I travelled Whitechapel - Forest Gate via New Cross Gate regularly in the 00s. I saw St Mary's Curve and often wondered about its purpose.

Thanks this was exactly the content I was looking for.
You might like to consider making a video on the problems of success that Canada Water station has, particularly now the massive redevelopment of the Surry Quays and the Print Works is now underway.

Can you do a video on proposed developments on the East London line and other lines south of the river, like the Hayes (Kent) line?

I'd like to see the New Cross branch extended via St. John's to Lewisham.

Love your videos man, can you do an update to the 2050 tube map video that you made a few a few months back with the bits that you missed and some speculative ideas? Videos like that are my favorite. Thanks!

Hi Ashley, in 1933 the line was handed over to the London Passenger Transport Board, (LPTB) not the London Transport Passenger Board as you stated.

To be fair, on Southern trains, Sydenham is pronounced as "siddenham"

The East London Line could of extended to East Croydon and to Broad Street with a triangle spur. Plus with the grinding in the background 😂

And as you said New Bermondsey station. It would also serve the Millwall FC “The Den” stadium.

Substantial video. Looks like London and the UK have spent considerable investment on the Tube Underground since 2000. Something seldom seen in Canada. Albeit there is the new Eglinton line in Toronto, 30 years after the last big subway development.

    • @cameronallan5624
      @cameronallan5624 3 года назад +2

That is the issue in the UK. London takes practicaly all the transport investment. Places up north are crying for this kinda of investment, especially Machester and Leeds. Yet everything goes to London.

@@cameronallan5624 Being Canadian, we just automatically assume England has the most extensive Rapid Transit system in the world. The commute from Oxford or Cambridge into London, is the same as I did for 32 years between Barrie and Toronto Ont.
