In this CJ's Resource Center video, Bill, Freddy & the crew at CJ's discuss a clash of titans, Supercharger vs Turbo!
Supercharging and Turbocharging both have their own unique draw to entice a car enthusiast's attention. Whichever way you choose is best suited for your purposes, it's clear to see that they each offer a custom design for empowering your vehicle with added horsepower.
Air compressors that are moved by an exhaust gas turbine are turbochargers. When an engine forms extra energy, that's how a turbo is efficiently powered. Superchargers however, do require the use of engine power to run. Air compressors that are moved by the crankshaft of an engine and correspond to a belt are superchargers.
Let us know which you think is better and stay tuned for some great new installments. Also, if you have any tips, tricks or recommendations, don't hesitate to shout out to us. Post in the comments below, we look forward to hearing your thoughts!

I generally like superchargers on American muscle, and turbos on imports
That Guy With the Pointlessly Long Username That You Are Wasting Your Time Reading Right Now exactly but some
Ppl do opposite idk why
Turbochargers tend to have more power than superchargers I noticed that alot
You got to the bottom line good job
I notice on street outlaws the use more turbos than superchargers.
@@mantlecollector you do realize street outlaws is fake as hell
I’ve done both, but for a daily driver I find the super charger creates a more fun and instantaneous response around town. But holy shit! I always loved the highway feel when I had the twin turbos and I didn’t really find them that laggy like other people complain about.
I'd go Hellion TT setup if you plan going beyond 700hp. Roush products are amazing for street/strip, but if I'm paying a premium price I'll go TT.
I prefer superchargers. Instant tourqe!
88TransAmGTA you need instant grammar classes
lol.
kinda prefer anti-lag systems with a turbo... sound better imo
T1GR3S13 haha
88TransAmGTA jk bro
the end was the best part, lmao 😂
Haha thank you!
definetly not scripted..lol.. Bill lost it..lol.. hilarious
I've been a turbo guy all my life, but man, the brutal instant punch a positive displacement supercharger gives is really putting me on the fence
I loved the end hahaha.
"But I'm right."
**** YOU!
Awesome explanation! Thumbs up as always!
Thank you!
Vid was a trip! Good points on all. Preference here is a nice centrifugal. Linear control, storming top end. But I grew up in the Fox body days with Vortech and Paxton going at it, and a relatively newcomer, Procharger. Setup will be a bottom end with an F1 series Procharger on my 13 GT. But all power adders are great and have their merits.
Superchargers just make more sense for having fun on the street. They're also a lot more consistent.
OMG that bit at the end; had me dying 😂 Great video guys!
alright so do I supercharge my shelby gt350r on forza horzion 3 or turbocharge it?
Whichever makes more power!
In forza, it seems the way to go it Turbo
Mustang's Understood he’s talking about a video game lol
Game game fucking sucks
Lmaoooooo
General rule of thumb.. if your staying under 1000hp.. supercharged. Anything over.. go turbo
What if your at exactly 1khp 👀
I plan on building my gt350 but don't know what i want to add *I'll be getting it with a year or so
the last bit let you into the world behind the camera lol bill seems to have a damn good sense of humor! don't know if you have it but bloopers seem like it would be funny to watch.
Search our channel, we have multiple blooper videos posted :)
I love the feeling of the boost building up in a turbocharged engine. I'm by no means an expert at all on cars but it I definitely like this characteristic of turbochargers. I also think the sound from belt-driven superchargers sound annoying to me.
Centrifugal superchargers bring on power the same way turbos do, with a build up that keeps on pulling and pulling. It's positive displacement superchargers that have instant power delivery.
definitely supercharger!
That supercharger whine has me in love supercharger all the wayyyy
I know this is a mustang channel, but a 2004 - 2006 Heffner Ford gt1000 twin turbo set up makes over 950hp @ 15psi. A stock 2004 - 2006 Ford GT after market 3.4L whipple, positive displacement, produces around 750 - 780 hp @ 19psi. The cost difference is huge though. I know that two cars with the same power to weight ratio perform about the same whether they are supercharged or turbocharged.
I'd have to go with supercharger. Nice video!!!
Would have been nice if he went over the difference in lag via rpm and top end with a twin scroll turbo vs standard turbo on the V8 .
should have done a dyno comparison. at the same boost
Black Dragn wouldn't work because different size blower to turbo ect you would have to dyno and get power the same then say Turbo was on 10psi and supercharger was on 5psi or visa versa to make 600rwhp
Okay so measure a small turbo at 10psi against a huge turbo at 10psi, you dumb fuck.
@@norgepalm7315 ahahahaha ,smiles , like your form brotha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I honestly love the sound of a turbo charge car but I'm looking into getting a supercharger
lmao you guys crack me up, I like the supercharger myself.
Haha thanks for watching!
Super chargers all the way
Yessss
Nothing better than hearing your turbo spool up.
It's been a been a while since I looked up prices on both but about 8 years ago a supercharger kit ran for about 4600 dollars whereas a decent turbo kit ran for about 800. Is it the other way around now?
bro
I wasn't ready for the ending lol 😂😂😂
I love a supercharger; a muscle car just suits a supercharger😮 they suit each other
I’m between the Mustang GT and Ecoboost. I love that whoosh sound aloot! But I also love that deep growl of a v8!
Both can be fun cars, I prefer the power potential and sound of the coyote personally but have had fun with both.
I wish they put the 3.5 EcoBoost engine from the SHO, into the EcoBoost mustang.
Compound boost! Best of Both worlds.
Oh yes!
Volvo is making some kind of compound setup that is crazy efficient and powerful.
Stupid question maybe, if turbos use exhaust to spin and inject more air to engine, can you have a super charger and turbo chargers with a linked airflow to the engine for more airflow? Or this is just one or the other. Picturing in my head like a T valve airflow coming from turbos and super going down a connected airflow into engine. Maybe I'm just nuts.
I prefer superchargers I love that instant power under your right foot and that sound but I do want a turbo as I have never owned one I have driven a couple sort of reminded me of a slow automatic transmission you put your foot down then wait for it to kick down a gear then your gone hahaha. but they are fun on boost and I love that jet sound but don't like the blow-off valve sounds like someone with hayfever lol.
I'm stuck between a procharger f1a and a twin turbo kit for the s550 coyote
The gen3 coyotes have DI... is there a turbo kit that takes full advantage of DI? That would be awesome.
I say turbos on anything with 6 cylinders or less and superchargers on anything with 8 or more
Supercharger all the way!!!! Love the high pitched whine in a supercharger
The real question here is: Should I get a Gallo 12 or Gallo 24 for my Pony?
Kivin Torres didn’t know a pizza place made engines
Is there a supercharger for a V6? The type that sits on the engine?
There was a company called Xcharger that made a kit that used the Cobra blowers but I have not heard anything from them in awhile. The most popular supercharger for the v6 is the Vortech which is centrifugal and mounts on the front of the engine with the accessories.
Teng Xiong what sort of V6 the Holden Commodore in Australia had a top mount Eaton supercharger on the 3.8 Buick V6
If you’re talking about the non turbo 3.7 v6 yes. Procharger makes a kit for it. Look up thatdudeinblue. He put the kit on his 3.7 and it makes pretty impressive numbers
supercharger for street turbo for racing.
You said it
It's literally the opposite. Turbo lag = decreased performance for racing applications, but allow you to maintain something with a ridiculous amount of HP and still utilize it as a daily driver. Superchargers the power is always there.
800 hp that's always there is a bitch for daily driving on the street.
800 hp that's only there when I'm above 3-4k rpms makes street use enjoyable.
That's also before we even get into fuel efficiency differences.
Exactly, that's why turbochargers are on efficient economy cars now.
what? i can see u dont race at a track. in a track setting ur always up.in the high rpm's so theres no such thing as lag up there and since a turbo can spin alot.faster and more.reliably than a supercharger is why is bette for track use. supercharger being that u stop and go and arent revvinf the shir out of ur car is the better option as far as fas mileage well not gonna get into that but depends how u drive mostly
Jesus H Medrano Way to leave out the entire part where you still have to drive it everyday, genius.
The easy way to find out witch is best, is to put them thru the tests.1/4 mile runs and track time.
Okay how about twin turbo or supercharger?
Great video! I have the 15 GT manual with 3:31 and want to go ahead with the phase 1 roush S/C will the manual trans keep together with this add on?
I have 26,000 miles on mine without any trans issues, a good shifter like the Barton Hybrid 3 is a must have though.
Every supercharger kit I've looked at is over $5,000 for my truck.... I'm going with the turbo. It's going to be about $3,500..... Plus I'd rather be whistling(turbo noise) than whining (supercharger noise)
Where have you seen that? I got quoted for a kit from a few different shops and all of them wanted at least 2k more than the supercharger kits.
Hey Freddy you can install an engine from shelby cobra to Ford Mustang ecoboots ?
what's the maintenance of the supercharger and the turbo?
Unfortunately they dont discuss the real problems one should consider. depending on which turbo kit you get the amount of heat generated will burn your wiring harness and ecu to a crisp if you do not spend a enough on heat protection. Are you putting your power adder on a daily driver or a weekend warrior. My turbo ls3 camaro was awsum for about 3 months of daily driving then wires started cracking and breaking so I had to buy about$400 in d.e.i. heat control products and the kit came with heat wrap.but obviously not enough. I still prefer a turbo for the win.
supercharged 100%
Have you had any issues with the Roush tvs supercharger?
I installed my Roush SC about a year ago and had initial computer bugs, Roush released all of the system upgrades by 09/16 and after that my Mustang is happy. I bought the latest one (727 HP).
Love the ending. Never had a blower or supercharger always been a NA kinda guy
The raw power and responsiveness of NA cant be beat, if it was as easy and affordable to get the same power out of an NA setup as forced induction I'd stay NA all day.
Great video as usual- thanks!
great video, question, is Hellion the only turbo option for 2015-2017 GT?
do you know any other brand?
JPC Racing has a kit and several others are in the pipeline.
M Ishaq they use Garrett and precision turbos hear in Australia
I have a Turbo Coupe automatic. and a supercharged manual in. And I will take my supercharged boost on demand any day.
correct me if im wrong but saying that SC get instant power is kinda silly and doesn't explain the full story. the boost level directly corresponds to the RPMs so yeah you can say you have boost from 1kRPMs all the way to redline but you don't hit peak boost till redline where in a turbo application sure you wont hit boost till like 20% of the way to redline but you will hit peak boost way faster making for a much more fun torque curve.
You are correct on centrifigal superchargers like Vortech and Paxton. They make peak boost at high RPM. Positive displacement superchargers like the TVS on my car make instant full boost when you hit the gas. My car makes 10-11 psi from 2000 all the way to 7200. That makes them a lot of fun on the street, while the turbo is spooling I am already at full boost.
@@Zerogivengarage just say street tires at the track, you can't put that instant power to the ground = turbo win. To be real most races on the street now are roll races. Those RUclips videos of supercharged vehicles racing and a Supra blasts buy them like there standing still makes you wonder - wt.....and turbos as its been said numerous times are way easier to drive in stop and go traffic.
How about starting the Engines?
Is it too much to ask for both?
I like the turbo better. I saw the install video from these guys and I don't like the fact that the block has to be cut to fit the blower.
Have you seen what kind of install a turbo requires on a Mustang? Haha...
where can i find a kit for a 2001 3.8 V6 mustang supercharger
I Heard that Ford will use a Twin Turbo V8 for the New 2018 Shelby GT500!...Meanwhile I live in California!...is there a 50 State Street Legal Twin Turbo setup for the 2015+ Mustang GTs?...Thanks and God Bless!
There are lots of rumors about the new GT500, we will just have to wait and see. There are lots of turbo kits out there but I don't know of any that are CARB certified.
David J. Smith Turbonetics makes a single turbo kit for the 5th gen Camaros that's CARB legal. Check and see if they make a kit that's for the Mustangs.
I cant find a video strictly discussing centrifugal superchargers vs turbos for a 99 honda civic and for a 1996 mustang gt 4.6l 2v and with a centrifugal can i change boost like turbos and do the pully? Sorry for noob question but dont trust alot of what i hear in person and what would be better for a 500hp set up daily driven but taken to the track and raced regularly i want good power high end but would like quick spool
To change boost on a supercharger you simply need to change the pulley but make sure you have proper fuel for the additional power.
I'm trying to find a supercharger for a 2005 tiburon v6, but unlucky I can't find it, any suggestions
Ask some mechanics / shops nearby
Hence the installation of aftermarket superchargers is easy, can I add a supercharger to already turbocharged cars, in a way to marriage both of them in order to prevent lagging and to gain better performance, in another meaning the best of both in one(We usually hear about 2 in 1 or whatever in one in most good products out there in the market, but can this type of marriage work on cars)... Has anybody thought about this before?!.
Can you put a turbocharger and a supercharger on a 1994 f150?
HAHAH LOL love the ending to this :D
Twin Turbos less ware on drivetrain , ideal for daily driven, more efficient , more power with less boost & more smiles per gallon.
Way harder to install, far more maintenance, more that can go wrong.
@@janetsminten8196 .. not if you go with a reputable brand it’s pretty straight forward, 0n3 is crap , if it’s professionally installed/tuned it’s virtually bulletproof.
Epic ending
Thanks!
Which one is more reliable?
I'll go with the whipple 2.9l for my 2017 mustang
He said more smiles per gallon😂
Do you recommend I put a supercharger on my 2015 ecoboost? Would the engine take all that power with a turbo as well and what is the best most reasonable priced kit supercharger for my EcoBoost? Any help would be awsome
I think you want something like this :) www.cjponyparts.com/cp-e-turbo-kit-atmosphere-reroute-with-precision-5858-turbocharger-and-tial-black-mv-r-external-wastegate-ecoboost-2015-2019/p/TKCP1/
Do a dyno test to see what makes more per psi
Can I use both
At what point is boost even worth it? Let's say my car runs 12.5s right now, n/a no forged internals. Is it even worth boosting it or should I focus on assembling the short block with stronger parts?
That is entirely up to you, but what about assembling the block with stronger parts and then boosting?
focused313 assuming you have a coyote. People run 700+ wheel HP on stock internals. I think you should go FI and save up to build the motor
focused313 guaranteed unless your going with the largest stroker possible you will get more power per dollar out of boosting than a monster N/A motor
Most engine's can take 10 psi of boost. Any more your risking it
Very good video guys!
Thank you!
Can you install both?
always Gonna Pick supercharger for American muscle & turbo for imparts 🤟🏽🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯 but in my opinion supercharger wine sounds wayyyy More Badass then a turbo
Well said :)
So twin turbo or supercharger for my corvette
The end was great
Where do you go for a supercharger I have a 2019 mustang eco bust stock ... need help for mods
We offer larger turbo kits for the Ecoboost.
We need to hear them also...
Im watching this while irma is passin by
Irma the tolk
Turbo is the way to go now days
Absolutely!
why now days ???
Matt Lenco that's a lie. You use synthetic oil with turbos. Not gonna have issues
Do u need 93 octane for turbo?
Thats not a lie. I use synthetic oil and my car (bmw 335i) burns at least a quart every 3-4000 miles. Many turbo bmw's do this
Holy shit, just imagine if a Super Snake or Hellcat had been Turbocharged from factory. You would EASILY be looking at tuned street cars that were making 1000hp+ and driving them to the grocery store.
Flame me if you like, but the potential to turn up the boost of a turbocharged car has a ton more capability. In an all out boost war you cant beat turbo, and the torque curve is always steeper across the graph.
It always comes down to what you what your goals are with your particular car/engine. If I was going to generally have a street car primarily, the Supercharger would be a no brainer.
Flame on. I don't give a damn. :-)
Torque curve is better than posi blower ????? lol. You can change pulley sizes on super chargers. As far as making 1000 hp from the factory I don't think the manufacturers trust their internals enough to offer a good warranty yet. I know they shortened the hellcats warranty
lbs for lbs of boost, NOTHING makes as much power as turbos.
yeah but it's on/off. I like big n/a type power. I want it to feel like I got a 600 plus cube motor lol
I'll have one of each please
Hey Bill who do you think would be faster in a drag race your Mustang or a 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1?
It would be a drivers race for sure. I have a little more power, the ZL1 has more torque. I only raced my car once but it went 11.15@124 on 17 in drag radials that my stock clutch was not a fan of.
Time for a McLeod Bill!
I plan on an RST in the spring
billy heaton
Bill's Mustang has the Roush supercharger installed fool.
Supercharged!!!
you have a supercharger for 2014 v6
If there was only version combining both the best of both world. It would make any car in to a beast
If you can afford it turbos are the way to go
The correct answer is both. Twin charging!
you know what I love about my mustang!? how much I want a mustang 💔
Shi Senpai lol i just bought a 03 COBRA , 600 WHP
Supercharged for me :)
Turbo is the only way to fly!
Things you guys left out or got wrong ...
1. A/R has nothing to do with engine size and everything to do with spool time and engine rpm range. Bigger engines dont need a bigger A/R, they need a bigger compressor wheel.
2. You left out one huge Con on S/C's in that they put massive stresses back into the crank of the engine. A turbo does not.
You can reinforce the crank pulley. Turbo's need cool down periods for oil to cool the bearings, need oil lines that can clog and fail, more plumbing, run very hot........there's con's to everything
sugershakify he spoke on the parasitic effect superchargers have on the motor.
sugershakify superchargers dont hurt the crank.
The one and most critical point of stress is the actual main bearing. After a good 15k miles you can see massive discoloration and wear of the babbit or softer coating of the bearing usually on the upper race. Thats when oil viscosity and bearing clearances become crucial.
sugershakify a supercharger doesn't hurt the crank that's like saying the alternator and AC hurts the crank
Wer is your shop 🤔
air always have good or bad effect!
Turbos ftw
Nothing beats a superchargers whine
In a nut shell turbo chargers are harder to install and make more power than a supercharger. Superchargers are more reliable.
Both are great options try them both and pick your favorite.
I love the sound of turbo
The supercharger is it on the v6 mustang ?
Yes, ProCharger is a driving by belt what makes it one of the superchargers
